An Uneasy Feeling

Rayna's POV.“What are you waiting for?” I asked, walking back to the door as Maggie kept sweeping her gaze all over the door frame. “Aren't you going to come in?” I'd almost gotten to the sitting room when I realized that I couldn't hear any footsteps behind me. Turning around, I found her standing at the door. I don't know why she chose to remain there. Even after asking her to come in, she chose to remain outside. It wasn't as if she was a vampire waiting to be invited in. However, even if she was, then I'd invited her in already, so why was she still standing outside there glancing at the door frame like she'd seen it somewhere?“I am sorry, but I think I've made the wrong stop.” she said, looking more confused than her words sounded. “I don't think this is the place where I'm needed to work as a chef.” Meanwhile, as she was speaking, she made it so obvious that she was trying to evade my gaze. She couldn't even afford to make the slightest eye contact with me, but I knew why. I

Assigning duties

Rayna's POV.If she really thought that I would turn off the air conditioner because of her then she'd gotten it all wrong. All that drama back there? Come on, it was just a facade. I could only imagine how much her conscience would have pricked her. Well, that was if she had any. I wouldn't have gone through all that stress and then return to put off the air conditioner just to make my cook feel at home. It doesn't work that way. In the meantime, I pulled the fridge open, took out a chilled bottled water and a water glass. All that talk back there had suddenly made me thirsty. Closing the fridge, I returned to the sitting room. As I settled on the couch, I poured myself a glass of water. While I was at it, I could feel her gaze boring into my skin. Well, that was the only thing she could do; she couldn't dare meet my gaze. Nonetheless, I allowed her have the moment to herself. That is, if it would allow her breath. I filled the water glass halfway, and then dropped the half empty bo

An Incident

Rayna's POV.Turning off the shower, I reached for my body towel which was hanging on the door. After wrapping it around my body, I reached for my face towel too and then stepped out of the bathroom. However, I'd barely stepped out with the face towel pressed to a side of my face when Maggie approached me.“What would you like to have for dinner, ma'am?” she asked, standing by the side.“What says the time?” I asked, proceeding to my room as I dried my hair with the towel. “Is it 6pm yet?”“I am afraid it's a few minutes to seven, ma'am.” she said, following behind me.“Really?” I paused, turning around to face her with a surprised look. “I guess the day is shorter than I think. Anyway, I would love for you to make me pasta.” “Alright ma'am, I'll get to work immediately.” she said, turning to leave. However, she'd barely taken a step from where she stood when I called back her attention.“One more thing,” I said, indicating with a raised finger. “Do not make it soggy. Understood?” “

A Voice of Pain

Rayna's POV.Returning to the sitting room, I realized that I'd spent over thirty minutes talking to Maggie as I lifted my gaze to the wall clock by the side. I knew what that meant; my favorite TV show would have come to an end or might be about to. But, I'd to do what needed to be done. No one should be that careless. And to think that I'd barely stayed in my own house for two good hours and there was already a threat of burning it to the ground even made me more angry.Nonetheless, I ambled towards the sitting room with hopes that I would be lucky enough to see the show even if it was for a minute or two since I missed the last one due to a busy schedule. However, I also knew that the chances of getting a minute or two out of the show was as slim as the strand of hair caressing my forehead. Arriving at the sitting room, I settled on the couch and just as I thought, the show was over. On display on the TV screen were the cast and characters. “Not again.” I muttered the words under

A Grave Mistake

Rayna's POV.Tapping a foot as if counting down like a time bomb about to go off soon, I glanced at the wall clock. However, after what seemed like waiting for a lifetime, Maggie finally showed up in the dining with a food tray in her grip. “Do you realize that this is your first day on the job?” I asked, with a furrowed brow. “What took you so long?” “I am so sorry ma'am, but I had to begin the process again just like you asked me to.” she said, transferring the meal from the tray to the table. “And I do realize that it's my first day, but…” “You will do better, right?” I asked, cutting her off. “I have heard that over a million and one time already today so, it's not difficult to know that it would be your next words.” “I am so sorry ma'am.” she said, taking a step backward with head bowed and hands clasped in front of her. “Well, sorry won't make those improvements for you.” I said, bringing the meal closer to myself as I took off the lid used to cover it. “So, you'd better st

Enough Already

Rayna's POV.For a moment, I feel silent, rooted to the spot as I tried to wrap my head around Maggie's words. It felt as if my heart had literally stopped beating. Tilting my head to both sides as if trying to weigh my options, while actually trying to understand how she could have made such a mistake, I narrowed my gaze.“I don't think I understand what you just said, can you explain better please?” I asked, as a look of confusion masked my face. “What do you mean by you used the wrong ingredient?” “I should have been more careful ma'am, but I was carried away.” she said, her eyes suddenly moist with tears. “As I returned to the kitchen to do the dishes, I realized that I'd used the wrong ingredient.” “You were carried away?” I asked, letting out a laughing scoff. “Then why are you still here? If you were carried away, why are you still here or did what carry you suddenly return you?” “I am so sorry ma'am.” she said, with an apologetic look in her eyes. “Don't tell me that!” I s

Preparing for a meeting

Rayna's POV.“Are you sure you'll be able to attend the board meeting?” Sera asked, her voice laced with concern as she stood by the side watching me dress my hair into a low bun. “It doesn't take anything, I could cancel it. All you've to do is say the words.” “There will be no need for that, Sera. Not to worry, a little stomach ache won't kill me. At least, not yet.” I said, turning to face her with a smile. “Besides, this meeting is long overdue, and I don't want to keep pushing it further anymore. Also, Sebastian has been a thorn in my flesh lately; I need to put him in his place. And, I have to do it today.” “Alright. However, you'll still need to visit the hospital after you're done with the meeting, ma'am.” she said, handing me my satchel bag. “We don't have to overlook the situation. Prevention is better than cure.” “I know, dear.” I said, receiving the bag from her. “If it wasn't an important meeting, then I would have gone straight to the hospital. However, like I said, I

A Boardroom Meeting

Rayna's POV.The sound of shoes slapping against the tiled floor could be heard as I walked into the company's building and walked past the receptionist desk. The sound of ‘good morning’ greetings by employees from every corner, many of which were females on pantsuits wearing a healthy smile rippled through the silence that enveloped the environment.Rounding a corner, I took the spiral staircase which led to the boardroom as supposed to the elevator. All I wanted to do was get there on time. The elevator should do, right? Perhaps, I didn't just want to take it. Even after wasting so much time back at home, the driver wanted to waste more because only heaven knows where he suddenly disappeared to. If he hadn't returned on time, then maybe he would have lost his job, who knows? Climbing the spiral staircase, I gripped the rails as I continued to ascend with my head held up high. “We could have just taken the elevator ma'am.” Sera said, looking more exhausted than she sounded. “It woul

Taking the next step

Rayna's POV.I guess I hit a nerve when I said those words because the silence afterward was almost deafening. I could feel it; it had been long coming. However, deciding not to say a thing about it didn't mean that I didn't know what was going on, or what he was up to. I just wanted to give him a little more time to clean up his mess before I would act. However, he must have taken me for a fool because of my silence. Not just him, but every other person who's worked with him or better still, who helped him in some way would feel the heat. “What are you trying to say?” he asked, his formerly calm face was disturbed by a hard tightening of his jaw. “Why would you think that I channelled the money to a different purpose.”“I don't know, you tell me.” I said, looking him straight in the eyes. “Besides, it was an innocent question. All you have to do is give me an answer. Did you do so or not?” After staring at me with a cold gaze for a while, he suddenly let out a bark of laughter as i

A Long Time Dream

Rayna's POV.“Ma'am, you called for me.” Laura said, standing before me with both hands clasped in front to her. “I came down here immediately I got your message.” “Good. You seem so promising.” I said, lowering the screen of my laptop and lifting my gaze to her with a smile on my lips as I leaned back on my chair. “You may sit, please.” I gestured with a hand towards the chair on the other side of the desk.“So, how can I be of help to you ma'am?” she asked, with an excited catch in her voice. “I will do my everything in my power to give you the best results.” Well, I have also heard that a good number of times but in the end, many of those who said so fell short of expectations. However, like I said earlier, she appeared rather promising and would do a good job for me. “I just need your help with something.” I said, leaning forward as I clasped my hands together on the desk. “Anything ma'am, just tell me.” she said, her eyes brightened at the words. “I will get it done as soon
