Rayna's POV.
For a moment, I feel silent, rooted to the spot as I tried to wrap my head around Maggie's words. It felt as if my heart had literally stopped beating. Tilting my head to both sides as if trying to weigh my options, while actually trying to understand how she could have made such a mistake, I narrowed my gaze.
“I don't think I understand what you just said, can you explain better please?” I asked, as a look of confusion masked my face. “What do you mean by you used the wrong ingredient?”
“I should have been more careful ma'am, but I was carried away.” she said, her eyes suddenly moist with tears. “As I returned to the kitchen to do the dishes, I realized that I'd used the wrong ingredient.”
“You were carried away?” I asked, letting out a laughing scoff. “Then why are you still here? If you were carried away, why are you still here or did what carry you suddenly return you?”
“I am so sorry ma'am.” she said, with an apologetic look in her eyes.
“Don't tell me that!” I snapped, as a flash of temper lighted my eyes. “Firstly, you tried to burn down my house, and now you've mixed whatever ingredient you're not supposed to use. Is this your first time? Or are you purposely doing all these?”
“No, ma'am. It isn't my first time.” she said, shaking her head. “I didn't know how it happened.”
“Of course, you wouldn't!” I shot back, my eyes glittering with anger. “Do you have a child you're taking care of? Or better still, are you married yet because it's only if you're married that you can have a child or else it's the other way round.”
“No, ma'am, I am not married yet.” she said, her voice was so husky as to be almost inaudible. “And I do not have a child.”
“So, what in the world were you thinking about for goodness’ sake!” I yelled, gripping the sides of my head as I tried to calm myself. “How much more would you ruin until you realize that you're making mistakes, huh? Tell me! What am I supposed to do now? Who even has any idea what ingredient you added into my meal which you shouldn't have? What am I supposed to do with you right now?”
“I have made a mistake, ma'am, please forgive me.”
“No, you've made two mistakes.” I said, indicating with two fingers to her face. “And those mistakes have come in the space of an hour. I mean, who does that? Who works without their mind in what their doing?”
“I am…”
“Don't you dare say that word again.” I said, my voice matching the hardness in my gaze as I cut her off. “You have been sorry since you got here. Or are you planning on changing your name to sorry, huh? Is that what you're planning to do? Or aren't you even tired of saying the words? I can't even count how many times I've heard that word from you this evening and yet you still want to keep saying it?”
“It is because I don't know what else to say ma'am.” she said, shaking her head.
“Good.” I yelled, my voice almost rising to the heights of the roof. “If you don't have any idea whatsoever of what to say then kindly keep quiet. I do not want to hear that you're sorry anymore. The next time you say that word close to me then consider yourself jobless.”
“I am—”
The rest of the words died in her throat as she recalled my words quickly.
“Oh, you still want to say the words again, right?” I asked, letting out a laughing scoff. “Did you serve Onyx too?”
“No ma'am.” she said, hiding her hands behind her. “She said she had something to eat before coming down here so, she would rather eat tomorrow.”
“I guess she's so lucky then.” I said, with a shrug of my shoulder. “And you? Have you eaten the meal?”
“Not yet ma'am.” she said, shaking her head while evading my gaze. “I was just about to serve myself when I realized that I'd made a terrible mistake.”
“So, I guess this affects just me, right?” I asked, letting out a bark of laughter as I turned around to gather my thoughts. “What was I expecting? I knew that you wouldn't have gotten a taste from it yet. However, I need you to show me the ingredient you used instead. Go on. Let's go to the kitchen.”
She reluctantly turned around and proceeded to the kitchen while I followed behind her. I couldn't say exactly if she knew what she was doing here. Or perhaps, she'd figured out who I was, and she was trying to tell me through all these mistakes that she knew who I was. Or what better way to explain trying to burn down my house and mistaking the ingredients used for cooking with the wrong one?
In the meantime, as we arrived in the kitchen, she began to pace back and forth with a rather confused look on her face.
“Is there something wrong?” I asked, with a tinge of curiosity in my voice as I leaned against the kitchen countertop with both hands folded across my chest. “What are you looking for?”
“It was right there.” she said, looking more confused than her words as she pointed to a spot close to the sink. “I am sure of it.”
“You are sure of what?” I asked, turning to see where she'd pointed to. “I can't find anything here which means that it wasn't there to begin with. Is there something wrong other than the fact that you don't put your mind to what you're doing? Are you forgetful too?”
“No, ma'am. I'm definitely sure that I kept it there before leaving the kitchen.” she said, dropping her gaze to floor. “Oh, there it is.”
She lowered her knees in a squat as she picked it up. From the sound it made when she picked it, I knew it was something sealed in a wrapper.
“Here it is ma'am.” she said, extending a hand towards me with the ingredient in her grip.
“Isn't this—”
Rayna's POV.“Are you sure you'll be able to attend the board meeting?” Sera asked, her voice laced with concern as she stood by the side watching me dress my hair into a low bun. “It doesn't take anything, I could cancel it. All you've to do is say the words.” “There will be no need for that, Sera. Not to worry, a little stomach ache won't kill me. At least, not yet.” I said, turning to face her with a smile. “Besides, this meeting is long overdue, and I don't want to keep pushing it further anymore. Also, Sebastian has been a thorn in my flesh lately; I need to put him in his place. And, I have to do it today.” “Alright. However, you'll still need to visit the hospital after you're done with the meeting, ma'am.” she said, handing me my satchel bag. “We don't have to overlook the situation. Prevention is better than cure.” “I know, dear.” I said, receiving the bag from her. “If it wasn't an important meeting, then I would have gone straight to the hospital. However, like I said, I

Even after wasting so much time back at home, the driver wanted to waste more because only heaven knows where he suddenly disappeared to. If he hadn't returned on time, then maybe he would have lost his job, who knows? However, deciding not to say a thing about it didn't mean that I didn't know what was going on, or what he was up to. I just wanted to give him a little more time to clean up his mess before I would act. However, he must have taken me for a fool because of my silence. Not just him, but every other person who's worked with him or better still, who helped him in some way would feel the heat. “What are you trying to say?” he asked, his formerly calm face was disturbed by a hard tightening of his jaw. “Why would you think that I channelled the money to a different purpose.”“I don't know, you tell me.” I said, looking him straight in the eyes. “Besides, it was an innocent question. All you have to do is give me an answer. Did you do so or not?” After staring at me with a cold gaze for a while, he suddenly let out a bark of laughter as i
Chapter one Rayna"You're not going to school today until you're done cleaning!" My mother roared at me. I turned, startled, "I'm done with my chores, ma." Her only response was a resounding slap that has my neck snapping to the side. I cup my flaming cheeks. "You useless girl," she snarled, advancing at me, "How dare you talk back to me? It seems you're beginning to get too audacious." I staggered away from the wrath blazing in her eyes. "What's going on up there, darling?" Uncle Timothy's voice barked from below. I glanced over my shoulder to see my silver haired uncle standing in the middle the living room and glaring up at me. "She refused to do the cleaning," mother smirked at me. "Th-that's not true," I rushed to say, "I've cleaned the house already." "What about the garage at the back? Did you clean it?" She raised one brow at me. I gaped at her. Since when did cleaning the garage become one of my duties too? As if it wasn't enough that I had to clean this endless m
Chapter twoRayna"what's that pathetic orphan doing here?" I heard someone sneer. "Ewww, what is she wearing?" "They shouldn't keep on letting her in here." "Can't she make an effort to wash her uniform?" "Wash? Ugh, she needs to throw those rags away and buy new ones. She looks like something they dug up from the trash. Yuck." Keeping my head down, I ignored all their snide words as I walked past the rows of desks and settled in my lone desk at the very back of the class. " You're late!" Mr. Ivory barked at me, "If this continues to repeat itself, you'll have to face detention." My heart began to pound in my chest. Detention was the worst thing they could do to me because the one time I hadn't come home on time, my mother had locked me in my room with no food or water for three days. "I'm sorry, sir. It won't happen again." "I've heard that before," he rolled his eyes and turned back to the board, "Now, on the topic of differentiation_" I tried my best to listen but not on
Chapter three Rayna"Why are you dressed like a slut!" My fiance's cold voice lashed against my skin like a whip as I climbed into the back of his Cadillac at the end of the school day."Good afternoon, sir," I kept my eyes lowered and my tone mild. Jared Winehall, my forty six year old fiance was a man that was prone to extreme anger. He lashed out at the drop of a hat and I had been on the receiving end of the back of his hand countlessly. I had also tasted the bite of his whip against my back severally. I had had to learn fast to be as demure as possible if I didn't want a repeat experience. "I asked you a question!" He barked, eyes fixed on the hint of exposed thighs. I had been wearing the same uniform for about five years now and it had gotten shorter as I had aged. It was barely two inches above my knee now though. "I'm sorry, sir," I replied meekly, "I have outgrown the uniform." "I don't believe you, you lying whore," his hand lashed out and clamped around my neck. I l
Chapter four Rayna"Stop at the one of the stores and get her a scarf and a necklace," My fiance spoke into the intercom fixed into the car. Then he turned dark eyes at me, "For your neck," he explains, "We both know it was an accident, but I would hate for people to think a man like me is an abuser."I nodded, "Of course." The car pulled to a stop across a street which boasted designer stores and I heard the passenger door open. Jared's assistant Lilian stepped out of the car, wearing her usual pinched face expression as she crossed over to the Hermes store. I hated the assistant almost as much as I hated my fiance. She acted like her boss was the best thing to have ever happened to the human population and treated me like garbage. Fifteen minutes later, she was back with a box tucked under her arm. She opened the door and passed Jared the box before walking to the passenger side of the car. The fat man passed me the box, "Open it." With a feigned shy smile, I pulled open the
Chapter five Rayna/AyaSix years later "Welcome to New York," the automated voice announced from the airport speakers. I took one deep breath and smiled. Welcome indeed. Once upon a time this city had destroyed me, but now, I was going to use this city to destroy others. My phone began to buzz and I picked the call, pressing the device to my ear, "Yes?" "Ma'am," the soft voice of my assistant began, "Welcome to New York. I've sent the driver to pick you and he should be in a black Mercedes right outside. I couldn't join him because there was a problem with your new house and I had to be on site to handle it." "It's fine, Sera," I told her, "I don't need you shadowing me twenty four hours of the day. I'll see you when I get there." With that I hung up and made my way out of the airport building, my five inch Manolo Blahnik heels clicking against the tiled floor. Several heads turned as I walked by and I smiled, amused. My presence was always sure to cause a stir. With my waist

Rayna's POV.Tapping a foot as if counting down like a time bomb about to go off soon, I glanced at the wall clock. However, after what seemed like waiting for a lifetime, Maggie finally showed up in the dining with a food tray in her grip. “Do you realize that this is your first day on the job?” I asked, with a furrowed brow. “What took you so long?” “I am so sorry ma'am, but I had to begin the process again just like you asked me to.” she said, transferring the meal from the tray to the table. “And I do realize that it's my first day, but…” “You will do better, right?” I asked, cutting her off. “I have heard that over a million and one time already today so, it's not difficult to know that it would be your next words.” “I am so sorry ma'am.” she said, taking a step backward with head bowed and hands clasped in front of her. “Well, sorry won't make those improvements for you.” I said, bringing the meal closer to myself as I took off the lid used to cover it. “So, you'd better st
Rayna's POV.Returning to the sitting room, I realized that I'd spent over thirty minutes talking to Maggie as I lifted my gaze to the wall clock by the side. I knew what that meant; my favorite TV show would have come to an end or might be about to. But, I'd to do what needed to be done. No one should be that careless. And to think that I'd barely stayed in my own house for two good hours and there was already a threat of burning it to the ground even made me more angry.Nonetheless, I ambled towards the sitting room with hopes that I would be lucky enough to see the show even if it was for a minute or two since I missed the last one due to a busy schedule. However, I also knew that the chances of getting a minute or two out of the show was as slim as the strand of hair caressing my forehead. Arriving at the sitting room, I settled on the couch and just as I thought, the show was over. On display on the TV screen were the cast and characters. “Not again.” I muttered the words under
Rayna's POV.Turning off the shower, I reached for my body towel which was hanging on the door. After wrapping it around my body, I reached for my face towel too and then stepped out of the bathroom. However, I'd barely stepped out with the face towel pressed to a side of my face when Maggie approached me.“What would you like to have for dinner, ma'am?” she asked, standing by the side.“What says the time?” I asked, proceeding to my room as I dried my hair with the towel. “Is it 6pm yet?”“I am afraid it's a few minutes to seven, ma'am.” she said, following behind me.“Really?” I paused, turning around to face her with a surprised look. “I guess the day is shorter than I think. Anyway, I would love for you to make me pasta.” “Alright ma'am, I'll get to work immediately.” she said, turning to leave. However, she'd barely taken a step from where she stood when I called back her attention.“One more thing,” I said, indicating with a raised finger. “Do not make it soggy. Understood?” “
Rayna's POV.If she really thought that I would turn off the air conditioner because of her then she'd gotten it all wrong. All that drama back there? Come on, it was just a facade. I could only imagine how much her conscience would have pricked her. Well, that was if she had any. I wouldn't have gone through all that stress and then return to put off the air conditioner just to make my cook feel at home. It doesn't work that way. In the meantime, I pulled the fridge open, took out a chilled bottled water and a water glass. All that talk back there had suddenly made me thirsty. Closing the fridge, I returned to the sitting room. As I settled on the couch, I poured myself a glass of water. While I was at it, I could feel her gaze boring into my skin. Well, that was the only thing she could do; she couldn't dare meet my gaze. Nonetheless, I allowed her have the moment to herself. That is, if it would allow her breath. I filled the water glass halfway, and then dropped the half empty bo
Rayna's POV.“What are you waiting for?” I asked, walking back to the door as Maggie kept sweeping her gaze all over the door frame. “Aren't you going to come in?” I'd almost gotten to the sitting room when I realized that I couldn't hear any footsteps behind me. Turning around, I found her standing at the door. I don't know why she chose to remain there. Even after asking her to come in, she chose to remain outside. It wasn't as if she was a vampire waiting to be invited in. However, even if she was, then I'd invited her in already, so why was she still standing outside there glancing at the door frame like she'd seen it somewhere?“I am sorry, but I think I've made the wrong stop.” she said, looking more confused than her words sounded. “I don't think this is the place where I'm needed to work as a chef.” Meanwhile, as she was speaking, she made it so obvious that she was trying to evade my gaze. She couldn't even afford to make the slightest eye contact with me, but I knew why. I
