Rayna's POV.

Tapping a foot as if counting down like a time bomb about to go off soon, I glanced at the wall clock. However, after what seemed like waiting for a lifetime, Maggie finally showed up in the dining with a food tray in her grip.

“Do you realize that this is your first day on the job?” I asked, with a furrowed brow. “What took you so long?”

“I am so sorry ma'am, but I had to begin the process again just like you asked me to.” she said, transferring the meal from the tray to the table. “And I do realize that it's my first day, but…”

“You will do better, right?” I asked, cutting her off. “I have heard that over a million and one time already today so, it's not difficult to know that it would be your next words.”

“I am so sorry ma'am.” she said, taking a step backward with head bowed and hands clasped in front of her.

“Well, sorry won't make those improvements for you.” I said, bringing the meal closer to myself as I took off the lid used to cover it. “So, you'd better start taking correction or else, your pay would slip off your grip this month and I bet you don't want that.”

As I picked up the fork from the tray, I noticed that she was still standing there as if expecting me to say something.

“Is there something wrong?” I asked, with an edge to my voice as I turned to face her with a furrowed brow. “Why are you standing there? Or do you want to join me?”

“No, ma'am.” she said, shaking her head. “I just…”

“You can leave.” I said, cutting her off. “There is no point waiting for a five-star review which you won't get. At least, not from me.”

I figured she wanted me to taste the food, while she on the other hand studied my reaction to see if it was good. But, hello? This isn't some cooking competition and I ain't no judge. So, I'd rather eat my meal the way I want to. Or perhaps, she didn't have enough confidence in what she'd prepared. In the meantime, she withdrew herself from the dining table and before long, she was out of sight.

Returning my attention to the meal in front of me, I shoved my fork and swirled it around then I took a bite. After chewing for a few seconds, I noticed that it was actually good. However, knowing what lies ahead of me the following day, I finished up quickly.

“Maggie.” I called, pushing the empty plate to the side as I wiped the corners of my mouth with a napkin.

Immediately, she appeared before me with hands clasped in front of her.

“You can take this away.” I said, pushing the plate towards her with a hand while I gripped the water glass with another. “Make sure you wash it immediately.”

“Yes, ma'am.” she said, clearing the table. “I will do so immediately.”

“You forgot this,” I said, pointing a finger to the water glass on the table as she turned to leave. “Or were you expecting that I would bring it to you instead.”

“Of course not ma'am, I wouldn't dare think like that.” she said, including the water glass on the tray. “I will be more careful next time.”

After saying those words, she hurried away to resume her duties while on the other hand, I let out a heavy sigh. I'd barely dropped my head to think a little when I felt someone tap me.

“Ma'am?” Onyx called, trying to bring me back awake.

She must have thought that I was asleep when actually, I was reflecting on a few things. However, after she called out to me the first time, I blinked my eyes open.

“Is there something wrong?” I asked, lifting my head as I turned to face her. “What do you want?”

“Nothing ma'am.” she said, shaking her head. “I came to tell you that I'm done preparing your bed. I thought you must have fallen asleep here.”

“Thank you so much, but I wasn't asleep.” I said, with a smile on my lips. “I just wanted to get a moment alone. That was all.”

“Alright ma'am, still your bed has been prepared. So, you can go to sleep whenever you want.” she said, returning the smile. “Also, I would retire to bed soon because I'm done with my work.”

“Of course, you should.” I said, with a subtle nod of my head. “You have worked so hard today and I'm happy. So, go get some rest.”

“Thank you ma'am.” she said, excusing herself.

As she did, I scraped a hand over my face and then righted myself from the chair. All I had in mind was to get to my room and sleep. In the meantime, I walked out of the dining and into the sitting room. However, as I proceeded to my room, I found Maggie sitting on the couch with a long face. Actually, I should have confronted her for sitting on the couch without my permission to begin with but as I noticed the look on her face, I knew that something was wrong.

“Maggie?” I called, wanting to be sure it was her. “What are you doing here all alone? And what's with the long face?”

“It is nothing ma'am.” she said, swiping a hand at her face as she tried to hide her tears. “I am fine ma'am.”

“Is that tears I'm seeing or does your eyes suddenly let out water at will?” I asked, shooting suspicious glances at her. “How can you say it's nothing when you're crying? Does it make any sense to you? Tell me, what happened?”

“I made a mistake ma'am.” she said, the words seemed to drag themselves from her lips as she rubbed and twisted her hands.

“What mistake did you make?” I asked, with a tinge of curiosity in my voice. “It shouldn't be that bad for you to sit here alone crying, or is it?”

“It is ma'am.” she said, her voice breaking as she blinked back tears.

“How bad?”

“I just realized now that I put in an ingredient which I wasn't supposed to in your meal.”

“Pardon?”

All you've to do is say the words.” “There will be no need for that, Sera. Not to worry, a little stomach ache won't kill me. At least, not yet.” I said, turning to face her with a smile. “Besides, this meeting is long overdue, and I don't want to keep pushing it further anymore. Chapter one Rayna"You're not going to school today until you're done cleaning!" My mother roared at me. I turned, startled, "I'm done with my chores, ma." Her only response was a resounding slap that has my neck snapping to the side. I cup my flaming cheeks. "You useless girl," she snarled, advancing at me, "How dare you talk back to me? It seems you're beginning to get too audacious." I staggered away from the wrath blazing in her eyes. "What's going on up there, darling?" Uncle Timothy's voice barked from below. I glanced over my shoulder to see my silver haired uncle standing in the middle the living room and glaring up at me. "She refused to do the cleaning," mother smirked at me. "Th-that's not true," I rushed to say, "I've cleaned the house already." "What about the garage at the back? Did you clean it?" She raised one brow at me. I gaped at her. Since when did cleaning the garage become one of my duties too? As if it wasn't enough that I had to clean this endless m

"Can't she make an effort to wash her uniform?" "Wash? Ugh, she needs to throw those rags away and buy new ones. She looks like something they dug up from the trash. Yuck." Keeping my head down, I ignored all their snide words as I walked past the rows of desks and settled in my lone desk at the very back of the class. " You're late!" Mr. Ivory barked at me, "If this continues to repeat itself, you'll have to face detention." My heart began to pound in my chest. Detention was the worst thing they could do to me because the one time I hadn't come home on time, my mother had locked me in my room with no food or water for three days. "I'm sorry, sir. It won't happen again." "I've heard that before," he rolled his eyes and turned back to the board, "Now, on the topic of differentiation_" I tried my best to listen but not on

Chapter three Rayna"Why are you dressed like a slut!" My fiance's cold voice lashed against my skin like a whip as I climbed into the back of his Cadillac at the end of the school day."Good afternoon, sir," I kept my eyes lowered and my tone mild. Jared Winehall, my forty six year old fiance was a man that was prone to extreme anger. He lashed out at the drop of a hat and I had been on the receiving end of the back of his hand countlessly. I had also tasted the bite of his whip against my back severally. I had had to learn fast to be as demure as possible if I didn't want a repeat experience. "I asked you a question!" He barked, eyes fixed on the hint of exposed thighs. I had been wearing the same uniform for about five years now and it had gotten shorter as I had aged. It was barely two inches above my knee now though. "I'm sorry, sir," I replied meekly, "I have outgrown the uniform." "I don't believe you, you lying whore," his hand lashed out and clamped around my neck. I l

Then he turned dark eyes at me, "For your neck," he explains, "We both know it was an accident, but I would hate for people to think a man like me is an abuser."I nodded, "Of course." The car pulled to a stop across a street which boasted designer stores and I heard the passenger door open. Jared's assistant Lilian stepped out of the car, wearing her usual pinched face expression as she crossed over to the Hermes store. I hated the assistant almost as much as I hated my fiance. She acted like her boss was the best thing to have ever happened to the human population and treated me like garbage. Fifteen minutes later, she was back with a box tucked under her arm. She opened the door and passed Jared the box before walking to the passenger side of the car. The fat man passed me the box, "Open it." With a feigned shy smile, I pulled open the

  • BOUND BY VENGEANCE    A Voice of Pain

Rayna's POV.Returning to the sitting room, I realized that I'd spent over thirty minutes talking to Maggie as I lifted my gaze to the wall clock by the side. I knew what that meant; my favorite TV show would have come to an end or might be about to. But, I'd to do what needed to be done. No one should be that careless. And to think that I'd barely stayed in my own house for two good hours and there was already a threat of burning it to the ground even made me more angry.Nonetheless, I ambled towards the sitting room with hopes that I would be lucky enough to see the show even if it was for a minute or two since I missed the last one due to a busy schedule. However, I also knew that the chances of getting a minute or two out of the show was as slim as the strand of hair caressing my forehead. Arriving at the sitting room, I settled on the couch and just as I thought, the show was over. On display on the TV screen were the cast and characters. “Not again.” I muttered the words under

However, I'd barely stepped out with the face towel pressed to a side of my face when Maggie approached me.“What would you like to have for dinner, ma'am?” she asked, standing by the side.“What says the time?” I asked, proceeding to my room as I dried my hair with the towel. “Is it 6pm yet?”“I am afraid it's a few minutes to seven, ma'am.” she said, following behind me.“Really?” I paused, turning around to face her with a surprised look. “I guess the day is shorter than I think. Anyway, I would love for you to make me pasta.” “Alright ma'am, I'll get to work immediately.” she said, turning to leave. However, she'd barely taken a step from where she stood when I called back her attention.“One more thing,” I said, indicating with a raised finger. “Do not make it soggy. Rayna's POV.If she really thought that I would turn off the air conditioner because of her then she'd gotten it all wrong. All that drama back there? Come on, it was just a facade. I could only imagine how much her conscience would have pricked her. Well, that was if she had any. I wouldn't have gone through all that stress and then return to put off the air conditioner just to make my cook feel at home. It doesn't work that way. In the meantime, I pulled the fridge open, took out a chilled bottled water and a water glass. All that talk back there had suddenly made me thirsty. Closing the fridge, I returned to the sitting room. As I settled on the couch, I poured myself a glass of water. While I was at it, I could feel her gaze boring into my skin. Well, that was the only thing she could do; she couldn't dare meet my gaze. Nonetheless, I allowed her have the moment to herself. That is, if it would allow her breath. Turning around, I found her standing at the door. I don't know why she chose to remain there. Even after asking her to come in, she chose to remain outside. It wasn't as if she was a vampire waiting to be invited in. However, even if she was, then I'd invited her in already, so why was she still standing outside there glancing at the door frame like she'd seen it somewhere?“I am sorry, but I think I've made the wrong stop.” she said, looking more confused than her words sounded. “I don't think this is the place where I'm needed to work as a chef.” Meanwhile, as she was speaking, she made it so obvious that she was trying to evade my gaze. She couldn't even afford to make the slightest eye contact with me, but I knew why. I
