Rayna's POV.
I'd barely dropped my gaze to the document which I'd to review after Laura exited my office when I heard a knock on the door. Earlier, I figured that she wanted to say something but then, it seemed like she forgot and perhaps, now she'd remember hence her return to my office. Although, there were still loads of documents for me to review but then, I knew that I'd to answer her before going on with any other thing.
“You may come in, please.” I said, pushing the document to the side as I lifted my gaze to the door, awaiting her presence.
However, as the doorknob was turned open from the other side and then pushed open, a rather familiar figure revealed himself as he took some steps into my office. As my gaze fell on him, I almost jumped out of my skin.
“Hello,” he mouthed, lifting a hand and shaking his fingers as a cynical smile pushed his lips to the side. “Missed me?”
Staring at him, I blinked my eyes rapidly in confusion. How was it possible that he was standing right on front of me now? In the meantime, I mirrored his movements as he ventured further into my office, coming my way. However, as he did, he swept his eyes all over the place nodding his head as if satisfied with what he was seeing.
“Phoenix Inc, right?” he asked, with a raised brow. “I am so proud of you. I mean, look at what you've achieved in such a short time.”
“What are you doing here Morgan?” I asked, my formerly calm face was disturbed by a hard tightening of my jaw. “And how did you find this place?”
“Easy, alright?” he asked, lifting both arms in surrender as if trying to say he meant no harm. “Besides, won't you offer me a seat? My legs hurt from the journey I made down here.”
“And why should I offer you a seat?” I asked, with an edge to my voice as I raised a brow. “Forget it. I won't allow you sit on that chair. Now, if you don't have anything reasonable to say then please, leave before I ask the security to throw you out.”
“Well, I guess you've got that much power now.” he said, with a shrug of his shoulder. “Aren't you happy to see me again after two years? No hello? Or even a hug even if you'll have to fake it, huh?”
“What are you doing here Morgan?” I asked, narrowing my gaze at the words. “You should speak up now else you'll return to the very place you just came out from.”
“And where would that be? Oh, it seems I recall now.” he said, with a hint of sarcasm edging his lips. “The prison right? Well, I am not going back there. Believe it or not I've come to stay.”
“To do what exactly?” I asked, with a tinge of curiosity in my voice. “It is rather obvious that you don't want to put your hands to good use. So, it's either you tell me what you're doing here, or put your legs to good use by walking out of my office this minute.”
“Well, it must have been so good to send me there, right?” he asked, his brows merging into a savage line.
Well, I'd to do what had to be done. Aside, my uncle and Jared of course, he was one of those reasons why I disliked men. If I hadn't sent him to the prison then who knows what he would have done? At least that two year in the cell meant that he didn't go around trying to harass women just like he did to me. However, should I realized that the cell over there didn't teach him some manners, then I wouldn't mind enrolling him in another around here just until he learns to behave well enough.
“I had to do what needed to be done.” I said, with ice in my voice. “But it seems that you've not learned anything yet.”
“You ruined my life!” he thundered, slamming a hand on my desk. “Is that what you had to do?”
“Well, you tried to ruin mine first, or have you forgotten so soon?” I asked, with a raised brow as if trying to help him recollect the events of that cold night. “You see, men like you deserve what they get for trying to take advantage of women like us.”
“That wasn't me.” he said, speaking through his teeth with forced restraint as he shook his head while forming his hands into a fist. “I was stoned that night. I wasn't aware of what I was doing.”
“Well, perhaps you should drink less these days. Maybe you'll be in full control of your actions better.” I said, with a shrug of my shoulder. “Unless you want history to repeat itself again. Trust me, it won't be two years this time. It'll be double.”
“Well, I figured that you would say something like this.” he said, pointing a finger at me as he bent over, leaning his body weight on the chair on the opposite side of my desk. “However, there will be no need for that. You see, I learned a lot in my stay over there and so, I thought that it wouldn't be nice if I don't pass on the knowledge that I've gained. I mean, that would defeat the entire purpose of learning in the first place, or don't you think?”
As the words fell upon my ears, my skin crawled but then, I kept a straight face.
“What do you mean by that?” I asked, narrowing my gaze at the words. “Do you realize that you're in my office right now? I could throw you out at will.”
“But you haven't done so.” he said, shaking his head as if trying to pass a message across to me. “However, you don't have to worry so much. I failed to treat you well the last time but now, I will do right by you.”
“Well, be my guest. You're welcomed to try.” I said, as smile pushed my lips to the side. “However, I must say that you should also watch your steps to avoid falling into my trap. Because once you do, you'll be going back to where you came from.”
“And how sure are you about that?”
Chapter one Rayna"You're not going to school today until you're done cleaning!" My mother roared at me. I turned, startled, "I'm done with my chores, ma." Her only response was a resounding slap that has my neck snapping to the side. I cup my flaming cheeks. "You useless girl," she snarled, advancing at me, "How dare you talk back to me? It seems you're beginning to get too audacious." I staggered away from the wrath blazing in her eyes. "What's going on up there, darling?" Uncle Timothy's voice barked from below. I glanced over my shoulder to see my silver haired uncle standing in the middle the living room and glaring up at me. "She refused to do the cleaning," mother smirked at me. "Th-that's not true," I rushed to say, "I've cleaned the house already." "What about the garage at the back? Did you clean it?" She raised one brow at me. I gaped at her. Since when did cleaning the garage become one of my duties too? As if it wasn't enough that I had to clean this endless m
Chapter twoRayna"what's that pathetic orphan doing here?" I heard someone sneer. "Ewww, what is she wearing?" "They shouldn't keep on letting her in here." "Can't she make an effort to wash her uniform?" "Wash? Ugh, she needs to throw those rags away and buy new ones. She looks like something they dug up from the trash. Yuck." Keeping my head down, I ignored all their snide words as I walked past the rows of desks and settled in my lone desk at the very back of the class. " You're late!" Mr. Ivory barked at me, "If this continues to repeat itself, you'll have to face detention." My heart began to pound in my chest. Detention was the worst thing they could do to me because the one time I hadn't come home on time, my mother had locked me in my room with no food or water for three days. "I'm sorry, sir. It won't happen again." "I've heard that before," he rolled his eyes and turned back to the board, "Now, on the topic of differentiation_" I tried my best to listen but not on
Chapter three Rayna"Why are you dressed like a slut!" My fiance's cold voice lashed against my skin like a whip as I climbed into the back of his Cadillac at the end of the school day."Good afternoon, sir," I kept my eyes lowered and my tone mild. Jared Winehall, my forty six year old fiance was a man that was prone to extreme anger. He lashed out at the drop of a hat and I had been on the receiving end of the back of his hand countlessly. I had also tasted the bite of his whip against my back severally. I had had to learn fast to be as demure as possible if I didn't want a repeat experience. "I asked you a question!" He barked, eyes fixed on the hint of exposed thighs. I had been wearing the same uniform for about five years now and it had gotten shorter as I had aged. It was barely two inches above my knee now though. "I'm sorry, sir," I replied meekly, "I have outgrown the uniform." "I don't believe you, you lying whore," his hand lashed out and clamped around my neck. I l
Chapter four Rayna"Stop at the one of the stores and get her a scarf and a necklace," My fiance spoke into the intercom fixed into the car. Then he turned dark eyes at me, "For your neck," he explains, "We both know it was an accident, but I would hate for people to think a man like me is an abuser."I nodded, "Of course." The car pulled to a stop across a street which boasted designer stores and I heard the passenger door open. Jared's assistant Lilian stepped out of the car, wearing her usual pinched face expression as she crossed over to the Hermes store. I hated the assistant almost as much as I hated my fiance. She acted like her boss was the best thing to have ever happened to the human population and treated me like garbage. Fifteen minutes later, she was back with a box tucked under her arm. She opened the door and passed Jared the box before walking to the passenger side of the car. The fat man passed me the box, "Open it." With a feigned shy smile, I pulled open the
Chapter five Rayna/AyaSix years later "Welcome to New York," the automated voice announced from the airport speakers. I took one deep breath and smiled. Welcome indeed. Once upon a time this city had destroyed me, but now, I was going to use this city to destroy others. My phone began to buzz and I picked the call, pressing the device to my ear, "Yes?" "Ma'am," the soft voice of my assistant began, "Welcome to New York. I've sent the driver to pick you and he should be in a black Mercedes right outside. I couldn't join him because there was a problem with your new house and I had to be on site to handle it." "It's fine, Sera," I told her, "I don't need you shadowing me twenty four hours of the day. I'll see you when I get there." With that I hung up and made my way out of the airport building, my five inch Manolo Blahnik heels clicking against the tiled floor. Several heads turned as I walked by and I smiled, amused. My presence was always sure to cause a stir. With my waist
Rayna's POV.For a moment longer, there was an awkward silence in the room which made my skin crawl with sparks of dread. I knew fate was full of surprises, but I never expected this plot twist. If anything, I'd figured out a million and one way to ruin his father. To help you understand better, I'd even rehearsed a few lines to make sure that the words flow effortlessly from my lips. However, seeing his son as supposed to him seems to break down all my defenses. Nonetheless, the children can always pay for the crimes of their father and even for generations to come. So, if he actually thought that sending his son down here would slow down his punishment, then I would allow him to be my guest. “Ahem,” he cleared his throat, pressing a fist to his lips. “We should get on with the meeting already. There's a lot to talk about and time is of the essence.”“Of course, it is.” I said, forcing a smile through my lips. “I want to believe that my assistant has briefed you on what we want.”
Rayna's POV.Exiting the building, to be precise, after taking four steps away from the revolving full glass door, I paused, turned around and stared at the building one last time. The only thought in mind being how to crush to dust every part of it just like I did Zane's pride a while ago. But, that wasn't the only reason why I paused, I just had a feeling that he was watching me through the window of his office. And guess what? I was wrong. In the meantime, I turned back to face front, taking a few more steps as I advanced towards my car. I pulled the door open and settled in the back seat.“We should be on our way already.” I said, dipping a hand into my satchel bag as I reached for my cellphone. “Alright ma'am.” — the driver said, glancing at me through the rearview mirror.Without further ado, he inserted the keys into the ignition, and with a slight turn, the engine came alive with a soft purr. Tilting the steering to the side, we hit the road Immediately. Meanwhile, while he
Rayna's POV.I wouldn't say I'm the most organized or intentional, but I know when to do the right things at the right time. If anything, the driver should have checked the gas level before deciding to take the car out for a ride. Now, it's me who's has to suffer for his ignorance. Pardon my words, but I just can't help it. Thinking that I was trying to beat time to its game and instead, I'm being delayed by the fact that there isn't enough gas in the car: a situation which could have been avoided in the first place. In the meantime, without anything to do, but just to keep myself company, I picked up the magazine again and glanced through, while my driver filled up the car with gas. Before long, he was done and immediately, he settled on his seat, fixed his seatbelt and then reawakened the engine of the car.“I am so sorry ma'am for the delay.” he said, glancing at me through the rearview mirror with an apologetic look in his eyes. “I should have checked the gas level before bringi

Rayna's POV.“Ma'am, you called for me.” Laura said, standing before me with both hands clasped in front to her. “I came down here immediately I got your message.” “Good. You seem so promising.” I said, lowering the screen of my laptop and lifting my gaze to her with a smile on my lips as I leaned back on my chair. “You may sit, please.” I gestured with a hand towards the chair on the other side of the desk.“So, how can I be of help to you ma'am?” she asked, with an excited catch in her voice. “I will do my everything in my power to give you the best results.” Well, I have also heard that a good number of times but in the end, many of those who said so fell short of expectations. However, like I said earlier, she appeared rather promising and would do a good job for me. “I just need your help with something.” I said, leaning forward as I clasped my hands together on the desk. “Anything ma'am, just tell me.” she said, her eyes brightened at the words. “I will get it done as soon
Rayna's POV.I guess I hit a nerve when I said those words because the silence afterward was almost deafening. I could feel it; it had been long coming. However, deciding not to say a thing about it didn't mean that I didn't know what was going on, or what he was up to. I just wanted to give him a little more time to clean up his mess before I would act. However, he must have taken me for a fool because of my silence. Not just him, but every other person who's worked with him or better still, who helped him in some way would feel the heat. “What are you trying to say?” he asked, his formerly calm face was disturbed by a hard tightening of his jaw. “Why would you think that I channelled the money to a different purpose.”“I don't know, you tell me.” I said, looking him straight in the eyes. “Besides, it was an innocent question. All you have to do is give me an answer. Did you do so or not?” After staring at me with a cold gaze for a while, he suddenly let out a bark of laughter as i
Rayna's POV.The sound of shoes slapping against the tiled floor could be heard as I walked into the company's building and walked past the receptionist desk. The sound of ‘good morning’ greetings by employees from every corner, many of which were females on pantsuits wearing a healthy smile rippled through the silence that enveloped the environment.Rounding a corner, I took the spiral staircase which led to the boardroom as supposed to the elevator. All I wanted to do was get there on time. The elevator should do, right? Perhaps, I didn't just want to take it. Even after wasting so much time back at home, the driver wanted to waste more because only heaven knows where he suddenly disappeared to. If he hadn't returned on time, then maybe he would have lost his job, who knows? Climbing the spiral staircase, I gripped the rails as I continued to ascend with my head held up high. “We could have just taken the elevator ma'am.” Sera said, looking more exhausted than she sounded. “It woul
Rayna's POV.“Are you sure you'll be able to attend the board meeting?” Sera asked, her voice laced with concern as she stood by the side watching me dress my hair into a low bun. “It doesn't take anything, I could cancel it. All you've to do is say the words.” “There will be no need for that, Sera. Not to worry, a little stomach ache won't kill me. At least, not yet.” I said, turning to face her with a smile. “Besides, this meeting is long overdue, and I don't want to keep pushing it further anymore. Also, Sebastian has been a thorn in my flesh lately; I need to put him in his place. And, I have to do it today.” “Alright. However, you'll still need to visit the hospital after you're done with the meeting, ma'am.” she said, handing me my satchel bag. “We don't have to overlook the situation. Prevention is better than cure.” “I know, dear.” I said, receiving the bag from her. “If it wasn't an important meeting, then I would have gone straight to the hospital. However, like I said, I
Rayna's POV.For a moment, I feel silent, rooted to the spot as I tried to wrap my head around Maggie's words. It felt as if my heart had literally stopped beating. Tilting my head to both sides as if trying to weigh my options, while actually trying to understand how she could have made such a mistake, I narrowed my gaze.“I don't think I understand what you just said, can you explain better please?” I asked, as a look of confusion masked my face. “What do you mean by you used the wrong ingredient?” “I should have been more careful ma'am, but I was carried away.” she said, her eyes suddenly moist with tears. “As I returned to the kitchen to do the dishes, I realized that I'd used the wrong ingredient.” “You were carried away?” I asked, letting out a laughing scoff. “Then why are you still here? If you were carried away, why are you still here or did what carry you suddenly return you?” “I am so sorry ma'am.” she said, with an apologetic look in her eyes. “Don't tell me that!” I s
Rayna's POV.Tapping a foot as if counting down like a time bomb about to go off soon, I glanced at the wall clock. However, after what seemed like waiting for a lifetime, Maggie finally showed up in the dining with a food tray in her grip. “Do you realize that this is your first day on the job?” I asked, with a furrowed brow. “What took you so long?” “I am so sorry ma'am, but I had to begin the process again just like you asked me to.” she said, transferring the meal from the tray to the table. “And I do realize that it's my first day, but…” “You will do better, right?” I asked, cutting her off. “I have heard that over a million and one time already today so, it's not difficult to know that it would be your next words.” “I am so sorry ma'am.” she said, taking a step backward with head bowed and hands clasped in front of her. “Well, sorry won't make those improvements for you.” I said, bringing the meal closer to myself as I took off the lid used to cover it. “So, you'd better st
Rayna's POV.Returning to the sitting room, I realized that I'd spent over thirty minutes talking to Maggie as I lifted my gaze to the wall clock by the side. I knew what that meant; my favorite TV show would have come to an end or might be about to. But, I'd to do what needed to be done. No one should be that careless. And to think that I'd barely stayed in my own house for two good hours and there was already a threat of burning it to the ground even made me more angry.Nonetheless, I ambled towards the sitting room with hopes that I would be lucky enough to see the show even if it was for a minute or two since I missed the last one due to a busy schedule. However, I also knew that the chances of getting a minute or two out of the show was as slim as the strand of hair caressing my forehead. Arriving at the sitting room, I settled on the couch and just as I thought, the show was over. On display on the TV screen were the cast and characters. “Not again.” I muttered the words under
Rayna's POV.Turning off the shower, I reached for my body towel which was hanging on the door. After wrapping it around my body, I reached for my face towel too and then stepped out of the bathroom. However, I'd barely stepped out with the face towel pressed to a side of my face when Maggie approached me.“What would you like to have for dinner, ma'am?” she asked, standing by the side.“What says the time?” I asked, proceeding to my room as I dried my hair with the towel. “Is it 6pm yet?”“I am afraid it's a few minutes to seven, ma'am.” she said, following behind me.“Really?” I paused, turning around to face her with a surprised look. “I guess the day is shorter than I think. Anyway, I would love for you to make me pasta.” “Alright ma'am, I'll get to work immediately.” she said, turning to leave. However, she'd barely taken a step from where she stood when I called back her attention.“One more thing,” I said, indicating with a raised finger. “Do not make it soggy. Understood?” “
