Rayna's POV.
The sound of shoes slapping against the tiled floor could be heard as I walked into the company's building and walked past the receptionist desk. The sound of ‘good morning’ greetings by employees from every corner, many of which were females on pantsuits wearing a healthy smile rippled through the silence that enveloped the environment.
Rounding a corner, I took the spiral staircase which led to the boardroom as supposed to the elevator. All I wanted to do was get there on time. The elevator should do, right? Perhaps, I didn't just want to take it. Even after wasting so much time back at home, the driver wanted to waste more because only heaven knows where he suddenly disappeared to. If he hadn't returned on time, then maybe he would have lost his job, who knows? Climbing the spiral staircase, I gripped the rails as I continued to ascend with my head held up high.
“We could have just taken the elevator ma'am.” Sera said, looking more exhausted than she sounded. “It would have been a better option.”
“Yes. Actually, not would. It's always a better option compared to walking on the staircase.” I said, with a knowing look. “However, you've got to be unpredictable sometimes. I figured they would all be expecting me through the doors of the elevator but then, I want no one to be familiar with my movements. Besides, the elevator could go down someday. I should start practicing.”
“I understand ma'am.” she said, trying to catch her breath. “However, considering the meeting which you have in five minutes time, I suppose that day isn't today. So, we could have just taken the elevator.”
The words had barely left her lips when I took the last step, arriving at the third floor then I turned and proceeded towards the boardroom which was on the left side. Again, I'd barely taken two steps from where I was, when employees began to greet me again. Meanwhile, as I proceeded towards the boardroom which was in sight, a young lady with a topknot hairstyle, perhaps in her late twenties, approached me with a document which she embraced tightly on her chest.
“Good morning, ma'am.” she greeted, with a slight bow of her head. “My name is Laura and I would like to commend your dressing. You look so good ma'am.”
“Thank you, Laura.” I said, the words seemed to drag themselves from my throat as I shot a surprised look at her.
“I was employed a few months ago, ma'am.” she said, with a smile on her lips. “I work with the financial department as the financial analyst.”
“Alright Laura, I am in a hurry right now.” I said, taking pauses in between my words as I glanced at my wristwatch. “But not to worry, I'll call you when I'm less busy, alright?”
“Thank you ma'am.” she said, as a smile pushed her lips to the side.
I knew what she wanted, but I just had to tell her that so she would leave immediately. If anything, I have lost count of the number of people who'd done the same thing. However, it was becoming more of a ritual these days than before. Not a day goes by without having an employee introduce themselves to me. And the beautiful thing is that they all appear new to me.
In the meantime, I gripped the doorknob of the boardroom, turned it open and then stepped in. As I did, the board members who were initially seated on the executive chairs round the U-shaped desk, rose to their feet and with a slight bow, they all greeted me.
“Good morning to you all too.” I said, with a wave of my hand as I proceeded to my chair which was at the head of the table.
Meanwhile, Sera had gone before me, so she pulled the chair back a little for me to sit down. And as I did, the other members of the board did the same too. Although, I'd been monitoring the affairs of things even before coming down to New York but then, there seems to be a misreport about some finances. And, that was what I wanted to address.
“Let me start by thanking you all for arriving here earlier than expected.” I said, titling my head to both sides as I glanced at everyone on one side and the opposite side of the desk. “However, without further ado, we'll begin the meeting immediately.”
I clasped my hands on the table with a smile on my lips as I awaited Sera to take it up from there.
“On the fifth of May, a bill of five million dollars was presented to the management of the company for the commissioning of a building project which would serve as an extension of the company,” she paused, swiping a finger on the screen of the device in her grip as she moved on to the next page. “To see that the project was set in motion, the bill was approved. However, after going through the expenses again last week we discovered that there were some errors in the figures.”
“Malcolm, you're the chief financial officer, what do you have to say about this?” I asked, titling my head to the side as I turned to him with a raised brow. “It turns out over a million dollar could have been recovered. What happened to it?”
“I know nothing about that.” he said, shooting side glances at Sebastian who sat directly opposite him on the other side of the table. “I was only asked to present the bill to you.”
“You were only asked to present the bill to me, right?” I asked, letting out a laughing scoff. “Can you even listen to yourself right now? You were asked? Were you under some kind of pressure or what?”
“No, ma'am, I wasn't.” he said, dropping his head as his face grew warm with embarrassment.
“Then give me a reasonable explanation to this.” I said, my voice almost rising to a scream. “Give me something to work with and not excuses.”
“I am so sorry ma'am.” he said, evading my gaze.
“Of course, you are.” I said, turning to face Sebastian. “As the deputy CEO, you should have noticed that something wasn't right in the bill they presented. Didn't you?”
“Well, it seems like I've been having some issues with my eyes lately.” he said, with a hint of sarcasm edging his lips as he adjusted his glasses.
In reaction to what he said, a good number of the board members burst into laughter.
“Or, it could have been that you diverted the money to something else, isn't that so?”
Rayna's POV.I guess I hit a nerve when I said those words because the silence afterward was almost deafening. I could feel it; it had been long coming. However, deciding not to say a thing about it didn't mean that I didn't know what was going on, or what he was up to. I just wanted to give him a little more time to clean up his mess before I would act. However, he must have taken me for a fool because of my silence. Not just him, but every other person who's worked with him or better still, who helped him in some way would feel the heat. “What are you trying to say?” he asked, his formerly calm face was disturbed by a hard tightening of his jaw. “Why would you think that I channelled the money to a different purpose.”“I don't know, you tell me.” I said, looking him straight in the eyes. “Besides, it was an innocent question. All you have to do is give me an answer. Did you do so or not?” After staring at me with a cold gaze for a while, he suddenly let out a bark of laughter as i
Rayna's POV.“Ma'am, you called for me.” Laura said, standing before me with both hands clasped in front to her. “I came down here immediately I got your message.” “Good. You seem so promising.” I said, lowering the screen of my laptop and lifting my gaze to her with a smile on my lips as I leaned back on my chair. “You may sit, please.” I gestured with a hand towards the chair on the other side of the desk.“So, how can I be of help to you ma'am?” she asked, with an excited catch in her voice. “I will do my everything in my power to give you the best results.” Well, I have also heard that a good number of times but in the end, many of those who said so fell short of expectations. However, like I said earlier, she appeared rather promising and would do a good job for me. “I just need your help with something.” I said, leaning forward as I clasped my hands together on the desk. “Anything ma'am, just tell me.” she said, her eyes brightened at the words. “I will get it done as soon
Rayna's POV.I'd barely dropped my gaze to the document which I'd to review after Laura exited my office when I heard a knock on the door. Earlier, I figured that she wanted to say something but then, it seemed like she forgot and perhaps, now she'd remember hence her return to my office. Although, there were still loads of documents for me to review but then, I knew that I'd to answer her before going on with any other thing.“You may come in, please.” I said, pushing the document to the side as I lifted my gaze to the door, awaiting her presence. However, as the doorknob was turned open from the other side and then pushed open, a rather familiar figure revealed himself as he took some steps into my office. As my gaze fell on him, I almost jumped out of my skin.“Hello,” he mouthed, lifting a hand and shaking his fingers as a cynical smile pushed his lips to the side. “Missed me?” Staring at him, I blinked my eyes rapidly in confusion. How was it possible that he was standing right
Chapter one Rayna"You're not going to school today until you're done cleaning!" My mother roared at me. I turned, startled, "I'm done with my chores, ma." Her only response was a resounding slap that has my neck snapping to the side. I cup my flaming cheeks. "You useless girl," she snarled, advancing at me, "How dare you talk back to me? It seems you're beginning to get too audacious." I staggered away from the wrath blazing in her eyes. "What's going on up there, darling?" Uncle Timothy's voice barked from below. I glanced over my shoulder to see my silver haired uncle standing in the middle the living room and glaring up at me. "She refused to do the cleaning," mother smirked at me. "Th-that's not true," I rushed to say, "I've cleaned the house already." "What about the garage at the back? Did you clean it?" She raised one brow at me. I gaped at her. Since when did cleaning the garage become one of my duties too? As if it wasn't enough that I had to clean this endless m
Chapter twoRayna"what's that pathetic orphan doing here?" I heard someone sneer. "Ewww, what is she wearing?" "They shouldn't keep on letting her in here." "Can't she make an effort to wash her uniform?" "Wash? Ugh, she needs to throw those rags away and buy new ones. She looks like something they dug up from the trash. Yuck." Keeping my head down, I ignored all their snide words as I walked past the rows of desks and settled in my lone desk at the very back of the class. " You're late!" Mr. Ivory barked at me, "If this continues to repeat itself, you'll have to face detention." My heart began to pound in my chest. Detention was the worst thing they could do to me because the one time I hadn't come home on time, my mother had locked me in my room with no food or water for three days. "I'm sorry, sir. It won't happen again." "I've heard that before," he rolled his eyes and turned back to the board, "Now, on the topic of differentiation_" I tried my best to listen but not on
Chapter three Rayna"Why are you dressed like a slut!" My fiance's cold voice lashed against my skin like a whip as I climbed into the back of his Cadillac at the end of the school day."Good afternoon, sir," I kept my eyes lowered and my tone mild. Jared Winehall, my forty six year old fiance was a man that was prone to extreme anger. He lashed out at the drop of a hat and I had been on the receiving end of the back of his hand countlessly. I had also tasted the bite of his whip against my back severally. I had had to learn fast to be as demure as possible if I didn't want a repeat experience. "I asked you a question!" He barked, eyes fixed on the hint of exposed thighs. I had been wearing the same uniform for about five years now and it had gotten shorter as I had aged. It was barely two inches above my knee now though. "I'm sorry, sir," I replied meekly, "I have outgrown the uniform." "I don't believe you, you lying whore," his hand lashed out and clamped around my neck. I l
Chapter four Rayna"Stop at the one of the stores and get her a scarf and a necklace," My fiance spoke into the intercom fixed into the car. Then he turned dark eyes at me, "For your neck," he explains, "We both know it was an accident, but I would hate for people to think a man like me is an abuser."I nodded, "Of course." The car pulled to a stop across a street which boasted designer stores and I heard the passenger door open. Jared's assistant Lilian stepped out of the car, wearing her usual pinched face expression as she crossed over to the Hermes store. I hated the assistant almost as much as I hated my fiance. She acted like her boss was the best thing to have ever happened to the human population and treated me like garbage. Fifteen minutes later, she was back with a box tucked under her arm. She opened the door and passed Jared the box before walking to the passenger side of the car. The fat man passed me the box, "Open it." With a feigned shy smile, I pulled open the
Chapter five Rayna/AyaSix years later "Welcome to New York," the automated voice announced from the airport speakers. I took one deep breath and smiled. Welcome indeed. Once upon a time this city had destroyed me, but now, I was going to use this city to destroy others. My phone began to buzz and I picked the call, pressing the device to my ear, "Yes?" "Ma'am," the soft voice of my assistant began, "Welcome to New York. I've sent the driver to pick you and he should be in a black Mercedes right outside. I couldn't join him because there was a problem with your new house and I had to be on site to handle it." "It's fine, Sera," I told her, "I don't need you shadowing me twenty four hours of the day. I'll see you when I get there." With that I hung up and made my way out of the airport building, my five inch Manolo Blahnik heels clicking against the tiled floor. Several heads turned as I walked by and I smiled, amused. My presence was always sure to cause a stir. With my waist

Rayna's POV.“Are you sure you'll be able to attend the board meeting?” Sera asked, her voice laced with concern as she stood by the side watching me dress my hair into a low bun. “It doesn't take anything, I could cancel it. All you've to do is say the words.” “There will be no need for that, Sera. Not to worry, a little stomach ache won't kill me. At least, not yet.” I said, turning to face her with a smile. “Besides, this meeting is long overdue, and I don't want to keep pushing it further anymore. Also, Sebastian has been a thorn in my flesh lately; I need to put him in his place. And, I have to do it today.” “Alright. However, you'll still need to visit the hospital after you're done with the meeting, ma'am.” she said, handing me my satchel bag. “We don't have to overlook the situation. Prevention is better than cure.” “I know, dear.” I said, receiving the bag from her. “If it wasn't an important meeting, then I would have gone straight to the hospital. However, like I said, I
Rayna's POV.For a moment, I feel silent, rooted to the spot as I tried to wrap my head around Maggie's words. It felt as if my heart had literally stopped beating. Tilting my head to both sides as if trying to weigh my options, while actually trying to understand how she could have made such a mistake, I narrowed my gaze.“I don't think I understand what you just said, can you explain better please?” I asked, as a look of confusion masked my face. “What do you mean by you used the wrong ingredient?” “I should have been more careful ma'am, but I was carried away.” she said, her eyes suddenly moist with tears. “As I returned to the kitchen to do the dishes, I realized that I'd used the wrong ingredient.” “You were carried away?” I asked, letting out a laughing scoff. “Then why are you still here? If you were carried away, why are you still here or did what carry you suddenly return you?” “I am so sorry ma'am.” she said, with an apologetic look in her eyes. “Don't tell me that!” I s
Rayna's POV.Tapping a foot as if counting down like a time bomb about to go off soon, I glanced at the wall clock. However, after what seemed like waiting for a lifetime, Maggie finally showed up in the dining with a food tray in her grip. “Do you realize that this is your first day on the job?” I asked, with a furrowed brow. “What took you so long?” “I am so sorry ma'am, but I had to begin the process again just like you asked me to.” she said, transferring the meal from the tray to the table. “And I do realize that it's my first day, but…” “You will do better, right?” I asked, cutting her off. “I have heard that over a million and one time already today so, it's not difficult to know that it would be your next words.” “I am so sorry ma'am.” she said, taking a step backward with head bowed and hands clasped in front of her. “Well, sorry won't make those improvements for you.” I said, bringing the meal closer to myself as I took off the lid used to cover it. “So, you'd better st
Rayna's POV.Returning to the sitting room, I realized that I'd spent over thirty minutes talking to Maggie as I lifted my gaze to the wall clock by the side. I knew what that meant; my favorite TV show would have come to an end or might be about to. But, I'd to do what needed to be done. No one should be that careless. And to think that I'd barely stayed in my own house for two good hours and there was already a threat of burning it to the ground even made me more angry.Nonetheless, I ambled towards the sitting room with hopes that I would be lucky enough to see the show even if it was for a minute or two since I missed the last one due to a busy schedule. However, I also knew that the chances of getting a minute or two out of the show was as slim as the strand of hair caressing my forehead. Arriving at the sitting room, I settled on the couch and just as I thought, the show was over. On display on the TV screen were the cast and characters. “Not again.” I muttered the words under
Rayna's POV.Turning off the shower, I reached for my body towel which was hanging on the door. After wrapping it around my body, I reached for my face towel too and then stepped out of the bathroom. However, I'd barely stepped out with the face towel pressed to a side of my face when Maggie approached me.“What would you like to have for dinner, ma'am?” she asked, standing by the side.“What says the time?” I asked, proceeding to my room as I dried my hair with the towel. “Is it 6pm yet?”“I am afraid it's a few minutes to seven, ma'am.” she said, following behind me.“Really?” I paused, turning around to face her with a surprised look. “I guess the day is shorter than I think. Anyway, I would love for you to make me pasta.” “Alright ma'am, I'll get to work immediately.” she said, turning to leave. However, she'd barely taken a step from where she stood when I called back her attention.“One more thing,” I said, indicating with a raised finger. “Do not make it soggy. Understood?” “
