Rayna's POV.
Returning to the sitting room, I realized that I'd spent over thirty minutes talking to Maggie as I lifted my gaze to the wall clock by the side. I knew what that meant; my favorite TV show would have come to an end or might be about to. But, I'd to do what needed to be done. No one should be that careless. And to think that I'd barely stayed in my own house for two good hours and there was already a threat of burning it to the ground even made me more angry.
Nonetheless, I ambled towards the sitting room with hopes that I would be lucky enough to see the show even if it was for a minute or two since I missed the last one due to a busy schedule. However, I also knew that the chances of getting a minute or two out of the show was as slim as the strand of hair caressing my forehead. Arriving at the sitting room, I settled on the couch and just as I thought, the show was over. On display on the TV screen were the cast and characters.
“Not again.” I muttered the words under my breath, running a jerky hand through my hair. “It is all because of you.”
Perhaps, I should have just talked to her a little, but if I did just that, then she might not have realized the gravity of her mistake. Frustrated, I tossed my head back on the headrest of the couch, glancing at the ceiling while clenching the TV remote with a death grip.
Letting out a heavy sigh, I closed my eyes to think. I'd freed my schedule just to be able to see this week's edition of the program but in the end I still missed out on it which means I'd have to wait until the next week. The thought of that made me squeeze the remote in my grip, almost crushing it.
“Ma'am? Are you alright?” — Onyx asked, her voice cutting through my thought like a whip.
As I heard her, I opened my eyes. She was standing in front of me with a long brush which she wanted to use on the rug.
“Is there a problem?” I asked, with an edge to my voice. “Or is there something you need?”
“No, ma'am. Not at all.” she said, with a smile on her lips. “However, I noticed that you were with the TV remote, and you were almost about to crush it in your hand. So, I thought you were having a nightmare and that's why I decided to call your attention to it.”
“Thank you, but I wasn't having a nightmare.” I said, smiling back at her. “I am fine. But, why does it look like you need something?”
“Nothing ma'am, I just need you to lift your legs a little above the floor so I can clean the rug.” she said, pointing to the exact spot she intended to clean.
“Have you been waiting for so long?” I asked, narrowing my gaze at the words with a feeling that she'd been watching me for quite some time.
“No, ma'am, I just got here, and then I realized what you were doing to the remote.” she said, dropping her gaze to the object in my grip. “However, if you'll allow me. I need to brush the rug now.”
“Alright, go ahead.” I said, lifting my legs to the couch.
With that, she brushed the rug and in no time, she was done.
“I am done ma'am, you can drop your legs now.” she said, standing at the other side while holding the brush vertically in her grip.
“Thank you.” I said, dropping my legs.
I'd barely done that when my stomach made a sound. In all honesty, if I knew that it would take this long before getting something to eat, then I would have just stopped by an eatery. Or better still, order an Uber eat. If not, what's the whole point of getting a cook who wouldn't deliver your meals on time? Meanwhile, as my stomach grumbled earlier, it seemed like she noticed it because she suddenly stopped working and instead, tilted her head to both sides, as if expecting the sound again to be sure that she hadn't heard wrong.
“Is there something wrong?” I asked, with a tinge of curiosity in my voice. “Does your neck hurt from the job? If that's the case then you should go get some rest already.”
“Thank you ma'am, but I'm fine.” she said, still titling her head to both sides with narrowed eyes.
On the other hand, I wasn't fine. I had no idea whatsoever when Maggie would bring in my food. Furthermore, I didn't know when my stomach would grumble again, but I was certain that I didn't want her to be there when it does because I was almost as certain as the break of a new day that it would make that sound again.
“Are you sure you don't want to take a break?” I asked, the words seemed to drag themselves from my throat as I shot her a subtle ‘go somewhere else’ glare.
“Yes ma'am, I don't.” she said, not catching a hint of the glare that I shot her. “I only have this place to clean and after that, I'm done with my work for the day ma'am. So, I'll just quickly…”
“You know what? Uhm,” I paused, placing a finger on my lips while holding a sidelong glance. “You can do that tomorrow.”
“I understand your concerns ma'am, but I would rather do it tonight.” she said, clenching the brush to return to work.
“Take it from me, you can do it tomorrow.” I said, flashing a smile across her worried face. “Don't worry, I won't delay your pay.”
I figured that she didn't want to listen to me because of the words I said to Maggie earlier. And, she didn't want the same for herself.
“Alright ma'am.” she said, picking up the dustpan from the floor.
With both objects in her grip, she walked away.
Heaving a rather depressing sigh, I closed my eyes and formed my hand into a fist as my stomach bit me painfully.
“Maggie!”
Rayna's POV.Tapping a foot as if counting down like a time bomb about to go off soon, I glanced at the wall clock. However, after what seemed like waiting for a lifetime, Maggie finally showed up in the dining with a food tray in her grip. “Do you realize that this is your first day on the job?” I asked, with a furrowed brow. “What took you so long?” “I am so sorry ma'am, but I had to begin the process again just like you asked me to.” she said, transferring the meal from the tray to the table. “And I do realize that it's my first day, but…” “You will do better, right?” I asked, cutting her off. “I have heard that over a million and one time already today so, it's not difficult to know that it would be your next words.” “I am so sorry ma'am.” she said, taking a step backward with head bowed and hands clasped in front of her. “Well, sorry won't make those improvements for you.” I said, bringing the meal closer to myself as I took off the lid used to cover it. “So, you'd better st
Rayna's POV.For a moment, I feel silent, rooted to the spot as I tried to wrap my head around Maggie's words. It felt as if my heart had literally stopped beating. Tilting my head to both sides as if trying to weigh my options, while actually trying to understand how she could have made such a mistake, I narrowed my gaze.“I don't think I understand what you just said, can you explain better please?” I asked, as a look of confusion masked my face. “What do you mean by you used the wrong ingredient?” “I should have been more careful ma'am, but I was carried away.” she said, her eyes suddenly moist with tears. “As I returned to the kitchen to do the dishes, I realized that I'd used the wrong ingredient.” “You were carried away?” I asked, letting out a laughing scoff. “Then why are you still here? If you were carried away, why are you still here or did what carry you suddenly return you?” “I am so sorry ma'am.” she said, with an apologetic look in her eyes. “Don't tell me that!” I s
Rayna's POV.“Are you sure you'll be able to attend the board meeting?” Sera asked, her voice laced with concern as she stood by the side watching me dress my hair into a low bun. “It doesn't take anything, I could cancel it. All you've to do is say the words.” “There will be no need for that, Sera. Not to worry, a little stomach ache won't kill me. At least, not yet.” I said, turning to face her with a smile. “Besides, this meeting is long overdue, and I don't want to keep pushing it further anymore. Also, Sebastian has been a thorn in my flesh lately; I need to put him in his place. And, I have to do it today.” “Alright. However, you'll still need to visit the hospital after you're done with the meeting, ma'am.” she said, handing me my satchel bag. “We don't have to overlook the situation. Prevention is better than cure.” “I know, dear.” I said, receiving the bag from her. “If it wasn't an important meeting, then I would have gone straight to the hospital. However, like I said, I

Not just him, but every other person who's worked with him or better still, who helped him in some way would feel the heat. “What are you trying to say?” he asked, his formerly calm face was disturbed by a hard tightening of his jaw. “Why would you think that I channelled the money to a different purpose.”“I don't know, you tell me.” I said, looking him straight in the eyes. “Besides, it was an innocent question. Chapter one Rayna"You're not going to school today until you're done cleaning!" My mother roared at me. I turned, startled, "I'm done with my chores, ma." Her only response was a resounding slap that has my neck snapping to the side. I cup my flaming cheeks. "You useless girl," she snarled, advancing at me, "How dare you talk back to me? It seems you're beginning to get too audacious." I staggered away from the wrath blazing in her eyes. "What's going on up there, darling?" Uncle Timothy's voice barked from below. I glanced over my shoulder to see my silver haired uncle standing in the middle the living room and glaring up at me. "She refused to do the cleaning," mother smirked at me. "Th-that's not true," I rushed to say, "I've cleaned the house already." "What about the garage at the back? Did you clean it?" She raised one brow at me. I gaped at her. Since when did cleaning the garage become one of my duties too? As if it wasn't enough that I had to clean this endless m
Chapter twoRayna"what's that pathetic orphan doing here?" I heard someone sneer. "Ewww, what is she wearing?" "They shouldn't keep on letting her in here." "Can't she make an effort to wash her uniform?" "Wash? Ugh, she needs to throw those rags away and buy new ones. She looks like something they dug up from the trash. Yuck." Keeping my head down, I ignored all their snide words as I walked past the rows of desks and settled in my lone desk at the very back of the class. " You're late!" Mr. Ivory barked at me, "If this continues to repeat itself, you'll have to face detention." My heart began to pound in my chest. Detention was the worst thing they could do to me because the one time I hadn't come home on time, my mother had locked me in my room with no food or water for three days. "I'm sorry, sir. It won't happen again." "I've heard that before," he rolled his eyes and turned back to the board, "Now, on the topic of differentiation_" I tried my best to listen but not on
Chapter three Rayna"Why are you dressed like a slut!" My fiance's cold voice lashed against my skin like a whip as I climbed into the back of his Cadillac at the end of the school day."Good afternoon, sir," I kept my eyes lowered and my tone mild. Jared Winehall, my forty six year old fiance was a man that was prone to extreme anger. He lashed out at the drop of a hat and I had been on the receiving end of the back of his hand countlessly. I had also tasted the bite of his whip against my back severally. I had had to learn fast to be as demure as possible if I didn't want a repeat experience. "I asked you a question!" He barked, eyes fixed on the hint of exposed thighs. I had been wearing the same uniform for about five years now and it had gotten shorter as I had aged. It was barely two inches above my knee now though. "I'm sorry, sir," I replied meekly, "I have outgrown the uniform." "I don't believe you, you lying whore," his hand lashed out and clamped around my neck. I l

Anyway, I would love for you to make me pasta.” “Alright ma'am, I'll get to work immediately.” she said, turning to leave. However, she'd barely taken a step from where she stood when I called back her attention.“One more thing,” I said, indicating with a raised finger. “Do not make it soggy. Rayna's POV.If she really thought that I would turn off the air conditioner because of her then she'd gotten it all wrong. All that drama back there? Come on, it was just a facade. I could only imagine how much her conscience would have pricked her. Well, that was if she had any. I wouldn't have gone through all that stress and then return to put off the air conditioner just to make my cook feel at home. It doesn't work that way. In the meantime, I pulled the fridge open, took out a chilled bottled water and a water glass. All that talk back there had suddenly made me thirsty. Closing the fridge, I returned to the sitting room. As I settled on the couch, I poured myself a glass of water. While I was at it, I could feel her gaze boring into my skin. Well, that was the only thing she could do; she couldn't dare meet my gaze. Nonetheless, I allowed her have the moment to herself. That is, if it would allow her breath. I filled the water glass halfway, and then dropped the half empty bo
Rayna's POV.“What are you waiting for?” I asked, walking back to the door as Maggie kept sweeping her gaze all over the door frame. “Aren't you going to come in?” I'd almost gotten to the sitting room when I realized that I couldn't hear any footsteps behind me. Turning around, I found her standing at the door. I don't know why she chose to remain there. Even after asking her to come in, she chose to remain outside. It wasn't as if she was a vampire waiting to be invited in. However, even if she was, then I'd invited her in already, so why was she still standing outside there glancing at the door frame like she'd seen it somewhere?“I am sorry, but I think I've made the wrong stop.” she said, looking more confused than her words sounded. “I don't think this is the place where I'm needed to work as a chef.” Meanwhile, as she was speaking, she made it so obvious that she was trying to evade my gaze. She couldn't even afford to make the slightest eye contact with me, but I knew why. I
