Rayna's POV.
Turning off the shower, I reached for my body towel which was hanging on the door. After wrapping it around my body, I reached for my face towel too and then stepped out of the bathroom. However, I'd barely stepped out with the face towel pressed to a side of my face when Maggie approached me.
“What would you like to have for dinner, ma'am?” she asked, standing by the side.
“What says the time?” I asked, proceeding to my room as I dried my hair with the towel. “Is it 6pm yet?”
“I am afraid it's a few minutes to seven, ma'am.” she said, following behind me.
“Really?” I paused, turning around to face her with a surprised look. “I guess the day is shorter than I think. Anyway, I would love for you to make me pasta.”
“Alright ma'am, I'll get to work immediately.” she said, turning to leave.
However, she'd barely taken a step from where she stood when I called back her attention.
“One more thing,” I said, indicating with a raised finger. “Do not make it soggy. Understood?”
“Yes, ma'am.” she said, returning to the kitchen.
On the other hand, I proceeded to my room. Gripping the doorknob, I turned it open, went inside and then shut the door behind me. Having wiped my face dry, I tossed the face towel on the bed and then ambled towards my wardrobe. If Maggie hadn't told me the time back there, I wouldn't have known that we were this close to nightfall. In my head, I thought I still had enough time. Enough to get a few things done before finally calling it a day. However, as it stands, I guess I would just have to push whatever I had in mind to do to the next day.
With that thought in mind, I opened my wardrobe. Darting my gaze back and forth, I searched for something to put on. I just needed something classy, yet comfortable. On the extreme end, I noticed a black knee-length gown. Pulling it out from the rack, I glanced at it for a few seconds. Standing in front of the wall mirror, I placed it in front of me to know how it would look on me.
Ever since it was given to me as a gift by one of female business partner, I had only tried it once. And after that, it seemed like every other outfit to me. Without further ado, I slipped into it and then stepped out of my room. Since it was only a few minutes to seven, it meant that my favorite TV show would soon air. I missed out on the last episode, so I couldn't miss out on this too. Picking up the TV remote, I settled on the couch and the pushed the power button.
However, as I waited for it to boot, a burning smell hit me. I wrinkled my nose as I perceived it. But then, I believed Maggie had it under control, so I returned my attention to the TV. Not quite long after I did, the scent returned. This time, even worse than the previous. I righted myself from the couch and stomped towards the kitchen. However, she wasn't in there. Just then, I heard some steps approaching from behind.
“What is going on here?” I asked, with an edge to my voice as I turned to face her. “What is this awful smell?”
Perhaps, she hadn't realized what was going on. However, as I made mention of the smell, her eyes flashed with realization. Immediately, she bolted into the kitchen and turned off the gas.
“Are you being serious right now?” I asked, letting out a laughing scoff. “You can't keep an eye on what you're doing in here?”
“I am so sorry ma'am.”
“Don't tell me that you're sorry!” I shot back, my eyes glittering with anger. “It is not even up to an hour, and you want to burn down my house, Is that it?”
“No, ma'am, I wouldn't dare do that.”
“Of course, what else was I expecting you to say?” I asked, not expecting a reply from her. “So, should it happen that I stepped out and this happened, I would be homeless because I hired you, right?”
“I made a mistake.” she said, falling on her knees. “It won't happen again. I promise you ma'am. I'll do better.”
“And how am I sure that it won't happen again, huh?” I asked, barking at her. “There is no guarantee that this won't happen again. If you'd to step out, what stops you from turning off the gas?”
“I was going to do that, but somehow it escaped my mind.” she said, her eyes suddenly moist with tears. “However, I will make sure it doesn't happen again.”
“Oh, it escaped your mind, right? I see.” I said, with a hint of sarcasm edging my lips. “Perhaps, when your pay comes in a little late, then I'll say the same words to you.”
“Don't do that to me ma'am, I beg of you.” she said, gripping the hem of my gown.
“Get those hands off of me before I lose my temper.” I said, my voice matching the hardness of my gaze.
As the words left my lips, she quickly let go of my gown and then dropped her head as her face grew warm with embarrassment.
“I am so sorry ma'am.” she said, a wedge of pain and tears breaking her voice into two. “I will be more careful, but please don't delay my pay.”
“Well, I hope the thing giving off that awful scent isn't what you're preparing for me to eat, or is it?” I asked, my brows merging into a savage line. “If you know what's best for you then I'd suggest that you do away with that and start over again.”
“Alright ma'am, I will.” she said, nodding her head.
“That doesn't mean it shouldn't be ready by 8pm.” I said, with an edge to my voice. “If it comes in later, then I'll still cut your pay, understood?”
Rayna's POV.Returning to the sitting room, I realized that I'd spent over thirty minutes talking to Maggie as I lifted my gaze to the wall clock by the side. I knew what that meant; my favorite TV show would have come to an end or might be about to. But, I'd to do what needed to be done. No one should be that careless. And to think that I'd barely stayed in my own house for two good hours and there was already a threat of burning it to the ground even made me more angry.Nonetheless, I ambled towards the sitting room with hopes that I would be lucky enough to see the show even if it was for a minute or two since I missed the last one due to a busy schedule. However, I also knew that the chances of getting a minute or two out of the show was as slim as the strand of hair caressing my forehead. Arriving at the sitting room, I settled on the couch and just as I thought, the show was over. On display on the TV screen were the cast and characters. “Not again.” I muttered the words under
Rayna's POV.Tapping a foot as if counting down like a time bomb about to go off soon, I glanced at the wall clock. However, after what seemed like waiting for a lifetime, Maggie finally showed up in the dining with a food tray in her grip. “Do you realize that this is your first day on the job?” I asked, with a furrowed brow. “What took you so long?” “I am so sorry ma'am, but I had to begin the process again just like you asked me to.” she said, transferring the meal from the tray to the table. “And I do realize that it's my first day, but…” “You will do better, right?” I asked, cutting her off. “I have heard that over a million and one time already today so, it's not difficult to know that it would be your next words.” “I am so sorry ma'am.” she said, taking a step backward with head bowed and hands clasped in front of her. “Well, sorry won't make those improvements for you.” I said, bringing the meal closer to myself as I took off the lid used to cover it. “So, you'd better st
Rayna's POV.For a moment, I feel silent, rooted to the spot as I tried to wrap my head around Maggie's words. It felt as if my heart had literally stopped beating. Tilting my head to both sides as if trying to weigh my options, while actually trying to understand how she could have made such a mistake, I narrowed my gaze.“I don't think I understand what you just said, can you explain better please?” I asked, as a look of confusion masked my face. “What do you mean by you used the wrong ingredient?” “I should have been more careful ma'am, but I was carried away.” she said, her eyes suddenly moist with tears. “As I returned to the kitchen to do the dishes, I realized that I'd used the wrong ingredient.” “You were carried away?” I asked, letting out a laughing scoff. “Then why are you still here? If you were carried away, why are you still here or did what carry you suddenly return you?” “I am so sorry ma'am.” she said, with an apologetic look in her eyes. “Don't tell me that!” I s
Rayna's POV.“Are you sure you'll be able to attend the board meeting?” Sera asked, her voice laced with concern as she stood by the side watching me dress my hair into a low bun. “It doesn't take anything, I could cancel it. All you've to do is say the words.” “There will be no need for that, Sera. Not to worry, a little stomach ache won't kill me. At least, not yet.” I said, turning to face her with a smile. “Besides, this meeting is long overdue, and I don't want to keep pushing it further anymore. Also, Sebastian has been a thorn in my flesh lately; I need to put him in his place. And, I have to do it today.” “Alright. However, you'll still need to visit the hospital after you're done with the meeting, ma'am.” she said, handing me my satchel bag. “We don't have to overlook the situation. Prevention is better than cure.” “I know, dear.” I said, receiving the bag from her. “If it wasn't an important meeting, then I would have gone straight to the hospital. However, like I said, I
Chapter one Rayna"You're not going to school today until you're done cleaning!" My mother roared at me. I turned, startled, "I'm done with my chores, ma." Her only response was a resounding slap that has my neck snapping to the side. I cup my flaming cheeks. "You useless girl," she snarled, advancing at me, "How dare you talk back to me? It seems you're beginning to get too audacious." I staggered away from the wrath blazing in her eyes. "What's going on up there, darling?" Uncle Timothy's voice barked from below. I glanced over my shoulder to see my silver haired uncle standing in the middle the living room and glaring up at me. "She refused to do the cleaning," mother smirked at me. "Th-that's not true," I rushed to say, "I've cleaned the house already." "What about the garage at the back? Did you clean it?" She raised one brow at me. I gaped at her. Since when did cleaning the garage become one of my duties too? As if it wasn't enough that I had to clean this endless m
Chapter twoRayna"what's that pathetic orphan doing here?" I heard someone sneer. "Ewww, what is she wearing?" "They shouldn't keep on letting her in here." "Can't she make an effort to wash her uniform?" "Wash? Ugh, she needs to throw those rags away and buy new ones. She looks like something they dug up from the trash. Yuck." Keeping my head down, I ignored all their snide words as I walked past the rows of desks and settled in my lone desk at the very back of the class. " You're late!" Mr. Ivory barked at me, "If this continues to repeat itself, you'll have to face detention." My heart began to pound in my chest. Detention was the worst thing they could do to me because the one time I hadn't come home on time, my mother had locked me in my room with no food or water for three days. "I'm sorry, sir. It won't happen again." "I've heard that before," he rolled his eyes and turned back to the board, "Now, on the topic of differentiation_" I tried my best to listen but not on
Chapter three Rayna"Why are you dressed like a slut!" My fiance's cold voice lashed against my skin like a whip as I climbed into the back of his Cadillac at the end of the school day."Good afternoon, sir," I kept my eyes lowered and my tone mild. Jared Winehall, my forty six year old fiance was a man that was prone to extreme anger. He lashed out at the drop of a hat and I had been on the receiving end of the back of his hand countlessly. I had also tasted the bite of his whip against my back severally. I had had to learn fast to be as demure as possible if I didn't want a repeat experience. "I asked you a question!" He barked, eyes fixed on the hint of exposed thighs. I had been wearing the same uniform for about five years now and it had gotten shorter as I had aged. It was barely two inches above my knee now though. "I'm sorry, sir," I replied meekly, "I have outgrown the uniform." "I don't believe you, you lying whore," his hand lashed out and clamped around my neck. I l
Chapter four Rayna"Stop at the one of the stores and get her a scarf and a necklace," My fiance spoke into the intercom fixed into the car. Then he turned dark eyes at me, "For your neck," he explains, "We both know it was an accident, but I would hate for people to think a man like me is an abuser."I nodded, "Of course." The car pulled to a stop across a street which boasted designer stores and I heard the passenger door open. Jared's assistant Lilian stepped out of the car, wearing her usual pinched face expression as she crossed over to the Hermes store. I hated the assistant almost as much as I hated my fiance. She acted like her boss was the best thing to have ever happened to the human population and treated me like garbage. Fifteen minutes later, she was back with a box tucked under her arm. She opened the door and passed Jared the box before walking to the passenger side of the car. The fat man passed me the box, "Open it." With a feigned shy smile, I pulled open the

Rayna's POV.If she really thought that I would turn off the air conditioner because of her then she'd gotten it all wrong. All that drama back there? Come on, it was just a facade. I could only imagine how much her conscience would have pricked her. Well, that was if she had any. I wouldn't have gone through all that stress and then return to put off the air conditioner just to make my cook feel at home. It doesn't work that way. In the meantime, I pulled the fridge open, took out a chilled bottled water and a water glass. All that talk back there had suddenly made me thirsty. Closing the fridge, I returned to the sitting room. As I settled on the couch, I poured myself a glass of water. While I was at it, I could feel her gaze boring into my skin. Well, that was the only thing she could do; she couldn't dare meet my gaze. Nonetheless, I allowed her have the moment to herself. That is, if it would allow her breath. I filled the water glass halfway, and then dropped the half empty bo
Rayna's POV.“What are you waiting for?” I asked, walking back to the door as Maggie kept sweeping her gaze all over the door frame. “Aren't you going to come in?” I'd almost gotten to the sitting room when I realized that I couldn't hear any footsteps behind me. Turning around, I found her standing at the door. I don't know why she chose to remain there. Even after asking her to come in, she chose to remain outside. It wasn't as if she was a vampire waiting to be invited in. However, even if she was, then I'd invited her in already, so why was she still standing outside there glancing at the door frame like she'd seen it somewhere?“I am sorry, but I think I've made the wrong stop.” she said, looking more confused than her words sounded. “I don't think this is the place where I'm needed to work as a chef.” Meanwhile, as she was speaking, she made it so obvious that she was trying to evade my gaze. She couldn't even afford to make the slightest eye contact with me, but I knew why. I
Rayna's POV.For someone like Maggie, she didn't need any interview. All she needed was payback, and I would do so with every of her payslip. In the meantime, a look of shock seemed to mask Sera's face as she stared at me. She knew I wasn't the type who would hire someone without having an interview with them or better still, a physical meeting with them, so I could understand the shock on her face. However, there was no point trying to understand a decision which was birthed from an experience from years back. But then, I thought that was all. Expecting her to leave, instead she remained in front of me. “Is there something else?” I asked, with a tinge of curiosity in my voice. “Or do you have something to say.” “One more thing, ma'am.” she said, indicating with a raised finger. “You need someone who will clean the house, and I've got two options here.” “Good and fine.” I said, with a shrug of my shoulder. “There is no point going back and forth on this, the first one is hired.” “
Rayna's POV.Just as I expected that it would before I arrived here, my house was now in perfect shape and order. The decors were a sight to behold not to mention the lighting that snaked across the walls. It was everything and a little more than I ever imagined. Fortunately for me, I wouldn't pass the night out in the cold streets of New York but in my own house. All the while I checked out every corner and room in the house, Sera was with me throughout. In the meantime, I ambled towards the sitting room and then settled on the couch across the room, crossing my legs and spreading my arms out wide on the headrest.“Thank you for your hard work today, Sera.” I said, with a meaningful look in my eyes and a smile on my lips. “I do appreciate it.” “I am only doing my job ma'am.” she said, holding a tab in her grip. “However, I am glad that you like it.” “Like it?” I asked, letting out a laughing scoff. “I will tell you that it's an understatement to say that I like it. I love it.” If
