Rayna's POV.
If she really thought that I would turn off the air conditioner because of her then she'd gotten it all wrong. All that drama back there? Come on, it was just a facade. I could only imagine how much her conscience would have pricked her. Well, that was if she had any. I wouldn't have gone through all that stress and then return to put off the air conditioner just to make my cook feel at home. It doesn't work that way.
In the meantime, I pulled the fridge open, took out a chilled bottled water and a water glass. All that talk back there had suddenly made me thirsty. Closing the fridge, I returned to the sitting room. As I settled on the couch, I poured myself a glass of water. While I was at it, I could feel her gaze boring into my skin. Well, that was the only thing she could do; she couldn't dare meet my gaze. Nonetheless, I allowed her have the moment to herself. That is, if it would allow her breath. I filled the water glass halfway, and then dropped the half empty bottled water on the center table. As I lifted my face to her with the glass in my grip, she turned to the other side.
“So, tell me, what inspired your love for cooking?” I asked, crossing my legs as I lifted the water glass to my lips.
“Nothing in particular.” she said, a smile pushing her lips to the side. “I just realized I loved the magic in mixing two or more ingredients to get something nice.”
Meanwhile, as she spoke, I glanced at her through the water glass. From the way she sounded, it was rather obvious that she was beginning to gain her confidence which was what I wanted from the onset.
“Really? That's good, I must say.” I said, uncrossing my legs as I dropped the empty water glass on the center table. “How was high school for you?”
“Pardon?” — the word leapt out of her lips on their own accord accompanied by a look of shock.
“Don't tell me you didn't go to high school, didn't you?” I asked, raising a brow. “I mean, everyone went. However, you don't have to feel so bad if it isn't a prestigious school. Many of us had to take life as it came to us.”
“No, no that's not it.” she said, shaking her head. “I actually went to one of the best high schools. And, the experience was wholesome.”
“Now that you've mentioned it, I'm so envious of you.” I said, crossing my leg as I leaned forward. “For someone like me, I'd to endure constant bully and insults. You know, the big girls always picked on me back then. I guess it wasn't the same for you, or was it?”
“No, ma'am. It wasn't.” she said, her voice suddenly dropped as it felt like my words hit a nerve.
“See? I would say that you're so lucky.” I said, putting a hand on the armrest as I leaned my body weight to the side. “Did I mention that I tripped a few times too? I guess I didn't. I was always carried away so, I didn't really watch my steps.”
“I am so sorry to hear that, ma'am.” she said, swallowing the sudden dryness in her throat.
“There is no need for that, it was a long time ago.” I said, with a shrug of my shoulder. “However, I want to believe that I am not boring you with the memories of my school life, am I?”
“Not at all ma'am.” she said, shaking her head as she forced a smile through her lips. “I barely talk about my experiences, so it's fine.”
The words had barely left her lips when the doorbell rang. As the sound reached my ears, I figured that Onyx had arrived. Now, things were just about to get more interesting.
“Just a moment, I'll be back.” I said, righting myself from the couch as I ambled towards the door.
Lifting a hand, I gripped the doorknob and turned it open. Standing in front of me was a young lady with a ponytail hairstyle.
“You must be lady Onyx, right?” I asked, even though I knew the answer in my heart.
“Yes, ma'am.” she said, with a subtle nod of her head. “I am here for lady Aya.”
“That would be me.” I said, with a smile on my lips. “Please, do well to come in.”
I stepped aside for her to walk through. Lifting a foot, she took a step in. However, after she walked two more steps past me, she paused. Meanwhile, I didn't even notice that she was waiting, not until I shut the door and turned around to return to the sitting room that I found her standing at arm's length from me.
“Is there something wrong?” I asked, with a tinge of curiosity in my voice. “Why are you standing there? The sitting room is over there.”
I pointed in the direction.
“There is nothing wrong ma'am.” she said, shaking her head. “I was only waiting to go in with you.”
“Really? I didn't think that was still a thing around here, but thank you.” I said, walking past her as I proceeded to the sitting room while she followed behind.
“Have a seat.” I said, gesturing with a hand.
With my permission, she settled on the same couch that Maggie sat on. However, she sat on the opposite side, leaving a huge space between them. Staring at them, they seemed like similar poles of a magnet, repelling themselves. From that I could tell that they might have a problem getting along.
“Well, now that we are all here, I presume that a proper introduction would do.” I said, darting my gaze back and forth as I glanced at the both of them. “So, I'll go first. My name is Aya Jacobs and you both will be working for me. If you have any questions, kindly ask.”
They both exchanged puzzled glances. However, after waiting for a minute or so without a response from them, I took their silence as an answer.
“Very well then, it seems that neither of you have got anything to ask.” I said, with a smile on my lips as I took the device on the table. “So Onyx, you're to clean the house twice every day. And, Maggie, breakfast should be ready by 4am, and dinner by 8pm.”
“Breakfast by 4am?” she asked, as a look of shock seemed to mask her face.
“You heard me. Or you have a problem with that?”
Rayna's POV.Turning off the shower, I reached for my body towel which was hanging on the door. After wrapping it around my body, I reached for my face towel too and then stepped out of the bathroom. However, I'd barely stepped out with the face towel pressed to a side of my face when Maggie approached me.“What would you like to have for dinner, ma'am?” she asked, standing by the side.“What says the time?” I asked, proceeding to my room as I dried my hair with the towel. “Is it 6pm yet?”“I am afraid it's a few minutes to seven, ma'am.” she said, following behind me.“Really?” I paused, turning around to face her with a surprised look. “I guess the day is shorter than I think. Anyway, I would love for you to make me pasta.” “Alright ma'am, I'll get to work immediately.” she said, turning to leave. However, she'd barely taken a step from where she stood when I called back her attention.“One more thing,” I said, indicating with a raised finger. “Do not make it soggy. Understood?” “
Rayna's POV.Returning to the sitting room, I realized that I'd spent over thirty minutes talking to Maggie as I lifted my gaze to the wall clock by the side. I knew what that meant; my favorite TV show would have come to an end or might be about to. But, I'd to do what needed to be done. No one should be that careless. And to think that I'd barely stayed in my own house for two good hours and there was already a threat of burning it to the ground even made me more angry.Nonetheless, I ambled towards the sitting room with hopes that I would be lucky enough to see the show even if it was for a minute or two since I missed the last one due to a busy schedule. However, I also knew that the chances of getting a minute or two out of the show was as slim as the strand of hair caressing my forehead. Arriving at the sitting room, I settled on the couch and just as I thought, the show was over. On display on the TV screen were the cast and characters. “Not again.” I muttered the words under
Rayna's POV.Tapping a foot as if counting down like a time bomb about to go off soon, I glanced at the wall clock. However, after what seemed like waiting for a lifetime, Maggie finally showed up in the dining with a food tray in her grip. “Do you realize that this is your first day on the job?” I asked, with a furrowed brow. “What took you so long?” “I am so sorry ma'am, but I had to begin the process again just like you asked me to.” she said, transferring the meal from the tray to the table. “And I do realize that it's my first day, but…” “You will do better, right?” I asked, cutting her off. “I have heard that over a million and one time already today so, it's not difficult to know that it would be your next words.” “I am so sorry ma'am.” she said, taking a step backward with head bowed and hands clasped in front of her. “Well, sorry won't make those improvements for you.” I said, bringing the meal closer to myself as I took off the lid used to cover it. “So, you'd better st
Rayna's POV.For a moment, I feel silent, rooted to the spot as I tried to wrap my head around Maggie's words. It felt as if my heart had literally stopped beating. Tilting my head to both sides as if trying to weigh my options, while actually trying to understand how she could have made such a mistake, I narrowed my gaze.“I don't think I understand what you just said, can you explain better please?” I asked, as a look of confusion masked my face. “What do you mean by you used the wrong ingredient?” “I should have been more careful ma'am, but I was carried away.” she said, her eyes suddenly moist with tears. “As I returned to the kitchen to do the dishes, I realized that I'd used the wrong ingredient.” “You were carried away?” I asked, letting out a laughing scoff. “Then why are you still here? If you were carried away, why are you still here or did what carry you suddenly return you?” “I am so sorry ma'am.” she said, with an apologetic look in her eyes. “Don't tell me that!” I s
Rayna's POV.“Are you sure you'll be able to attend the board meeting?” Sera asked, her voice laced with concern as she stood by the side watching me dress my hair into a low bun. “It doesn't take anything, I could cancel it. All you've to do is say the words.” “There will be no need for that, Sera. Not to worry, a little stomach ache won't kill me. At least, not yet.” I said, turning to face her with a smile. “Besides, this meeting is long overdue, and I don't want to keep pushing it further anymore. Also, Sebastian has been a thorn in my flesh lately; I need to put him in his place. And, I have to do it today.” “Alright. However, you'll still need to visit the hospital after you're done with the meeting, ma'am.” she said, handing me my satchel bag. “We don't have to overlook the situation. Prevention is better than cure.” “I know, dear.” I said, receiving the bag from her. “If it wasn't an important meeting, then I would have gone straight to the hospital. However, like I said, I

Chapter one Rayna"You're not going to school today until you're done cleaning!" My mother roared at me. I turned, startled, "I'm done with my chores, ma." Her only response was a resounding slap that has my neck snapping to the side. I cup my flaming cheeks. "You useless girl," she snarled, advancing at me, "How dare you talk back to me? It seems you're beginning to get too audacious." I staggered away from the wrath blazing in her eyes. "What's going on up there, darling?" Uncle Timothy's voice barked from below. I glanced over my shoulder to see my silver haired uncle standing in the middle the living room and glaring up at me. "She refused to do the cleaning," mother smirked at me. "Th-that's not true," I rushed to say, "I've cleaned the house already." "What about the garage at the back? Did you clean it?" She raised one brow at me. I gaped at her. Since when did cleaning the garage become one of my duties too? As if it wasn't enough that I had to clean this endless m

Turning around, I found her standing at the door. I don't know why she chose to remain there. Even after asking her to come in, she chose to remain outside. It wasn't as if she was a vampire waiting to be invited in. However, even if she was, then I'd invited her in already, so why was she still standing outside there glancing at the door frame like she'd seen it somewhere?“I am sorry, but I think I've made the wrong stop.” she said, looking more confused than her words sounded. “I don't think this is the place where I'm needed to work as a chef.” Meanwhile, as she was speaking, she made it so obvious that she was trying to evade my gaze. She couldn't even afford to make the slightest eye contact with me, but I knew why. I
