Rayna's POV.

“What are you waiting for?” I asked, walking back to the door as Maggie kept sweeping her gaze all over the door frame. “Aren't you going to come in?”

I'd almost gotten to the sitting room when I realized that I couldn't hear any footsteps behind me. Turning around, I found her standing at the door. I don't know why she chose to remain there. Even after asking her to come in, she chose to remain outside. It wasn't as if she was a vampire waiting to be invited in. However, even if she was, then I'd invited her in already, so why was she still standing outside there glancing at the door frame like she'd seen it somewhere?

“I am sorry, but I think I've made the wrong stop.” she said, looking more confused than her words sounded. “I don't think this is the place where I'm needed to work as a chef.”

Meanwhile, as she was speaking, she made it so obvious that she was trying to evade my gaze. She couldn't even afford to make the slightest eye contact with me, but I knew why. I knew exactly how she must have felt when she saw me. She must have felt like jumping out of her own skin. But that was just the least of what she would feel in weeks to come. The look in her eyes when she first saw me meant that she was familiar with my face. However, she wasn't just sure if I was the one. Well, I don't think doppelgänger exists.

“I don't understand, what are you talking about?” I asked, crinkling my face in confusion. “How do you mean this isn't the place you've been asked to come? What address were you given?”

“Just a moment, please.” she said, trying to confirm the place of address on her cellphone. “Alright, it's 223 East 34 Oasis Street, apartment 3B.”

“Well, there it is.” I said, pointing a finger to the side as I showed her where it was written on the wall. “Do you see that? So, I don't think you're at the wrong place. However, if you still doubt, then let me ask, who contacted you?”

“A lady named Sera.” she said, tilting her head to both sides as she struggled to recollect the name. “Yes, that is her name.”

“Good, and who did she tell you that you're coming to work for?” I asked, narrowing my gaze at the words as if expecting her to say my name.

“She said that I'm coming to work for Aya Jacobs.” she said, evading my gaze.

“And that would be me.” I said, flashing a smile across her worried face. “So, I don't think you've missed your way. Again, you can come in.”

This time, to ensure that she doesn't stay behind while I go in thinking that she would be right behind me, I stepped aside for her to go in. Well, she must have been wondering why her boss is unusually nice. However, if I'm to repay her for what she did to me, then I don't need her to suspect a thing.

To say it better, I need her to feel at home. Without a choice, she took a step in and then another, and then she continued that way until she arrived at the sitting room. Meanwhile, after shutting the door, I followed behind her. But, as I got to the sitting room, I found her standing with both hands clasped in front of her as if waiting for me to tell her what to do next.

“You can have a seat.” I said, doing the same myself. “Or are you planning to stand?”

Before sitting, she tilted her head and glanced at the couch as if trying to be sure that there was nothing on it that would be a problem in the long run. However, even after confirming for herself that there was nothing on it, she half-sat on the couch.

“Is there something wrong with the couch?” I asked, my voice laced with concern. “Or are you comfortable sitting like that?”

Although, I don't expect anything to be wrong with the furniture which was just moved in some hours ago. But, I had to ask. We can't be so sure. It could be that she hadn't had the opportunity to sit on something as beautiful and comfortable as that before now.

“There is nothing wrong ma'am.” she said, forcing a smile through her lips. “I am comfortable this way.”

Well, she could say whatever she wanted, it was her mouth. However, we both knew that that wasn't the case. If anything, she still hadn't gotten over the shock that I would be her boss. But, she really didn't have to make it so obvious. If I hadn't encountered her before now, her movements would make me realize that something was wrong.

“So, would you care for anything to drink?” I asked, with a shrug of my shoulder. “I have red—”

“There won't be any need for that ma'am.” she said, drawing her mouth into a straight line and biting her lips.

“Are you sure you're alright?” I asked, shooting suspicious glances at her. “Or are you feeling unwell? If that's the case—”

“No, ma'am. I'm perfectly fine.” she said, the words jolting out of her lips as if they were red-hot coals in her mouth. “I am not feeling unwell.”

“Alright, perhaps it's the air conditioner that's making you feel this way. Hold on a minute.” I said, righting myself from the couch.

However, I'd barely taken a step from where I was standing when she suddenly got on her feet like a spring after contraction. In response to that, I flinched jerking my head back.

“That won't be necessary ma'am.” she said, shaking her head. “The air conditioner has nothing to do with the way I feel.”

“I actually think it does.” I said, the words seemed to drag themselves from my throat.

As I attempted to take a step forward, she did the same as if trying to block my path.

“No, ma'am. It doesn't.” she said, letting out a shaky breath.

“Are you sure?” I asked, my voice laced with concern. “If it isn't the air conditioner, then what exactly is wrong with you?”

Rayna's POV.If she really thought that I would turn off the air conditioner because of her then she'd gotten it all wrong. All that drama back there? Come on, it was just a facade. I could only imagine how much her conscience would have pricked her. Well, that was if she had any. I wouldn't have gone through all that stress and then return to put off the air conditioner just to make my cook feel at home. It doesn't work that way. In the meantime, I pulled the fridge open, took out a chilled bottled water and a water glass. All that talk back there had suddenly made me thirsty. Closing the fridge, I returned to the sitting room. As I settled on the couch, I poured myself a glass of water. While I was at it, I could feel her gaze boring into my skin. Well, that was the only thing she could do; she couldn't dare meet my gaze. Nonetheless, I allowed her have the moment to herself. That is, if it would allow her breath. Anyway, I would love for you to make me pasta.” “Alright ma'am, I'll get to work immediately.” she said, turning to leave. However, she'd barely taken a step from where she stood when I called back her attention.“One more thing,” I said, indicating with a raised finger. “Do not make it soggy. Rayna's POV.Returning to the sitting room, I realized that I'd spent over thirty minutes talking to Maggie as I lifted my gaze to the wall clock by the side. I knew what that meant; my favorite TV show would have come to an end or might be about to. But, I'd to do what needed to be done. No one should be that careless. And to think that I'd barely stayed in my own house for two good hours and there was already a threat of burning it to the ground even made me more angry.Nonetheless, I ambled towards the sitting room with hopes that I would be lucky enough to see the show even if it was for a minute or two since I missed the last one due to a busy schedule. However, I also knew that the chances of getting a minute or two out of the show was as slim as the strand of hair caressing my forehead. Arriving at the sitting room, I settled on the couch and just as I thought, the show was over. On display on the TV screen were the cast and characters. “Not again.” I muttered the words under

However, after what seemed like waiting for a lifetime, Maggie finally showed up in the dining with a food tray in her grip. “Do you realize that this is your first day on the job?” I asked, with a furrowed brow. “What took you so long?” “I am so sorry ma'am, but I had to begin the process again just like you asked me to.” she said, transferring the meal from the tray to the table. “And I do realize that it's my first day, but…” “You will do better, right?” I asked, cutting her off. “I have heard that over a million and one time already today so, it's not difficult to know that it would be your next words.” “I am so sorry ma'am.” she said, taking a step backward with head bowed and hands clasped in front of her. “Well, sorry won't make those improvements for you.” I said, bringing the meal closer to myself as I took off the lid used to cover it. “So, you'd better st

All you've to do is say the words.” “There will be no need for that, Sera. Not to worry, a little stomach ache won't kill me. At least, not yet.” I said, turning to face her with a smile. “Besides, this meeting is long overdue, and I don't want to keep pushing it further anymore. Also, Sebastian has been a thorn in my flesh lately; I need to put him in his place. And, I have to do it today.” “Alright. Chapter one Rayna"You're not going to school today until you're done cleaning!" My mother roared at me. I turned, startled, "I'm done with my chores, ma." Her only response was a resounding slap that has my neck snapping to the side. I cup my flaming cheeks. "You useless girl," she snarled, advancing at me, "How dare you talk back to me? It seems you're beginning to get too audacious." I staggered away from the wrath blazing in her eyes. "What's going on up there, darling?" Uncle Timothy's voice barked from below. I glanced over my shoulder to see my silver haired uncle standing in the middle the living room and glaring up at me. "She refused to do the cleaning," mother smirked at me. "Th-that's not true," I rushed to say, "I've cleaned the house already." "What about the garage at the back? Did you clean it?" She raised one brow at me. I gaped at her. Since when did cleaning the garage become one of my duties too? As if it wasn't enough that I had to clean this endless m

Chapter twoRayna"what's that pathetic orphan doing here?" I heard someone sneer. "Ewww, what is she wearing?" "They shouldn't keep on letting her in here." "Can't she make an effort to wash her uniform?" "Wash? Ugh, she needs to throw those rags away and buy new ones. She looks like something they dug up from the trash. Yuck." Keeping my head down, I ignored all their snide words as I walked past the rows of desks and settled in my lone desk at the very back of the class. " You're late!" Mr. Ivory barked at me, "If this continues to repeat itself, you'll have to face detention." My heart began to pound in my chest. Detention was the worst thing they could do to me because the one time I hadn't come home on time, my mother had locked me in my room with no food or water for three days. "I'm sorry, sir. It won't happen again." "I've heard that before," he rolled his eyes and turned back to the board, "Now, on the topic of differentiation_" I tried my best to listen but not on

Rayna's POV.For someone like Maggie, she didn't need any interview. All she needed was payback, and I would do so with every of her payslip. In the meantime, a look of shock seemed to mask Sera's face as she stared at me. She knew I wasn't the type who would hire someone without having an interview with them or better still, a physical meeting with them, so I could understand the shock on her face. However, there was no point trying to understand a decision which was birthed from an experience from years back. But then, I thought that was all. Expecting her to leave, instead she remained in front of me. “Is there something else?” I asked, with a tinge of curiosity in my voice. “Or do you have something to say.” “One more thing, ma'am.” she said, indicating with a raised finger. “You need someone who will clean the house, and I've got two options here.” “Good and fine.” I said, with a shrug of my shoulder. “There is no point going back and forth on this, the first one is hired.” “
