The Present Past

Rayna's POV.I'd barely dropped my gaze to the document which I'd to review after Laura exited my office when I heard a knock on the door. Earlier, I figured that she wanted to say something but then, it seemed like she forgot and perhaps, now she'd remember hence her return to my office. Although, there were still loads of documents for me to review but then, I knew that I'd to answer her before going on with any other thing.“You may come in, please.” I said, pushing the document to the side as I lifted my gaze to the door, awaiting her presence. However, as the doorknob was turned open from the other side and then pushed open, a rather familiar figure revealed himself as he took some steps into my office. As my gaze fell on him, I almost jumped out of my skin.“Hello,” he mouthed, lifting a hand and shaking his fingers as a cynical smile pushed his lips to the side. “Missed me?” Staring at him, I blinked my eyes rapidly in confusion. How was it possible that he was standing right

A Little More Time

Rayna's POV.Dropping my head, I pushed a hand in my hair. If my memory serves me right, he was supposed to remain there perhaps, for two more years so how in the world did he make it out before then? Well, it seems like your resolved past always has a way of returning somehow. Suddenly, the sound of the door creaking open cut through my thoughts like a whip. I lifted my head to see who it was and fortunately, it wasn't anyone from my past but Sera. Upon seeing her, I heaved a sigh of relief.“Is there something wrong, ma'am?” she asked, walking towards me with a look of curiosity in her gaze. “Or are you feeling strange?” “No, it's nothing like that.” I said, with a smile on my lips to keep her mind at ease. “Have a seat.” “Thank you ma'am.” she said, pulling the chair back before settling on it. “Just as you asked me, I have done some findings on The Hall.” “So, what did you get?” I asked, sliding my chair closer as I leaned forward. “Anything out of the ordinary?” “It turns out

The Wrong Choice

Rayna's POV.These days, for no reason in particular, I prefer taking the stairs to the elevator. There's just this unsettling feeling from deep down that repels me from taking the elevator. However, Sera is no stranger to it since she considers it safer and faster. In the meantime, there was an awkward silence between us as we awaited the elevator to bring us the first floor. “Ahem,” I cleared my throat, pressing a fist against my lips. “Do you have any siblings? Or family relatives who stay around?” “Why do you ask ma'am?” she asked, turning to face me. “Nothing really.” I said, with a shrug of my shoulder. “I am just curious. Besides, you haven't mentioned anything about it. If you have any, you haven't said a thing or two about any one of them. I don't want to believe they are that bad, or are they?”“Of course not ma'am.” she said, with a smile on her lips. “I have just been too busy with work lately that I hardly reach out to them. If anything, I have to keep my focus.” “I

A Dire Situation

Rayna's POV.Beads of sweat could be seen on my forehead as I pressed my back against the wall of the elevator and lifted my face heavenward. It's been over half an hour and there's been nothing. No way to reach the technical department or even any other person. However, by the minute, it seemed like the elevator was shrinking and trying to squeeze the life out of both of us when as a matter of fact, it was the air that was growing thinner.“Hey, are you alright?” I asked, my voice laced with concern as I glanced at Sera. She sat on the floor, pulling her knees close to her chest and wrapping her arm around them with closed eyes.“I don't think I am.” she said, opening her eyes. “I can barely breathe.” She wasn't the only one feeling that way, but it seemed like if nothing was done in the next few minutes, then she might actually pass out. On my end, I could still manage for a few more minutes but, I couldn't say the same for her. If anything, she needed to get some air else things m

First Things First

Rayna's POV.Although, I had it in mind to visit the hospital later in the day and surprisingly that was the more reason why Sera had to leave every other thing she was doing and instead return to me. However, it should have just been me coming to get examined by the doctor and not Sera. In the meantime, I stared at her as she slept on the hospital cot with a cannula passed into her vein which delivered the liquid from the sack hanging on a metal pole into her body.“She will be fine.” the female doctor said, with an assuring nod. “All she needs right now is a little rest. She was just frightened, that's all.” “Thank you so much.” I said, turning to face her with a meaningful look in my eyes and a smile on my lips. “It could have been worse than this.” “You are welcome. If you would like to watch over her, then you might as well get a seat.” she said, bringing my attention to the chair behind me. “Standing won't make the situation any better than it is. Instead, it will only wear y

Love for a mother

Rayna's POV.I figured that if Sera didn't have the time to see her family, then perhaps they could come to see her. Besides, they needed to be aware of what happened to her should in case things go south. In the meantime, I sat on a bench outside Sera's ward as I allowed her a few more minutes with her mother. Although, she'd no idea whatsoever that I was waiting outside for her, but I sensed that she would want to spend more time with her mother. Watching a good number of people pass by, I noticed a little boy standing at a corner with his head hung low. Although, I couldn't get a good look at his face, but I could tell from his drooping shoulders that he wasn't happy. However, before making any move towards him, I swept my eyes all over the place in search of his mom, guardian or whoever it was that he followed down here. But then, everyone seemed so busy to even notice that he was there. Slowly, I righted myself from the seat and then walked up to him.“Why are you standing here

A Heartbreaking Sight

Rayna's POV.Again, I figured it would be a good opportunity to get something to eat for myself and Sera since that was what we wanted to do before the elevator incident. With a takeout bag in my grip, I approached the bench which I asked the little boy to sit on and wait for me. However, I couldn't find him there anymore. I froze, rooted to the spot as my heart gave a nervous jolt. Where in the world could he have possibly gone to? Although, with kids you might not really tell, that much I knew. However, he assured me that he would remain put just until I returned. But now, he is nowhere to be found.Standing there, I swept my eyes all over the place, especially behind me to see if he was following me. Perhaps, he couldn't bear the weight of the hunger anymore and so, he'd gone to look for me because then again, I was taking quite a long time to return. But, there was no sign of him. Knowing that he could have in the name of trying to kill time lost his way by deciding to take a walk

Too Many Questions

Rayna's POV.As the words fell upon my ears, I felt a sudden coldness that hits at the core. How could a little boy his age be so smart that he could have figured out that it was his mom who had just been taken out of the operating room? For a moment, I lost balance and composure: I wasn't in possession of my body anymore. Perhaps, he figured it out and took advantage of that moment when my hand suddenly slipped off from his head. “Mommy!” he cried, going after the doctors who'd just taken his mom out of the operating room. As the hallway echoed with his voice, I flinched, returning to the moment. Looking down, I couldn't find him. My heart shook. Immediately, I turned around and found him running towards the operating room. Without hesitating, I went after him. And, after taking a few steps, I caught up with him. However, by then he'd already drawn the attention of quite a lot of people around. Holding him still as he cried profusely, I heard the sound of footsteps coming my way as

Nothing to worry about

Rayna's POV.If she had stormed out of her ward in search of me because she was hungry, although it would seem absurd but, I would be able to handle that. Or perhaps, if she'd requested a nurse to help her get something to eat in my name, then that works still. However, taking out the IV lines which were supposed to help her get better is a big no for me. I understand that she wants to return to work as soon as possible, but then, without a good health how does she expect to function well enough? If anything, she's been subjected to a lot of stress in the course of days graduating into weeks and likewise weeks into months, so if her body decides to breakdown then I won't be surprised. However, I'll only be surprised if she refuses to get treatment, which she's decided to do because her body deceives her into thinking that she's feeling good. And, perhaps there'll be no need for the treatment.“Do you realize what you're doing right now?” I asked, narrowing my gaze at the words. “You

Someday, Sometime

Rayna's POV.I actually thought a nurse was behind me when Sera said that, and perhaps I was blocking her path and so, she brought my attention to it so that I would step aside. However, turning back to face front, I felt a sudden coldness that hits at the core when I found Ethan standing by the door. For a brief moment, I exchange puzzled glances with her before returning my attention to him. If anything, I wasn't expecting to find him by the door, but outside on the bench just as I said to him. However, it seems like I took too long talking to her and he got worried. But then, I could only hope that he didn't hear much of our conversation. If possible, it would be nice if he didn't hear a thing.“Ethan, what are you doing here?” I asked, dropping the takeout bag on the hospital cot. “I thought I asked you to wait outside for me? What happened? What are you here?” “You were taking so long to come out again, so I got scared and decided to come check up on you.” he said, shooting his
