Ashley called the waiter to ask for the bill after Bella had finished her meal. Both of their faces were still glowing from the lively conversation they'd shared.
"Wait," Bella squealed, quickly taking out her wallet as she noticed Ashley slipping her card into the bill holder.
"No, no. Keep it. I'll take it. You're my guest here," Ashley said.
Bella's lips curled into a gentle smile as she tilted her head, "Thank you," replying with a cute, playful tone and facial expression.
Ashley couldn't help but laugh.
"This is the least I can do. I feel bad for not spending more time with you while you were here."
She let out a sigh, "I should have just gone out with you and Mike instead of handling all the wedding stuff that—" she sighed again as she realized she shouldn't say so many things that could cause prejudice.
Bella gave her a reassuring grin. "Hey, don't say that. You did us a favor by sending a tour guide. It was nice to walk around on our own like real tourists on vacation."
Ashley smiled, her heart a little lighter.
They left the restaurant after the waiter returned the card and handed over the receipt
As they stepped outside, Ashley hesitated to part ways, not wanting their meeting to end so soon.
"Do you want to come to the spa with me? We can talk for a bit more before you head back to Auckland."
"That sounds nice. Yeah, it would be great to spend some more time with you, but, I think I'll just go back to the hotel," Bella let out a small, tired sigh, "I need to get some sleep so I don't feel cranky like a zombie. Or I'll be a total nightmare and make Mike my punching bag. Okay?”
Ashley Ashley forced a smile, felt sad about Bella's rejection.
"Alright. Just make sure you’re well-rested before the long flight."
Bella hummed in agreement. "And you really don't have to drive us to the airport."
"Why?" Ashley's eyes widened, a mix of surprise and stubbornness, "Why not? Of course I have to come to see you off. I really don't know when I'll be able to see you guys again."
Bella waved her hand dismissively. "Just video call me. It’s not like we’re in the Stone Age. We’ll be okay. You just focus on being with your husband, alright? Newlyweds shouldn’t spend so much time apart."
Ashley huffed, annoyed, "I'm just going to the airport. You act like I'm planning to run away."
A fleeting thought then crossed her mind. 'If I could, I would have run away to the end of the world long ago.’
Unfortunately, she was bound by many things to her family. So she could only endure and obey the game of life controlled by others.
Bella laughed.
"Please, just listen to me for once. Let me be right. You don’t need to drive us. I promise I’ll text you as soon as I get home tomorrow. How’s that? Deal?"
A taxi pulled up beside them, and Bella quickly wrapped her arms around Ashley in a tight hug. "Take care of yourself, okay?"
Ashley nodded, forced to agree to her best friend's request. She hugged her again for one last time.
"You too. Get some rest and be careful," Ashley advised.
Bella nodded, smiling as the taxi door closed. She waved through the open window, and Ashley waved back.
After the taxi carrying Bella disappeared from sight, Ashley took a deep breath and stepped across to the building in front of the restaurant.
As soon as she arrived, she stepped forward. Pushing the door open to find herself greeted by a smiling receptionist.
"Good afternoon," the woman greeted, her voice pleasant and welcoming. "How can I help you today?"
Then she asked about the services Ashley wanted.
Ashley hesitated for a moment, gathering herself. "Do you have the most comprehensive selection of therapies?"
The employee smiled brightly. She nodded eagerly, "Of course. What would you like, ma'am? We have a lot to choose from," and handed Ashley a neatly bound menu of services.
Ashley took it and skimmed through the pages.
“I...” Ashley's mouth uttered something without her fully realizing it. Although it was more like murmuring to herself, the maid could still hear it clearly. “I feel like I got hit by an apocalypse yesterday."
While her eyes and focus were still tracing the various writings and images printed on the menu book, she continued her mumbling that kept coming out of nowhere. The words spilled out before she even realized it, a raw confession wrapped in tired humor. Driven out like lava begging to be released, she could no longer contain it.
“The great apocalypse.”
A long, soft, exhausted laugh followed, "Yes, a huge apocalypse. Until my body and mind were completely made into a mess, shattered. After the apocalypse crushed me, I was drowned in a flood. Not just any water, but muddy water full of rotten fish. Disgusting. Something like that."
Ashley paused and raised her head to look at the employee in front of her who was just quietly waiting for her while keeping a polite smile. She blinked and felt the need to correct her own words.
"Yeah… not that I'm that messed up and need to see a doctor or anything, no," she forced out a dry laugh again, "I just need something that can relax me. Something that can take away the pain in all my body—especially here," She raised a hand to touch the sides of her neck and shoulders in turn. Then pressing lightly as if to ease the tension.
"I also slept in the wrong position last night."
"Of course," the receptionist replied without missing a beat,” as if she understood perfectly and knew what her guest needed. She then pointed out several premium full-body treatments that include both relaxation and deep tissue massage, “Would that be suitable?"
"Do you have any recommendations? Can you choose the most complete one? Besides needing a massage, I really feel very dirty and need to clean my whole body."
"Of course, ma'am. Then we will prepare the best service for you. Please come with me."
The receptionist guided her into one of the serene, private rooms within the building, where Ashley hoped to find at least a sliver of peace.
"Mr. Kwak, if you see a pharmacy, please stop and get me some headache medicine," Jason said, taking a deep breath and letting it out. "I don't know why my head feels so heavy.""Yes, sir," the middle-aged driver replied, giving a quick nod, "I'll drive more slowly."That man with a well-defined oval face with sharp but refined features loosened his tie and unbuttoned the top button of his shirt. Then adjusted his sitting position so that he could lean his head against the seat, and closed his eyes. Hoping the tension would ease even a little. Not long after, the car came to a gentle stop."Sir, do you need anything else besides the medicine?"Jason slowly opened his eyes, blinking away the haze, "No. I don't need anything else. That's all."The driver nodded before stepping out of the car.Jason grabbed the water bottle next to him and took a long and refreshing sip.His schedule had been brutal over the past month. A lot of work piled up. And one engagement after another, each deman
"So, this is your house?"Josh gasped. He automatically jumped to his feet when he recognized the owner of the voice he knew so well was suddenly so close."Hyung—," Josh blinked tensely. And without him realizing it his eyes instinctively glanced to the spot where Sharon had just left.Of course, Jason caught that trembling glance. His eyes narrowed slightly. It felt so good, like he had caught a big fish. And Jason couldn’t help but feel a surge of satisfaction.Intending to play a little prank on his brother, Jason only gave a small nod, "Yeah?"Josh cleared his throat, his mind racing to come up with a reasonable excuse in this crucial moment. Until it unwittingly caused brief silence between them."I—had an important meeting... with a colleague here," he thinks he managed to give an answer. Followed by an awkward laugh that escaped her mouth immediately afterward. His demeanor was stiff, and his hands were clasped together—demonstrating a very bad lie."Oh, I see. But why lie at
That day, Josh willingly complied with Sharon's every whim—going shopping, buying all kinds of overpriced treats, and patiently waiting while she indulged in endless beauty treatments. But since he had been deprived of rest and sleep for the past few days—he had to be involved in family gatherings before the wedding, drowning in work with a project deadline just three days before the wedding day, and especially the hardest part, was dealing with Sharon's relentless tantrums... the impact on his body was real. It was like he had been beaten and crushed to the bone.He spent the entire day walking from store to store, sitting for long periods, then standing again—so many times that his legs nearly gave out from sheer exhaustion. Drowsiness clung to him like a heavy fog, so difficult to endure. His life felt disconnected from his own body. Every step he took was numb. Every movement happened without thought—like he was automatically going through the motions, like he was on autopilot.Me
When Josh stepped into the house, the first thing he saw was his mother, seated stiffly on one of the sofas in the living room. She was facing the entrance—the door that separated the foyer from the rest of the house—as if she had been waiting for him all this time, ensuring he would catch her expression the moment he walked in. Sour and tense.Josh’s steps faltered. He still couldn't guess what he was about to face at that moment. As far as he knew, there was nothing wrong within the family. He also felt that he hadn't done anything wrong lately, especially to his mother. In fact, compared to his older siblings, he was the most obedient, the most reliable.Yet his mother’s piercing gaze cut through him. Her eyes unblinked. With her arms crossed in front of her chest, she watched Josh approach her in silence, without saying a word.Josh swallowed hard. The air in the room was thick with something unsettling, something oppressive. It was eerie and cold, despite the lights still burning
If his mother was asked a question like this... The biggest possibility was that she had already found out. Although Josh himself didn’t know how.Maybe someone had seen him with Sharon as they spent the day outside together. Maybe it was his own mother who saw them—no, his mother would've immediately confronted them both—especially Sharon—not called him alone at this time of night. Or maybe Jason had seen him with Sharon at the restaurant this afternoon? Although he was sure Jason hadn't seen Sharon at the restaurant, there was still a slight possibility.Or—Could Ashley have complained to his mom?His mom didn’t just ask about today. But she mentioned last night. If it was really Jason or someone who knew him, they wouldn't know that he stayed at Sharon's apartment last night. Was this all Ashley's doing?Clearly, right now he had to answer very carefully. The probability for him was fifty percent for an answer. One to tell a lie, and one to tell a little lie.Because as bad as it
Josh was frantic. He couldn't answer anything. His voice suddenly disappeared as if swallowed by a complicated life dilemma. It was as if his entire body was swallowed by quicksand with thousands of leeches eating away at his body. His current situation was really difficult. Being forced to choose between the interests of his family and his feelings for Sharon, was like telling him to commit suicide. There was nothing he could choose. There was nothing he could prioritize over the others. Everything was important to him. That's why he kept in touch with Sharon despite agreeing to break up with her. He had done everything he could. He was even willing to spend a lot of time making plans and being more careful so as not to get caught by anyone. But Min Jinah was really a surprise. He hadn’t thought of her at all, as his mother had never mentioned her. He believed it was all over since the incident from years ago had been resolved and faded over time.He suddenly felt incredibly naive
"Then how about last night. You haven't answered where you were last night?"Josh again swallowed his saliva with difficulty.“At home,” he replied softly. “Of course I was home with Ashley.”His mother glanced at him without interest. Even though she didn't actually know whether her son was lying or not—she herself had asked this one question only because Min Jinah was babbling incoherently about how she wasn't sure if she'd seen Josh or someone who looked like Josh going out late at night from his apartment on the wedding night."I hope you're not lying. I heard something uncomfortable, but I don't know if it's true or not... But leaving a woman alone on the wedding night—that would hurt her a lot. You have to understand that."Josh's jaw hardened.Remembering that he not only left Ashley last night, but also fought and was rude to her, made his guilt tingle again."I also want you to keep your other promises. We can't wait too long,“ her mother thought again, ”should I legalize our
"Yes. Interesting, isn't it?"“That brother of yours seems really stupid, huh.”"He's just blind. That girl is very good at clouding his common sense. Sometimes I wonder what it is about that girl that makes Josh cling so tightly, as if he’s incapable of letting go—as if her presence is inescapable. Like it's impossible to let go of the shadow," Jason paused."That girl is like a leech, Mr. Lim. That's why your brother has a hard time letting go of her. Just like a person with a severe addiction, for him she acts as both a parasite and a source of opium."Jason was quite impressed by the former journalist's reasoning and judgment. He couldn't disagree against it—because what she said was so true. Her words were disturbingly accurate."You sound like an expert. No wonder you used to be such a great journalist.”“Used to be? What about now?” Jinah’s voice held a tinge of irritation."Of course you've become more skillful and professional. If you weren’t reliable, I wouldn't have reached
Ashley could immediately grasp the meaning of Josh's words just now."Why are you saying that? As if you care about my status? Even if I end up becoming a widow, that's my problem, not yours."Although Ashley knew all of Josh's long words were not completely wrong, she felt that she couldn't admit it too quickly. Her ego was currently provoked too much to be assuaged in the blink of an eye.It was true that when the idea of divorce came into her head, she was completely blinded by the anger and disappointment that attacked her in one day. It seemed natural that she would lose her mind at that time. Then when her mouth proposed an agreement, it was solely because her pride was being trampled on by Josh and his uncivilized girlfriend. So she instinctively searched for a solution to regain her strength and a way to keep her from getting even worse—and to benefit herself. And somehow divorce was the only thing that came to mind. But this proved that Josh's words were not wrong. Ashley di
Josh looked at Ashley with mixed feelings. He just realized that what he did had a serious impact on other people besides himself and Sharon. All this time, so far, he only thought that he and Sharon were the only ones suffering from being in a difficult situation that was very unfair. But as it turned out, all these things also triggered Ashley's guilt. And what Ashley said was true. The complicated relationship that suddenly had to be established between the two of them did leave a big hole in Josh's heart. He was only good at covering it up by pretending to look fine when agreeing to their marriage. Then when his relationship with Sharon came to light, the uncomfortable feeling was certainly heightened by the outburst of various other types of emotions."No, you're not. You're not an intruder. It's better not to think that way. There's no point in feeling guilty. It's all too complicated."Josh's mission was to make up with Ashley. So right now, he tried to encourage her in any way
PRESENTJosh still vividly remembers filling his days with schemes of the best he could do after the news of the arranged marriage. Her mother knew, her father also, her two older siblings probably understood him even better—that he was actually very resistant to the sudden marriage. Even if he finally agreed, they knew that he was only doing it for Sharon's sake. Because by agreeing to all the plans made and all the conditions put forward by his parents, Sharon's life would be saved. So, with a huge bravery, he was desperate to create a secret scenario behind his forced consent. He really couldn't turn away and let his family hurt the girl just like that. To him, Sharon was his responsibility that he could never let go of. There were many things he had to make sure went on as it should, just as it was, without changing a bit even if he had to pay very dearly—marrying another girl.Just imagining how to explain all that to Sharon didn't sit well with him.Even to this day, after all
But Josh still didn't move. His eyes did seem to follow the direction where his father pointed to a folder with his chin. But as soon as he dropped his gaze on the inanimate object, his imagination and hopes about the future of his life with Sharon died. The sound of his father's cell phone broke the short silence between them. After checking the identity of the caller, his father's finger slid over the button and answered briefly. A “Hello” was followed by a few “Hm-hm” and finished with “Yeah, I'll be right there.”Josh watched his father's movements from the tail of his eyes in silence. With his mouth tightly shut and head still bowed, he stared at the folder that held the record of how his life story would end.The man who had almost the same facial lines as Josh glanced at the woman beside him for a signal. The woman, Josh's mother, nodded while flashing a faint smile.“Don't try to make trouble, or even spoil it,” the old man stood up as he straightened his suit, "We've already
After carefully watching Ashley's gestures, facial expressions, and the look in her eyes, Josh was finally able to translate what she meant. His mouth then automatically formed the letter ‘Aah’ as a response that he understood. Then, Josh tried to hold back and postpone everything he had planned before—looking for Ashley because he wanted to continue their conversation yesterday. Although it couldn't be denied that the intense turmoil in his head, in his chest, at the base of his tongue—all of them—wanted to be spewed out and resolved as soon as possible, just to alleviate the suffocating pressure caused by the pile of problems with the other party. Which had not been resolved at all, but rather grew, and grew. But no matter what, he still has to be able to control himself. In order not to be caught off guard by something that could harm him as it has in the past. He, also, had to be calm. That way, he would be able to see the big picture of the position at least, after the unknown wo
Josh woke up in a much better condition than before. As his consciousness rose to the surface, and his eyes peered open, he could feel the fatigue that had previously settled over his body had now vanished. Perhaps not entirely, but it was enough to make him feel lighter and more comfortable. He turned her head to the side—just because before going to bed he remembered Ashley was there—and found emptiness. The lighting in the room was also still the same as last night, the curtains were still closed, and it was so quiet. It certainly piqued her curiosity, about how long he had fallen into a deep sleep and what time it was.Slowly, he got up from the bed and sat himself on the edge. Then he swept his gaze across the room as he recalled where he had last placed his cell phone. After a few careful head turns, his eyes found the phone lying on the coffee table by the window.Josh then stood up and walked towards the location of his cell phone. Intending to check the time and if there were
There was no need to think too hard right now, because no matter how hard he tried, his thoughts kept spinning in the same endless vortex. There was no light at the end of the tunnel. Nor did there seem to be any easy way out. Everything was dark—as if he were trapped alone in a labyrinthine abyss, with no light, no clues, no hope of escape. The more he sped up his running, the more he amplified his screams, or the more desperate he was to find the exit... all he found was the deeper he got lost.Maybe he didn't need to solve everything right now. Maybe, tomorrow, he would find a miracle—something that he hadn't thought of yet.Josh decided to clean himself up after sitting there for a while.Still only half-aware of his actions, he wandered toward the master bedroom. It was pure instinct—a reflex from his body seeking the most natural place to rest. Even after Josh realized he was standing in front of the door, he didn't immediately turn around or back away. He didn’t panic. He just
Tonight Josh was forced to return to his own home. After his very intense conversation with his mother, it was clear that he didn't dare to go straight back to Sharon's apartment. In fact, he was unsure whether he should be determined to stay away from Sharon for a while, or whether he should be stubborn enough to meet her secretly as usual. Which of course came with consequences that were far worse than before. If he took the first option, compromised with Sharon and kept their distance—even though the girl would explode in anger and refuse to part with him without listening to any reason, as he had tried in the past—maybe he would be able to delay a little time to find a way to get back together with Sharon without having to worry about any sanctions. But if he took the second option, by continuing to prioritize Sharon and breaking his own promise—which he had even said with a face full of guilt less than an hour ago—then, he really had to be ready to accept a punishment that would
