Tonight Josh was forced to return to his own home. After his very intense conversation with his mother, it was clear that he didn't dare to go straight back to Sharon's apartment.
In fact, he was unsure whether he should be determined to stay away from Sharon for a while, or whether he should be stubborn enough to meet her secretly as usual. Which of course came with consequences that were far worse than before.
If he took the first option, compromised with Sharon and kept their distance—even though the girl would explode in anger and refuse to part with him without listening to any reason, as he had tried in the past—maybe he would be able to delay a little time to find a way to get back together with Sharon without having to worry about any sanctions.
But if he took the second option, by continuing to prioritize Sharon and breaking his own promise—which he had even said with a face full of guilt less than an hour ago—then, he really had to be ready to accept a punishment that would probably be even more unimaginable than the one that had been legally written between him and his mother.
Because he himself could actually imagine how furious and disappointed his mother would be if she found him breaking the agreement and lying to her for the umpteenth time.
His fear was not of what horrors he would face. But what crazy things his mother would do to Sharon. Because his mother knew that the girl was his weakness. His mother knew very well that the girl was the reason why Josh was brave enough to sacrifice so many things without thinking twice. And, it seemed, his mother also knew for sure, if he would not be afraid to pluck the moon even for the sake of Sharon.
But this time, Josh felt that he was really standing on a vine full of sharp thorns. He didn't know what would happen to his foothold if he took a hasty step or misplaced. He would either lose his balance and fall, or the vine would snap and send him tumbling, or... his foot would step on a thorn and knock him over. In short, whatever he did, would only potentially give him the same worst possible outcome.
What makes everything different is only how he chooses what kind of cause will bring him down. In whose hands he would pick up his suffering—his own mother, or the girl he loved.
As he stared pensively in his car at Sharon's contact number, the vortex of chaos swirled around in his head intensely and deeply. It almost made his head feel violently compressed and erupted in sharp, agonizing pain.
Until that moment, there were no messages or even calls from his girlfriend. Perhaps the girl understood well enough that if he was talking to his mother, it meant he needed some time off. So the girl knew not to disturb him. Though perhaps, right now, Sharon was desperate for him to come back to her apartment.
But if tonight Josh put all his common sense aside and indulged his own ego for Sharon's sake, he would be on a suicide mission.
He couldn't just break a promise when he had just said it solemnly—like a sinner promising to repent.
Finally, with a heavy heart, he decided not to contact Sharon at all until tomorrow.
He considered that if he sent a message saying he couldn't go back to her place tonight, it would only lead to violent arguments that would make his heart waver again and immediately return to Sharon’s arms.
Whereas, if he didn't send any news, he was sure that it would imply to Sharon indirectly that he was having a hard time at his mother's house and it was natural not to give any news or even not to come back to her place at all.
So tonight, Josh drove his car to his new apartment—where Ashley was there.
His legs felt heavy as he arrived and stepped inside. It was as if there were so many invisible burdens that he was now forced to bear alone.
He walked as he swept her gaze across the rooms he passed with an extremely tired look.
He found no sign of Ashley's presence there. All that greeted him was only quiet and stillness.
Then when he sat down in the living room, Josh dropped his gaze to his own blurry reflection on the dead television screen.
Josh's eyes may still be glued to the same object, but his mind is drifting and jumping to the various moments that have frustrated him the most over the past two days—consecutively.
The reflection started from Josh feeling sorry for himself, to sorting and finding fault with what had escaped his control to cause all this to happen. Which not only ignited one problem, but also spread and attracted other misfortunes to follow—like a butterfly effect.
Maybe, just maybe, if Ashley hadn't caught him with Sharon yesterday afternoon, maybe they wouldn't have fought so much and their relationship wouldn't be in such limbo. Because after all, Josh still needs a good bond and Ashley's full trust in him. Meanwhile, when things have already become like this, the mission assigned by his mother becomes completely impossible for him to do.
And Sharon, the only girl he loves, doesn't need to feel even more miserable because she has to meet Ashley in person. The meeting of the two girls should never have happened in the first place—as he wanted, as he planned. Because it would have a very unpleasant effect on both of them—especially Sharon, in his opinion.
He also didn't need to go to the trouble of calming the two girls down. To be honest, if Ashley didn't know about his relationship with Sharon, the three of them would still be in a conducive situation. He wouldn't have had to accept Ashley's resentment, and wouldn't have had to go to the trouble of taking care of Sharon to this extent.
He and Sharon should still keep in touch in strict confidence as they had managed to do over the past few months. Sharon would also not demand so many things that could jeopardize both of their positions—exposing their togetherness in public, for example, as they had just done today.
That way, he wouldn't have to go through another set of difficulties that were far more dire—caught in Min Jinnah's trap.
But who should he blame?
Ashley probably just accidentally saw him in the corner of the lobby with Sharon. And it was natural for Sharon to demand the sincerity of his feelings for her after the trigger she got.
Perhaps in the end, he himself was to blame.
He should have been more careful in his actions. Confirming repeatedly the surroundings carefully, and not taking a careless step like he had done this time.
But everything had already happened. There was no turning back time. There was also no porridge that could be turned into rice.
All he needed to do was calm himself down so that he could reorganize his plan. Cool his head. Then unravel all the deadlocks that were crowding in there. Because the contents of his head right now were really much worse than the thousands of threads that were tangled together.
There was no need to think too hard right now, because no matter how hard he tried, his thoughts kept spinning in the same endless vortex. There was no light at the end of the tunnel. Nor did there seem to be any easy way out. Everything was dark—as if he were trapped alone in a labyrinthine abyss, with no light, no clues, no hope of escape. The more he sped up his running, the more he amplified his screams, or the more desperate he was to find the exit... all he found was the deeper he got lost.Maybe he didn't need to solve everything right now. Maybe, tomorrow, he would find a miracle—something that he hadn't thought of yet.Josh decided to clean himself up after sitting there for a while.Still only half-aware of his actions, he wandered toward the master bedroom. It was pure instinct—a reflex from his body seeking the most natural place to rest. Even after Josh realized he was standing in front of the door, he didn't immediately turn around or back away. He didn’t panic. He just
Josh woke up in a much better condition than before. As his consciousness rose to the surface, and his eyes peered open, he could feel the fatigue that had previously settled over his body had now vanished. Perhaps not entirely, but it was enough to make him feel lighter and more comfortable. He turned her head to the side—just because before going to bed he remembered Ashley was there—and found emptiness. The lighting in the room was also still the same as last night, the curtains were still closed, and it was so quiet. It certainly piqued her curiosity, about how long he had fallen into a deep sleep and what time it was.Slowly, he got up from the bed and sat himself on the edge. Then he swept his gaze across the room as he recalled where he had last placed his cell phone. After a few careful head turns, his eyes found the phone lying on the coffee table by the window.Josh then stood up and walked towards the location of his cell phone. Intending to check the time and if there were
After carefully watching Ashley's gestures, facial expressions, and the look in her eyes, Josh was finally able to translate what she meant. His mouth then automatically formed the letter ‘Aah’ as a response that he understood. Then, Josh tried to hold back and postpone everything he had planned before—looking for Ashley because he wanted to continue their conversation yesterday. Although it couldn't be denied that the intense turmoil in his head, in his chest, at the base of his tongue—all of them—wanted to be spewed out and resolved as soon as possible, just to alleviate the suffocating pressure caused by the pile of problems with the other party. Which had not been resolved at all, but rather grew, and grew. But no matter what, he still has to be able to control himself. In order not to be caught off guard by something that could harm him as it has in the past. He, also, had to be calm. That way, he would be able to see the big picture of the position at least, after the unknown wo
But Josh still didn't move. His eyes did seem to follow the direction where his father pointed to a folder with his chin. But as soon as he dropped his gaze on the inanimate object, his imagination and hopes about the future of his life with Sharon died. The sound of his father's cell phone broke the short silence between them. After checking the identity of the caller, his father's finger slid over the button and answered briefly. A “Hello” was followed by a few “Hm-hm” and finished with “Yeah, I'll be right there.”Josh watched his father's movements from the tail of his eyes in silence. With his mouth tightly shut and head still bowed, he stared at the folder that held the record of how his life story would end.The man who had almost the same facial lines as Josh glanced at the woman beside him for a signal. The woman, Josh's mother, nodded while flashing a faint smile.“Don't try to make trouble, or even spoil it,” the old man stood up as he straightened his suit, "We've already
PRESENTJosh still vividly remembers filling his days with schemes of the best he could do after the news of the arranged marriage. Her mother knew, her father also, her two older siblings probably understood him even better—that he was actually very resistant to the sudden marriage. Even if he finally agreed, they knew that he was only doing it for Sharon's sake. Because by agreeing to all the plans made and all the conditions put forward by his parents, Sharon's life would be saved. So, with a huge bravery, he was desperate to create a secret scenario behind his forced consent. He really couldn't turn away and let his family hurt the girl just like that. To him, Sharon was his responsibility that he could never let go of. There were many things he had to make sure went on as it should, just as it was, without changing a bit even if he had to pay very dearly—marrying another girl.Just imagining how to explain all that to Sharon didn't sit well with him.Even to this day, after all
Josh looked at Ashley with mixed feelings. He just realized that what he did had a serious impact on other people besides himself and Sharon. All this time, so far, he only thought that he and Sharon were the only ones suffering from being in a difficult situation that was very unfair. But as it turned out, all these things also triggered Ashley's guilt. And what Ashley said was true. The complicated relationship that suddenly had to be established between the two of them did leave a big hole in Josh's heart. He was only good at covering it up by pretending to look fine when agreeing to their marriage. Then when his relationship with Sharon came to light, the uncomfortable feeling was certainly heightened by the outburst of various other types of emotions."No, you're not. You're not an intruder. It's better not to think that way. There's no point in feeling guilty. It's all too complicated."Josh's mission was to make up with Ashley. So right now, he tried to encourage her in any way
Ashley could immediately grasp the meaning of Josh's words just now."Why are you saying that? As if you care about my status? Even if I end up becoming a widow, that's my problem, not yours."Although Ashley knew all of Josh's long words were not completely wrong, she felt that she couldn't admit it too quickly. Her ego was currently provoked too much to be assuaged in the blink of an eye.It was true that when the idea of divorce came into her head, she was completely blinded by the anger and disappointment that attacked her in one day. It seemed natural that she would lose her mind at that time. Then when her mouth proposed an agreement, it was solely because her pride was being trampled on by Josh and his uncivilized girlfriend. So she instinctively searched for a solution to regain her strength and a way to keep her from getting even worse—and to benefit herself. And somehow divorce was the only thing that came to mind. But this proved that Josh's words were not wrong. Ashley di
Ashley walked out of their apartment building. Down the long street and the large park in front of her, then out through the main gate. With hurried steps—without her realizing it—her feet kept moving further and further away from the apartment neighborhood. The only thing that occupied her mind right now, other than getting away from Josh, was making her stomach full. That's why before she left the apartment without a word, all she did was grab her wallet. The disgust caused by Josh's long words made her immediately finish her lunch without wanting to linger there. Even though she had only eaten a few bites of the dish. But being at the same table with that man, while listening to his words, really made her very tired. It was as if the intentions of the two of them who wanted to try to find a way out and come to an agreement that was in line, could never happen—no matter how many talks were held or how long they looked for it.As she consciously put away her unfinished bowl of rice a
Josh pushed his suitcase and Ashley's suitcase while she was already inside the house.Ashley had been very cold to him since their last day in Paris.Although every time he asked her what made her behave that way, she always replied with the same lines “I'm fine”, “I'm just tired”, “I'm not angry with you”, “I'm just the way I am”, “I'm not really angry, why would I be angry, I have no right to be angry”, “I'm just being normal”, “We agreed not to bother each other, so I'm more comfortable with us keeping our distance”.All the girl's words boiled down to one conclusion: she was indeed angry with Josh, she just didn't want to admit it.Whereas the previous few days they had enjoyed their days in Paris very much. There was even a moment when Josh felt that the two of them could be good friends. As the plane landed back in their hometown, Ashley could barely stop herself from screaming. Every second on the plane, he thought of only one thing: when he got home, he wouldn't pretend to be
Sharon's first night in Paris, after she arrived and met Josh, the hotel felt very different to Ashley. As expected, Josh did not return to their room that night. Instead, he stayed in Sharon's room which was located right next to theirs. Ashley lay down on her bed, but the sadness that was choking her heart prevented her from sleeping. Amidst the silence of the night, Ashley could hear quite a few noisy and disturbing sounds - laughter, small talk, and above all, the sound of Sharon who was probably enjoying her evening with Josh. Every second felt like time stood still, yet filled with anxiety.Ashley pulled the blanket closer to her body, trying to calm her mind. However, in the darkness, the loneliness and hurt continued to haunt her. It was a very hard night. Ashley thought, why did this happen to her? The two of them-Josh and Ashley-had shared beautiful moments. They had laughed together, talked about the future, and planned things. But now, Ashley felt like a stranger in Josh's
That morning, the Parisian air felt colder than usual, as if it shared Ashley's pent-up anxiety. Upon opening her eyes, she was surprised to find herself in Josh's arms, closer than ever before. Their position this time was very different-their faces were too close, almost inches apart. They stared at each other with their eyes wide open, both stunned.Josh seemed to have just realized their position. Reflexively, he pulled his body slightly, separating the distance between them. However, their gazes remained focused, as if time had slowed down. There was only an awkward silence between them. Josh, who usually looked relaxed, now looked a little uneasy. On the other hand, Ashley could only look at the man with mixed feelings-between confused, upset, and not knowing what to do."Ma-sorry," Josh stammered, finally breaking the silence. "I... didn't mean-"Ashley looked at him sharply. She could feel his irregular heartbeat, perhaps even faster than usual. "I... don't know what to say,"
Josh and Sharon spent their days in Paris full of laughter and fun.As per the list they had made long before their departure, they started exploring one tourist spot after another.Their first destination was, of course, the Louvre. They walked hand-in-hand through the iconic pyramid-shaped glass entrance, Sharon's eyes sparkling with enthusiasm.Inside the museum, they stopped for a long time in front of the Mona Lisa painting, talking quietly, joking about how small it was compared to their expectations. Josh took many photos of Sharon in front of other famous paintings. No matter that there was a ban on photography in some parts, Josh quietly stole moments - too eager to capture Sharon's contented smile.Afterwards, they walked to the Eiffel Tower. There, they took pictures at various corners of the Champ de Mars park, and then climbed to the top of the tower, getting a bird's-eye view of the entire city of Paris.Sharon hugged Josh tightly as the wind picked up, chuckling and tea
Josh sighed, his eyes closed for a moment, as if holding back a burst of frustration. He walked over to the sofa, looking at it with skepticism.“It's small and hard, Ash,” he said, his tone getting heavy. "I've been exhausted since Korea. Had to spend the night with Sharon..."Josh stopped, realizing his mistake in saying the name.Ashley's face instantly changed. The look in her eyes froze.“Yes, of course,” Ashley muttered, her voice laden with bitter sarcasm. “You're exhausted from ‘serving’ Sharon, then think I should just understand?”Josh growled in frustration. “That's not what I meant!”Ashley approached, standing just a few steps away from him, her body tensed like a bow ready to shoot.“Every time I try to feel better about all this, every time I start to think maybe we could be friends, maybe even... more, you always remind me who I am in your eyes!” she said sharply."Just a formality. Someone you married because of a contract, while your heart is elsewhere."Josh returne
Josh had finally arrived in Paris. The long, tiring flight paid off a little as he set foot on the European soil, greeted with beautiful afternoon skies, cool air, and the typical hustle and bustle of the city of love.Ashley walked beside her, pulling her small suitcase. They both looked a little clumsy-not because they were not used to being together, but because each of them was still trying to find a new rhythm in this strange relationship of theirs: a loveless marriage, but with an official status to live up to.They arrived at the luxurious five-star hotel.Josh took care of the check-in while occasionally stealing glances at Ashley who looked beautiful in a beige coat and white scarf. For some reason, there was something about her that felt different that day. More calm. More natural. They took the elevator to the highest floor.Ashley stepped in first as the door opened. "Wow..." she muttered spontaneously.Josh just smiled a little at her amazed expression.Their room was eno
Two weeks have passed since the warm but awkward meeting between Josh, Ashley, and their two moms. Many things have changed since then. The wounds on Ashley's body are slowly healing, both physically and mentally. Mrs. Kim finally declared Ashley healthy, and the news brought a wave of new plans-including the long-delayed honeymoon.Josh's mom, with her typical enthusiasm, decided to give a special gift: a honeymoon trip to Paris. Everything was organized in perfect detail, from the first-class flight to the luxurious hotel overlooking the Seine River. Ashley herself could hardly believe it was all happening so fast. But, on the other side of the city, Josh faced a more complicated dilemma. The night before departure, Josh sat in his car, staring at his phone screen that displayed Sharon's name. He took a deep breath before finally pressing the call button. When Sharon picked up, Josh could almost feel the anger simmering from the other side of the line, even before a word was spoken.
After cleaning herself, treating her wounds, and taking her medication, Ashley let out a long sigh. There was one important thing she had to do today.Ashley stared at her phone screen hesitantly for a long time. Before finally pressing the “Mom” contact and pressing the call button. She waited for the phone to connect. Her heart was beating lightly when her mother's voice came from the other side. In a low voice, almost a whisper, Ashley said, “Mom,” she said softly as she heard her mother's voice on the other end. "Today I'm going to see Dr. Kim for a consultation on the treatment of my injuries. After that... Can I stop by to see her for a while?"She didn't mention names, there was no need. Between them, it didn't take too many words to understand who she meant. A few seconds of silence passed, before her mother finally replied in a soft yet cautious tone, "Alright. I'll have them arrange access for you today."Ashley breathed a sigh of relief. There was something warm and bitter
Josh came home the next morning, his face tired but still forced a faint smile. Ashley had expected it. There was no need to explain. When the door opened and the sound of Josh's footsteps could be heard, Ashley only glanced briefly from between the kitchen doors. He was heading out, a small bag slung over his shoulder, sandals already on.“Where are you going?” asked Josh, his voice heavy as always, but this time there was a curious tone he couldn't hide.Ashley buttoned up her jacket. "To the family dermatologist. I want to start treatment for these wounds," she said with a faint smile, pointing to her still slightly bruised cheek.Josh put the car keys down on the table with a loud noise, as if accidentally venting a small annoyance. “I'll drop you off.”Ashley immediately shook her head. "You don't have to. I can do it myself. Besides, you look tired. Get some rest."“I can, really—”“No need, Josh.” Her voice sounded firmer than she would have liked. It made Josh pause for a mome
