When Josh stepped into the house, the first thing he saw was his mother, seated stiffly on one of the sofas in the living room.
She was facing the entrance—the door that separated the foyer from the rest of the house—as if she had been waiting for him all this time, ensuring he would catch her expression the moment he walked in. Sour and tense.
Josh’s steps faltered. He still couldn't guess what he was about to face at that moment. As far as he knew, there was nothing wrong within the family. He also felt that he hadn't done anything wrong lately, especially to his mother. In fact, compared to his older siblings, he was the most obedient, the most reliable.
Yet his mother’s piercing gaze cut through him. Her eyes unblinked. With her arms crossed in front of her chest, she watched Josh approach her in silence, without saying a word.
Josh swallowed hard. The air in the room was thick with something unsettling, something oppressive. It was eerie and cold, despite the lights still burning brightly.
He saw no one else around, except his mother. The servants had probably rested and returned to their places —considering it was almost midnight when he got here. And his father, on the other hand, had probably fallen asleep from exhaustion—or hadn't come home yet. Or perhaps, not planning to come home at all.
Either way, in the absence of his father's presence, only made this moment more difficult.
All the uncertainty, endless speculation, and a creeping sense of dread coiled tightly in Josh’s chest, made him remain silent without daring to say a word. Even a simple greeting felt too dangerous.
Slowly, he lowered himself onto the sofa across from his mother. And waited.
Finally, a deep and heavy sigh out from his mother, preceded her words.
"Do you know why I called you at this hour?" Her tone of voice was flat and completely stiff, without the slightest touch of emotion.
Josh thought for a moment, then replied, "I'm sorry, Mom. I don’t know."
Then the woman let out her sigh again. This time sharp and harsh—like a blade slicing through the tense air. Showing the frustration within her.
"Don't know? NO IDEA?!" Her voice rose even higher. Her eyes widening in disbelief, that her youngest son who she was often proud of was being so stupid.
Josh flinched. He gasped when he heard his mother's sudden shout. His forehead furrowed with a deep bow. He lowered his gaze because didn't dare to glance or look at his mother’s glare.
He was really confused as to what was really going on. What had he done? What could possibly have made his mother this disturbed and furious? The problem was that he really didn't know what caused her mother to be like this. He didn't feel like there was anything wrong in their internal family relationships these days. Nothing seemed out of place. He, and his two older siblings, also didn't seem to have done anything wrong. Their family situation was just normal. There weren't any external problems either—all work and business matters were running smoothly. Their situation could be said to be perfectly fine.
So, then… what?
What was going on?
His mind scrambled for answers.
Josh tried to encourage himself. In a soft and stammering tone, he tried to apologize again, "I—I'm sorry, Mom. I really don’t know, Mom. I—"
"You have no right to apologize."
Josh's breath hitched. He then fell silent. He thought even harder, but he was stuck at the end.
“Do you know why you don't deserve my apology?” His mother snorted again, then immediately continued her words without intending to wait for a useless answer from her son. "I can even already tell that you have no clue. Don't you? You're so shameless. You embarrass me!"
This time he totally remained silent.
"Did you think my warning I made the other day was just for fun?” she continued, her voice sharp, “Did you think I was joking? That you could take my words so lightly?"
Her mother's voice was flat again, no longer as fiery as before. Even so, there was still a strong touch of sarcasm and anger in it.
Josh's forehead furrowed even more.
His lips parted, desperate to say something, anything.
“I'm sorry, mom, but I really don't know,” his words trailed off, his breathing labored, his voice growing slower and slower as if it were nothing more than a murmur, “I don't know what happened...”
Josh’s voice was low, but the woman in her forties' ears were still healthy enough to hear his son’s mumbling.
“That witch really has rotted your brain.”
Instantly Josh came to his senses.
At the point when his mother uttered that sentence, Josh really only just realized the impasse that was clogging up all the speculations in his head. He began to understand where his mother was going with this, and why she had become so agitated.
He should have guessed and taken precautions when her mother suddenly told him to go home at this hour. As if there was some urgency that couldn't wait until tomorrow. And this, so far, had only ever—only ever—been related to one thing: Sharon.
There was no mistaking it. Surely her mother's current anger had something to do with his relationship with Sharon. If not, who else would her mother call a witch.
Josh’s heart pounded in his ears. He had been so careful. He had covered his tracks. He had made sure no one would know that he was still seeing her.
Supposedly, he should have suspected his mother knew that he was still in contact with Sharon even though it was the last plausible possibility... even though he had covered it up as carefully and carefully as possible. But, still, he should have known. He should have expected this. He should have been prepared.
Because, no matter what, there was always a chance that her mother would eventually find out.
The problem was, the question now was, how could she?
How would she find out?
Josh barely noticed as his mother reached for her phone and pressed something on the lit screen.
The look in his eyes now seemed to fade and tremble. He could see the images of the apocalypse unfolding before him. Ready to pick him up and crush him to pieces and ashes.
"By the way, where were you last night? And today?" His mother stopped pressing her phone screen, and started asking questions. She half wanted to make fun of her own son, but she also wanted to find out how much he could lie to her.
"I—" instantly his throat became drier than a desert. Josh even had trouble swallowing his own saliva. His eyes trembled even more, and he brushed the backs of his legs with a frantic look.
"Answer me. I want to hear it straight from your mouth."
His mother's gaze became more serious and sharp. Meanwhile, her son who was sitting in front of her could only look down and utter stammering words.
The woman knew where this conversation would end. That much was clear. But more than that, deep in her heart, above all her own selfishness, perhaps there was still a slight desire to see Josh show his honesty.
Even if it was difficult, obviously. Because if he were to tell the truth, he would be admitting to blatantly breaking the agreement he had with her. And there were consequences that lay ahead.
But the woman waited anyway. She wanted to see how far her youngest son would go just for a cheap woman.
His tongue felt heavy, and his pulse unsteady. His fingers brushed against the fabric of his pants, without him realizing.
"I—" Josh cleared his throat, "Today, I—"
If his mother was asked a question like this... The biggest possibility was that she had already found out. Although Josh himself didn’t know how.Maybe someone had seen him with Sharon as they spent the day outside together. Maybe it was his own mother who saw them—no, his mother would've immediately confronted them both—especially Sharon—not called him alone at this time of night. Or maybe Jason had seen him with Sharon at the restaurant this afternoon? Although he was sure Jason hadn't seen Sharon at the restaurant, there was still a slight possibility.Or—Could Ashley have complained to his mom?His mom didn’t just ask about today. But she mentioned last night. If it was really Jason or someone who knew him, they wouldn't know that he stayed at Sharon's apartment last night. Was this all Ashley's doing?Clearly, right now he had to answer very carefully. The probability for him was fifty percent for an answer. One to tell a lie, and one to tell a little lie.Because as bad as it
Josh was frantic. He couldn't answer anything. His voice suddenly disappeared as if swallowed by a complicated life dilemma. It was as if his entire body was swallowed by quicksand with thousands of leeches eating away at his body. His current situation was really difficult. Being forced to choose between the interests of his family and his feelings for Sharon, was like telling him to commit suicide. There was nothing he could choose. There was nothing he could prioritize over the others. Everything was important to him. That's why he kept in touch with Sharon despite agreeing to break up with her. He had done everything he could. He was even willing to spend a lot of time making plans and being more careful so as not to get caught by anyone. But Min Jinah was really a surprise. He believed it was all over since the incident from years ago had been resolved and faded over time.He suddenly felt incredibly naive
"Then how about last night. You haven't answered where you were last night?"Josh again swallowed his saliva with difficulty.“At home,” he replied softly. “Of course I was home with Ashley.”His mother glanced at him without interest. Even though she didn't actually know whether her son was lying or not—she herself had asked this one question only because Min Jinah was babbling incoherently about how she wasn't sure if she'd seen Josh or someone who looked like Josh going out late at night from his apartment on the wedding night."I hope you're not lying. I heard something uncomfortable, but I don't know if it's true or not... But leaving a woman alone on the wedding night—that would hurt her a lot. You have to understand that."Josh's jaw hardened.Remembering that he not only left Ashley last night, but also fought and was rude to her, made his guilt tingle again."I also want you to keep your other promises. We can't wait too long,“ her mother thought again, ”should I legalize our

Tonight Josh was forced to return to his own home. After his very intense conversation with his mother, it was clear that he didn't dare to go straight back to Sharon's apartment. In fact, he was unsure whether he should be determined to stay away from Sharon for a while, or whether he should be stubborn enough to meet her secretly as usual. Which of course came with consequences that were far worse than before. If he took the first option, compromised with Sharon and kept their distance—even though the girl would explode in anger and refuse to part with him without listening to any reason, as he had tried in the past—maybe he would be able to delay a little time to find a way to get back together with Sharon without having to worry about any sanctions. But if he took the second option, by continuing to prioritize Sharon and breaking his own promise—which he had even said with a face full of guilt less than an hour ago—then, he really had to be ready to accept a punishment that would
“Ashley, cous,” she heard the greeting as her glass was clinked by another champagne glass. Her head turned toward the source of the voice. And her eyes caught a familiar figure she last saw around five years ago—as a surprise guest at her home in New Zealand. That girl had arrived in pieces then, heartbroken and a mess, if memory served her right. And her following days had been forcibly filled with listening to the girl's non-stop cry. The corners of Ashley's lips were drawn wide without realizing it. She warmly embraced the eccentric girl standing before her. Dressed in a bright yellow babydoll dress paired with a hot pink blazer, fifteen-centimeter heels of the same color, and an array of piercings sparkling on her face and ears. Sera Song, her cousin. Who had a similar fate to her, though their circumstances weren’t entirely the same. The one person in their family who could be just as annoyingly stubborn as she was. And yet, ironically, the only family member who always both
Ashley stopped and looked around, searching for a spot that could conceal her completely while still letting her hear their conversation. To her left, about three to four steps away from where Josh was, stood a large pillar. Ashley very carefully walked on tiptoe and hid behind it.“You mean I can't see you?” The girl's voice sounded raised. “You said you wouldn't leave me. But what? Look. What I was afraid of actually happened, right? All your words turned out to be a bunch of bullshit, huh, Josh?”“No, no. That's not what I meant. If they see you—” Josh paused for a moment. Instead of finishing his sentence, he remained silent for a long time.Ashley's neck spontaneously stretched longer, thinking her ears couldn't pick up their voices. But no matter how hard she focused her hearing, not a single sound could be heard.Even so, Ashley remained still, waiting like a statue. She even breathed in and out very slowly.“I was just afraid you'd get hurt,” Josh's voice reappeared. At this m
The look on Ashley's face was a complete mess. Something inside her head was boiling, and her chest felt like it was being beaten from within. Creating an agonizing sensation of pain. She was angry.Very angry, and hurt. She couldn't even bear to imagine what she looked like now. Because even without seeing her reflection, she could guess how messy and pathetic she looked.Ashley slowly tried to stand up. Fixing the top of her dress and brushing off the dust floor on her dress. As for her disheveled hair, she ran her fingers through it, ruffling and combing as best she could do.Only when she felt that her hair no longer stuck out too much, she stepped out from behind the partition. She avoided making eye contact with whoever it was and moved quickly to the elevator. This time, luck seemed to be on her side. No one else got into the elevator with her. And the hallway on the floor where her room was located was also empty. The first thing she did after making it into the room was run s

That day, Josh willingly complied with Sharon's every whim—going shopping, buying all kinds of overpriced treats, and patiently waiting while she indulged in endless beauty treatments. But since he had been deprived of rest and sleep for the past few days—he had to be involved in family gatherings before the wedding, drowning in work with a project deadline just three days before the wedding day, and especially the hardest part, was dealing with Sharon's relentless tantrums... the impact on his body was real. It was like he had been beaten and crushed to the bone.He spent the entire day walking from store to store, sitting for long periods, then standing again—so many times that his legs nearly gave out from sheer exhaustion. Drowsiness clung to him like a heavy fog, so difficult to endure. His life felt disconnected from his own body. Every step he took was numb. Every movement happened without thought—like he was automatically going through the motions, like he was on autopilot.Me
"So, this is your house?"Josh gasped. He automatically jumped to his feet when he recognized the owner of the voice he knew so well was suddenly so close."Hyung—," Josh blinked tensely. And without him realizing it his eyes instinctively glanced to the spot where Sharon had just left.Of course, Jason caught that trembling glance. His eyes narrowed slightly. It felt so good, like he had caught a big fish. And Jason couldn’t help but feel a surge of satisfaction.Intending to play a little prank on his brother, Jason only gave a small nod, "Yeah?"Josh cleared his throat, his mind racing to come up with a reasonable excuse in this crucial moment. Until it unwittingly caused brief silence between them."I—had an important meeting... with a colleague here," he thinks he managed to give an answer. Followed by an awkward laugh that escaped her mouth immediately afterward. His demeanor was stiff, and his hands were clasped together—demonstrating a very bad lie."Oh, I see. But why lie at
"Mr. Kwak, if you see a pharmacy, please stop and get me some headache medicine," Jason said, taking a deep breath and letting it out. "I don't know why my head feels so heavy.""Yes, sir," the middle-aged driver replied, giving a quick nod, "I'll drive more slowly."That man with a well-defined oval face with sharp but refined features loosened his tie and unbuttoned the top button of his shirt. Then adjusted his sitting position so that he could lean his head against the seat, and closed his eyes. Hoping the tension would ease even a little. Not long after, the car came to a gentle stop."Sir, do you need anything else besides the medicine?"Jason slowly opened his eyes, blinking away the haze, "No. I don't need anything else. That's all."The driver nodded before stepping out of the car.Jason grabbed the water bottle next to him and took a long and refreshing sip.His schedule had been brutal over the past month. A lot of work piled up. And one engagement after another, each deman
