16. More Terrifying than Any Ghost

Ashley rephrased her question, "After all those long stories—you’re telling me it wasn’t a ghost that bothered you? Then what? Who?" her tone firm but tinged with disbelief and one eyebrow rose.

Not that she was disappointed because her best friend wasn't being haunted by ghosts, which meant there weren't any dangerous things lurking or to worry about. Because obviously no one in their right mind would want to experience horror—whether it was real or not. But what Ashley truly felt was frustration. After being so immersed in Bella’s story and feeling the chills crawl up her spine, it turned out that the whole story was just nonsense.

She was even sure that Bella herself had no idea what or who had disturbed her throughout the night. There was no certainty whether it was connected to the strange woman who had entered Mike’s room earlier.

"Actually... I don't know," Bella replied nonchalantly. While picking at the assortment of dishes she had ordered as if completely unaware of how tense Ashley had become

Bella’s story had almost made Ashley believe in ghosts, and now she was left staring at her friend with a mixture of disbelief and exasperation.

"Everything I experienced was so irrational that I started thinking—even ghosts might be able to mimic human actions. But at the same time, I wanted to believe they weren’t ghosts. That way, I wouldn’t have to worry about one of them following me home," Bella sighed, her shoulders slumping. "Honestly, I’m still not sure, okay?"

Ashley didn't respond. She was focusing on scooping a piece of tiramisu cake onto her plate. She hadn’t even touched the main course—her mouth felt bitter and her head was spinning as if she needed something sweet to clear the fog in her mind.

Bella finally let out a low growl of annoyance. "But if that woman really is human—whether she’s your cousin or not—I’d love to pull her demon-like hair out."

"Why did you think it was Sera, anyway? Mike could’ve met someone else yesterday."

"I don't know..." Bella pondered for a moment. "I guess it’s because her posture looked similar to Sera’s. Plus, there was this faint scent of perfume at the time that reminded me of hers. I don’t know, maybe it was just similar... like the one I smelled on that girl in the afternoon. That’s what made me automatically think it was her."

Ashley stopped eating her cake and shifted her attention to the steak on her plate, cutting it into smaller, bite-sized pieces.

Silence settled between them, punctuated only by the clinking of utensils and occasional chuckles about the food. They really enjoyed all the food on the table. During that brief respite, Ashley carefully processed Bella’s story, trying to piece together a logical conclusion.

"When you see Mike later, ask him whether he was really in his room all night or not. If he was, ask if he experienced anything strange like you did. If he says no, then it’s obvious he was with a woman. And as for whatever disturbed your night—whether it was a ghost or not—it’s probably best to just forget about that unsettling experience," Ashley said, wiping the corner of her mouth with a napkin.

Bella grinned faintly. "Good idea. I’ll save my curiosity and frustration until I see that crazy guy tonight."

Ashley continued, "After that you can urge Mike to tell you about that woman. Then if there's even the slightest chance that the woman was Sera, as you suspected yesterday... Do me a favor, will you?

"Sure thing."

Ashley blinked, trying to choose her words carefully, "Tell him not to get further involved with her."

"Why?" Bella winked, shot her a questioning look, "Are you worried Sera is going to ruin Mike's life?"

Ashley didn’t reply, but the small, almost wistful smile tugging at her lips didn’t escape Bella’s notice. A sudden realization hit her like a bolt of lightning.

"You can’t be serious!" Bella gasped. "I was just joking earlier! But are you saying that Sera’s really that bad? I mean, yeah, she’s a little eccentric and kind of out there, but is she really trouble?"

Bella herself initially just blurted out without any intention. But after seeing Ashley's response, she was surprised that her own words could be true.

"That's not it," Ashley tried to straighten out Bella's misunderstanding, "It’s not that she’s bad. I actually care about Sera because she is far better than most of my family. And Mike... I just don’t want him getting hurt because he has to deal with us. You know how it is—our family isn’t exactly normal like others."

Bella’s face softened, an understanding look appeared in her eyes. Of course she knew Ashley's conditions—or at least the parts Ashley was willing to share. But seeing how her best friend was living in that sprawling, lonely house with only servants as company, isolated from parents and extended family… It could be roughly concluded that Ashley's family situation was indeed very complicated.

"I get it," Bella said quietly. "They probably already have a list of ‘potential husbands’ lined up for her."

Ashley gave a small hum of agreement.

"But hey," Bella teased, flashing a cheeky grin, "At least you’re one of the lucky ones. You were set up with your first love. You said you liked him and both of you were childhood friends, right? That’s like straight out of a drama," Bella was still smiling at her thought.

"Oh—" Ashley laughed, full of emptiness, "Yeah..."

If only Bella knows what situation that actually happened, she will not be able to call Ashley lucky. The reality was far from the romantic fantasy Bella painted.

She swallowed hard.

Apart from the excitement she had told Bella about when she met Josh again, she was actually quite aware and understood that arranged marriages rarely led to happiness. And she had also always prepared herself for what she would face after marriage—for example, how much Josh's family will use her for their interests.

But the storm she got on her wedding day somehow hurt her more than all that. It still stung like salt on a raw wound.

It was also confusing to her because she had never thought about the fact that Josh might had a girlfriend. She wasn’t prepared for that kind of situation—how to react or respond, with good common sense. Her outburst the previous day had been impulsive and reckless. And now, she didn't know whether her spontaneous aggression would benefit her or only make things worse in the future.

For years, she had carefully maintained her position, always playing it safe to avoid being discarded by her family. But now, with Josh’s reputation and her family’s honor on the line, she couldn’t afford to make a single mistake. She had to find a way to keep Josh from causing even more damage to her situation.

She might be able to bear the disappointment of Josh having another woman. But she could not bear the consequences that would clearly complicate her position in her own family.

It was true what Josh said last night, if his secret got out, both Josh’s image and her own would be ruined. The consequences would ripple through both families—hers especially.

If that happened, the blame would fall entirely on her. And they would no longer have any reason to keep her as part of the Song family.

They wouldn’t hesitate to cut her off completely. And that thought was almost more terrifying than any ghost story Bella could ever tell.

Ashley couldn’t let herself be cast aside just because of someone else’s mistake. She couldn’t afford to sever ties with her family—not when so much of her life still depended on them.

Followed by an awkward laugh that escaped her mouth immediately afterward. His demeanor was stiff, and his hands were clasped together—demonstrating a very bad lie."Oh, I see. But why lie at

Ashley's head tilted spontaneously, accompanied by a frown and a raised eyebrow. “No.”'Is it that obvious?'For a moment Ashley was silent and thoughtful. She was confused whether she had just accidentally said something she shouldn't have said. Or were there words or gestures that she didn't realize she had done that suggested that something wrong was going on between her and Josh.If it was the case that she refused to inform Josh because her current condition was fine—it shouldn't have provoked Jason's suspicion, right?Ashley had no idea if it was something that could bother him.Or, perhaps, should she have just obeyed when Jason intended to tell Josh? After all, no matter how much ego and pride she had to maintain, the thought of having to take care of her own wounded self like this would probably exhaust her even more. It wouldn't hurt if she took the opportunity to take advantage of Josh. With Jason here, there was no way Josh would blatantly reject and ignore. However, regar

Ashley was very surprised that Jason suddenly pointed to the scratch marks on her temple. Especially when he directly and openly expressed his speculation that the wound Ashley had was not a new wound.Although the wound was not a new one, the incident that led to the creation of it only happened two days ago. So it shouldn't be too obvious.Meanwhile, Ashley couldn't give an honest answer because it would bring up new problems that she might not be able to handle. Josh had clearly warned her not to tell anyone about his relationship with that girl. So, that made her guess if Josh’s family also had no idea about what he was doing.Telling someone that his little brother was currently worried because he was afraid of his relationship with a girl being exposed should sound really fun, because that jerk Josh would definitely get into trouble. Although Ashley had no idea about Jason's opinion on the matter, when looking at the big picture, his family probably wouldn't be happy because suc

As she recalls, she has only met Jason a few times so far.First, during the meeting of the two big families about a month before the wedding. And secondly, on his wedding day, two days ago. The rest of the time she had only ever seen his picture in passing when looking up Josh on an internet search engine. Therefore, even though they were now connected and became a family, she still couldn't immediately recognize the man in just one look. It may seem strange, but it's not. Indeed, Ashley was so unfamiliar with everything that was going on in her life right now. She didn't even know well the man she married—despite their story years ago—let alone his family whom she had only met and talked to once or twice. The four months Ashley spent after finding out the purpose of her parents calling her back here were short and didn't give her enough clues. The moment she realized that it was her brother-in-law calling her, the man immediately approached her with a surprised expression.“You're c

Another bystander, who was in a neutral state—not panicked or adrenaline-fueled-—would probably think of doing something more risk-minimizing than what Ashley was doing at the time. At least, whatever step was most likely to save the old woman, but also not hurt herself at the same time. As unlikely as it may be, however, people who intend to save someone from danger should understand to take the option with the least risk of harm.Even if the situation calls for the rescuer to sacrifice themselves, it should not be in the way like what Ashley just did.Instead, she jumped up and became a shield for the other person, and then afterward tried with great difficulty to carry the old woman’s body away from the car. But because she didn't take into account her weak strength and the weight of the fatty old woman, when she stepped out frantically, she automatically fell down and rolled along with the old woman. The people in the vicinity who were initially unaware, stopped what they were doi

Ashley walked out of their apartment building. Down the long street and the large park in front of her, then out through the main gate. With hurried steps—without her realizing it—her feet kept moving further and further away from the apartment neighborhood. The only thing that occupied her mind right now, other than getting away from Josh, was making her stomach full. That's why before she left the apartment without a word, all she did was grab her wallet. The disgust caused by Josh's long words made her immediately finish her lunch without wanting to linger there. Even though she had only eaten a few bites of the dish. But being at the same table with that man, while listening to his words, really made her very tired. It was as if the intentions of the two of them who wanted to try to find a way out and come to an agreement that was in line, could never happen—no matter how many talks were held or how long they looked for it.As she consciously put away her unfinished bowl of rice a

Ashley could immediately grasp the meaning of Josh's words just now."Why are you saying that? As if you care about my status? Even if I end up becoming a widow, that's my problem, not yours."Although Ashley knew all of Josh's long words were not completely wrong, she felt that she couldn't admit it too quickly. Her ego was currently provoked too much to be assuaged in the blink of an eye.It was true that when the idea of divorce came into her head, she was completely blinded by the anger and disappointment that attacked her in one day. It seemed natural that she would lose her mind at that time. Then when her mouth proposed an agreement, it was solely because her pride was being trampled on by Josh and his uncivilized girlfriend. So she instinctively searched for a solution to regain her strength and a way to keep her from getting even worse—and to benefit herself. And somehow divorce was the only thing that came to mind. But this proved that Josh's words were not wrong. Ashley di

Josh looked at Ashley with mixed feelings. He just realized that what he did had a serious impact on other people besides himself and Sharon. All this time, so far, he only thought that he and Sharon were the only ones suffering from being in a difficult situation that was very unfair. But as it turned out, all these things also triggered Ashley's guilt. And what Ashley said was true. The complicated relationship that suddenly had to be established between the two of them did leave a big hole in Josh's heart. He was only good at covering it up by pretending to look fine when agreeing to their marriage. Then when his relationship with Sharon came to light, the uncomfortable feeling was certainly heightened by the outburst of various other types of emotions."No, you're not. You're not an intruder. It's better not to think that way. There's no point in feeling guilty. It's all too complicated."Josh's mission was to make up with Ashley. So right now, he tried to encourage her in any way

PRESENTJosh still vividly remembers filling his days with schemes of the best he could do after the news of the arranged marriage. Her mother knew, her father also, her two older siblings probably understood him even better—that he was actually very resistant to the sudden marriage. Even if he finally agreed, they knew that he was only doing it for Sharon's sake. Because by agreeing to all the plans made and all the conditions put forward by his parents, Sharon's life would be saved. So, with a huge bravery, he was desperate to create a secret scenario behind his forced consent. He really couldn't turn away and let his family hurt the girl just like that. To him, Sharon was his responsibility that he could never let go of. There were many things he had to make sure went on as it should, just as it was, without changing a bit even if he had to pay very dearly—marrying another girl.Just imagining how to explain all that to Sharon didn't sit well with him.Even to this day, after all

But as soon as he dropped his gaze on the inanimate object, his imagination and hopes about the future of his life with Sharon died. The sound of his father's cell phone broke the short silence between them. After checking the identity of the caller, his father's finger slid over the button and answered briefly. A “Hello” was followed by a few “Hm-hm” and finished with “Yeah, I'll be right there.”Josh watched his father's movements from the tail of his eyes in silence. With his mouth tightly shut and head still bowed, he stared at the folder that held the record of how his life story would end.The man who had almost the same facial lines as Josh glanced at the woman beside him for a signal. The woman, Josh's mother, nodded while flashing a faint smile.“Don't try to make trouble, or even spoil it,” the old man stood up as he straightened his suit, "We've already
