As she recalls, she has only met Jason a few times so far.
First, during the meeting of the two big families about a month before the wedding. And secondly, on his wedding day, two days ago. The rest of the time she had only ever seen his picture in passing when looking up Josh on an internet search engine.
Therefore, even though they were now connected and became a family, she still couldn't immediately recognize the man in just one look. It may seem strange, but it's not. Indeed, Ashley was so unfamiliar with everything that was going on in her life right now. She didn't even know well the man she married—despite their story years ago—let alone his family whom she had only met and talked to once or twice.
The four months Ashley spent after finding out the purpose of her parents calling her back here were short and didn't give her enough clues.
The moment she realized that it was her brother-in-law calling her, the man immediately approached her with a surprised expression.
“You're covered in blood,” he instantly turned his head towards the middle-aged man who was already there, “You hit someone!” his eyes bulged.
“No, sir, no,” the man called Mr. Kwak immediately denied. "I didn't hit them. I'm sure I didn't."
"How can you say you didn't? Look at their condition!" Jason seemed to be getting angry.
“We didn't get hit,” Ashley chimed in. She tried to mediate the brief feud going on between those two men. "We just fell down. I'm alright. And I don't think it's blood."
Ashley touched the red splotches on her clothes and then rubbed her thumb with her other finger—intending to find out if it wasn't blood, because she didn't feel like smelling the carnal odor that would surely be strong with such a huge quantity of blood. Instead, what she smelled was more like dark fruity spiced berry as distinctive as that of red wine. Then it was all confirmed once she saw that the wine bottle that was originally in the plastic bag had broken and the entire contents were flowing everywhere around them.
“It's not blood,” Ashley assured again in a low voice that was still affected by her shock. Her hand, which also still felt weak, tried to lift it up to point at the plastic bag that had been messed up.
Jason followed Ashley's direction trying to tell her with a furrowed brow, then took turns looking at Ashley and an old woman lying in pain beside her. Whether the red liquid was blood or not, Jason felt he had to get this over with immediately—take care of Ashley and the old woman to get the medical help they needed, as well as put an end to the incident that was attracting more crowds and attention from others.
“You still need to be examined to know the overall condition,” he said and simply ignored Ashley's statement about the blood, "Mr. Kwak, take them to the hospital. Hurry up and get them into the car."
“No, not me,” Ashley, once again, refused. "I'm fine. It's this grandmother who needs to be taken to the hospital right away."
Jason sighed, “You, and that woman, I'll take all of you to the hospital,” his voice sounded firm.
"Sir, the ambulance will be here soon. We can't take them in an ordinary car. Especially the old woman, we can't carelessly lift and move her body. Let's wait a moment, the medical staff knows better what is the right thing to do."
“Ah—yes, that's right.”
So they could only wait for the ambulance for help. And what they did afterwards was to make sure that the old woman remained conscious until help arrived, and kept trying to ask which part of the body hurt the most in case there was a possibility of serious injuries.
After the ambulance arrived, the old woman was moved inside with Ashley, as well as Jason who insisted on getting into it too. Mr. Kwak, himself, followed in his car.
The old woman and Ashley were handled by the team who immediately conducted a complete examination and provided the necessary treatment. After the doctor in charge finished checking all of their clinical conditions, and the laboratory and x-ray results came out, he explained the situation.
Jason asked again, “So there are no signs of a crash?”
"Yes. Everything is good. There is no damage to internal organs. Only abrasions from being scratched by the road surface. But especially for the old lady, her heart is beating faster than normal and her blood pressure is also high, most likely due to the shock effect. From her statement she didn't know if she had high blood pressure or not, so she should be monitored for the next few days. So far there is nothing to worry about. They can go home once the medicine I gave them in the IV runs out."
Ashley spoke up after the doctor left, "I told you earlier that we just fell down. We didn't get hit at all. And I'm fine. I shouldn't have to go through so many examinations."
"Crashed or not, but you are still wounded. So it's better to check everything than to regret it later. You have scratches everywhere," Jason pointed to the many wounds on Ashley's right hand and leg. “At least those wounds should be treated as well to prevent infection.”
Ashley only responded with a nod.
She felt there was no need to contradict the man's words. After all, everything was done. She just had to wait for a while and then she could go home. So she could relieve herself of the awkwardness she had inexplicably felt while she was around that man. It doesn't need many reasons why she feels uncomfortable, because she left home to avoid the crazy man named Josh, only to meet up with his eldest brother whom she didn't know well and get involved in this grueling accident situation.
She glanced at the old woman on the bed next to her. Several nurses were still attending to her injuries and doing repeated checks every few moments.
“Wait.” Jason's voice made Ashley turn her head. The man narrowed his eyes to focus his vision more on Ashley’s face. Jason remembered that the girl had fallen to the right. With wounds that filled only the right side of her body. But on her left temple and cheekbone, there was another wound that he accidentally caught. "What is that wound? It doesn't look like a new wound," he pointed while asking lightly.
Ashley was very surprised that Jason suddenly pointed to the scratch marks on her temple. Especially when he directly and openly expressed his speculation that the wound Ashley had was not a new wound.Although the wound was not a new one, the incident that led to the creation of it only happened two days ago. So it shouldn't be too obvious.Meanwhile, Ashley couldn't give an honest answer because it would bring up new problems that she might not be able to handle. Josh had clearly warned her not to tell anyone about his relationship with that girl. So, that made her guess if Josh’s family also had no idea about what he was doing.Telling someone that his little brother was currently worried because he was afraid of his relationship with a girl being exposed should sound really fun, because that jerk Josh would definitely get into trouble. Although Ashley had no idea about Jason's opinion on the matter, when looking at the big picture, his family probably wouldn't be happy because suc
Ashley's head tilted spontaneously, accompanied by a frown and a raised eyebrow. “No.”'Is it that obvious?'For a moment Ashley was silent and thoughtful. She was confused whether she had just accidentally said something she shouldn't have said. Or were there words or gestures that she didn't realize she had done that suggested that something wrong was going on between her and Josh.If it was the case that she refused to inform Josh because her current condition was fine—it shouldn't have provoked Jason's suspicion, right?Ashley had no idea if it was something that could bother him.Or, perhaps, should she have just obeyed when Jason intended to tell Josh? After all, no matter how much ego and pride she had to maintain, the thought of having to take care of her own wounded self like this would probably exhaust her even more. It wouldn't hurt if she took the opportunity to take advantage of Josh. With Jason here, there was no way Josh would blatantly reject and ignore. However, regar
Ashley gasped because she didn't expect her footing to be that weak just because of a few scratches. The pain that ran along her limbs was no joke. A sharp pain that both gripped and gave a shocking sensation, overcame and crept up half of her body.Startled by the sudden weakening of her limbs strength—she herself was also unprepared because she thought she could walk well without relying on anything—Ashley raised her hands to grab onto anything nearby that she could use as a handhold to prevent her from falling. But since there was nothing around her, she just waved at the empty space. Making her body immediately unsteady and almost fell to the right.Luckily, at that time, Jason was not too far away from her. The man was also quick enough to read Ashley's unstable movements. So that in one leap, his hand could immediately grab Ashley's body and pull her to him before she actually fell. But Jason's sudden and obviously unexpected catch made Ashley even more shocked in the blink of a
As the nurse who accompanied her took out the entire contents of the paper bag, Ashley finally understood why Jason's driver had said all those things earlier. The change of clothes contained not only tops and bottoms, but also sets of underwear. The most likely possibility was that the man might have watched as the store clerk selected these items for her. Therefore, he must have known that the clerk included underwear in the shopping list as well. And apparently, because he didn’t want Ashley to think anything or get the wrong idea, he finally tried to explain with various words that sounded very ambiguous.“I think I'll just change my outerwear,” Ashley said to the nurse.Aside from the fact that it would be too much trouble for her, and even though she herself felt an uncomfortable sensation from the red wine liquid that splashed and soaked deeply into her skin, just changing her underwear still wouldn't get rid of the sticky feeling. She would still have to shower, clean herself,
It was already dark outside as their car still drove slowly between the densely populated housing estates directed by the old woman. After going through many small alleys, they finally arrived in front of a small, old-fashioned house with a poorly maintained yard. Mr. Kwak and Jason got out and helped the old woman to walk. Meanwhile, Ashley, carrying a plastic bag of medicine, followed behind them with a slight limp. Behind the three people, Ashley peeked out. In front of the main door, Ashley caught a silhouette of a small child sitting curled up alone in the darkness. And as they all slowly walked into the house, the child stood on tiptoe and cried out loudly, “Grandma!”“Geez... why don't you turn on the light!” the old woman yelled back and tapped the boy who was her grandson on the shoulder. The boy immediately rushed over and began to shed tears. “Grandmother, why did you take so long to come home? “Ashley, cous,” she heard the greeting as her glass was clinked by another champagne glass. Her head turned toward the source of the voice. And her eyes caught a familiar figure she last saw around five years ago—as a surprise guest at her home in New Zealand. That girl had arrived in pieces then, heartbroken and a mess, if memory served her right. And her following days had been forcibly filled with listening to the girl's non-stop cry. The corners of Ashley's lips were drawn wide without realizing it. She warmly embraced the eccentric girl standing before her. Dressed in a bright yellow babydoll dress paired with a hot pink blazer, fifteen-centimeter heels of the same color, and an array of piercings sparkling on her face and ears. Sera Song, her cousin. Who had a similar fate to her, though their circumstances weren’t entirely the same. The one person in their family who could be just as annoyingly stubborn as she was. And yet, ironically, the only family member who always both
Ashley stopped and looked around, searching for a spot that could conceal her completely while still letting her hear their conversation. To her left, about three to four steps away from where Josh was, stood a large pillar. Ashley very carefully walked on tiptoe and hid behind it.“You mean I can't see you?” The girl's voice sounded raised. “You said you wouldn't leave me. But what? Look. What I was afraid of actually happened, right? All your words turned out to be a bunch of bullshit, huh, Josh?”“No, no. That's not what I meant. If they see you—” Josh paused for a moment. Instead of finishing his sentence, he remained silent for a long time.Ashley's neck spontaneously stretched longer, thinking her ears couldn't pick up their voices. But no matter how hard she focused her hearing, not a single sound could be heard.Even so, Ashley remained still, waiting like a statue. She even breathed in and out very slowly.“I was just afraid you'd get hurt,” Josh's voice reappeared. At this m
The look on Ashley's face was a complete mess. Something inside her head was boiling, and her chest felt like it was being beaten from within. Creating an agonizing sensation of pain. She was angry.Very angry, and hurt. She couldn't even bear to imagine what she looked like now. Because even without seeing her reflection, she could guess how messy and pathetic she looked.Ashley slowly tried to stand up. Fixing the top of her dress and brushing off the dust floor on her dress. As for her disheveled hair, she ran her fingers through it, ruffling and combing as best she could do.Only when she felt that her hair no longer stuck out too much, she stepped out from behind the partition. She avoided making eye contact with whoever it was and moved quickly to the elevator. This time, luck seemed to be on her side. No one else got into the elevator with her. And the hallway on the floor where her room was located was also empty. The first thing she did after making it into the room was run s

Another bystander, who was in a neutral state—not panicked or adrenaline-fueled-—would probably think of doing something more risk-minimizing than what Ashley was doing at the time. At least, whatever step was most likely to save the old woman, but also not hurt herself at the same time. As unlikely as it may be, however, people who intend to save someone from danger should understand to take the option with the least risk of harm.Even if the situation calls for the rescuer to sacrifice themselves, it should not be in the way like what Ashley just did.Instead, she jumped up and became a shield for the other person, and then afterward tried with great difficulty to carry the old woman’s body away from the car. Ashley walked out of their apartment building. Down the long street and the large park in front of her, then out through the main gate. With hurried steps—without her realizing it—her feet kept moving further and further away from the apartment neighborhood. The only thing that occupied her mind right now, other than getting away from Josh, was making her stomach full. That's why before she left the apartment without a word, all she did was grab her wallet. The disgust caused by Josh's long words made her immediately finish her lunch without wanting to linger there. Even though she had only eaten a few bites of the dish. But being at the same table with that man, while listening to his words, really made her very tired. It was as if the intentions of the two of them who wanted to try to find a way out and come to an agreement that was in line, could never happen—no matter how many talks were held or how long they looked for it.As she consciously put away her unfinished bowl of rice a
Ashley could immediately grasp the meaning of Josh's words just now."Why are you saying that? As if you care about my status? Even if I end up becoming a widow, that's my problem, not yours."Although Ashley knew all of Josh's long words were not completely wrong, she felt that she couldn't admit it too quickly. Her ego was currently provoked too much to be assuaged in the blink of an eye.It was true that when the idea of divorce came into her head, she was completely blinded by the anger and disappointment that attacked her in one day. It seemed natural that she would lose her mind at that time. Then when her mouth proposed an agreement, it was solely because her pride was being trampled on by Josh and his uncivilized girlfriend. So she instinctively searched for a solution to regain her strength and a way to keep her from getting even worse—and to benefit herself. And somehow divorce was the only thing that came to mind. But this proved that Josh's words were not wrong. Ashley di
