Chapter 30

Imagine the world knowing about my relationship with my teacher, who turned out to be a mafia gang. I would be an accomplice to whatever evil he had committed.

“I have to make a call to my father then.” She sighed, giving me a suspicious look. “But you have to tell me everything! No lies and secrets between us!”

I nodded hard as I looked ahead, and they were almost done with the car in front of us.

She made the call, her voice low as she discussed it with her father. My heart was racing, and I was panting, praying silently for God to save me the last time.

“Lower your head and lie low. They must not see you…” She mouthed to me, and I did as she said immediately.

It worked. I heard someone telling the cops to allow us to pass after the window was rolled down and they saw her. Whoever her father was, he must be a powerful man to make them give an exception to her.

We drove out and kept a distance away before I poked out my head, exhaling heavily.

“Thank you so much….” I sniffed, hugging her tight.

“You’re lucky. What if you had disagreed on following me home?" She chuckled before her eyes lowered at my bag.

“I don’t know what I would have done without you. You just saved my life. I owe you.”

“Why do I feel I also saved Leo’s life? The cops seemed to be looking for something linked to him. Is that what you are having?” She asked, and my heart stopped as I inhaled sharply.

Leo had told me to keep it away from everyone. Nobody must see what is in the bag. That was what he added in the message.

“I will tell you everything when we get home.”

I muttered, to buy myself some time to think.

Leo’s POV

They found the same evidence I was promised had been wiped. Not only that, they have information that only the gang knew.

Someone betrayed me.

My only hope was Diane, and since they went to get those files in my office, I had been struck with fear for the first time in my life, a kind of fear that had paralyzed me.

My blood was hot, rage boiling inside me as I hoped for a second chance to find this traitor and make him or her pay dearly with their life, but if the cops find what I locked inside that drawer, I will spend the rest of my life in jail.

What if she didn’t check her phone early because she was having a lecture? And now the cops are returning with the piles of evidence to destroy me.

Who did this to me?

Who told them all this?

If they get into that lock, it would be confirmed I killed Jaden’s son and Alan because even the pistol I used was there. Someone tipped them off, and now I had been caught off guard.

Although Diane would find out who I truly was if she was the first to get all that, it was better than the cops having it. She may hate me, but I know she won’t submit it over.

Diane will protect me.

The door creaked open, and the three cops with the commissioner stomped in. He grabbed my shirt in anger and frustration.

“I don’t know how you bastard did it, but I swear we will catch you sooner than you think. You may have escaped today, but how does it feel knowing we know a lot more about you than you think? Don’t worry; our eyes are on you, and I can assure you the next time you return here, the judge will have no choice but to put you in jail forever or even give you a death penalty!” He seethed, hissing.

I breathed in relief. Diane did it.

The cool breeze of the outside hit my skin, sending a refreshing sensation down my spine as I inhaled and exhaled a mouthful of air.

My eyes wandered around and back to the police station where I had just stepped out from. “That was so close…” I muttered under my breath, looking up to the sky.

Just then my phone rang, and as I glanced at the screen and saw it was my boss, a sense of gloom washed through me. I stared at the phone as it rang, and all I could feel was betrayal. It may not be him, but definitely someone who wanted to destroy me because I was leaving.

Only the members of the mafia knew about the secret leaked to the cops about me, so that means someone was fighting me, but what I couldn’t understand was why.

Was it because I was about to have my freedom and whoever that was didn’t want me to leave?

The phone rang again, and I answered, placing it on my ear.

“Hey, what is this I am just hearing? The cops came after you? What evidence did they say they got?!” He asked aloud, his voice clear and strong. I couldn’t tell if he was actually concerned or if he was disappointed his plan didn’t work.

Somehow I couldn’t just stop myself from suspecting him. He may sound cheerful, but deep down I feel he really didn’t like the sound of me leaving the gang even after I had sworn to keep every secret and go far away.

“They didn’t tell me what evidence they got from the murders, but they knew about my secret lock in the school and were about getting hold of it.” I replied, and he exclaimed in shock.

“What? Wait, so they got hold of your files and cellphones?”

“No, not yet… but I don’t think it will be long before they find out about me since someone in the gang is secretly sharing information. How could the cops possibly know about what I had kept a secret from anyone apart from the gang members?" I snorted, feeling my heart growing heavy in fury.

I wished there was a way to possibly get hold of that betrayal. I don’t care who it was. I will give my last breath to slit the throat and make them bleed to death.

“Are you being serious? Someone is betraying us! What the heck! But I’m glad they didn’t catch you. It would have been a real disaster,” he sighed. “So how did you really get rid of it before the cops could get it because you are on this mission alone without a partner? Tell me your tricks. Others in their mission will really need to learn from you.”

“It was merely luck. I felt like changing the location, and it turned out my instincts were right.” I replied, and there was silence between us for some minutes.

“When are you bringing the girl?” He asked with a different tone, deeper and more serious.

“This week. I can’t wait to leave so this traitor won’t have anything against me again. I just hope whoever it is doesn’t jeopardize my whole mission just to get rid of me. I will appreciate you filtering the group and trying to find out who this is.” I seethed, and he agreed dryly, his tone sounding unconcerned.

I was sure he wouldn't do anything. From now on, I just have to be very careful and make sure all my plans are only between me and myself.

Diane saved me today. She may not be able to do that again.
