Chapter 33

“No, I don’t.” I snapped, “Tell me what is going on! What did she read in those files that made her say what she said? Apart from you being a mafia member, what else is the reason she has to put you in jail?! What are you not telling me?!”

“Diane, the mistake we made is allowing those files to get to her hand. Now I have to find a way to get it without any negotiation because I don’t think she will offer any reasonable one.”

“Why do you think so? She is our friend!” I retorted, but he let out an empty chuckle.

“She is not our friend. Even if she is, now she has gone through that document, it is all over.”

“What did she read in it?” I asked. “Tell me!”

He paused, looking me in the eyes, filled with different emotions I couldn’t understand.

He tried saying something but clamped his lips shut, shaking his head. “I can’t tell you.” He breathed, and just then his phone beeped.

He checked and quickly distanced himself from me.

Leo’s POV

I really wonder where I went wrong in my plan. This would be the first time I had been in a situation where I couldn't think of any possible escape.

My eyes peered at the text message from Sofia, and I really wished I could get hold of her and strangle her to death.

As if being betrayed was not enough, Sofia has found out about being the last mission to get my freedom. It is in that file that she would be kidnapped and used to get her father then both would be killed at the end to avenge the death of our former boss which her father murdered.

I don’t know how she thought to read through everything.

“Meet me; let's talk. You have just an hour, and I know my guards will be active so come alone, and if you try anything funny, I will leak everything to Diane, tell the world of your relationship with her, and wrap it up with the cops having your files in their possession.”

Her message resonated in my head, and I hissed, rubbing my face before dipping my phone in my pocket before walking back to Diane, who was waiting for me patiently.

“What is happening? Leo, talk to me.” She said, and I opened the car door for her.

“Do you remember the mission I told you about where you ask if it involved killing someone?”

She nodded.

“The mission is not actual killing, but I am instructed to kidnap Sofia and send her to the mafia boss.”

“What!” She covered her mouth; her eyes widened as she took a quick step back, peering at me in shock.

“The job is expected to be done tomorrow. But things are going south right now, and it is worse at the moment because she has found out about the mission from that file.” I hissed in frustration while she stared at me like I was a ghost.

“What other thing don't I know about you? So what happens if they instruct you to kill me? I am afraid I shouldn't be anywhere near you.” Her voice was cracking, and tears welled up in her eyes as those eyes shimmered with intense pain. I could feel the disappointment, fear, and sadness in her tone.

“I can't hurt you. And you are right; you shouldn't be near me. It is dangerous.” I sighed, feeling my heart grow heavy as I said those words. She was the only person I wanted close to me.

“Did Sofia send you a message?” She asked, blinking sadly.

“Yes. She said I should meet her in an hour, so I am heading to the location.” I replied, and she shook her head, sniffing.

“What do you plan to do? She has what would destroy you. She has realized you are the enemy her father warned her about. Why did your gang ask for her? Does it mean all you did was just wait for her to get enrolled and kidnap her, not save her as you claimed?"

“Yes. I am sorry I lied to you.”

Just then her phone rang, and she flinched on seeing who the caller was.

“Who?” I asked curiously, but she snubbed me and answered the call. Her eyes widened, her jaw dropped as her body trembled like she was being electrocuted.

“Diane…” I called, but she didn't look at me.

“Who was that and what…” I tried holding her hand, but she recoiled away from me.

“Why am I never going to find the man who won't destroy me? You came as the perfect choice, but in the end, you are the worst. My life is fucked!” She burst into a sob, her face buried in her palms.

“At least can I know who that was and what…”

“It is Sofia! She said the same anonymous person that told her to check my bag and check the file had told her that I was an accomplice with you to get her kidnapped, lure her father, and then kill both of them.” She whimpered, breathing heavily.

“Anonymous?” I mouthed, my heart skipping a beat as I thought of the betrayer. That person was still selling me out.

“Leo, she told me her father will come for me also. Where am I going to run to?”

A wave of dread washed over me as what she said resonated in my head like an echoing bell.

Diane was shaking, her breath hitching with panic as she peered at me, waiting for an answer. This was obviously the first time she was being faced with a threat, and she did absolutely nothing wrong to anyone.

“Do you know anything about Sofia's father? Is he really going to come after me? What will he do to me? Kill me?” She stuttered, blinking as she placed her hand on her chest that was clearly pounding so fast and hard in sheer fear.

“Don’t worry, I will take care of it. Trust me, nobody will touch even a strand of your hair. I will kill whoever touches you.”

“All you do is kill!” She screamed in my face, pushing me away from her as I tried to touch her. “Get off me! I don’t want to have anything to do with a monster like you! Leo, you lied to me. Sofia was like a sister to me, and you were going to kill her! Fuck you!”

Her voice echoed in the silence of the night as she turned and ran back into the house.
