Chapter 11: Willa

I finally slept. Not just the exhausted sleep from healing or the injury-induced oblivion of the first day I was here. I actually laid down on the bed, covered myself in blankets, and fell asleep. Even more, it was a dreamless sleep. I wasn’t visited by the recurring nightmare that plagued my nights since I was nine.I was still on the edge of consciousness when a tingling sensation registered in my dazed mind. It moved from my shoulder to my neck, then along my jaw. I hummed approval as I leaned into the pleasant feeling. It intensified as I was pulled further out of sleep. My eyes fluttered open, meeting Ferrin’s bright blue gaze. We both stilled, holding on to the moment for reasons I couldn’t explain.I broke away first. Sitting up in the bed as Ferrin removed his hand from my cheek.“I’m sorry to wake you,” he said softly. “I’ve got a busy day today, but I said I’d let you call your father this morning.”He held out a slim, black cell phone to me. I quickly grabbed it, holding it

Chapter 12: Ferrin

Yesterday was no better than the day before. But I had managed to keep myself from going to see Willa last night. I didn’t drag myself away from crop reports and import/export proposals until nearly two in the morning, and I wasn’t going to wake her. Sleeping in my own bed was out of the question, though. If I couldn’t be with her, I would at least stay close, and I didn’t really care because I was actually able to get some sleep.Miranda had already brought some of my things to the lower suite. I had showered and dressed and was heading to my office when I came across Shawn, one of Willa’s security guards, on the stairs. He stopped and greeted me respectfully. He was heading up as I was going down. It must have been a shift change. As he passed, I noticed he was carrying a bag. A bag that seemed a little too big to have on a security shift.I tried to brush it off, but by the time I was at the bottom of the stairs, my curiosity was overpowering. I mind-linked Miranda, asking if she h

Chapter 13: Ferrin

Austin was already waiting outside when I arrived. I didn’t bother to greet him as I pushed through the door.“I want Shawn removed from Willa’s protection detail,” I ordered.“He told me you kicked him off his shift,” Austin said, crossing his arms over his chest. “Why do you want him off? He’s one of the best men we have.“I don’t care. I want him gone,” I spat.“No.”“What?” Why was it so easy for everyone to tell me no all of a sudden?“We can’t take him off without replacing him with someone else. That’s another person involved in this mess. So, unless you can tell me how he has failed at his job, he stays.”I glared at him. I realized that Shawn hadn’t actually done anything wrong. He hadn’t even touched Willa. I suppose he was only doing what he was instructed to do. I started to calm down a bit when I noticed the look on Austin’s face. He was doing nothing to hide the smug smirk. I was about to say something when Damen entered the office.“What’s going on?” he asked, looking b

Chapter 14: Willa

I was pissed at Ferrin’s behavior, but I also felt a sense of satisfaction. My plan had only been to ingratiate myself to the guards so I could coax information out of them, maybe talk one of them into getting me a phone. While I was pretty sure that was out the window, I made sure that Ferrin knew I wasn’t going to make it easy for him.But I was worried about Shawn. I didn’t want to get him, or any of the others, in trouble. I felt bad that I may have cost him his job. If I did, I would do whatever it took to make it right. After I had calmed down and was sure that Ferrin had left, I went to the suite door and knocked. No one responded. I knocked again. Still nothing. He had actually done it. He ordered them not to speak to me.That son of a bitch.Maybe I had let things go too far with that make-out session. But shit, I would be lying if I didn’t say it took way too much resolve to push him off me. I wanted to leave him frustrated and angry. To know that he couldn’t control or mani

Chapter 15: Ferrin

I bounded down the stairs, wanting to get this over with so I could get back to Willa. I didn’t know what Damen wanted, but he said it was important. If it wasn’t, I would have told him to bugger off. I was finally making progress with Willa. I didn’t want to risk that by leaving her too long.I was on the landing one floor down when Damen came around the bend. I nodded toward the suite I had been staying in since we brought Willa here.I shut the door behind us once we entered. “This better be good, Damen.”He looked back at me, taking me in for a minute. I thought he hid a smile, but whatever expression I saw was gone before I could read it.“Dante called. I told him I’d get you. He’s waiting for us to call him back.” Damen pulled a cell phone from his pocket and tapped on the screen. I heard ringing as we waited for the call to connect.“Rhodes,” Dante’s voice came on the line.“Dante, I’ve got Ferrin here. What’s the update?”“I just made it to Moonacre. I’ve scoured through the n

Chapter 16: Ferrin

I met with Austin in his quarters to plan the next phase of the operation. We wanted to find the identity of the mole soon, but it was important that they didn’t know we were on to them. We needed them to lead us to anyone who was working against us. We were hoping that whatever Larkin sent us — if he sent us anything — would give us a good lead. We set up a strategy for where to go from there.I had mind-linked Miranda on my way to see Austin and asked her to make something special for Willa for dinner and that I would be joining her. I had pulled her into my office before reaching out to Willa’s security guards and told her everything that was going on. I shouldn’t have been surprised that she had already figured out Willa was my mate. She had seen enough in her lifetime to recognize the mate bond in a second. I was elated when she gave her approval of Willa. She was happy to comply with my request, and I had worked on timing everything right. I was almost up the stairs when she

Chapter 17: Willa

I was laughing as I wiggled against his grip. Then our eyes met and we both sobered up. Both realizing the intimate position we were in. My breath hitched in anticipation, wondering what he would do next. Knowing what I wanted him to do while acknowledging that I shouldn’t.But I was finding it hard to care. This had been one of the best nights of my life. Then it happened. His lips were on mine in a fevered kiss which quickly deepened as we reveled in the taste of one another. Ferrin’s fingers intertwined with mine, holding both my hands with one of his. The other slipped down my side all the way to my thigh, catching the back of my knee to lift it up and around his waist. His mouth moved to my neck, licking and nipping along my skin. His hand traveled back up, slipping under my shirt, sending electricity straight to my core as he brushed against my bare skin.He palmed my breast, and I moaned as he tweaked my nipple through the fabric of my bra. I felt my abs clench as the need betw

Chapter 18: Willa

I woke up to the tingling sensation I was slowly beginning to crave. I opened my eyes to see Ferrin sitting over me. He had a worried expression. I sat up in the bed.“What’s wrong?” I managed to croak, my voice still waking up.“Shh,” Ferrin soothed. “I didn’t mean to startle you. I’m sorry.”I relaxed a little, but the look on his face still had me on edge. He sighed and grabbed my hand, rubbing his thumb along the back.“I have to go out of town today. I may be gone until tomorrow,” he said.“Oh,” I replied, grappling with the relief and disappointment that I suddenly felt simultaneously. “Can I ask where you’re going?”He gave me a soft smile. “I invested in a business venture with a company out in Paslow. Right now, it’s a private endeavor, but if it works out, I can take it to the council. It could be beneficial for the whole kingdom. But they seem to have run into some problems. I need to go and straighten some things out.”“Okay,” I said with a soft smile. I didn’t really know

Chapter 19: Ferrin

Four days.It had been four days since I had seen Willa. What should have been a two-day trip to assess the progress of an investment had turned into a peace negotiation. I hated having to leave her after the night we’d had. It had been perfect. Well, nearly perfect. When she asked me to stay with her, it felt like she didn’t think that would ever happen again.I had taken the helicopter back home and was practically running across the castle grounds. I felt like a madman, almost desperate to get back to my mate. There was something in the feeling that had me on edge. It wasn’t just the separation that was tearing at my insides. I had felt it more and more the closer I got to home. Something wasn’t right. When I reached the main entrance and saw Miranda waiting at the door, I knew something was wrong. My heart stopped at the look on her face. It was etched with worry, adding years that made her look more her age.“What’s wrong? What’s happened?” I demanded, rushing to her.She opened

Chapter 20: Ferrin

I had Miranda help me get Willa into her pajamas and out of her robe without waking her. I wasn’t surprised, knowing she hadn’t slept for days and the emotional toll her body had endured. I tucked us under the covers and lay next to her, holding her against my chest, too afraid to stop touching her. I could tell the contact was helping, even in her unconscious state. I wasn’t about to take that away again. I stayed there with her for hours. I had drifted off when I was awoken by a familiar voice.“Holy shit.”I opened my eyes to see Rebekah standing by the bed.“And ow,” she said, holding her hand to her heart. “You’ve got a hell of a lot of explaining to do, big brother.”“Yeah, yeah,” I griped as I sat up, gently prying my fingers from Willa’s. “There would be less explaining if you hadn’t decided to live across the country,” I teased.I looked over to see Miranda standing by the dining table. I nodded for her to come and sit with Willa as I climbed out of bed. Rebekah came around t
