I bounded down the stairs, wanting to get this over with so I could get back to Willa. I didn’t know what Damen wanted, but he said it was important. If it wasn’t, I would have told him to bugger off. I was finally making progress with Willa. I didn’t want to risk that by leaving her too long.
I was on the landing one floor down when Damen came around the bend. I nodded toward the suite I had been staying in since we brought Willa here.
I shut the door behind us once we entered. “This better be good, Damen.”
He looked back at me, taking me in for a minute. I thought he hid a smile, but whatever expression I saw was gone before I could read it.
“Dante called. I told him I’d get you. He’s waiting for us to call him back.” Damen pulled a cell phone from his pocket and tapped on the screen. I heard ringing as we waited for the call to connect.
“Rhodes,” Dante’s voice came on the line.
“Dante, I’ve got Ferrin here. What’s the update?”
“I just made it to Moonacre. I’ve scoured through the newspapers from around the time of Melanie’s death. I gathered some information that may be useful, but nothing that tells us anything just yet. I’m meeting with the overnight medical examiner in a few hours. We have a history. I’m hoping I can get my hands on the autopsy report.”
“What information did you find interesting?” I asked, wanting something to take to Willa.
“Mostly, there are reference details, but there was one article that had something suspicious. It stated that Melanie was thrown from the vehicle. Most coverage did. However, they printed a photo of the vehicle,” Dante said. “People are most often thrown through the windshield. In the photo, the glass was fractured but intact. No one went through the front of the vehicle.”
“It’s not much,” Damen said.
“No, but it’s enough to give reason for suspicion. And it’s something to corroborate the story you guys have.”
“Okay,” I said. “Make sure you send me a copy of that autopsy report when you get it. And let us know anything else you find.”
“Of course,” Dante replied. “I’ll be in touch.”
The call disconnected.
Damen tucked the phone in his pocket. “That’s not the only thing. You have a visitor in your office.”
I didn’t like the tone of his voice. “Who is it?”
“Desiree Boucher.”
I grimaced. “Get rid of her. I have no interest in speaking with her.”
“She’s not alone,” Damen added. “She has Lord Larkin with her.”
I cursed under my breath. “Do you know what they want?”
I didn’t miss the glance Damen shot upward toward Willa’s suite, and it made my gut tighten.
“Damen?”
“They mentioned they heard some rumors but refused to elaborate.”
“Fuck,” I said, pushing a hand through my hair.
“Yeah,” Damen agreed. “And you need to change, and maybe shower, before you go anywhere near that office.”
I gave him a confused look.
A smile broke across his face, and he slapped my shoulder. “You wreak of her, man. Her scent is all over you.”
He chuckled as he left the room. I breathed in. He was right. I could smell Willa’s intoxicating scent on my clothes. A mix of citrus, gardenia, and something that was just uniquely Willa. I smiled, drinking in how right it felt. But I had to sober up quickly. I headed to the bathroom and begrudgingly stripped down. I hated having to wash her scent off me, but I couldn’t risk it.
As I stepped out of the shower, a realization hit me.
When Desiree found me in the hall the other night…
I kissed Willa for the first time that night. I had been with her for a while. Had Desiree caught her scent on me then? Panic started to rise in my chest. I dressed quickly and marched to my office. Now eager to hear what they had to say.
Lord Larkin was an elder council member. While he held a particular loyalty to my father, it seemed that loyalty didn’t transfer to me after his death. I lost count of the ways he has challenged me in the fifteen years I’ve been on the throne. I still hadn’t figured out the reason for his ire toward me. I was arguably more progressive than my father, but that still didn’t seem enough to warrant Larkin’s distrust.
I braced myself for the exchange that was about to occur as I pushed through my office doors. Lord Larkin stood from a chair while Desiree didn’t bother to lift herself from where she was leaning on my desk.
“Lord Larkin, Lady Boucher,” I greeted them. “How can I be of service today?”
“Your Majesty,” Larkin bowed. The sour look on his face told me he wasn’t happy about whatever he was here to discuss. “We’re here to address some disturbing rumors circulating through the castle.”
“And the village,” Desiree added lazily.
“Oh, what rumors may those be?” I asked, making my way behind my desk and taking a seat.
“The first is in regard to lycans crossing into werewolf territory. A group has been spotted on more than one occasion coming and going from Avilvale lands,” Larkin said.
No, they hadn’t. I had made sure of that. But I was glad to see he took the bait. The “rumor” he was referring to was an exercise. There had been several attempts to sabotage some of my more lucrative projects over the past three years. We suspected we had a mole feeding information to some of the council members, but we weren’t sure who specifically was involved. Larkin just gave me two names to add to the top of the list.
“That is disturbing news. I can assure you, there is nothing of the sort happening at my command. What kind of details can you give me? I’ll have to look into this,” I said, feigning concern.
“I can send you the witness accounts first thing tomorrow,” he replied, looking a little suspicious.
“Very good.” I leaned back in my chair. “And the other rumor?”
“Yes,” he said, glancing at Desiree, who was still perched on the edge of my desk. “There is another rumor that you have taken a lover.”
My brow furrowed. “And if I had?” He was taken aback by my blatant response while Desiree was shooting daggers at me with her eyes. I continued before either of them could speak. “Since when is an unmated king taking a lover such a scandal? Even more important, when did it become your business? Or any business of the council?”
“You know very well why it is our business,” Desiree said, crossing her arms over her chest as she finally stood. “There are expectations of you, Ferrin. You have a duty to provide the kingdom with a Luna and a legitimate heir. Neither of which you have delivered.”
“You are past the age of youthful dalliances, my king,” Larkin insisted. “It is the secrecy of this… liaison that worries us. We fear you have taken up with someone highly unsuitable. That is our concern.”
“Well, then,” I said, “I guess it is a good thing that it is just a rumor, and nothing of the sort is going on.”
Desiree scoffed. “Like hell, it isn’t. You’ve been sneaking up to the tower every chance you get. You’re hiding someone up there. I could smell her on you.”
I plastered a smile on my face that did not reach my eyes. “I already informed you that I am renovating the top two levels for my sister and her family, Lady Boucher.”
“That’s a lie,” she snapped. “There hasn’t been a single worker or any materials going in or out of there.”
“That tower is over six hundred years old,” I began, getting impatient with her meddling. “It hasn’t seen any structural renovations since it was retrofitted with plumbing and electricity. I want to ensure the work is done safely, seeing as it will be housing my niece and nephew — the current heirs should I fail to provide any. I’ve hired the leading expert in historical architecture. She has been staying up there as she creates the plans. It is most likely her scent that you detected on me. And I can assure you, she is not my lover.”
She glared at me, not believing a word of it. But I didn’t care at that moment. I stood, pushing my aura out toward them both. I wanted to make sure they understood I was serious about my next words.
“None of this information is any of your or the council’s business. I am clearing the air out of courtesy. The council may have a say in how I govern my kingdom, but this property belongs solely to my family and my family alone. You have no say in what I do in these walls.” I looked between the two. “So, whatever inquiries or snooping you have done in my home — stops now. Do we have an understanding?”
They both began to fidget under the weight of my authority. An alpha’s command could not be denied. It could be painful, even deadly, to try. As the lycan king, mine was more potent than any other. I wasn’t even putting a fraction of the force I could behind my words, but their discomfort was clear. Finally, they responded with their understanding, tilting their heads to expose their necks to me in submission.
“Good. Now, go. We have nothing more to discuss.”
They left the room, and I lowered myself into my desk chair. That should keep them from interfering again for a while, but I doubted it would quell their suspicions. I would need to put some kind of plan for introducing Willa in place soon.
I paused at the thought for a moment, wondering when I had made the decision to officially bring her into this mess. It didn’t take long to admit to myself that it was never really a choice for me. Guilt tugged at me as I realized I had condemned Willa to a lifetime of danger the moment I laid eyes on her.
I would do whatever it took to make sure it was worth it. It was time I put more effort into making my mate happy.
But first, I needed to speak with Austin about Lord Larkin and our little exercise.
I met with Austin in his quarters to plan the next phase of the operation. We wanted to find the identity of the mole soon, but it was important that they didn’t know we were on to them. We needed them to lead us to anyone who was working against us. We were hoping that whatever Larkin sent us — if he sent us anything — would give us a good lead. We set up a strategy for where to go from there.I had mind-linked Miranda on my way to see Austin and asked her to make something special for Willa for dinner and that I would be joining her. I had pulled her into my office before reaching out to Willa’s security guards and told her everything that was going on. I shouldn’t have been surprised that she had already figured out Willa was my mate. She had seen enough in her lifetime to recognize the mate bond in a second. I was elated when she gave her approval of Willa. She was happy to comply with my request, and I had worked on timing everything right. I was almost up the stairs when she
I was laughing as I wiggled against his grip. Then our eyes met and we both sobered up. Both realizing the intimate position we were in. My breath hitched in anticipation, wondering what he would do next. Knowing what I wanted him to do while acknowledging that I shouldn’t.But I was finding it hard to care. This had been one of the best nights of my life. Then it happened. His lips were on mine in a fevered kiss which quickly deepened as we reveled in the taste of one another. Ferrin’s fingers intertwined with mine, holding both my hands with one of his. The other slipped down my side all the way to my thigh, catching the back of my knee to lift it up and around his waist. His mouth moved to my neck, licking and nipping along my skin. His hand traveled back up, slipping under my shirt, sending electricity straight to my core as he brushed against my bare skin.He palmed my breast, and I moaned as he tweaked my nipple through the fabric of my bra. I felt my abs clench as the need betw
I woke up to the tingling sensation I was slowly beginning to crave. I opened my eyes to see Ferrin sitting over me. He had a worried expression. I sat up in the bed.“What’s wrong?” I managed to croak, my voice still waking up.“Shh,” Ferrin soothed. “I didn’t mean to startle you. I’m sorry.”I relaxed a little, but the look on his face still had me on edge. He sighed and grabbed my hand, rubbing his thumb along the back.“I have to go out of town today. I may be gone until tomorrow,” he said.“Oh,” I replied, grappling with the relief and disappointment that I suddenly felt simultaneously. “Can I ask where you’re going?”He gave me a soft smile. “I invested in a business venture with a company out in Paslow. Right now, it’s a private endeavor, but if it works out, I can take it to the council. It could be beneficial for the whole kingdom. But they seem to have run into some problems. I need to go and straighten some things out.”“Okay,” I said with a soft smile. I didn’t really know
Four days.It had been four days since I had seen Willa. What should have been a two-day trip to assess the progress of an investment had turned into a peace negotiation. I hated having to leave her after the night we’d had. It had been perfect. Well, nearly perfect. When she asked me to stay with her, it felt like she didn’t think that would ever happen again.I had taken the helicopter back home and was practically running across the castle grounds. I felt like a madman, almost desperate to get back to my mate. There was something in the feeling that had me on edge. It wasn’t just the separation that was tearing at my insides. I had felt it more and more the closer I got to home. Something wasn’t right. When I reached the main entrance and saw Miranda waiting at the door, I knew something was wrong. My heart stopped at the look on her face. It was etched with worry, adding years that made her look more her age.“What’s wrong? What’s happened?” I demanded, rushing to her.She opened
I had Miranda help me get Willa into her pajamas and out of her robe without waking her. I wasn’t surprised, knowing she hadn’t slept for days and the emotional toll her body had endured. I tucked us under the covers and lay next to her, holding her against my chest, too afraid to stop touching her. I could tell the contact was helping, even in her unconscious state. I wasn’t about to take that away again. I stayed there with her for hours. I had drifted off when I was awoken by a familiar voice.“Holy shit.”I opened my eyes to see Rebekah standing by the bed.“And ow,” she said, holding her hand to her heart. “You’ve got a hell of a lot of explaining to do, big brother.”“Yeah, yeah,” I griped as I sat up, gently prying my fingers from Willa’s. “There would be less explaining if you hadn’t decided to live across the country,” I teased.I looked over to see Miranda standing by the dining table. I nodded for her to come and sit with Willa as I climbed out of bed. Rebekah came around t
Ferrin walked his sister out of the room. She was right when she said I would feel tired. I was exhausted, but I felt good. At least I felt better than I had the past couple days. I pushed myself out of the chair and started moving them back to their place at the table. Ferrin came up behind me and grabbed my waist.“No, you’re going back to bed,” he said as he pulled the chair from my hands.“I’m fine, Ferrin,” I protested. I wasn’t ready to go to sleep. I needed to feel like I was doing something.Ferrin buried his face in my neck, wrapping his arms around my middle. He took a deep breath. “But I’m not,” he said gently. “You scared the hell out of me.”I leaned against him. “I’m sorry. That’s never happened to me before.”He nodded, lifting up to kiss me on the temple. “It’s our bond. The stronger it gets, the stronger we both get. I’m so sorry, Willa. I should have seen this coming. I should have known this would happen.”“You couldn’t have known. This is all new for both of us.” I
I opened my eyes slowly, bracing myself against the sunlight shining through the window. I stretched my arms, rolling over to find the other side of the bed empty. The clock on the nightstand told me I had slept almost the entire morning. It was almost noon. I heard the bathroom door open and turned to see Ferrin walking out. I bit my lip as I looked him up and down. He had just gotten out of the shower and was towel drying his hair, another towel wrapped low around his waist. It was the first time I got to really see him, to admire how damn attractive he really was. I sat up in the bed, not wanting to miss anything as he moved through the room. He reached into the closet and pulled out a shirt, catching me watching when he turned back to the room. A cheeky grin spread across his face as he moved in my direction.“Good morning, gorgeous,” he said, leaning down to give me a kiss.“Mmm, I could say the same to you,” I replied. He chuckled as he went to the dresser and pulled a pair of b
I was chewing on my lip as I thought about what he was saying. I wasn’t sure how I felt about the idea of having a constant entourage. Was he going to have people following me around all the time? That seemed a bit restrictive. I just wanted to see my family and friends. I didn’t want a parade of babysitters.Ferrin tugged my lip from between my teeth, lifting my chin as he started pushing me to the bathroom.“It’s only temporary, Willa. Once you get out of here and get settled in, you’ll be where you were meant to be. No more isolation and plenty of purpose, okay?” he asked, kissing my forehead when I nodded. “Now, go take your shower. I’ll be back soon.”I took my time in the shower, thinking about how much my life had changed in such a short time. I know that finding your fated mate often turns your life upside down, but dang. Even my dad didn’t have to deal with this much change. He may have never been a part of pack life before, but at least he grew up around them enough to gain
Something was really bothering her. And it wasn’t the same anger or disappointment I had felt from her the night before. No, she seemed… nervous around me. Almost scared.I had never seen Willa be timid. I didn’t think she even had it in her.But whatever was causing these feelings, they were only directed at me. She had acted normally toward Rebekah and warmly toward Henry and the kids. She was a picture of sweetness and belonging. My gut clenched, imagining what could possibly have her acting so distant from me. I hated this. I needed to be close to her more than ever right now, and this is when she decided to avoid me. Frustration and even a little anger started to creep up on me. I went to the office there in my apartment and found the carafe of bourbon. I poured a glass and took a few minutes to drink it before I went back to Willa’s room.I gently turned the knob. Opening it, I found Willa standing in front of the full-length mirror in the corner of the room. I could see her fac
I didn’t sleep much longer after Willa left. The unease and anxiety that had been growing through the night had quickly seeped back into my bones. They had lessened for those few short hours I was able to hold her. But when she left, it was like a premonition of what would happen if I screwed everything up — if I made the wrong decision. We had gone through every single detail in Billy’s file that night. Scouring over every piece of information. We had relied heavily on Dante’s expertise, hoping he could shed better light on what we were looking over. With each passing hour, his thoughts were following the same path as Willa’s father’s. And with each passing hour, my mood soured even more. By two in the morning, Dante was so suspicious of what was going on that Damen insisted I fill him in on everything.I had reluctantly complied at the time, but Dante said this information did fill in a lot of gaps in the information. He went over everything again once he knew more of what we were l
Rebekah was right about the gazebo being a good place to escape and get some privacy away from the castle. We spent a couple hours sitting there while she told me about the people I would be meeting at my introduction dinner. She pulled up pictures from her phone to help me recognize them. By the time we were done, she had gone through over forty people of various importance, and I was feeling a little overwhelmed. But I also felt more confident about the upcoming ordeal. We decided to move on so that she could show me around the grounds a little bit more before we had to meet her family when they arrived. We were walking along the hedges when she asked me what I planned to wear to the dinner. I froze up when she asked.“Crap,” I said. “I actually have to think about that, don’t I?”She laughed softly at my mortified expression. “It’s okay. I would love to help you get ready.”“Okay,” I said with a grateful sigh of relief.“Don’t worry,” she said. “You’ll do just fine. And I highly do
I was really getting tired of having to hide in rooms whenever Ferrin was acting like a jerk. I didn’t regret my decision to stay with him, but all this was becoming a bit suffocating. I couldn’t handle it if Ferrin suddenly started keeping things from me.I paced around the room for a while before I changed into my pajamas and tried to go to sleep. But I only ended up tossing and turning for a couple of hours. Finally, I let out a frustrated huff and threw the blankets off of me. I was still frustrated with Ferrin, and I was mad that I missed him, but I was also worried. It was the kind of worry that just sat in the peripheral. You know it’s there, but you just don’t know why.But then again, we both had a lot to worry about right now. So, I was probably just overreacting.I climbed out of bed and made my way through the joining bathroom and through to Ferrin’s bedroom. I paused a moment to breathe in his scent, which was all over the place. I quickly started to relax. I crawled unde
Not long after Ferrin left, Miranda came in with a load of groceries to stock our little kitchen. She also gave me my phone. Apparently, one of the border guards found it in the woods where Ferrin “saved” me from the attack because it was ringing non-stop. Austin swung by and picked it up before heading back to the castle behind us.It was dead by now, so I popped it on the charger before helping Miranda make some sandwiches. I convinced her to stay and eat with me, knowing she probably hadn’t taken a break all day.“So, what are you going to do with your extra week of paid vacation,” I asked, moving on to my second sandwich after inhaling the first. I definitely must have been healing faster because I was starving.Miranda laughed. “Ferrin said you insisted he gave me a raise. Although it was entirely unnecessary.”“It was absolutely necessary. You have done so much for me since I got here,” I said bluntly, “and I can’t imagine this place would run a fraction as smoothly without you,
Arlo was still waiting outside when I left our quarters, but his expression was a bit less jovial than it was a few moments ago.“What did you do to get Damen’s knickers in such a bunch?”“What makes you think I did anything?” I asked as he followed me. Obviously, Damen had mind-linked him as well.“He told me I better get my arse to your office to make sure you haven’ done somethin’ royally stupid,” Arlo replied.Honestly, I didn’t know what I could have done. Unless this was about last night, but all my thoughts of sending Willa away had completely passed now. Everything had been going smoothly since we returned, so I had no idea what was going on. And it was pissing me off as well.I stormed into my office to find Damen and Austin waiting, both looking particularly displeased about something.“What the hell is all this about?” I asked angrily.“You tell us,” Damen said, dropping an accordion folder on my desk dramatically. It only took an instant to recognize it, and I cursed under
I picked Willa’s dress off the couch and helped her slip it up her arms. She went to start buttoning it up, but we both quickly realized there were several buttons missing. I chuckled as her shoulders fell with a sigh, giving me a disappointed look.“Oops,” I said with a shrug, not even about to hide my grin.“If you keep this up, I’m going to run out of things to wear real quick,” she said, shoving my arm playfully.“That’s not exactly an incentive to be more careful,” I replied.“Ha ha,” she said. “But I don’t have any…”I stopped her with a look.“Miranda.” She caught on quickly, shaking her head with a grin.“I told her to put everything in your room for now. We’ll move it whenever you want.”“She really does deserve a raise, you know?” Willa said as she started towards the bedroom.“Already taken care of,” I called after her. “Plus an extra week of paid vacation.”She turned around, backing into the room without skipping a step. “That’s my man,” she said with a wink before closin
I looked at him skeptically. “A rogue werewolf from Avilvale? Even keeping my alpha nature from them, I don’t see them being too happy about that.”“There will be those who will have an opinion,” Ferrin said casually. “But not all of them will hold it against you once they meet you. The council isn’t full of old lycans who are stuck in their ways. We have several that are around my age or have always been on the more progressive side, like my father and me.”“Like Lady Boucher?” I asked, not entirely successful in hiding the bitterness in my voice. I don’t know why she kept popping into my head since I had met her in the hallway. She just made me feel off.“No, the Boucher family tends to lean toward the old ways where lycans’ status was definitively superior.”“I’m surprised the council isn’t insisting you mate with her,” I said.Ferrin made a face. “They know any chance of that ever happening died a long time ago.”“What do you mean?” I pulled away, jealousy spiking through me. “Fer
My chest was swollen with pride in my mate. All I wanted to do was get her behind closed doors and show her how damn perfect she was. I was annoyed that Desiree had the audacity to speak to her Luna the way she had. By all rights, I should have been pissed. And I was at first. But after watching Willa eviscerate her in such a concise, effective, and tactful way, I couldn’t bring myself to care that much anymore.I thought back to that night I had imagined what would happen when the two of them met. I was in no way disappointed. And now, knowing Willa’s skill in a fight, Desiree would learn quickly not to disrespect my mate again. We finally made it to our private quarters, but we still had an entourage that I only felt a little guilty about wanting to get rid of as soon as possible. But I really did want Rebekah to take a look at Willa’s leg. And Damen, Miranda, and I had to discuss what was going to happen next so Willa could get an idea of what to expect over the next few days.My q
