I met with Austin in his quarters to plan the next phase of the operation. We wanted to find the identity of the mole soon, but it was important that they didn’t know we were on to them. We needed them to lead us to anyone who was working against us. We were hoping that whatever Larkin sent us — if he sent us anything — would give us a good lead. We set up a strategy for where to go from there.

I had mind-linked Miranda on my way to see Austin and asked her to make something special for Willa for dinner and that I would be joining her. I had pulled her into my office before reaching out to Willa’s security guards and told her everything that was going on. I shouldn’t have been surprised that she had already figured out Willa was my mate. She had seen enough in her lifetime to recognize the mate bond in a second. I was elated when she gave her approval of Willa.

She was happy to comply with my request, and I had worked on timing everything right. I was almost up the stairs when she mind-linked to me that everything was ready. I took the last few steps two at a time, nodding to the guards before entering the room. Willa was standing by the couch, looking thoroughly puzzled as Miranda set up an array of food on the coffee table. I heard Miranda telling her it was a surprise when they both looked up at me. Miranda straightened with a smile, tucking the empty tray under her arm.

“Your Majesty,” she said with a bow before retreating from the room without another word.

Willa stood in place, looking at me as she waited for me to say something.

She had showered since I left. Her auburn curls were still damp as they fell over her shoulders. She was wearing a loose button-up top that accentuated her full breasts and slim waist. Her jean shorts gave me a great view of her toned legs. Legs that had been flashing images through my mind all day of how well they would fit around my shoulders, waist, and anywhere in between.

She was gorgeous.

But it was her eyes that always seemed to ensnare me. Those big, hazel eyes with brilliant sparks of green and copper. I didn’t even realize I had closed the distance between us until I felt the tingle of electricity that cascaded through me whenever we touched. My hands had found their way to her hips, pulling her to me as hers rested on my arms.

I leaned in and my mouth met hers. I snaked my arms around her, pushing my fingers into her hair, gripping the base of her head as I deepened the kiss. Her lips parted for me as her arms went around my neck. Her tongue danced along with mine, and in seconds my hard length was pressed against her belly. She moaned softly and I almost lost all control. I managed to pull away, reminding myself that wasn’t what tonight was about.

We were both breathing heavily. Willa wouldn’t meet my eyes, staring into my chest as she worked to gather herself. I tipped her chin up to look at me.

“You okay?” I asked softly.

She nodded with a small smile. I returned the grin and kissed her forehead before taking her hand and leading her around to sit on the sofa.

“Okay,” I said, picking up the bag with Shawn’s DVDs in it. “What was Shawn suggesting you watch first?”

“Um, the Spiderman trilogy,” she said, pulling her legs up under her to get comfortable.

I paused my search through the bag and looked at her. “Wait, you’ve never seen Spiderman?”

Her cheeks flushed and she let out a shy laugh. “If it was made within the last twenty years and it’s not a kids’ movie, I probably haven’t seen it.”

“Hold on, what?”

“Rogue, remember,” she said, pointing to herself. “We rarely had extra money to spend.”

“What about your ex?” The word was bitter in my mouth. “Didn’t he ever take you on a movie date?”

“You can’t really get away with taking a rogue in public. There were some things we could manage by masking my scent, but the movies — pressed elbow to elbow — was not one of them.”

He had never taken her out in public. My anger flared and my hands fisted, but guilt quickly replaced it as I remembered I was doing the same thing. I cleared my throat and moved on. If she hadn’t seen any movies, I wanted to find something she would love. I listed some categories and had her narrow down her interests. I decided on a pirate movie. It wasn’t available in the selection Shawn sent, but we could stream it instead.

I got it up and ready to play on the TV before grabbing a plate and starting to load it with food. I had Miranda provide an array of junk food fit for a home movie night, and she definitely delivered. There was anything from pizza to wings to boxes of candy and popcorn. I made sure to add anything Willa said she liked or would like to try before handing the plate to her.

“I’m not going to be able to eat all of this,” she insisted as I started on my own plate.

I shrugged. “With how good the cooking is here, you never know. It’s a miracle I’m not four-hundred pounds myself,” I said with a wink.

She let out a laugh as she broke into a smile, and I thought my heart would explode. Once we were content with our selections, I pulled another remote from the drawer to turn off the overhead lights and dim the lamps. I clicked play, and we settled in for the movie.

Willa was right that she couldn’t finish her plate, but she came pretty close. She teased me for going back for seconds, making us both chuckle. By halfway through, we were both finished and she was engrossed in the film. I reached over and pulled her to my side. She tucked right in without hesitation, draping my arm over her as she leaned against my chest, and I swore I was in heaven.

I didn’t even know if she realized she had done it. But that meant she was comfortable with me. Content. At that moment, she felt safe.

We stayed like that for the rest of the movie. When the credits started to roll, I thought she may have fallen asleep. I kissed her hair and whispered her name. She looked up at me.

I ran my fingers through her hair. “Are you tired?”

“A little,” she said with a smile.

“Do you want me to go?” I asked, dreading she would say yes but ready to leave if she wanted me to.

She thought for a moment and shook her head. “No.”

I wanted to kiss her more than anything, but I settled for pulling her tighter into my arms. She settled back against my chest, and I continued to run my fingers through her hair.

“So, about this Jason asshole,” I said teasingly.

She took a deep breath, and I could practically feel her roll her eyes. “What about him?”

“Did he hurt you?”

She snickered a little. “Only in the we were young and stupid kind of way. A lot of the pack kids go through a rogue phase when they’re teenagers. You know, rebelling against their parents, wondering what it’s like to live outside the pack. I just happened to be his.”

That didn’t sit well with me. It took an effort to suppress the anger and jealousy rising. “It sounds like he used you.”

“Nah,” she said, tracing her fingers along mine absently. “We both kind of had an itch to scratch. I was seventeen when we met. I wasn’t in the greatest of places in my life. I gave him the rogue experience, and he helped me feel a little bit of the pack life I missed out on. In the end, it fizzled out, as it should have. But he’s not a bad guy.”

“What do you mean you weren’t in the greatest of places?” I asked.

She shrugged. “I still remember my childhood friends. Even reconnected with a couple as teenagers. But they were all in high school, about to graduate, move on to jobs within the pack, college, finding mates. All that stuff that I didn’t get to be a part of. I had a hard time with it, I guess. But I had my dad to keep me grounded and a good group of friends. And honestly, experiencing it with Jason was kind of annoying. They were just trying to act like they thought we acted. They kind of romanticized life as a rogue.”

She told me about the rogue kids that gravitated toward their little piece of the world. I told her about growing up in the castle with my sister. We talked back and forth for hours, exchanging stories about our time with the people we knew, things we did, the trouble we got into. By two in the morning, we were sitting on the couch, facing each other, as Willa showed me some silly game she and her friends used to play.

“Okay,” she said, holding her hands out in front of her, palms facing up. “Put her hands on mine gently.”

I did as instructed.

“Okay, eyes up here now.”

I looked and we locked eyes. There was a gleam in hers that I hadn’t seen before.

“Now, the goal is to pull your hands back before I can slap them. Don’t look at our hands,” she scolded as I glanced down.

“Okay, okay,” I said. As soon as my eyes were back on hers, I felt the slight sting of skin hitting mine. “Seriously? That’s how this is played?”

She laughed as she put her hands back out.

“Alright. I get it now.”

She tried a few more times before she was finally able to clip me again. We switched positions. It was her turn to get away. We had to take deep breaths to calm our giggling. Yes, giggling. Like fucking teenagers. She was doing pretty well at getting away from me. I was waiting extra long this time, and I thought I had her when suddenly she slapped my cheeks between her hands.

“Oh, really?” I said.

She gave me a triumphant look that was by far the cutest thing I had ever fucking seen in my life. Next thing, she squealed as I launched myself at her, pinning her to the cushions beneath me.

“You want to play dirty, huh?”

I woke up to the tingling sensation I was slowly beginning to crave. I opened my eyes to see Ferrin sitting over me. He had a worried expression. I sat up in the bed.“What’s wrong?” I managed to croak, my voice still waking up.“Shh,” Ferrin soothed. “I didn’t mean to startle you. I’m sorry.”I relaxed a little, but the look on his face still had me on edge. He sighed and grabbed my hand, rubbing his thumb along the back.“I have to go out of town today. I may be gone until tomorrow,” he said.“Oh,” I replied, grappling with the relief and disappointment that I suddenly felt simultaneously. “Can I ask where you’re going?”He gave me a soft smile. “I invested in a business venture with a company out in Paslow. Right now, it’s a private endeavor, but if it works out, I can take it to the council. It could be beneficial for the whole kingdom. But they seem to have run into some problems. Four days.It had been four days since I had seen Willa. What should have been a two-day trip to assess the progress of an investment had turned into a peace negotiation. I hated having to leave her after the night we’d had. It had been perfect. Well, nearly perfect. When she asked me to stay with her, it felt like she didn’t think that would ever happen again.I had taken the helicopter back home and was practically running across the castle grounds. I felt like a madman, almost desperate to get back to my mate. There was something in the feeling that had me on edge. It wasn’t just the separation that was tearing at my insides. I had felt it more and more the closer I got to home. Something wasn’t right. When I reached the main entrance and saw Miranda waiting at the door, I knew something was wrong. My heart stopped at the look on her face. It was etched with worry, adding years that made her look more her age.“What’s wrong? What’s happened?” I demanded, rushing to her.She opened

I had Miranda help me get Willa into her pajamas and out of her robe without waking her. I wasn’t surprised, knowing she hadn’t slept for days and the emotional toll her body had endured. I tucked us under the covers and lay next to her, holding her against my chest, too afraid to stop touching her. I could tell the contact was helping, even in her unconscious state. I wasn’t about to take that away again. I stayed there with her for hours. I had drifted off when I was awoken by a familiar voice.“Holy shit.”I opened my eyes to see Rebekah standing by the bed.“And ow,” she said, holding her hand to her heart. “You’ve got a hell of a lot of explaining to do, big brother.”“Yeah, yeah,” I griped as I sat up, gently prying my fingers from Willa’s. “There would be less explaining if you hadn’t decided to live across the country,” I teased.I looked over to see Miranda standing by the dining table. I nodded for her to come and sit with Willa as I climbed out of bed. Rebekah came around t

Ferrin walked his sister out of the room. She was right when she said I would feel tired. I was exhausted, but I felt good. At least I felt better than I had the past couple days. I pushed myself out of the chair and started moving them back to their place at the table. Ferrin came up behind me and grabbed my waist.“No, you’re going back to bed,” he said as he pulled the chair from my hands.“I’m fine, Ferrin,” I protested. I wasn’t ready to go to sleep. I needed to feel like I was doing something.Ferrin buried his face in my neck, wrapping his arms around my middle. He took a deep breath. “But I’m not,” he said gently. “You scared the hell out of me.”I leaned against him. “I’m sorry. That’s never happened to me before.”He nodded, lifting up to kiss me on the temple. “It’s our bond. The stronger it gets, the stronger we both get. I’m so sorry, Willa. I should have seen this coming. I should have known this would happen.”“You couldn’t have known. This is all new for both of us.” I

I opened my eyes slowly, bracing myself against the sunlight shining through the window. I stretched my arms, rolling over to find the other side of the bed empty. The clock on the nightstand told me I had slept almost the entire morning. It was almost noon. I heard the bathroom door open and turned to see Ferrin walking out. I bit my lip as I looked him up and down. He had just gotten out of the shower and was towel drying his hair, another towel wrapped low around his waist. It was the first time I got to really see him, to admire how damn attractive he really was. I sat up in the bed, not wanting to miss anything as he moved through the room. He reached into the closet and pulled out a shirt, catching me watching when he turned back to the room. A cheeky grin spread across his face as he moved in my direction.“Good morning, gorgeous,” he said, leaning down to give me a kiss.“Mmm, I could say the same to you,” I replied. He chuckled as he went to the dresser and pulled a pair of b

I was chewing on my lip as I thought about what he was saying. I wasn’t sure how I felt about the idea of having a constant entourage. Was he going to have people following me around all the time? That seemed a bit restrictive. I just wanted to see my family and friends. I didn’t want a parade of babysitters.Ferrin tugged my lip from between my teeth, lifting my chin as he started pushing me to the bathroom.“It’s only temporary, Willa. Once you get out of here and get settled in, you’ll be where you were meant to be. No more isolation and plenty of purpose, okay?” he asked, kissing my forehead when I nodded. “Now, go take your shower. I’ll be back soon.”I took my time in the shower, thinking about how much my life had changed in such a short time. I know that finding your fated mate often turns your life upside down, but dang. Even my dad didn’t have to deal with this much change. He may have never been a part of pack life before, but at least he grew up around them enough to gain

We can get you out the same way we got you in. It’s where you’re going to go afterward. It would be better if you both could disappear for a day or two,” Damen said.“We can come up with some errand that Ferrin got called off for. But we’ll have to coordinate it because it’ll have to be the public story of how you two met,” Austin said. “So you better make it damn good.”“We’ll let you two discuss that,” Damen offered as he stood. “But I suggest we move soon. Something was really bothering her. And it wasn’t the same anger or disappointment I had felt from her the night before. No, she seemed… nervous around me. Almost scared.I had never seen Willa be timid. I didn’t think she even had it in her.But whatever was causing these feelings, they were only directed at me. She had acted normally toward Rebekah and warmly toward Henry and the kids. She was a picture of sweetness and belonging. My gut clenched, imagining what could possibly have her acting so distant from me. I hated this. I needed to be close to her more than ever right now, and this is when she decided to avoid me. Frustration and even a little anger started to creep up on me. I went to the office there in my apartment and found the carafe of bourbon. I poured a glass and took a few minutes to drink it before I went back to Willa’s room.I gently turned the knob. Opening it, I found Willa standing in front of the full-length mirror in the corner of the room. I could see her fac

I didn’t sleep much longer after Willa left. The unease and anxiety that had been growing through the night had quickly seeped back into my bones. They had lessened for those few short hours I was able to hold her. But when she left, it was like a premonition of what would happen if I screwed everything up — if I made the wrong decision. We had gone through every single detail in Billy’s file that night. Scouring over every piece of information. We had relied heavily on Dante’s expertise, hoping he could shed better light on what we were looking over. With each passing hour, his thoughts were following the same path as Willa’s father’s. And with each passing hour, my mood soured even more. By two in the morning, Dante was so suspicious of what was going on that Damen insisted I fill him in on everything.I had reluctantly complied at the time, but Dante said this information did fill in a lot of gaps in the information. He went over everything again once he knew more of what we were l

Rebekah was right about the gazebo being a good place to escape and get some privacy away from the castle. We spent a couple hours sitting there while she told me about the people I would be meeting at my introduction dinner. She pulled up pictures from her phone to help me recognize them. By the time we were done, she had gone through over forty people of various importance, and I was feeling a little overwhelmed. But I also felt more confident about the upcoming ordeal. We decided to move on so that she could show me around the grounds a little bit more before we had to meet her family when they arrived. We were walking along the hedges when she asked me what I planned to wear to the dinner. I froze up when she asked.“Crap,” I said. “I actually have to think about that, don’t I?”She laughed softly at my mortified expression. “It’s okay. I would love to help you get ready.”“Okay,” I said with a grateful sigh of relief.“Don’t worry,” she said. “You’ll do just fine. And I highly do

I was really getting tired of having to hide in rooms whenever Ferrin was acting like a jerk. I didn’t regret my decision to stay with him, but all this was becoming a bit suffocating. I couldn’t handle it if Ferrin suddenly started keeping things from me.I paced around the room for a while before I changed into my pajamas and tried to go to sleep. But I only ended up tossing and turning for a couple of hours. Finally, I let out a frustrated huff and threw the blankets off of me. I was still frustrated with Ferrin, and I was mad that I missed him, but I was also worried. It was the kind of worry that just sat in the peripheral. You know it’s there, but you just don’t know why.But then again, we both had a lot to worry about right now. So, I was probably just overreacting.I climbed out of bed and made my way through the joining bathroom and through to Ferrin’s bedroom. I paused a moment to breathe in his scent, which was all over the place. I quickly started to relax. I crawled unde

Not long after Ferrin left, Miranda came in with a load of groceries to stock our little kitchen. She also gave me my phone. Apparently, one of the border guards found it in the woods where Ferrin “saved” me from the attack because it was ringing non-stop. Austin swung by and picked it up before heading back to the castle behind us.It was dead by now, so I popped it on the charger before helping Miranda make some sandwiches. I convinced her to stay and eat with me, knowing she probably hadn’t taken a break all day.“So, what are you going to do with your extra week of paid vacation,” I asked, moving on to my second sandwich after inhaling the first. I definitely must have been healing faster because I was starving.Miranda laughed. “Ferrin said you insisted he gave me a raise. Although it was entirely unnecessary.”“It was absolutely necessary. You have done so much for me since I got here,” I said bluntly, “and I can’t imagine this place would run a fraction as smoothly without you,

Arlo was still waiting outside when I left our quarters, but his expression was a bit less jovial than it was a few moments ago.“What did you do to get Damen’s knickers in such a bunch?”“What makes you think I did anything?” I asked as he followed me. Obviously, Damen had mind-linked him as well.“He told me I better get my arse to your office to make sure you haven’ done somethin’ royally stupid,” Arlo replied.Honestly, I didn’t know what I could have done. Unless this was about last night, but all my thoughts of sending Willa away had completely passed now. Everything had been going smoothly since we returned, so I had no idea what was going on. And it was pissing me off as well.I stormed into my office to find Damen and Austin waiting, both looking particularly displeased about something.“What the hell is all this about?” I asked angrily.“You tell us,” Damen said, dropping an accordion folder on my desk dramatically. It only took an instant to recognize it, and I cursed under

I looked at him skeptically. “A rogue werewolf from Avilvale? Even keeping my alpha nature from them, I don’t see them being too happy about that.”“There will be those who will have an opinion,” Ferrin said casually. “But not all of them will hold it against you once they meet you.
