I was laughing as I wiggled against his grip. Then our eyes met and we both sobered up. Both realizing the intimate position we were in. My breath hitched in anticipation, wondering what he would do next. Knowing what I wanted him to do while acknowledging that I shouldn’t.
But I was finding it hard to care.
This had been one of the best nights of my life.
Then it happened. His lips were on mine in a fevered kiss which quickly deepened as we reveled in the taste of one another. Ferrin’s fingers intertwined with mine, holding both my hands with one of his. The other slipped down my side all the way to my thigh, catching the back of my knee to lift it up and around his waist. His mouth moved to my neck, licking and nipping along my skin. His hand traveled back up, slipping under my shirt, sending electricity straight to my core as he brushed against my bare skin.
He palmed my breast, and I moaned as he tweaked my nipple through the fabric of my bra. I felt my abs clench as the need between my thighs grew stronger, aided by the feeling of Ferrin’s hard length pressed between my legs. I arched my back, pressing harder against him, needing more contact.
A growl reverberated from Ferrin’s chest in response to my actions. He pulled the buttons loose on my shirt in one quick motion, yanking it out of his way so he could free my breasts from their confines. He immediately took one in his mouth while he continued to attend to the other with his hand. I groaned, biting my lip as the ache started to become painful.
“Ferrin,” I gasped.
He moved his lips to the other breast. His hand slipped down between us, flicking the button of my shorts open with ease. He lifted up, pulling away from me just a little.
“Tell me to stop, Willa,” he gasped out, coming back up to take my lips in another kiss. “I can’t unless you tell me to stop.”
“No. Don’t stop.”
He growled as he took my mouth again, his hand plunging under the waistband of my shorts and panties. I moaned loudly as his fingers found my clit, working rough, steady circles that had me writhing beneath him. He slipped a finger inside my slick entrance, quickly followed by another.
“Fuck, Willa,” Ferrin panted against my shoulder.
He began moving his fingers in and out of me, curling his fingers against my g-spot as he thrust, his thumb still working my clit. I cried out as the onslaught of sensations coursed through me, bringing me closer to my release. I felt my core tighten around his fingers as I approached the edge.
“That’s my girl,” Ferrin breathed into my ear, nipping at its flesh with his teeth. “Come for me, Willa.”
He quickened his pace, pushing me faster to my climax. In a rush, I came crashing down. My body trembling with the spasms of my orgasm. Ferrin’s mouth landed on mine, swallowing my cries of pleasure as I came apart around him.
Ferrin removed his hand from my shorts as I came back to earth. I was trying to gather my thoughts as he whispered in my ear again.
“Goddess, Willa. That was the sexiest fucking thing I’ve ever seen.” He repositioned his weight, releasing my hands that he still had pinned.
I brought my hands down to his chest, meeting his gaze. He leaned into me, brushing his nose against mine, then along my cheek, gently nuzzling along my jaw.
“Are you okay?” he asked, a tinge of pain in his voice. “I’m sorry. I went too far.”
I grabbed his face in my hands and lifted it up. I kissed him hard. “No,” I whispered against his lips. “You didn’t.”
I continued the kiss, moving my hands down his chest, along the muscles of his abdomen, and around his back. I admired the feel of him beneath my fingers, against my body. I lifted my hips, grinding against him as my desire for more of him grew strong again. He groaned against my lips, returning the movement, thrusting his hips between us. I started to tug at his shirt, but the act seemed to rip him out of the moment.
He grabbed my hand, pulling away from me. His face was strained, his jaw clenched tightly, and his eyes flashed yellow as he worked to gain control of his lycan. With deep breaths, he rested his forehead against my chest.
“We can’t, Willa,” he finally said. “I can’t. Not now. Not yet.”
I cupped his cheek, lifting his face to look at me. “Okay,” I said gently.
He snaked an arm around my back as he pressed his lips to mine, lifting me off the cushions. He dipped under my knees, laying my legs over his lap as he sat us upright on the sofa again. Keeping his hold on me, he brushed my hair from my face, tucking it behind my ear.
“I want you to trust me, Willa,” he said. “Before we go any farther. I need you to trust me. Once we’re mated, there’s no going back for me, Willa. Marked or not, there’s no getting rid of me.”
His tone was playful but still serious. And he was right. Despite getting carried away like I did, deep down, I still couldn’t let myself trust him. Not completely, anyway. It was an odd feeling. Somehow, I knew I could trust him with my life. I believed he would protect me. And while I wanted so much to believe he wasn’t involved in my mother’s assassination, I couldn’t bring myself to take him at his word. Not yet. I needed more answers first.
I nodded with a sigh, leaning against his chest. “And I suppose we should figure out this prophecy of yours, also. In the end, it sounds like we’re better off apart anyway.”
“No,” Ferrin said firmly. “That’s not going to happen. We know you’re not the threat now, Willa. That means the prophecy is a warning to both of us. A warning that someone else is working against us. Prophecies can be avoided.”
“If you truly believed any of that, you wouldn’t be waiting, Ferrin,” I said solemnly.
“Willa…”
“I’m not mad,” I stopped him, pressing a hand to his chest. “I’m not ready for more either. I’m saying I understand. You have too much to lose. You may want me to trust you before we solidify our bond, but you also need to trust me.”
His hand went to my face, lifting it to look at him.
“I do trust you, Willa,” he said.
I looked into his deep, piercing blue eyes and saw so many emotions. I shook my head. “No, you want to trust me. Just like I want to trust you. But there is something inside both of us that won’t let us. Something holding us back.”
He sighed, kissing my forehead as I laid my head on his shoulder. My fingers drew shapes along his chest.
“It’s okay, Ferrin. I mean, it’s not like I was just out taking a stroll when we met. We both know I wasn’t lost,” I teased.
“Oh, yeah. I know,” he taunted back.
His fingers continued to stroke my hair as I lay against him. We fit together like a puzzle. I let the feeling sink into me, letting myself become engrossed in the first thing in my life that just felt right in over thirteen years. I deserved this small, isolated moment of peace. And frankly, I would need the memory to keep me together.
I was glad he stopped us from going further. The more I came back to earth, the more I remembered I couldn’t stay. I needed to get home to take care of my dad and my friends. And as Ferrin said, it wasn’t safe for me here.
No, this little moment of peace would have to do.
Then, once I got out of here, we’d reject each other and go our separate ways. He would be safe from the prophecy, and I would be free to live my life as normal, hopefully, with some closure about my mother.
“I should get you to bed,” Ferrin whispered.
I blinked back the tears that were threatening to fall, hoping he didn’t notice. “Yeah,” I said, lifting my legs from his lap and standing up.
My pajamas were folded neatly on the chest at the foot of the bed. I moved to pick them up, but Ferrin stopped me. He stood behind me as his hands traveled up my arms, slipping around the collar of my shirt as he pulled it down my arms, dropping it on the chest next to my night clothes. He had ripped several of the buttons off earlier, making it unwearable.
He brushed my hair aside and unhooked my bra, sliding the straps off. Tingles erupted as his fingers traced the scars on my shoulder. I closed my eyes, swallowing as I anticipated the feel of his lips on my skin. Instead, a shirt was tugged over my head. I slipped my arms through the sleeves as Ferrin lifted my hair from the collar. I felt him bury his face in my curls, taking a deep breath as he slid my shorts from my hips, letting them drop to the floor.
He pushed me gently to the side of the bed, pulling the covers down before turning me to face him. He knelt down in front of me, gently lifting one foot and then the other, stepping them into the cotton shorts I slept in before pulling them up my legs.
I looked up at him as he stood before me. He had masked his emotions again. Somehow I liked it even less than the first day I was here. He leaned in and kissed me, backing me up until I was sitting on the bed.
“Good night, Willa,” he whispered. He turned to leave, but I grabbed his hand.
I didn’t know why I had stopped him at first. I was about to let him go when I realized I just needed my moment of peace to last a little longer. Just long enough to get me through the night. Then that would be enough.
“Stay with me,” I said gently. “Just until I fall asleep.”
He smiled down at me, cupping my cheek. “Of course.”
I scooted back onto the bed and snuggled under the covers, leaving room for Ferrin to slide in beside me. Once he was under the blankets, he pulled me against him, wrapping his arms around me as my back was pressed to his chest. I breathed in his scent, committing it to memory as I drifted off to sleep.
I woke up to the tingling sensation I was slowly beginning to crave. I opened my eyes to see Ferrin sitting over me. He had a worried expression. I sat up in the bed.“What’s wrong?” I managed to croak, my voice still waking up.“Shh,” Ferrin soothed. “I didn’t mean to startle you. I’m sorry.”I relaxed a little, but the look on his face still had me on edge. He sighed and grabbed my hand, rubbing his thumb along the back.“I have to go out of town today. I may be gone until tomorrow,” he said.“Oh,” I replied, grappling with the relief and disappointment that I suddenly felt simultaneously. “Can I ask where you’re going?”He gave me a soft smile. “I invested in a business venture with a company out in Paslow. Right now, it’s a private endeavor, but if it works out, I can take it to the council. It could be beneficial for the whole kingdom. But they seem to have run into some problems. I need to go and straighten some things out.”“Okay,” I said with a soft smile. I didn’t really know
Four days.It had been four days since I had seen Willa. What should have been a two-day trip to assess the progress of an investment had turned into a peace negotiation. I hated having to leave her after the night we’d had. It had been perfect. Well, nearly perfect. When she asked me to stay with her, it felt like she didn’t think that would ever happen again.I had taken the helicopter back home and was practically running across the castle grounds. I felt like a madman, almost desperate to get back to my mate. There was something in the feeling that had me on edge. It wasn’t just the separation that was tearing at my insides. I had felt it more and more the closer I got to home. Something wasn’t right. When I reached the main entrance and saw Miranda waiting at the door, I knew something was wrong. My heart stopped at the look on her face. It was etched with worry, adding years that made her look more her age.“What’s wrong? What’s happened?” I demanded, rushing to her.She opened
I had Miranda help me get Willa into her pajamas and out of her robe without waking her. I wasn’t surprised, knowing she hadn’t slept for days and the emotional toll her body had endured. I tucked us under the covers and lay next to her, holding her against my chest, too afraid to stop touching her. I could tell the contact was helping, even in her unconscious state. I wasn’t about to take that away again. I stayed there with her for hours. I had drifted off when I was awoken by a familiar voice.“Holy shit.”I opened my eyes to see Rebekah standing by the bed.“And ow,” she said, holding her hand to her heart. “You’ve got a hell of a lot of explaining to do, big brother.”“Yeah, yeah,” I griped as I sat up, gently prying my fingers from Willa’s. “There would be less explaining if you hadn’t decided to live across the country,” I teased.I looked over to see Miranda standing by the dining table. I nodded for her to come and sit with Willa as I climbed out of bed. Rebekah came around t
Ferrin walked his sister out of the room. She was right when she said I would feel tired. I was exhausted, but I felt good. At least I felt better than I had the past couple days. I pushed myself out of the chair and started moving them back to their place at the table. Ferrin came up behind me and grabbed my waist.“No, you’re going back to bed,” he said as he pulled the chair from my hands.“I’m fine, Ferrin,” I protested. I wasn’t ready to go to sleep. I needed to feel like I was doing something.Ferrin buried his face in my neck, wrapping his arms around my middle. He took a deep breath. “But I’m not,” he said gently. “You scared the hell out of me.”I leaned against him. “I’m sorry. That’s never happened to me before.”He nodded, lifting up to kiss me on the temple. “It’s our bond. The stronger it gets, the stronger we both get. I’m so sorry, Willa. I should have seen this coming. I should have known this would happen.”“You couldn’t have known. This is all new for both of us.” I
I opened my eyes slowly, bracing myself against the sunlight shining through the window. I stretched my arms, rolling over to find the other side of the bed empty. The clock on the nightstand told me I had slept almost the entire morning. It was almost noon. I heard the bathroom door open and turned to see Ferrin walking out. I bit my lip as I looked him up and down. He had just gotten out of the shower and was towel drying his hair, another towel wrapped low around his waist. It was the first time I got to really see him, to admire how damn attractive he really was. I sat up in the bed, not wanting to miss anything as he moved through the room. He reached into the closet and pulled out a shirt, catching me watching when he turned back to the room. A cheeky grin spread across his face as he moved in my direction.“Good morning, gorgeous,” he said, leaning down to give me a kiss.“Mmm, I could say the same to you,” I replied. He chuckled as he went to the dresser and pulled a pair of b
I was chewing on my lip as I thought about what he was saying. I wasn’t sure how I felt about the idea of having a constant entourage. Was he going to have people following me around all the time? That seemed a bit restrictive. I just wanted to see my family and friends. I didn’t want a parade of babysitters.Ferrin tugged my lip from between my teeth, lifting my chin as he started pushing me to the bathroom.“It’s only temporary, Willa. Once you get out of here and get settled in, you’ll be where you were meant to be. No more isolation and plenty of purpose, okay?” he asked, kissing my forehead when I nodded. “Now, go take your shower. I’ll be back soon.”I took my time in the shower, thinking about how much my life had changed in such a short time. I know that finding your fated mate often turns your life upside down, but dang. Even my dad didn’t have to deal with this much change. He may have never been a part of pack life before, but at least he grew up around them enough to gain
“We have to make sure it’s safe first,” I said, looking toward Rebekah.“I think she’ll be okay for some time,” she said with a smile. “I’ll stick around a few more days to see if I can gauge a timeline, but I don’t see it wearing off for a while.”I squeezed Willa’s thigh, happy we could put all this behind us soon.“So, how do you suggest we get me out of here?” Willa asked eagerly.Damen smirked. “That’s the easy part, really. We can get you out the same way we got you in. It’s where you’re going to go afterward. It would be better if you both could disappear for a day or two,” Damen said.“We can come up with some errand that Ferrin got called off for. But we’ll have to coordinate it because it’ll have to be the public story of how you two met,” Austin said. “So you better make it damn good.”“We’ll let you two discuss that,” Damen offered as he stood. “But I suggest we move soon. I’d prefer tonight, in the early hours of the morning.”“We’ll be ready,” I said. “I’ll mind-link you
It was still dark out when Ferrin woke me a few hours later. The clock said it was just past three in the morning. He was already dressed and ready to go. He told me to go ahead and get dressed while he went to make sure everyone was ready. I said not to worry about packing. Miranda had already taken care of everything.I pushed the covers off, wondering if that woman ever slept. I pulled on a pair of leggings and a T-shirt and tied my hair back out of my face. I didn’t have to wait long before Ferrin returned with Damen.“You ready?”I nodded. “Yep.”“Okay, Damen is going to go ahead of us to make sure the coast stays clear. We’re going to take you through the servants’ passages and out a back exit. Once we’re out of the castle, we’ll have to walk for a while. You up for that?”I laughed. “I’ve been trapped in a tower for over a week. What do you think?”He smiled and shook his head. “Alright then, let’s go.”He grabbed my hand and led me out the door. I don’t know why I was so nervo
Something was really bothering her. And it wasn’t the same anger or disappointment I had felt from her the night before. No, she seemed… nervous around me. Almost scared.I had never seen Willa be timid. I didn’t think she even had it in her.But whatever was causing these feelings, they were only directed at me. She had acted normally toward Rebekah and warmly toward Henry and the kids. She was a picture of sweetness and belonging. My gut clenched, imagining what could possibly have her acting so distant from me. I hated this. I needed to be close to her more than ever right now, and this is when she decided to avoid me. Frustration and even a little anger started to creep up on me. I went to the office there in my apartment and found the carafe of bourbon. I poured a glass and took a few minutes to drink it before I went back to Willa’s room.I gently turned the knob. Opening it, I found Willa standing in front of the full-length mirror in the corner of the room. I could see her fac
I didn’t sleep much longer after Willa left. The unease and anxiety that had been growing through the night had quickly seeped back into my bones. They had lessened for those few short hours I was able to hold her. But when she left, it was like a premonition of what would happen if I screwed everything up — if I made the wrong decision. We had gone through every single detail in Billy’s file that night. Scouring over every piece of information. We had relied heavily on Dante’s expertise, hoping he could shed better light on what we were looking over. With each passing hour, his thoughts were following the same path as Willa’s father’s. And with each passing hour, my mood soured even more. By two in the morning, Dante was so suspicious of what was going on that Damen insisted I fill him in on everything.I had reluctantly complied at the time, but Dante said this information did fill in a lot of gaps in the information. He went over everything again once he knew more of what we were l
Rebekah was right about the gazebo being a good place to escape and get some privacy away from the castle. We spent a couple hours sitting there while she told me about the people I would be meeting at my introduction dinner. She pulled up pictures from her phone to help me recognize them. By the time we were done, she had gone through over forty people of various importance, and I was feeling a little overwhelmed. But I also felt more confident about the upcoming ordeal. We decided to move on so that she could show me around the grounds a little bit more before we had to meet her family when they arrived. We were walking along the hedges when she asked me what I planned to wear to the dinner. I froze up when she asked.“Crap,” I said. “I actually have to think about that, don’t I?”She laughed softly at my mortified expression. “It’s okay. I would love to help you get ready.”“Okay,” I said with a grateful sigh of relief.“Don’t worry,” she said. “You’ll do just fine. And I highly do
I was really getting tired of having to hide in rooms whenever Ferrin was acting like a jerk. I didn’t regret my decision to stay with him, but all this was becoming a bit suffocating. I couldn’t handle it if Ferrin suddenly started keeping things from me.I paced around the room for a while before I changed into my pajamas and tried to go to sleep. But I only ended up tossing and turning for a couple of hours. Finally, I let out a frustrated huff and threw the blankets off of me. I was still frustrated with Ferrin, and I was mad that I missed him, but I was also worried. It was the kind of worry that just sat in the peripheral. You know it’s there, but you just don’t know why.But then again, we both had a lot to worry about right now. So, I was probably just overreacting.I climbed out of bed and made my way through the joining bathroom and through to Ferrin’s bedroom. I paused a moment to breathe in his scent, which was all over the place. I quickly started to relax. I crawled unde
Not long after Ferrin left, Miranda came in with a load of groceries to stock our little kitchen. She also gave me my phone. Apparently, one of the border guards found it in the woods where Ferrin “saved” me from the attack because it was ringing non-stop. Austin swung by and picked it up before heading back to the castle behind us.It was dead by now, so I popped it on the charger before helping Miranda make some sandwiches. I convinced her to stay and eat with me, knowing she probably hadn’t taken a break all day.“So, what are you going to do with your extra week of paid vacation,” I asked, moving on to my second sandwich after inhaling the first. I definitely must have been healing faster because I was starving.Miranda laughed. “Ferrin said you insisted he gave me a raise. Although it was entirely unnecessary.”“It was absolutely necessary. You have done so much for me since I got here,” I said bluntly, “and I can’t imagine this place would run a fraction as smoothly without you,
Arlo was still waiting outside when I left our quarters, but his expression was a bit less jovial than it was a few moments ago.“What did you do to get Damen’s knickers in such a bunch?”“What makes you think I did anything?” I asked as he followed me. Obviously, Damen had mind-linked him as well.“He told me I better get my arse to your office to make sure you haven’ done somethin’ royally stupid,” Arlo replied.Honestly, I didn’t know what I could have done. Unless this was about last night, but all my thoughts of sending Willa away had completely passed now. Everything had been going smoothly since we returned, so I had no idea what was going on. And it was pissing me off as well.I stormed into my office to find Damen and Austin waiting, both looking particularly displeased about something.“What the hell is all this about?” I asked angrily.“You tell us,” Damen said, dropping an accordion folder on my desk dramatically. It only took an instant to recognize it, and I cursed under
I picked Willa’s dress off the couch and helped her slip it up her arms. She went to start buttoning it up, but we both quickly realized there were several buttons missing. I chuckled as her shoulders fell with a sigh, giving me a disappointed look.“Oops,” I said with a shrug, not even about to hide my grin.“If you keep this up, I’m going to run out of things to wear real quick,” she said, shoving my arm playfully.“That’s not exactly an incentive to be more careful,” I replied.“Ha ha,” she said. “But I don’t have any…”I stopped her with a look.“Miranda.” She caught on quickly, shaking her head with a grin.“I told her to put everything in your room for now. We’ll move it whenever you want.”“She really does deserve a raise, you know?” Willa said as she started towards the bedroom.“Already taken care of,” I called after her. “Plus an extra week of paid vacation.”She turned around, backing into the room without skipping a step. “That’s my man,” she said with a wink before closin
I looked at him skeptically. “A rogue werewolf from Avilvale? Even keeping my alpha nature from them, I don’t see them being too happy about that.”“There will be those who will have an opinion,” Ferrin said casually. “But not all of them will hold it against you once they meet you. The council isn’t full of old lycans who are stuck in their ways. We have several that are around my age or have always been on the more progressive side, like my father and me.”“Like Lady Boucher?” I asked, not entirely successful in hiding the bitterness in my voice. I don’t know why she kept popping into my head since I had met her in the hallway. She just made me feel off.“No, the Boucher family tends to lean toward the old ways where lycans’ status was definitively superior.”“I’m surprised the council isn’t insisting you mate with her,” I said.Ferrin made a face. “They know any chance of that ever happening died a long time ago.”“What do you mean?” I pulled away, jealousy spiking through me. “Fer
My chest was swollen with pride in my mate. All I wanted to do was get her behind closed doors and show her how damn perfect she was. I was annoyed that Desiree had the audacity to speak to her Luna the way she had. By all rights, I should have been pissed. And I was at first. But after watching Willa eviscerate her in such a concise, effective, and tactful way, I couldn’t bring myself to care that much anymore.I thought back to that night I had imagined what would happen when the two of them met. I was in no way disappointed. And now, knowing Willa’s skill in a fight, Desiree would learn quickly not to disrespect my mate again. We finally made it to our private quarters, but we still had an entourage that I only felt a little guilty about wanting to get rid of as soon as possible. But I really did want Rebekah to take a look at Willa’s leg. And Damen, Miranda, and I had to discuss what was going to happen next so Willa could get an idea of what to expect over the next few days.My q
