I woke up to the tingling sensation I was slowly beginning to crave. I opened my eyes to see Ferrin sitting over me. He had a worried expression. I sat up in the bed.
“What’s wrong?” I managed to croak, my voice still waking up.
“Shh,” Ferrin soothed. “I didn’t mean to startle you. I’m sorry.”
I relaxed a little, but the look on his face still had me on edge. He sighed and grabbed my hand, rubbing his thumb along the back.
“I have to go out of town today. I may be gone until tomorrow,” he said.
“Oh,” I replied, grappling with the relief and disappointment that I suddenly felt simultaneously. “Can I ask where you’re going?”
He gave me a soft smile. “I invested in a business venture with a company out in Paslow. Right now, it’s a private endeavor, but if it works out, I can take it to the council. It could be beneficial for the whole kingdom. But they seem to have run into some problems. I need to go and straighten some things out.”
“Okay,” I said with a soft smile. I didn’t really know what else to say anyway. I wasn’t about to complain and sound like some needy child. But I also kind of thought the time apart could be a good thing. Some distance might make it easier to get my head straight again.
“I’m sorry I have to go right now. If I could avoid leaving, I would.”
“Ferrin, it’s fine,” I assured him, resting my hand on his. “You have more important responsibilities than worrying about me. I mean, what could happen to me up here?”
He lifted a cell phone. “This is yours,” he said as he put it in my hand. “I’ll check in with you, so keep it close by. Feel free to call your dad and whoever else you want. Just remember to be careful what you tell them.”
“Thank you,” I said with a genuine smile but it faded quickly.
Ferrin brushed my hair back. “What’s wrong, sweetheart?”
I shook my head. “I’m just not used to relying on someone else for everything.” I could tell Ferrin wasn’t happy about the situation with him leaving. I didn’t want to make him feel worse, so I tried to joke about it. “I guess I just don’t know whether to feel useless or pampered.”
“Babe, you should absolutely feel pampered,” he said with a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes. “And if it helps, I’ll have Miranda spend the next two days giving you every spa treatment there is.”
“Don’t you dare,” I exclaimed. “Goddess knows I wouldn’t know what to do with myself. I’d feel so awkward it would be anything but relaxing. If anyone should be pampered, it’s Miranda.”
Ferrin laughed. “Now that is something I can agree with. Once we get all this straightened out, I think I’ll do just that.”
“I’ll hold you to that.”
Ferrin pulled me to him. I threw my arms around his neck as he kissed me. I was glad that I was able to improve his mood before he left.
“You’re not making this easy, sweetheart.” He groaned.
“I could pretend to be mad at you,” I said as his lips moved to my neck.
He chuckled. “If only you weren’t hot as hell when you’re mad at me.”
“Excuse me?” I said, pulling away from him.
His mouth was on mine as he pushed me back against the pillows, pressing his body to mine. My fingers went into his hair, holding him to me as I felt electricity shooting to my core. I snapped myself out of it and pushed him away roughly.
“You have to go,” I insisted.
Ferrin looked over at the clock. “I’ve got ten minutes.”
He moved to kiss me again but braced my hands against his chest. “Nuh-uh,” I said with a laugh. “Go.”
He huffed dramatically but dragged himself off me.
“Alright,” he said. “I’ll be back as soon as I can. I should have some news on your mother’s case and hopefully a lead on the seer who foretold the prophecy by then. Then we can figure out our next move together, okay?”
I nodded, anticipation already starting to grow. I really had been feeling useless. I should have been grateful for the time to focus on things I never seemed to have time for, like my artwork and reading. Especially since there wasn’t the lack of material I was used to. But it just didn’t seem enough.
Ferrin kissed me one more time and left. I immediately picked up the phone and dialed my dad’s number. It went to voicemail.
“Hey, Dad,” I said after the beep. “Sorry for the strange number again. But you can save this one. This should be the number I call you on for now. I’ll have the phone on me. So give me a call when you get this. Love you.”
I hung up and stared at the phone for a few minutes. Sure enough, my father’s number flashed across the screen.
“Dad?”
“Hey, Will,” he replied, relief in his voice. “Where are you? Are you coming home?”
“Not just yet, but soon. I’m still trying to wrap some things up here.”
“Where is ‘here,’ Will?” Dad asked. “I don’t understand what is going on. I’m worried. Last time we spoke, you said you were in trouble.”
“Oh, yeah, that,” I tried to sound casual. “I went out patrolling. I know,” I stopped him from saying anything, “and I don’t want to hear it, Dad. But I ran into some kids out rogue hunting. Nothing I couldn’t handle, but this guy did step in and helped get rid of them.”
“Another rogue?”
“No, not exactly. He was looking for his sister, who ran away a few years ago. I told him I’d help him out. But how is everything going at home?” I hated lying to him, so I was trying to avoid more details.
“Tawny and some of the others have been coming by looking for you. They’re pretty stressed out about not knowing where you are.”
Guilt settled in my chest. “Yeah, I’m sorry about that. Things have been a little crazy. Does Tawny or Greg still have their cells working?”
“I don’t know about Greg, but Tawny’s doesn’t work anymore. That’s why she’s been at the house,” he replied.
“Okay, can you give her mine? It’s on the table in my room by the bed. Put this number in it and have her call me later.”
“Yeah, I can do that. You sure you’re okay?”
“Toast and jam, Dad,” I said with a smile. “This lead we’re following should keep us within cell service for now. So I’ll keep in touch. And don’t forget to have Tawny call me when she can.”
“I won’t,” he replied. “Miss you, Will.”
“I miss you, too. I’ll talk to you soon, okay? Love you.”
“Love you, too.”
I hung up the phone. For some reason, the call wasn’t as comforting as I thought it would be. I was relieved that my dad and my friends weren’t out searching for me and putting themselves at risk. But I hated lying to them. I knew why I had to, and I agreed with Ferrin that I couldn’t tell them what was going on yet. But that’s what made it worse. I couldn’t be there to watch out for them, but I also couldn’t confide in them why, either. Suddenly, I was dreading Tawny’s call.
The feeling of uselessness sunk deeper into my bones.
I pushed myself out of bed and headed to the shower, forcing myself to do something with my time. The situation was what it was, and I would find a way to make the best of it. I really had been complaining that I never had enough time for my art or reading or other projects. There was always something that needed to be done to keep everyone fed, housed, and safe. My family could handle themselves without me for a few more days. I might as well make the best of it.
I
started off by selecting a book from Adam’s selection. I picked a long one that caught my interest and was able to get engrossed enough that time went by quickly. It was after dark when Tawny finally called.
The call went as well as I expected. While it was good to hear her voice and learn that everyone was doing okay, it was hard not being able to tell them where I was or when I would be back. I almost told her I had found my mate, but it felt wrong to tell her before I told my father. So, I stuck to the story I gave him and left the call with a promise to check in again.
I talked to Miranda for a little while when she brought me dinner, filling her in on the conversations with my friends and family. Ferrin’s gamma and head of security stopped in to introduce himself and check on me, and we spoke for a few minutes as well. And true to his word, Ferrin called to check in as I was heading to bed. He had also been texting me throughout the day to keep in touch.
The next day was much the same. I woke up, worked out, read a little more, worked on some sketches, even watched a few episodes of some show Miranda suggested. I heard from Ferrin less, to which he apologized when he called that evening. He also informed me that he would be gone another day. Things in Paslow were more complicated than he expected.
I assured him I was fine and not to worry about me. He needed to focus on work and get everything taken care of. I sensed this was an important investment, and the last thing I wanted was for him to make a mistake because I made him feel guilty.
By the end of the third day, I was feeling a bit emotionally drained. I couldn’t sleep the night before, spending the whole night tossing and turning. So I didn’t have the energy to talk to anyone back home, so I settled on texting them a few times. I tried talking with Shawn and Adam to help curb the homesickness, but it didn’t feel the same as it first did. I felt like they were worried about getting in trouble again for talking to me, and I didn’t want to put them in that position, either. So, I just shut myself in again.
I couldn’t sleep again.
I felt like a zombie pacing the room. I just felt so lonely and useless and pathetic and homesick. I had so much going on in my head it physically hurt. I just wanted to feel numb. For just a little while. To make it all stop. I didn’t even know how long I had been there anymore. I barely registered the room. I just paced. Focusing on the path in the carpet my feet were following.
I vaguely felt someone guiding me somewhere. Felt water running over my skin. I don’t know when I finally registered that Miranda was there with me. But her voice suddenly broke through, telling me she would be right back as she sat me in an armchair. My eyes drifted out the window, resting on the daunting sight of the mountains outside.
Four days.It had been four days since I had seen Willa. What should have been a two-day trip to assess the progress of an investment had turned into a peace negotiation. I hated having to leave her after the night we’d had. It had been perfect. Well, nearly perfect. When she asked me to stay with her, it felt like she didn’t think that would ever happen again.I had taken the helicopter back home and was practically running across the castle grounds. I felt like a madman, almost desperate to get back to my mate. There was something in the feeling that had me on edge. It wasn’t just the separation that was tearing at my insides. I had felt it more and more the closer I got to home. Something wasn’t right. When I reached the main entrance and saw Miranda waiting at the door, I knew something was wrong. My heart stopped at the look on her face. It was etched with worry, adding years that made her look more her age.“What’s wrong? What’s happened?” I demanded, rushing to her.She opened
I had Miranda help me get Willa into her pajamas and out of her robe without waking her. I wasn’t surprised, knowing she hadn’t slept for days and the emotional toll her body had endured. I tucked us under the covers and lay next to her, holding her against my chest, too afraid to stop touching her. I could tell the contact was helping, even in her unconscious state. I wasn’t about to take that away again. I stayed there with her for hours. I had drifted off when I was awoken by a familiar voice.“Holy shit.”I opened my eyes to see Rebekah standing by the bed.“And ow,” she said, holding her hand to her heart. “You’ve got a hell of a lot of explaining to do, big brother.”“Yeah, yeah,” I griped as I sat up, gently prying my fingers from Willa’s. “There would be less explaining if you hadn’t decided to live across the country,” I teased.I looked over to see Miranda standing by the dining table. I nodded for her to come and sit with Willa as I climbed out of bed. Rebekah came around t
Ferrin walked his sister out of the room. She was right when she said I would feel tired. I was exhausted, but I felt good. At least I felt better than I had the past couple days. I pushed myself out of the chair and started moving them back to their place at the table. Ferrin came up behind me and grabbed my waist.“No, you’re going back to bed,” he said as he pulled the chair from my hands.“I’m fine, Ferrin,” I protested. I wasn’t ready to go to sleep. I needed to feel like I was doing something.Ferrin buried his face in my neck, wrapping his arms around my middle. He took a deep breath. “But I’m not,” he said gently. “You scared the hell out of me.”I leaned against him. “I’m sorry. That’s never happened to me before.”He nodded, lifting up to kiss me on the temple. “It’s our bond. The stronger it gets, the stronger we both get. I’m so sorry, Willa. I should have seen this coming. I should have known this would happen.”“You couldn’t have known. This is all new for both of us.” I
I opened my eyes slowly, bracing myself against the sunlight shining through the window. I stretched my arms, rolling over to find the other side of the bed empty. The clock on the nightstand told me I had slept almost the entire morning. It was almost noon. I heard the bathroom door open and turned to see Ferrin walking out. I bit my lip as I looked him up and down. He had just gotten out of the shower and was towel drying his hair, another towel wrapped low around his waist. It was the first time I got to really see him, to admire how damn attractive he really was. I sat up in the bed, not wanting to miss anything as he moved through the room. He reached into the closet and pulled out a shirt, catching me watching when he turned back to the room. A cheeky grin spread across his face as he moved in my direction.“Good morning, gorgeous,” he said, leaning down to give me a kiss.“Mmm, I could say the same to you,” I replied. He chuckled as he went to the dresser and pulled a pair of b
I was chewing on my lip as I thought about what he was saying. I wasn’t sure how I felt about the idea of having a constant entourage. Was he going to have people following me around all the time? That seemed a bit restrictive. I just wanted to see my family and friends. I didn’t want a parade of babysitters.Ferrin tugged my lip from between my teeth, lifting my chin as he started pushing me to the bathroom.“It’s only temporary, Willa. Once you get out of here and get settled in, you’ll be where you were meant to be. No more isolation and plenty of purpose, okay?” he asked, kissing my forehead when I nodded. “Now, go take your shower. I’ll be back soon.”I took my time in the shower, thinking about how much my life had changed in such a short time. I know that finding your fated mate often turns your life upside down, but dang. Even my dad didn’t have to deal with this much change. He may have never been a part of pack life before, but at least he grew up around them enough to gain
“We have to make sure it’s safe first,” I said, looking toward Rebekah.“I think she’ll be okay for some time,” she said with a smile. “I’ll stick around a few more days to see if I can gauge a timeline, but I don’t see it wearing off for a while.”I squeezed Willa’s thigh, happy we could put all this behind us soon.“So, how do you suggest we get me out of here?” Willa asked eagerly.Damen smirked. “That’s the easy part, really. We can get you out the same way we got you in. It’s where you’re going to go afterward. It would be better if you both could disappear for a day or two,” Damen said.“We can come up with some errand that Ferrin got called off for. But we’ll have to coordinate it because it’ll have to be the public story of how you two met,” Austin said. “So you better make it damn good.”“We’ll let you two discuss that,” Damen offered as he stood. “But I suggest we move soon. I’d prefer tonight, in the early hours of the morning.”“We’ll be ready,” I said. “I’ll mind-link you
It was still dark out when Ferrin woke me a few hours later. The clock said it was just past three in the morning. He was already dressed and ready to go. He told me to go ahead and get dressed while he went to make sure everyone was ready. I said not to worry about packing. Miranda had already taken care of everything.I pushed the covers off, wondering if that woman ever slept. I pulled on a pair of leggings and a T-shirt and tied my hair back out of my face. I didn’t have to wait long before Ferrin returned with Damen.“You ready?”I nodded. “Yep.”“Okay, Damen is going to go ahead of us to make sure the coast stays clear. We’re going to take you through the servants’ passages and out a back exit. Once we’re out of the castle, we’ll have to walk for a while. You up for that?”I laughed. “I’ve been trapped in a tower for over a week. What do you think?”He smiled and shook his head. “Alright then, let’s go.”He grabbed my hand and led me out the door. I don’t know why I was so nervo
We made it to the cabin as the sun was beginning to rise. I could tell why Ferrin thought it would be a safe place for us to stay. It was well off of any main roads, tucked back into the woods with a small lake out the back and no evidence of any other structures nearby. It was also gorgeous. This wasn’t just some cabin like I had pictured. I was thinking of a small, seldom-used cabin that hunters or hikers would take shelter in. Not really belonging to anyone but was kept up by those who passed through on occasion to keep it usable. This was not that. This was clearly well-maintained. It was a stunning two-story, three-bedroom log cabin with all the amenities, including a hot tub on the back porch that led down to a firepit near the shoreline. I had a feeling it also belonged to his family. Or, at the very least, he knew the owner very well.I stood on the balcony off the upstairs master bedroom, wondering if I would ever get used to this. I was content with the minimalistic lifestyl
Something was really bothering her. And it wasn’t the same anger or disappointment I had felt from her the night before. No, she seemed… nervous around me. Almost scared.I had never seen Willa be timid. I didn’t think she even had it in her.But whatever was causing these feelings, they were only directed at me. She had acted normally toward Rebekah and warmly toward Henry and the kids. She was a picture of sweetness and belonging. My gut clenched, imagining what could possibly have her acting so distant from me. I hated this. I needed to be close to her more than ever right now, and this is when she decided to avoid me. Frustration and even a little anger started to creep up on me. I went to the office there in my apartment and found the carafe of bourbon. I poured a glass and took a few minutes to drink it before I went back to Willa’s room.I gently turned the knob. Opening it, I found Willa standing in front of the full-length mirror in the corner of the room. I could see her fac
I didn’t sleep much longer after Willa left. The unease and anxiety that had been growing through the night had quickly seeped back into my bones. They had lessened for those few short hours I was able to hold her. But when she left, it was like a premonition of what would happen if I screwed everything up — if I made the wrong decision. We had gone through every single detail in Billy’s file that night. Scouring over every piece of information. We had relied heavily on Dante’s expertise, hoping he could shed better light on what we were looking over. With each passing hour, his thoughts were following the same path as Willa’s father’s. And with each passing hour, my mood soured even more. By two in the morning, Dante was so suspicious of what was going on that Damen insisted I fill him in on everything.I had reluctantly complied at the time, but Dante said this information did fill in a lot of gaps in the information. He went over everything again once he knew more of what we were l
Rebekah was right about the gazebo being a good place to escape and get some privacy away from the castle. We spent a couple hours sitting there while she told me about the people I would be meeting at my introduction dinner. She pulled up pictures from her phone to help me recognize them. By the time we were done, she had gone through over forty people of various importance, and I was feeling a little overwhelmed. But I also felt more confident about the upcoming ordeal. We decided to move on so that she could show me around the grounds a little bit more before we had to meet her family when they arrived. We were walking along the hedges when she asked me what I planned to wear to the dinner. I froze up when she asked.“Crap,” I said. “I actually have to think about that, don’t I?”She laughed softly at my mortified expression. “It’s okay. I would love to help you get ready.”“Okay,” I said with a grateful sigh of relief.“Don’t worry,” she said. “You’ll do just fine. And I highly do
I was really getting tired of having to hide in rooms whenever Ferrin was acting like a jerk. I didn’t regret my decision to stay with him, but all this was becoming a bit suffocating. I couldn’t handle it if Ferrin suddenly started keeping things from me.I paced around the room for a while before I changed into my pajamas and tried to go to sleep. But I only ended up tossing and turning for a couple of hours. Finally, I let out a frustrated huff and threw the blankets off of me. I was still frustrated with Ferrin, and I was mad that I missed him, but I was also worried. It was the kind of worry that just sat in the peripheral. You know it’s there, but you just don’t know why.But then again, we both had a lot to worry about right now. So, I was probably just overreacting.I climbed out of bed and made my way through the joining bathroom and through to Ferrin’s bedroom. I paused a moment to breathe in his scent, which was all over the place. I quickly started to relax. I crawled unde
Not long after Ferrin left, Miranda came in with a load of groceries to stock our little kitchen. She also gave me my phone. Apparently, one of the border guards found it in the woods where Ferrin “saved” me from the attack because it was ringing non-stop. Austin swung by and picked it up before heading back to the castle behind us.It was dead by now, so I popped it on the charger before helping Miranda make some sandwiches. I convinced her to stay and eat with me, knowing she probably hadn’t taken a break all day.“So, what are you going to do with your extra week of paid vacation,” I asked, moving on to my second sandwich after inhaling the first. I definitely must have been healing faster because I was starving.Miranda laughed. “Ferrin said you insisted he gave me a raise. Although it was entirely unnecessary.”“It was absolutely necessary. You have done so much for me since I got here,” I said bluntly, “and I can’t imagine this place would run a fraction as smoothly without you,
Arlo was still waiting outside when I left our quarters, but his expression was a bit less jovial than it was a few moments ago.“What did you do to get Damen’s knickers in such a bunch?”“What makes you think I did anything?” I asked as he followed me. Obviously, Damen had mind-linked him as well.“He told me I better get my arse to your office to make sure you haven’ done somethin’ royally stupid,” Arlo replied.Honestly, I didn’t know what I could have done. Unless this was about last night, but all my thoughts of sending Willa away had completely passed now. Everything had been going smoothly since we returned, so I had no idea what was going on. And it was pissing me off as well.I stormed into my office to find Damen and Austin waiting, both looking particularly displeased about something.“What the hell is all this about?” I asked angrily.“You tell us,” Damen said, dropping an accordion folder on my desk dramatically. It only took an instant to recognize it, and I cursed under
I picked Willa’s dress off the couch and helped her slip it up her arms. She went to start buttoning it up, but we both quickly realized there were several buttons missing. I chuckled as her shoulders fell with a sigh, giving me a disappointed look.“Oops,” I said with a shrug, not even about to hide my grin.“If you keep this up, I’m going to run out of things to wear real quick,” she said, shoving my arm playfully.“That’s not exactly an incentive to be more careful,” I replied.“Ha ha,” she said. “But I don’t have any…”I stopped her with a look.“Miranda.” She caught on quickly, shaking her head with a grin.“I told her to put everything in your room for now. We’ll move it whenever you want.”“She really does deserve a raise, you know?” Willa said as she started towards the bedroom.“Already taken care of,” I called after her. “Plus an extra week of paid vacation.”She turned around, backing into the room without skipping a step. “That’s my man,” she said with a wink before closin
I looked at him skeptically. “A rogue werewolf from Avilvale? Even keeping my alpha nature from them, I don’t see them being too happy about that.”“There will be those who will have an opinion,” Ferrin said casually. “But not all of them will hold it against you once they meet you. The council isn’t full of old lycans who are stuck in their ways. We have several that are around my age or have always been on the more progressive side, like my father and me.”“Like Lady Boucher?” I asked, not entirely successful in hiding the bitterness in my voice. I don’t know why she kept popping into my head since I had met her in the hallway. She just made me feel off.“No, the Boucher family tends to lean toward the old ways where lycans’ status was definitively superior.”“I’m surprised the council isn’t insisting you mate with her,” I said.Ferrin made a face. “They know any chance of that ever happening died a long time ago.”“What do you mean?” I pulled away, jealousy spiking through me. “Fer
My chest was swollen with pride in my mate. All I wanted to do was get her behind closed doors and show her how damn perfect she was. I was annoyed that Desiree had the audacity to speak to her Luna the way she had. By all rights, I should have been pissed. And I was at first. But after watching Willa eviscerate her in such a concise, effective, and tactful way, I couldn’t bring myself to care that much anymore.I thought back to that night I had imagined what would happen when the two of them met. I was in no way disappointed. And now, knowing Willa’s skill in a fight, Desiree would learn quickly not to disrespect my mate again. We finally made it to our private quarters, but we still had an entourage that I only felt a little guilty about wanting to get rid of as soon as possible. But I really did want Rebekah to take a look at Willa’s leg. And Damen, Miranda, and I had to discuss what was going to happen next so Willa could get an idea of what to expect over the next few days.My q
