I had Miranda help me get Willa into her pajamas and out of her robe without waking her. I wasn’t surprised, knowing she hadn’t slept for days and the emotional toll her body had endured. I tucked us under the covers and lay next to her, holding her against my chest, too afraid to stop touching her. I could tell the contact was helping, even in her unconscious state. I wasn’t about to take that away again. I stayed there with her for hours. I had drifted off when I was awoken by a familiar voice.
“Holy shit.”
I opened my eyes to see Rebekah standing by the bed.
“And ow,” she said, holding her hand to her heart. “You’ve got a hell of a lot of explaining to do, big brother.”
“Yeah, yeah,” I griped as I sat up, gently prying my fingers from Willa’s. “There would be less explaining if you hadn’t decided to live across the country,” I teased.
I looked over to see Miranda standing by the dining table. I nodded for her to come and sit with Willa as I climbed out of bed. Rebekah came around the bed to meet me, throwing her arms around me in a big hug. I squeezed her as I lifted her off the ground.
“I’ve missed you,” I said, setting her back on her feet.
“Likewise. And apparently, I’ve missed a lot of other things too.” She looked over at the sleeping werewolf she had just seen me wrapped around. My eyes followed. I relaxed a little as I watched Miranda affectionately stroking her hair as she held her hand.
“Come with me,” I said, pulling my discarded shirt over my head and heading out of the room. My stomach clenched at having to leave Willa, but I needed to speak with my sister privately. I had a feeling this wouldn’t be a quiet conversation.
I walked her to the suite below Willa’s, and the moment the door was shut, Rebekah turned on me.
“What the actual fuck, Ferrin?” she yelled. “The alpha is your mate?”
I grimaced and was about to ask her how she could tell, but she stopped me with a look. It was a stupid question.
“How long have you known?” she asked.
“About a week,” I said.
“A week?” she exclaimed. She punched me hard in the shoulder. “Why the hell didn’t you call me?”
“I’m sorry,” I said, blocking another punch. “I’ve kind of had a lot going on.” I indicated the room above us with my sleeping mate.
She crossed her arms over her chest in a huff. She glared at me as if she was waiting for me to speak. “Alright then, fill me in.”
I told her everything that had happened over the last week, ending with how I found Willa today.
“Shit,” she said when I was finished. “You sure have gotten yourself in a mess this time, big brother. So, what do you need me to do?”
I looked up at her. “I was hoping you could use your ability to suppress her aura.”
“Ferrin, no,” she said.
“Rebekah, I don’t know what else to do. She can’t stay up there. She needs to be a part of a pack. If I can’t find a way to give that to her here…” I looked her in the eye, silently pleading with her.
“Ferrin,” she said gently, “this isn’t an injury or an illness. This is who she is.”
“And the council will kill her for who she is. You know they will.”
Rebekah sighed. “Okay. I will do this on one condition — I get to talk to her first. She has to be okay with this. And I’m still not making any guarantees I can do it. That’s not really what I use my abilities for.”
“I know,” I said as I grabbed her in a hug, feeling some relief. “Thank you, sis.”
“Hey, I’ve always wanted a sister. The least I can do is keep those pompous assholes from executing her on sight.”
I smiled at her and led her back upstairs. Rebekah had brought her medical bag with her and asked for a few minutes to examine her before waking her up. She took out a few tools and checked some vitals, making notes. Then she sat on the bed next to her and rested a hand on Willa’s forehead and another on her chest. She sat like that for a while. Her head down and her eyes closed.
When she finally stood, she turned to me, a strained expression on her face.
“What is it?”
“I think I can do it,” she said. “But there’s something odd. There are traces of a suppressant already in her system. It’s strange. I can tell the effect it had on her but not what it is. I’d like to run some blood tests if she agrees.”
“Are you saying this is her aura already being suppressed?” Miranda asked.
Rebekah shook her head. “No, most of the effect has worn off. It’s likely she’s at full strength now, or close at least. But that could explain why you’ve seen a difference in her abilities.”
“You think someone was dosing her with something?” I asked, trying to wrap my head around all of this.
“Possibly,” Rebekah said. “I’ll know when I run the tests. You can wake her now if you would like.”
I nodded. I would have preferred to let her sleep longer, but this needed to be done as soon as possible. If it didn’t work, I would need time to find another option. I sat on the edge of the bed and rubbed my hand along Willa’s shoulder, gently nudging her as I spoke her name. It took a minute, but her eyes slowly fluttered open, and she shifted her position.
“Ferrin?” she said, still a little disoriented.
“Yes, sweetheart, I’m here,” I said with a smile, brushing her hair back.
She pushed herself up on the bed and noticed we weren’t alone. Concern spread across her face. “What’s going on?”
“How are you feeling?” I asked.
She offered me a sad smile. “Better.”
“Do you know what happened?”
Her eyes filled with tears. “I’m sorry,” she said, putting her head in her hands. “Everything just got to me, I guess. I’ll be okay now.”
“Shh, you have nothing to be sorry about, Willa. I’m the one that should be sorry. I should have seen an alpha as strong as you wouldn’t do well isolated like this.”
She looked up at me. “What do you mean?”
I shook my head. “I’ll explain that later. Right now, I want to figure out how to get you out of this room safely. We may have found a solution for that.”
She looked at me hopefully.
“Willa, this is my sister, Rebekah,” I said, motioning Rebekah over.
Willa shot up straighter in the bed, her hand going up to smooth her hair. “Oh, hello,” she said, reaching her hand out. “Willa.”
Rebekah smiled brightly and shook her hand. “It’s lovely to meet you, Willa.”
“Do you know anything about female lycans’ abilities?” I asked Willa.
She shrugged. “A little.”
“Well,” Rebekah started, “some of us have extra abilities that allow us to do things that others can’t. For example, I can influence an illness or injury.”
“Like a healer?”
“Sort of. I more so manipulate the ailment. I can lessen the effects, but I can intensify them as well,” Rebekah said as she glanced at me. “That’s what Ferrin and I would like to try. There may be a way to suppress your aura. To make it so that you don’t appear as an alpha.”
Willa looked at me, and I offered a supportive smile as I grabbed her hand. “We’ll only do this if you’re okay with trying it, okay?”
“Will it be permanent?” she asked.
Rebekah shook her head. “No. Although I’m not sure how long it will last, it will wear off eventually. Or I can reverse it at any time.”
She looked at my sister. “Will it make me different? Will I feel different?”
“If I’m honest, I don’t really know. But, in theory, it’s likely you won’t feel any different than you did a week ago.”
Willa thought for a minute. “Okay, I’ll do it.”
I released a deep breath in relief, pulling her to me and kissing her. Rebekah cleared her throat behind me.
I turned to her. “Like I didn’t have to see worse between you and Henry.”
“Oh, I’m sure you’re up for paying me back for that,” she said, winking at my mate. “But let’s get started. I’m not sure how long this will take and, girl, this” — she waved a hand in a circle, indicating Willa’s energy filling the room — “is a little intense.”
Willa blushed. Rebekah went and grabbed two chairs from the dining table and brought them closer. Willa threw the covers off her and slid to the edge of the bed. I moved to help her up, but she swatted my hand away.
“I can walk, Ferrin,” she said. “Stop fussing.”
I sighed and followed her to the chair, standing behind her as my sister sat in front of her.
“Okay, Willa,” she started, taking Willa’s hands in hers, “I have to maintain contact through the process. This shouldn’t hurt at all, but it may be a little uncomfortable. But if at any point you want to stop, just say the word, okay?”
“Okay,” Willa replied, sounding determined.
“Good,” Rebekah said with a smile. Her eyes went up to me, hovering behind Willa nervously. “Do I need to send you outside?”
I glared at her.
“Bro, give us a little space. Go stand over there.” She nodded to the other side of the room.
I reluctantly moved away from them but didn’t go far.
“Okay, Willa, deep breaths,” Rebekah instructed as she closed her eyes. Her thumbs began to rub circles on the backs of Willa’s hands, her grip gentle. Their breathing slowed. After what seemed like hours but was probably only about fifteen minutes, I started to feel the shift in the room. The atmosphere was less heavy, and there was no longer an underlying sadness that sank into my bones. I could feel Willa’s aura pulling back, receding into her.
A few minutes later, Rebekah opened her eyes and squeezed Willa’s hands. Willa looked back at her.
“How do you feel?” my sister asked.
“Good,” Willa said with a smile, but she seemed weak. I moved back to her side, kneeling beside the chair and turning her face to look at me.
“You’re going to feel tired for a while. So you should get some rest.” Rebekah stood and retrieved her medical bag. “Willa, I would like to do some blood tests. Just to see what effect the suppression has. Are you okay with that?”
She looked a little confused.
“Rebekah is a doctor,” I told her.
“So you are a healer,” Willa said with a wry smile.
Rebekah laughed. “Yeah, I guess you were right.”
Willa agreed to the blood tests and sat patiently as my sister drew some samples. Rebekah said to wait at least twenty-four hours before leaving. She wanted to come back and do another examination to see how well the process was working. She would make a decision then.
Ferrin walked his sister out of the room. She was right when she said I would feel tired. I was exhausted, but I felt good. At least I felt better than I had the past couple days. I pushed myself out of the chair and started moving them back to their place at the table. Ferrin came up behind me and grabbed my waist.“No, you’re going back to bed,” he said as he pulled the chair from my hands.“I’m fine, Ferrin,” I protested. I wasn’t ready to go to sleep. I needed to feel like I was doing something.Ferrin buried his face in my neck, wrapping his arms around my middle. He took a deep breath. “But I’m not,” he said gently. “You scared the hell out of me.”I leaned against him. “I’m sorry. That’s never happened to me before.”He nodded, lifting up to kiss me on the temple. “It’s our bond. The stronger it gets, the stronger we both get. I’m so sorry, Willa. I should have seen this coming. I should have known this would happen.”“You couldn’t have known. This is all new for both of us.” I
I opened my eyes slowly, bracing myself against the sunlight shining through the window. I stretched my arms, rolling over to find the other side of the bed empty. The clock on the nightstand told me I had slept almost the entire morning. It was almost noon. I heard the bathroom door open and turned to see Ferrin walking out. I bit my lip as I looked him up and down. He had just gotten out of the shower and was towel drying his hair, another towel wrapped low around his waist. It was the first time I got to really see him, to admire how damn attractive he really was. I sat up in the bed, not wanting to miss anything as he moved through the room. He reached into the closet and pulled out a shirt, catching me watching when he turned back to the room. A cheeky grin spread across his face as he moved in my direction.“Good morning, gorgeous,” he said, leaning down to give me a kiss.“Mmm, I could say the same to you,” I replied. He chuckled as he went to the dresser and pulled a pair of b
I was chewing on my lip as I thought about what he was saying. I wasn’t sure how I felt about the idea of having a constant entourage. Was he going to have people following me around all the time? That seemed a bit restrictive. I just wanted to see my family and friends. I didn’t want a parade of babysitters.Ferrin tugged my lip from between my teeth, lifting my chin as he started pushing me to the bathroom.“It’s only temporary, Willa. Once you get out of here and get settled in, you’ll be where you were meant to be. No more isolation and plenty of purpose, okay?” he asked, kissing my forehead when I nodded. “Now, go take your shower. I’ll be back soon.”I took my time in the shower, thinking about how much my life had changed in such a short time. I know that finding your fated mate often turns your life upside down, but dang. Even my dad didn’t have to deal with this much change. He may have never been a part of pack life before, but at least he grew up around them enough to gain
“We have to make sure it’s safe first,” I said, looking toward Rebekah.“I think she’ll be okay for some time,” she said with a smile. “I’ll stick around a few more days to see if I can gauge a timeline, but I don’t see it wearing off for a while.”I squeezed Willa’s thigh, happy we could put all this behind us soon.“So, how do you suggest we get me out of here?” Willa asked eagerly.Damen smirked. “That’s the easy part, really. We can get you out the same way we got you in. It’s where you’re going to go afterward. It would be better if you both could disappear for a day or two,” Damen said.“We can come up with some errand that Ferrin got called off for. But we’ll have to coordinate it because it’ll have to be the public story of how you two met,” Austin said. “So you better make it damn good.”“We’ll let you two discuss that,” Damen offered as he stood. “But I suggest we move soon. I’d prefer tonight, in the early hours of the morning.”“We’ll be ready,” I said. “I’ll mind-link you
It was still dark out when Ferrin woke me a few hours later. The clock said it was just past three in the morning. He was already dressed and ready to go. He told me to go ahead and get dressed while he went to make sure everyone was ready. I said not to worry about packing. Miranda had already taken care of everything.I pushed the covers off, wondering if that woman ever slept. I pulled on a pair of leggings and a T-shirt and tied my hair back out of my face. I didn’t have to wait long before Ferrin returned with Damen.“You ready?”I nodded. “Yep.”“Okay, Damen is going to go ahead of us to make sure the coast stays clear. We’re going to take you through the servants’ passages and out a back exit. Once we’re out of the castle, we’ll have to walk for a while. You up for that?”I laughed. “I’ve been trapped in a tower for over a week. What do you think?”He smiled and shook his head. “Alright then, let’s go.”He grabbed my hand and led me out the door. I don’t know why I was so nervo
We made it to the cabin as the sun was beginning to rise. I could tell why Ferrin thought it would be a safe place for us to stay. It was well off of any main roads, tucked back into the woods with a small lake out the back and no evidence of any other structures nearby. It was also gorgeous. This wasn’t just some cabin like I had pictured. I was thinking of a small, seldom-used cabin that hunters or hikers would take shelter in. Not really belonging to anyone but was kept up by those who passed through on occasion to keep it usable. This was not that. This was clearly well-maintained. It was a stunning two-story, three-bedroom log cabin with all the amenities, including a hot tub on the back porch that led down to a firepit near the shoreline. I had a feeling it also belonged to his family. Or, at the very least, he knew the owner very well.I stood on the balcony off the upstairs master bedroom, wondering if I would ever get used to this. I was content with the minimalistic lifestyl
My chest was swollen with pride in my mate. All I wanted to do was get her behind closed doors and show her how damn perfect she was. I was annoyed that Desiree had the audacity to speak to her Luna the way she had. By all rights, I should have been pissed. And I was at first. But after watching Willa eviscerate her in such a concise, effective, and tactful way, I couldn’t bring myself to care that much anymore.I thought back to that night I had imagined what would happen when the two of them met. I was in no way disappointed. And now, knowing Willa’s skill in a fight, Desiree would learn quickly not to disrespect my mate again. We finally made it to our private quarters, but we still had an entourage that I only felt a little guilty about wanting to get rid of as soon as possible. But I really did want Rebekah to take a look at Willa’s leg. And Damen, Miranda, and I had to discuss what was going to happen next so Willa could get an idea of what to expect over the next few days.My q
I looked at him skeptically. “A rogue werewolf from Avilvale? Even keeping my alpha nature from them, I don’t see them being too happy about that.”“There will be those who will have an opinion,” Ferrin said casually. “But not all of them will hold it against you once they meet you. The council isn’t full of old lycans who are stuck in their ways. We have several that are around my age or have always been on the more progressive side, like my father and me.”“Like Lady Boucher?” I asked, not entirely successful in hiding the bitterness in my voice. I don’t know why she kept popping into my head since I had met her in the hallway. She just made me feel off.“No, the Boucher family tends to lean toward the old ways where lycans’ status was definitively superior.”“I’m surprised the council isn’t insisting you mate with her,” I said.Ferrin made a face. “They know any chance of that ever happening died a long time ago.”“What do you mean?” I pulled away, jealousy spiking through me. “Fer
Something was really bothering her. And it wasn’t the same anger or disappointment I had felt from her the night before. No, she seemed… nervous around me. Almost scared.I had never seen Willa be timid. I didn’t think she even had it in her.But whatever was causing these feelings, they were only directed at me. She had acted normally toward Rebekah and warmly toward Henry and the kids. She was a picture of sweetness and belonging. My gut clenched, imagining what could possibly have her acting so distant from me. I hated this. I needed to be close to her more than ever right now, and this is when she decided to avoid me. Frustration and even a little anger started to creep up on me. I went to the office there in my apartment and found the carafe of bourbon. I poured a glass and took a few minutes to drink it before I went back to Willa’s room.I gently turned the knob. Opening it, I found Willa standing in front of the full-length mirror in the corner of the room. I could see her fac
I didn’t sleep much longer after Willa left. The unease and anxiety that had been growing through the night had quickly seeped back into my bones. They had lessened for those few short hours I was able to hold her. But when she left, it was like a premonition of what would happen if I screwed everything up — if I made the wrong decision. We had gone through every single detail in Billy’s file that night. Scouring over every piece of information. We had relied heavily on Dante’s expertise, hoping he could shed better light on what we were looking over. With each passing hour, his thoughts were following the same path as Willa’s father’s. And with each passing hour, my mood soured even more. By two in the morning, Dante was so suspicious of what was going on that Damen insisted I fill him in on everything.I had reluctantly complied at the time, but Dante said this information did fill in a lot of gaps in the information. He went over everything again once he knew more of what we were l
Rebekah was right about the gazebo being a good place to escape and get some privacy away from the castle. We spent a couple hours sitting there while she told me about the people I would be meeting at my introduction dinner. She pulled up pictures from her phone to help me recognize them. By the time we were done, she had gone through over forty people of various importance, and I was feeling a little overwhelmed. But I also felt more confident about the upcoming ordeal. We decided to move on so that she could show me around the grounds a little bit more before we had to meet her family when they arrived. We were walking along the hedges when she asked me what I planned to wear to the dinner. I froze up when she asked.“Crap,” I said. “I actually have to think about that, don’t I?”She laughed softly at my mortified expression. “It’s okay. I would love to help you get ready.”“Okay,” I said with a grateful sigh of relief.“Don’t worry,” she said. “You’ll do just fine. And I highly do
I was really getting tired of having to hide in rooms whenever Ferrin was acting like a jerk. I didn’t regret my decision to stay with him, but all this was becoming a bit suffocating. I couldn’t handle it if Ferrin suddenly started keeping things from me.I paced around the room for a while before I changed into my pajamas and tried to go to sleep. But I only ended up tossing and turning for a couple of hours. Finally, I let out a frustrated huff and threw the blankets off of me. I was still frustrated with Ferrin, and I was mad that I missed him, but I was also worried. It was the kind of worry that just sat in the peripheral. You know it’s there, but you just don’t know why.But then again, we both had a lot to worry about right now. So, I was probably just overreacting.I climbed out of bed and made my way through the joining bathroom and through to Ferrin’s bedroom. I paused a moment to breathe in his scent, which was all over the place. I quickly started to relax. I crawled unde
Not long after Ferrin left, Miranda came in with a load of groceries to stock our little kitchen. She also gave me my phone. Apparently, one of the border guards found it in the woods where Ferrin “saved” me from the attack because it was ringing non-stop. Austin swung by and picked it up before heading back to the castle behind us.It was dead by now, so I popped it on the charger before helping Miranda make some sandwiches. I convinced her to stay and eat with me, knowing she probably hadn’t taken a break all day.“So, what are you going to do with your extra week of paid vacation,” I asked, moving on to my second sandwich after inhaling the first. I definitely must have been healing faster because I was starving.Miranda laughed. “Ferrin said you insisted he gave me a raise. Although it was entirely unnecessary.”“It was absolutely necessary. You have done so much for me since I got here,” I said bluntly, “and I can’t imagine this place would run a fraction as smoothly without you,
Arlo was still waiting outside when I left our quarters, but his expression was a bit less jovial than it was a few moments ago.“What did you do to get Damen’s knickers in such a bunch?”“What makes you think I did anything?” I asked as he followed me. Obviously, Damen had mind-linked him as well.“He told me I better get my arse to your office to make sure you haven’ done somethin’ royally stupid,” Arlo replied.Honestly, I didn’t know what I could have done. Unless this was about last night, but all my thoughts of sending Willa away had completely passed now. Everything had been going smoothly since we returned, so I had no idea what was going on. And it was pissing me off as well.I stormed into my office to find Damen and Austin waiting, both looking particularly displeased about something.“What the hell is all this about?” I asked angrily.“You tell us,” Damen said, dropping an accordion folder on my desk dramatically. It only took an instant to recognize it, and I cursed under
I picked Willa’s dress off the couch and helped her slip it up her arms. She went to start buttoning it up, but we both quickly realized there were several buttons missing. I chuckled as her shoulders fell with a sigh, giving me a disappointed look.“Oops,” I said with a shrug, not even about to hide my grin.“If you keep this up, I’m going to run out of things to wear real quick,” she said, shoving my arm playfully.“That’s not exactly an incentive to be more careful,” I replied.“Ha ha,” she said. “But I don’t have any…”I stopped her with a look.“Miranda.” She caught on quickly, shaking her head with a grin.“I told her to put everything in your room for now. We’ll move it whenever you want.”“She really does deserve a raise, you know?” Willa said as she started towards the bedroom.“Already taken care of,” I called after her. “Plus an extra week of paid vacation.”She turned around, backing into the room without skipping a step. “That’s my man,” she said with a wink before closin
