Arlo was still waiting outside when I left our quarters, but his expression was a bit less jovial than it was a few moments ago.
“What did you do to get Damen’s knickers in such a bunch?”
“What makes you think I did anything?” I asked as he followed me. Obviously, Damen had mind-linked him as well.
“He told me I better get my arse to your office to make sure you haven’ done somethin’ royally stupid,” Arlo replied.
Honestly, I didn’t know what I could have done. Unless this was about last night, but all my thoughts of sending Willa away had completely passed now. Everything had been going smoothly since we returned, so I had no idea what was going on. And it was pissing me off as well.
I stormed into my office to find Damen and Austin waiting, both looking particularly displeased about something.
“What the hell is all this about?” I asked angrily.
“You tell us,” Damen said, dropping an accordion folder on my desk dramatically.
It only took an instant to recognize it, and I cursed under my breath. Billy had slipped the folder into my bag before I left ahead of Willa. I had noticed it when we were driving to the patrol hut but didn’t mention it to Austin at the time. I wanted us both to focus on getting Willa back first. Then with the stunt Willa had pulled and her being injured, and everything else going on, I had completely forgotten about it.
I sighed. They obviously knew what the contents of the folder were, and I couldn’t blame them for being worried. But, if I was being honest, seeing it again now, I wasn’t sure I was ready to address it. There had been so much we had already been through in less than two weeks, and this… This was what made it all feel like too much.
I walked to the credenza in the corner of the room behind my desk and poured two fingers of whiskey. I downed it in one go and refilled the glass, taking it to the desk with me.
“Okay, we all know I’m late to the party here, so someone is going to have to fill me in on what is going on,” Arlo said.
“That folder contains the original, un-doctored autopsy and police report for Melanie Carmine’s murder,” Austin spat.
“Along with other leads and information about the case,” Damen followed angrily.
“I found it in Ferrin’s bag that was left in my car.”
“And you thought you had the authority to open it?” I shot back irritably.
“There was wolfsbane all over the bag, Ferrin. I needed to see if it was important and needed to be salvaged,” Austin growled.
“I’m going to ask you a question, Ferrin,” Damen said, his voice serious, almost menacing. “I’m pretty sure I already know the answer, but I want to hear it from you. Does Willa know about this?”
I flinched. “No.”
“What the hell, Ferrin?” Austin exclaimed. “Why keep this from her? Do you know how dangerous that is? Where the hell did that even come from?”
“Her father,” I shot back. “And he kept it from her, too. With good reason.”
Damen shook his head. “There’s a difference with a parent keeping this from her. You’re her mate, Ferrin. Her mate who promised he would help her find her mother’s killer.”
I was struggling to keep my temper in check.
“Fine,” I said, throwing the file over the desk, hitting Damen in the chest. “Give it to her. But when she’s forced to leave me, to leave all of us, I’m holding you solely responsible. That’s if she doesn’t end up dead. And you better pray to the fucking moon goddess that doesn’t happen because not even thirty years of friendship would keep me from ripping you apart with my bare hands.”
The room went dead silent. My expression didn’t change, remaining cold and deadly as my best friends looked at me in pure shock.
I would not lose my mate.
“Okay, now,” Arlo said calmly, “I think it’s time we all settle down and let Ferrin explain what is going on.”
I took a few more deep breaths to calm my temper before falling into my chair. I took a swig of whiskey, letting the burn focus my mind.
“The evidence in that folder leads back to Willa’s uncle. Melanie’s brother and current alpha of the Black Moon Pack.”
“Shit,” Austin said, running his hand over his face.
I watched the muscles in Damen’s jaw work for a moment. “As tragic and awful as that is, why keep this from her? She needs to know, and you can help her get over that betrayal. We all can.”
I finished my whiskey, staring into the glass while deciding if I would get another. I decided against it and started telling them what her father had told me.
“Son of a bitch,” Austin finally said when I had finished. “there’s really no good way to handle this.”
“I tell her. She goes after her uncle and ends up forced to rule in Avilvale. I don’t see the pack leaders allowing her to keep ties to me if that happens.”
“Not to mention the council’s reaction. They would see it as treason,” Austin said.
My heart jumped to my throat. I hadn’t even thought about that.
“So, either she dies, or there will be war regardless of the choice she makes. Or you don’t tell her, and she never forgives you if she ever finds out,” Arlo said solemnly.
“Or we convince her not to go after her uncle herself,” Damen said, pulling his phone out of his pocket. “First, we need to have a professional look over all of this. To get a definitive answer that any of this is even possible.”
He leaned forward in his chair as he dialed a number.
“Rhodes,” he said. “How fast can you get back to the castle?”
Dante responded.
“Make it yesterday,” Damen said. “We’ve got a development that you need to look into, but we need to do it from here.”
Dante provided his reply, and Damen hung up the phone. “He’ll be here in a few hours. We’ll dig into this information. We’ll also go over any bit of intel we have from the other Avilvale packs, find out if there is any remote possibility that their loyalty to Melanie still exists. If Dante and I come to the same conclusion as Willa’s dad, and we believe her uncle was involved, then we’ll find the proof to bring him down. If we can convince Willa to let us handle it, maybe we can ensure a clean exchange of power in the Black Moon Pack. No one in Avilvale will need to know she’s still alive or that she’s the new Luna of Whearhal.”
Damen stood from his seat and gestured to Austin.
“Austin, I need you to contact the border patrol and make sure they let Dante right through.”
Austin nodded and followed Damen toward the door. But before they left, Damen paused and turned back to me.
“A bit of advice, Ferrin, from one friend to another… Don’t fucking mark her without telling her.”
He slammed the door behind him before he heard the low growl that rumbled in my chest. If he expected that to happen, he had better damn well hope they could find the proof they needed within the next two days. I wasn’t putting it off any longer. And I damn well wasn’t going to make it easier for her to leave me.
I immediately regretted that thought. I threw the empty whiskey glass across the room in frustration, shattering it against the bookcase. I was being selfish, and I knew it. But damn it, when was I going to catch a damn break. If there was ever a good reason to be selfish, it was this.
Not long after Ferrin left, Miranda came in with a load of groceries to stock our little kitchen. She also gave me my phone. Apparently, one of the border guards found it in the woods where Ferrin “saved” me from the attack because it was ringing non-stop. Austin swung by and picked it up before heading back to the castle behind us.It was dead by now, so I popped it on the charger before helping Miranda make some sandwiches. I convinced her to stay and eat with me, knowing she probably hadn’t taken a break all day.“So, what are you going to do with your extra week of paid vacation,” I asked, moving on to my second sandwich after inhaling the first. I definitely must have been healing faster because I was starving.Miranda laughed. “Ferrin said you insisted he gave me a raise. Although it was entirely unnecessary.”“It was absolutely necessary. You have done so much for me since I got here,” I said bluntly, “and I can’t imagine this place would run a fraction as smoothly without you,
I was really getting tired of having to hide in rooms whenever Ferrin was acting like a jerk. I didn’t regret my decision to stay with him, but all this was becoming a bit suffocating. I couldn’t handle it if Ferrin suddenly started keeping things from me.I paced around the room for a while before I changed into my pajamas and tried to go to sleep. But I only ended up tossing and turning for a couple of hours. Finally, I let out a frustrated huff and threw the blankets off of me. I was still frustrated with Ferrin, and I was mad that I missed him, but I was also worried. It was the kind of worry that just sat in the peripheral. You know it’s there, but you just don’t know why.But then again, we both had a lot to worry about right now. So, I was probably just overreacting.I climbed out of bed and made my way through the joining bathroom and through to Ferrin’s bedroom. I paused a moment to breathe in his scent, which was all over the place. I quickly started to relax. I crawled unde
Rebekah was right about the gazebo being a good place to escape and get some privacy away from the castle. We spent a couple hours sitting there while she told me about the people I would be meeting at my introduction dinner. She pulled up pictures from her phone to help me recognize them. By the time we were done, she had gone through over forty people of various importance, and I was feeling a little overwhelmed. But I also felt more confident about the upcoming ordeal. We decided to move on so that she could show me around the grounds a little bit more before we had to meet her family when they arrived. We were walking along the hedges when she asked me what I planned to wear to the dinner. I froze up when she asked.“Crap,” I said. “I actually have to think about that, don’t I?”She laughed softly at my mortified expression. “It’s okay. I would love to help you get ready.”“Okay,” I said with a grateful sigh of relief.“Don’t worry,” she said. “You’ll do just fine. And I highly do
I didn’t sleep much longer after Willa left. The unease and anxiety that had been growing through the night had quickly seeped back into my bones. They had lessened for those few short hours I was able to hold her. But when she left, it was like a premonition of what would happen if I screwed everything up — if I made the wrong decision. We had gone through every single detail in Billy’s file that night. Something was really bothering her. And it wasn’t the same anger or disappointment I had felt from her the night before. No, she seemed… nervous around me. Almost scared.I had never seen Willa be timid. I didn’t think she even had it in her.But whatever was causing these feelings, they were only directed at me. She had acted normally toward Rebekah and warmly toward Henry and the kids. She was a picture of sweetness and belonging. My gut clenched, imagining what could possibly have her acting so distant from me. I hated this. I needed to be close to her more than ever right now, and this is when she decided to avoid me. Frustration and even a little anger started to creep up on me. I went to the office there in my apartment and found the carafe of bourbon. I poured a glass and took a few minutes to drink it before I went back to Willa’s room.I gently turned the knob. Opening it, I found Willa standing in front of the full-length mirror in the corner of the room. I could see her fac
I stood at the kitchen sink and finished washing the dishes from dinner. My father started to snore softly in his chair in the next room, and a smile tugged at my lips. This was a typical night for us. We'd make dinner, talk about our day, then one of us would clean up. When it was my turn, Dad would read in his chair but was always asleep by the time I was done.Just the two of us.I put the last of the dishes away and hung the towel on the oven handle. I went to the living room and rested a hand on Dad’s shoulder, gently nudging him. He jerked awake as I knelt by his chair, resting an elbow on the arm and my chin in my hand, looking up at him with a grin.“Did you get any further in that book?” I chuckled.“Ha.” He lifted the book from his lap, placing the bookmark in its spot and closing it. “I suppose I didn’t.”“You’ve been on this one for two weeks,” I said, plucking it out of his hand while I stood. I returned it to the small shelf in the corner.“I’ll get it done eventually,”
I had followed her for miles. I knew she was a werewolf the moment I caught a whiff of her. I trailed ituntil I saw a glimpse of her wolf in my forest. I stalked her here. I told myself that it was because I needed to know who this wolf was on my land, but there was something about her scent that had mefollowing her in a way I didn’t think I was controlling. She tried to lose us near the end, but lycans are far better trackers than that. When she finally stopped and shifted into her human form, I had to approach her. Shifting out of my lycan form myself, I moved toward her. When I was a few steps away, her scent engulfed my senses, sending an irrepressible need through me. As soon as she turned around, I knew why.“Mate.”The word sprang from my lips. It was overwhelming. In the light of the moon, I saw her eyes widen in shock. Then fear flashed across them before they narrowed in determination. She took a defensivestance, and I pulled myself out of whatever trance I was in. That’s
There was a pounding in my head as light filtered through my eyelids. I winced but forced my eyes to open as I tried to remember what had happened. As my vision cleared and adjusted to the light, I realized I was in a strange bedroom. My heart started to pound as I pieced together the events of the night. I started to pull myself up into a sitting position when my eyes met another’s.It was the lycan from the forest.I jerked myself backward, hissing as my wrist was yanked hard by the sudden movement. I was chained to the bed. I moved my attention back to the stranger sitting in the chair nearby, putting my feet in a position I could start kicking if he came near me. I worked to steady my breathing. It was hard, with the ache in my head getting worse. But I wasn’t going to let him know I was scared.I set my jaw and waited for him to say something.“How is your head?” he asked, no emotion in his voice.I didn’t respond. Instead, I looked him up and down, taking a deep breath to take i

I picked Willa’s dress off the couch and helped her slip it up her arms. She went to start buttoning it up, but we both quickly realized there were several buttons missing. I chuckled as her shoulders fell with a sigh, giving me a disappointed look.“Oops,” I said with a shrug, not even about to hide my grin.“If you keep this up, I’m going to run out of things to wear real quick,” she said, shoving my arm playfully.“That’s not exactly an incentive to be more careful,” I replied.“Ha ha,” she said. “But I don’t have any…”I stopped her with a look.“Miranda.” She caught on quickly, shaking her head with a grin.“I told her to put everything in your room for now. I looked at him skeptically. “A rogue werewolf from Avilvale? Even keeping my alpha nature from them, I don’t see them being too happy about that.”“There will be those who will have an opinion,” Ferrin said casually. “But not all of them will hold it against you once they meet you. The council isn’t full of old lycans who are stuck in their ways. We have several that are around my age or have always been on the more progressive side, like my father and me.”“Like Lady Boucher?” I asked, not entirely successful in hiding the bitterness in my voice. I don’t know why she kept popping into my head since I had met her in the hallway. She just made me feel off.“No, the Boucher family tends to lean toward the old ways where lycans’ status was definitively superior.”“I’m surprised the council isn’t insisting you mate with her,” I said.Ferrin made a face. “They know any chance of that ever happening died a long time ago.”“What do you mean?” I pulled away, jealousy spiking through me. “Fer
My chest was swollen with pride in my mate. All I wanted to do was get her behind closed doors and show her how damn perfect she was. I was annoyed that Desiree had the audacity to speak to her Luna the way she had. By all rights, I should have been pissed. And I was at first. But after watching Willa eviscerate her in such a concise, effective, and tactful way, I couldn’t bring myself to care that much anymore.I thought back to that night I had imagined what would happen when the two of them met. I was in no way disappointed. And now, knowing Willa’s skill in a fight, Desiree would learn quickly not to disrespect my mate again. We finally made it to our private quarters, but we still had an entourage that I only felt a little guilty about wanting to get rid of as soon as possible. But I really did want Rebekah to take a look at Willa’s leg. And Damen, Miranda, and I had to discuss what was going to happen next so Willa could get an idea of what to expect over the next few days.My q
