I was pissed at Ferrin’s behavior, but I also felt a sense of satisfaction. My plan had only been to ingratiate myself to the guards so I could coax information out of them, maybe talk one of them into getting me a phone. While I was pretty sure that was out the window, I made sure that Ferrin knew I wasn’t going to make it easy for him.

But I was worried about Shawn. I didn’t want to get him, or any of the others, in trouble. I felt bad that I may have cost him his job. If I did, I would do whatever it took to make it right.

After I had calmed down and was sure that Ferrin had left, I went to the suite door and knocked. No one responded. I knocked again. Still nothing.

He had actually done it. He ordered them not to speak to me.

That son of a bitch.

Maybe I had let things go too far with that make-out session. But shit, I would be lying if I didn’t say it took way too much resolve to push him off me. I wanted to leave him frustrated and angry. To know that he couldn’t control or manipulate me. But I was so turned on I almost gave in completely. I didn’t want him to stop. I wanted to feel his hands, his mouth, his tongue everywhere. It was overwhelming. Panic was the only thing that gave me the strength to put an end to what was happening.

But now, the memory plagued my thoughts all day. I kept imagining what it would be like to be with him. I couldn’t let that happen. Our mate bond was already a distraction I couldn’t afford. I didn’t think there would be any turning back if we mated. Goddess forbid he marked me.

I struggled to focus on anything all day. I had too much pent-up energy to accomplish anything. I decided to try to get a workout in. I moved some furniture out of the way and started stretching. I would have much rather done some sparring practice, but that was out of the question. So, I worked with what I had and managed to get a decent workout in.

I was sitting on the floor in the middle of the room, panting and sweating heavily, when the door opened. I pushed myself to my feet and moved directly toward the bathroom when Ferrin walked in. I wasn’t in any mood to deal with his antics.

He quickly moved to block my path.

“Willa, I’m sorry,” he said. I glared at him, and he sighed, lifting the bag that Shawn had brought that morning to hand to me. “Shawn said the books are from Adam. He hopes you like science fiction.”

I hesitated before taking the bag from his hands. I still didn’t have anything to say, so I just stared at him. I stood in front of him in a sports bra and leggings, the sweat on my skin cooling me as it began to dry. He took in my current state, desire flashing in his eyes. He quickly closed them, turning his head and taking a deep breath.

“We need to talk,” he said gently. “Please.”

He was trying. His apology was sincere. My mood softened. I nodded and pointed to the bathroom.

“Can I have a second, first?”

“Of course,” he said with a hopeful smile as he stepped aside.

I stepped into the bathroom and grabbed a hand towel. I was wiping myself down when I went back to follow Ferrin to the couch. We took our places on either side, and I waited for him to start.

“I’m sorry, Willa. I don’t want things to be this way. I want you to get to know my people. I want them to know you,” Ferrin stated.

I scoffed. “You do know locking me away neither helps accomplish nor supports that statement.”

“Yes, I know,” Ferrin insisted. “But there are complications.”

“Ferrin, I agreed to give you a chance to prove you weren’t involved with my mom’s death. I wasn’t staking out your territory so I could break in and just attack you. I planned on getting a job that would allow me to find evidence first. I need more answers, too,” I said. “I’m not going to do anything without proof.”

“I know,” Ferrin rushed. “This isn’t just about you crossing our borders or your mother.” He moved closer to me, leaning over and grabbing my hand. “There is a prophecy about my family’s reign.”

“Prophecy?”

He nodded. “It says that a female alpha will ascend and cause the destruction of me and my kingdom. You’re the only female alpha we’ve found.”

I pulled my hand from his and stood up. My heart racing as I moved away from him. “So, you’ve been searching for female alphas. To do what? Stop them from taking your throne? You’re only giving me more reason to believe you went after my mother. She was a female alpha. One who was making progress in Avilvale. A female alpha that reached out to YOU.”

“No, Willa.” He stood to follow me but stopped when I retreated further. “The prophecy wasn’t made until three years after your mother’s death. There was no reason for me to suspect she wanted anything other than peace.”

“Fine, but that still means you still think I’m a threat. So I’m just sitting here waiting for you to figure out how to kill me,” I stated.

“No…”

“This fated mate situation must have really ruined your plans. That’s the information you were talking about. You were trying to figure out how to get rid of me without hurting yourself,” I yelled.

The bond between fated mates was intense. If one died, the other would be weakened. For someone to kill their own mate would be excruciating and dangerous. It’s why I hadn’t tried to reject him and why I’d never accept his while I was still trapped up here with no escape. The bond was the only thing keeping me alive. I felt tears sting my eyes as my chest burned with the pain of being unwanted. Of being disposable.

Ferrin looked horrified at my words.

“No, Willa, that’s not what I’m saying. Yes, you being my mate has made things more complicated, but not because I want you dead. Please,” he pleaded, taking steps toward me, “I need you to listen.”

“Why?” I said, tears rolling down my face. “Either you kill me, or I kill you. Seems pretty futile to me, Ferrin. Neither of us wanted this anyway.”

He advanced at me. “I want you, Willa,” he growled, gripping my face with his hands. “I want you more than anything. I swear to the goddess, I want us. But that’s what puts you in danger.”

I was looking into his eyes. He wasn’t lying, but I still didn’t understand either what he meant or what I was feeling. He rested his forehead on mine.

“I don’t rule alone, Willa. The council has as much power as I do. If I reveal who you are, once they know you are the one from the prophecy, it will be a fight for your life.” He pulled back a little, brushing the tears from my cheeks with his thumbs. “Being my mate means you don’t have to be the one to kill me to fulfill the prophecy. If we are mated and marked, if I ever… There are so many ways they could use you to get to me. I won’t let you die because of who I am.”

“If you ever what?” I asked. It was like he didn’t want to say it, but I knew it was important. His brows furrowed at my question, but he didn’t speak. “If you ever what, Ferrin?”

“If I turned you,” he said.

“If you what?” I stepped back. He wasn’t saying what I thought he was. He couldn’t be.

“If I turned you, Willa. The prophecy states a female alpha will ascend. An ascension means to turn a werewolf into a lycan.”

“But that’s a myth. That’s not possible.”

“It is,” Ferrin said. “It hasn’t happened in a very long time, but it is possible. Only certain bloodlines have the capability, including mine.”

I shook my head. “Well, there’s your answer.” I began pacing. “Either I’m not the one from the prophecy, or it will never be fulfilled because I will never let you turn me. I don’t want to be a lycan.”

Ferrin grabbed me and pulled me against his chest, wrapping his arms around me. “Shh,” he soothed, holding me tightly. A purring sound reverberated from his chest, calming my anxious nerves. “I don’t want to turn you either, Willa. Even if you did want that. The process is extremely dangerous, with no guarantee of success. I would never risk that.”

I slipped my arms around him and buried my face in his chest. I breathed in his scent, letting it sink in, calming the hurricane inside me. I shouldn’t have. He was right. Everything was so complicated. I felt his lips on my head. His fingers drew circles on my back, sending the tingles that were growing more familiar through every inch he touched. The tension slowly eased from my body.

“I’ve told your guards who you are. Who you are to me. Hopefully, it will make things easier.”

I pulled back and looked up at him. “What do you mean?”

He kissed my forehead and pulled me back into his arms. “You’re my mate. Now they know they aren’t guarding a prisoner. They are protecting their future Luna. And they’ll do it with their lives if need be.”

“So you did tell them I was a prisoner,” I said, not ready to acknowledge the part about being a Luna.

Ferrin chuckled softly. “No, but between the restrictions and secrecy and finding out you’re an alpha, they made their own assumptions. It will be different now.”

“And Shawn?” I asked, remembering how I may have cost him his job.

He sighed. “He’ll be back tomorrow morning. I already apologized to him.”

I tightened my arms around him, grateful I hadn’t messed things up with my protectors. Ferrin continued to rub along my back, resting his cheek on my head, holding me firmly to him. I could hear his heartbeat against my ear. It was steady and relaxed. As if holding me gave him as much relief as it did me. I had lost track of how long we stood like that when he groaned, lifting his head with a sigh. I looked up at him.

“Damen needs to see me,” he informed me. He brushed my hair back from my face and leaned in, kissing me gently. “I’ll be back as soon as I can.”

I bounded down the stairs, wanting to get this over with so I could get back to Willa. I didn’t know what Damen wanted, but he said it was important. If it wasn’t, I would have told him to bugger off. I was finally making progress with Willa. I didn’t want to risk that by leaving her too long.I was on the landing one floor down when Damen came around the bend. I nodded toward the suite I had been staying in since we brought Willa here.I shut the door behind us once we entered. “This better be good, Damen.”He looked back at me, taking me in for a minute. I thought he hid a smile, but whatever expression I saw was gone before I could read it.“Dante called. I told him I’d get you. He’s waiting for us to call him back.” Damen pulled a cell phone from his pocket and tapped on the screen. I heard ringing as we waited for the call to connect.“Rhodes,” Dante’s voice came on the line.“Dante, I’ve got Ferrin here. What’s the update?”“I just made it to Moonacre. I’ve scoured through the n

I met with Austin in his quarters to plan the next phase of the operation. We wanted to find the identity of the mole soon, but it was important that they didn’t know we were on to them. We needed them to lead us to anyone who was working against us. We were hoping that whatever Larkin sent us — if he sent us anything — would give us a good lead. We set up a strategy for where to go from there.I had mind-linked Miranda on my way to see Austin and asked her to make something special for Willa for dinner and that I would be joining her. I had pulled her into my office before reaching out to Willa’s security guards and told her everything that was going on. I shouldn’t have been surprised that she had already figured out Willa was my mate. She had seen enough in her lifetime to recognize the mate bond in a second. I was elated when she gave her approval of Willa. She was happy to comply with my request, and I had worked on timing everything right. I was almost up the stairs when she

His lips were on mine in a fevered kiss which quickly deepened as we reveled in the taste of one another. Ferrin’s fingers intertwined with mine, holding both my hands with one of his. The other slipped down my side all the way to my thigh, catching the back of my knee to lift it up and around his waist. His mouth moved to my neck, licking and nipping along my skin. His hand traveled back up, slipping under my shirt, sending electricity straight to my core as he brushed against my bare skin.He palmed my breast, and I moaned as he tweaked my nipple through the fabric of my bra. I woke up to the tingling sensation I was slowly beginning to crave. I opened my eyes to see Ferrin sitting over me. He had a worried expression. I sat up in the bed.“What’s wrong?” I managed to croak, my voice still waking up.“Shh,” Ferrin soothed. “I didn’t mean to startle you. I’m sorry.”I relaxed a little, but the look on his face still had me on edge. He sighed and grabbed my hand, rubbing his thumb along the back.“I have to go out of town today. I may be gone until tomorrow,” he said.“Oh,” I replied, grappling with the relief and disappointment that I suddenly felt simultaneously. “Can I ask where you’re going?”He gave me a soft smile. “I invested in a business venture with a company out in Paslow. Right now, it’s a private endeavor, but if it works out, I can take it to the council. It could be beneficial for the whole kingdom. But they seem to have run into some problems. Four days.It had been four days since I had seen Willa. What should have been a two-day trip to assess the progress of an investment had turned into a peace negotiation. I hated having to leave her after the night we’d had. It had been perfect. Well, nearly perfect. When she asked me to stay with her, it felt like she didn’t think that would ever happen again.I had taken the helicopter back home and was practically running across the castle grounds. I felt like a madman, almost desperate to get back to my mate. There was something in the feeling that had me on edge. It wasn’t just the separation that was tearing at my insides. I had felt it more and more the closer I got to home. Something wasn’t right. When I reached the main entrance and saw Miranda waiting at the door, I knew something was wrong. My heart stopped at the look on her face. It was etched with worry, adding years that made her look more her age.“What’s wrong? What’s happened?” I demanded, rushing to her.She opened

I had Miranda help me get Willa into her pajamas and out of her robe without waking her. I wasn’t surprised, knowing she hadn’t slept for days and the emotional toll her body had endured. I tucked us under the covers and lay next to her, holding her against my chest, too afraid to stop touching her. I could tell the contact was helping, even in her unconscious state. I wasn’t about to take that away again. I stayed there with her for hours. I had drifted off when I was awoken by a familiar voice.“Holy shit.”I opened my eyes to see Rebekah standing by the bed.“And ow,” she said, holding her hand to her heart. “You’ve got a hell of a lot of explaining to do, big brother.”“Yeah, yeah,” I griped as I sat up, gently prying my fingers from Willa’s. “There would be less explaining if you hadn’t decided to live across the country,” I teased.I looked over to see Miranda standing by the dining table. I nodded for her to come and sit with Willa as I climbed out of bed. Rebekah came around t

I pushed myself out of the chair and started moving them back to their place at the table. Ferrin came up behind me and grabbed my waist.“No, you’re going back to bed,” he said as he pulled the chair from my hands.“I’m fine, Ferrin,” I protested. I wasn’t ready to go to sleep. I needed to feel like I was doing something.Ferrin buried his face in my neck, wrapping his arms around my middle. The clock on the nightstand told me I had slept almost the entire morning. It was almost noon. I heard the bathroom door open and turned to see Ferrin walking out. I bit my lip as I looked him up and down. He had just gotten out of the shower and was towel drying his hair, another towel wrapped low around his waist. It was the first time I got to really see him, to admire how damn attractive he really was. Something was really bothering her. And it wasn’t the same anger or disappointment I had felt from her the night before. No, she seemed… nervous around me. Almost scared.I had never seen Willa be timid. I didn’t think she even had it in her.But whatever was causing these feelings, they were only directed at me. She had acted normally toward Rebekah and warmly toward Henry and the kids. She was a picture of sweetness and belonging. My gut clenched, imagining what could possibly have her acting so distant from me. I hated this. I needed to be close to her more than ever right now, and this is when she decided to avoid me. Frustration and even a little anger started to creep up on me. I went to the office there in my apartment and found the carafe of bourbon. I poured a glass and took a few minutes to drink it before I went back to Willa’s room.I gently turned the knob. Opening it, I found Willa standing in front of the full-length mirror in the corner of the room. I could see her fac

I didn’t sleep much longer after Willa left. The unease and anxiety that had been growing through the night had quickly seeped back into my bones. They had lessened for those few short hours I was able to hold her. But when she left, it was like a premonition of what would happen if I screwed everything up — if I made the wrong decision. We had gone through every single detail in Billy’s file that night. Scouring over every piece of information. We had relied heavily on Dante’s expertise, hoping he could shed better light on what we were looking over. With each passing hour, his thoughts were following the same path as Willa’s father’s. And with each passing hour, my mood soured even more. By two in the morning, Dante was so suspicious of what was going on that Damen insisted I fill him in on everything.I had reluctantly complied at the time, but Dante said this information did fill in a lot of gaps in the information. Rebekah was right about the gazebo being a good place to escape and get some privacy away from the castle. We spent a couple hours sitting there while she told me about the people I would be meeting at my introduction dinner. She pulled up pictures from her phone to help me recognize them. By the time we were done, she had gone through over forty people of various importance, and I was feeling a little overwhelmed. But I also felt more confident about the upcoming ordeal. We decided to move on so that she could show me around the grounds a little bit more before we had to meet her family when they arrived. We were walking along the hedges when she asked me what I planned to wear to the dinner. I froze up when she asked.“Crap,” I said. “I actually have to think about that, don’t I?”She laughed softly at my mortified expression. “It’s okay. I would love to help you get ready.”“Okay,” I said with a grateful sigh of relief.“Don’t worry,” she said. “You’ll do just fine. And I highly do

I was really getting tired of having to hide in rooms whenever Ferrin was acting like a jerk. I didn’t regret my decision to stay with him, but all this was becoming a bit suffocating. I couldn’t handle it if Ferrin suddenly started keeping things from me.I paced around the room for a while before I changed into my pajamas and tried to go to sleep. But I only ended up tossing and turning for a couple of hours. Finally, I let out a frustrated huff and threw the blankets off of me. I was still frustrated with Ferrin, and I was mad that I missed him, but I was also worried. It was the kind of worry that just sat in the peripheral. You know it’s there, but you just don’t know why.But then again, we both had a lot to worry about right now. So, I was probably just overreacting.I climbed out of bed and made my way through the joining bathroom and through to Ferrin’s bedroom. I paused a moment to breathe in his scent, which was all over the place. I quickly started to relax. I crawled unde

Not long after Ferrin left, Miranda came in with a load of groceries to stock our little kitchen. She also gave me my phone. Apparently, one of the border guards found it in the woods where Ferrin “saved” me from the attack because it was ringing non-stop. Austin swung by and picked it up before heading back to the castle behind us.It was dead by now, so I popped it on the charger before helping Miranda make some sandwiches. I convinced her to stay and eat with me, knowing she probably hadn’t taken a break all day.“So, what are you going to do with your extra week of paid vacation,” I asked, moving on to my second sandwich after inhaling the first. I definitely must have been healing faster because I was starving.Miranda laughed. “Ferrin said you insisted he gave me a raise. Although it was entirely unnecessary.”“It was absolutely necessary. You have done so much for me since I got here,” I said bluntly, “and I can’t imagine this place would run a fraction as smoothly without you,

Obviously, Damen had mind-linked him as well.“He told me I better get my arse to your office to make sure you haven’ done somethin’ royally stupid,” Arlo replied.Honestly, I didn’t know what I could have done. Unless this was about last night, but all my thoughts of sending Willa away had completely passed now. Everything had been going smoothly since we returned, so I had no idea what was going on. And it was pissing me off as well.I stormed into my office to find Damen and Austin waiting, both looking particularly displeased about something.“What the hell is all this about?” I asked angrily.“You tell us,” Damen said, dropping an accordion folder on my desk dramatically. It only took an instant to recognize it, and I cursed under

I looked at him skeptically. “A rogue werewolf from Avilvale? Even keeping my alpha nature from them, I don’t see them being too happy about that.”“There will be those who will have an opinion,” Ferrin said casually. “But not all of them will hold it against you once they meet you. The council isn’t full of old lycans who are stuck in their ways. We have several that are around my age or have always been on the more progressive side, like my father and me.”“Like Lady Boucher?” I asked, not entirely successful in hiding the bitterness in my voice.
