Austin was already waiting outside when I arrived. I didn’t bother to greet him as I pushed through the door.
“I want Shawn removed from Willa’s protection detail,” I ordered.
“He told me you kicked him off his shift,” Austin said, crossing his arms over his chest. “Why do you want him off? He’s one of the best men we have.
“I don’t care. I want him gone,” I spat.
“No.”
“What?” Why was it so easy for everyone to tell me no all of a sudden?
“We can’t take him off without replacing him with someone else. That’s another person involved in this mess. So, unless you can tell me how he has failed at his job, he stays.”
I glared at him. I realized that Shawn hadn’t actually done anything wrong. He hadn’t even touched Willa. I suppose he was only doing what he was instructed to do. I started to calm down a bit when I noticed the look on Austin’s face. He was doing nothing to hide the smug smirk. I was about to say something when Damen entered the office.
“What’s going on?” he asked, looking between the two of us.
“Oh, Ferrin is going crazy because one of the guards had the nerve to have a conversation with our special guest.”
Damen sighed. “What are you talking about?”
“What did he say to you?” I asked. Austin knew something he wasn’t telling me.
“Our little alpha decided to make the best of the shit situation she’s in,” Austin said, watching as I pushed my hands through my hair and paced the floor. “She introduced herself to her guards.”
My head shot up. “She did what?” I bellowed.
“Calm down. She didn’t say why she was here or who she was. Just exchanged names and simple conversation,” Austin told me. “She’s smart. She’s spoken to four of them already. A couple of them, including Shawn, came to me. They seem to like her. But they wanted to make sure it wasn’t a bad idea to encourage her.”
“So, what seems to be the problem?” Damen asked.
“She’s mine,” I snapped. “They have no business carrying on with her.”
“Carrying on?”
“Okay, Ferrin,” Damen broke in as he took a seat. “What would you like Austin to do? Replace the whole detail with mated males and females? Bring in a whole new crew to learn about you making regular visits to see her? You really think she’ll stay put and not do this same thing again? This is why you agreed to stay away from her, Ferrin.”
“I know,” I bellowed.
“Man,” Austin began, “if you can’t get yourself under control, we’re going to have to figure something else out. Why not just send her away? We can take her to the villa. It’s remote and private.”
“No,” I growled. The thought of Willa leaving the castle made my stomach turn. I looked at my two closest friends. They both had concerned expressions. I released a breath and fell into my office chair. “I can’t do that. The bond is too strong.”
“Then reject her, Ferrin,” Damen insisted.
My chest burned at his words, but I knew there was reason behind the suggestion. If I rejected her, our mate bond would break, and the pull I would feel to be near her would dissipate. I could find someplace safer away from the castle. Maybe even send her back home.
But that would mean I would lose my fated mate. The person the moon goddess had destined me to be with. To continue my lineage. To bear my pups and rule by my side.
If I rejected her, that future would be gone. For both of us.
“No,” I said. Damen started to say something. “I’m not dismissing the option, Damen. I understand it may be necessary at some point. But I’m not ready to give up my mate. Neither should you be so eager to abandon your future Luna.”
Damen stood up as anger flashed across his face. “I am not abandoning her, Ferrin. I am trying to protect her. Even if I have to protect her from your own stupidity.”
The possessiveness that had overtaken me earlier came flooding back. “That’s not your concern, Damen. She’s my mate. I will protect her.”
Austin laughed bitterly. “You just said it yourself, Ferrin. She may be your mate, but she’s our Luna.”
“Do you really think you’re the only one who sees how strong she is?” Damen urged. “She’s been outside a pack for thirteen years, and her aura still radiates alpha authority.”
“Fuck, I’ve only seen her when she was unconscious, and I could see that. She’s already started to tap into that potential,” Austin said. “Her guards aren’t stupid or blind, Ferrin. They wouldn’t be in their position if they were. That’s why Shawn came to me. He knows we suspect her to be the one from the prophecy. But he likes her. As a person,” Austin hurried as I began to react to the statement again. “If I’m being honest, I was planning to go up and have a conversation with her myself if you hadn’t dragged my ass in here.”
“You have to tell her guards,” Damen demanded. “They need to understand. And if what Austin is saying is true, it would only make her safer. Right now, they see her as a potential threat. Any affection they develop toward her will make them conflicted. That won’t bode well in the long run. If they know she is our future Luna, they will devote themselves to her safety. And if that’s not good enough for you, then mate her and mark her.”
“She’s not ready for that,” I said, knowing he was right.
“But you are?” Austin goaded. He was loving this.
“Then you better start making some changes,” Damen said. “We may be able to convince her that you weren’t behind what happened to her mother, but that doesn’t mean she’ll accept you after all of this. She needs to know about the prophecy. She deserves to know why you’re treating her like a dirty secret.”
It was my turn to stand up in anger. I was ready to jump over the desk when he put his hands in the air, his expression changing.
“I’m sorry,” he said. “That was uncalled for, Ferrin. I know that’s not what’s happening. But this mood you’ve been in has us all on edge.”
I took a moment to calm back down. “I’ll talk to her guard detail. And I’ll apologize to Shawn.”
I was pissed at Ferrin’s behavior, but I also felt a sense of satisfaction. My plan had only been to ingratiate myself to the guards so I could coax information out of them, maybe talk one of them into getting me a phone. While I was pretty sure that was out the window, I made sure that Ferrin knew I wasn’t going to make it easy for him.But I was worried about Shawn. I didn’t want to get him, or any of the others, in trouble. I felt bad that I may have cost him his job. If I did, I would do whatever it took to make it right. After I had calmed down and was sure that Ferrin had left, I went to the suite door and knocked. No one responded. I knocked again. Still nothing. He had actually done it. He ordered them not to speak to me.That son of a bitch.Maybe I had let things go too far with that make-out session. But shit, I would be lying if I didn’t say it took way too much resolve to push him off me. I wanted to leave him frustrated and angry. To know that he couldn’t control or mani
I bounded down the stairs, wanting to get this over with so I could get back to Willa. I didn’t know what Damen wanted, but he said it was important. If it wasn’t, I would have told him to bugger off. I was finally making progress with Willa. I didn’t want to risk that by leaving her too long.I was on the landing one floor down when Damen came around the bend. I nodded toward the suite I had been staying in since we brought Willa here.I shut the door behind us once we entered. “This better be good, Damen.”He looked back at me, taking me in for a minute. I thought he hid a smile, but whatever expression I saw was gone before I could read it.“Dante called. I told him I’d get you. He’s waiting for us to call him back.” Damen pulled a cell phone from his pocket and tapped on the screen. I heard ringing as we waited for the call to connect.“Rhodes,” Dante’s voice came on the line.“Dante, I’ve got Ferrin here. What’s the update?”“I just made it to Moonacre. I’ve scoured through the n
I met with Austin in his quarters to plan the next phase of the operation. We wanted to find the identity of the mole soon, but it was important that they didn’t know we were on to them. We needed them to lead us to anyone who was working against us. We were hoping that whatever Larkin sent us — if he sent us anything — would give us a good lead. We set up a strategy for where to go from there.I had mind-linked Miranda on my way to see Austin and asked her to make something special for Willa for dinner and that I would be joining her. I had pulled her into my office before reaching out to Willa’s security guards and told her everything that was going on. I shouldn’t have been surprised that she had already figured out Willa was my mate. She had seen enough in her lifetime to recognize the mate bond in a second. I was elated when she gave her approval of Willa. She was happy to comply with my request, and I had worked on timing everything right. I was almost up the stairs when she
I was laughing as I wiggled against his grip. Then our eyes met and we both sobered up. Both realizing the intimate position we were in. My breath hitched in anticipation, wondering what he would do next. Knowing what I wanted him to do while acknowledging that I shouldn’t.But I was finding it hard to care. This had been one of the best nights of my life. Then it happened. His lips were on mine in a fevered kiss which quickly deepened as we reveled in the taste of one another. Ferrin’s fingers intertwined with mine, holding both my hands with one of his. The other slipped down my side all the way to my thigh, catching the back of my knee to lift it up and around his waist. His mouth moved to my neck, licking and nipping along my skin. His hand traveled back up, slipping under my shirt, sending electricity straight to my core as he brushed against my bare skin.He palmed my breast, and I moaned as he tweaked my nipple through the fabric of my bra. I felt my abs clench as the need betw
I woke up to the tingling sensation I was slowly beginning to crave. I opened my eyes to see Ferrin sitting over me. He had a worried expression. I sat up in the bed.“What’s wrong?” I managed to croak, my voice still waking up.“Shh,” Ferrin soothed. “I didn’t mean to startle you. I’m sorry.”I relaxed a little, but the look on his face still had me on edge. He sighed and grabbed my hand, rubbing his thumb along the back.“I have to go out of town today. I may be gone until tomorrow,” he said.“Oh,” I replied, grappling with the relief and disappointment that I suddenly felt simultaneously. “Can I ask where you’re going?”He gave me a soft smile. “I invested in a business venture with a company out in Paslow. Right now, it’s a private endeavor, but if it works out, I can take it to the council. It could be beneficial for the whole kingdom. But they seem to have run into some problems. I need to go and straighten some things out.”“Okay,” I said with a soft smile. I didn’t really know
Four days.It had been four days since I had seen Willa. What should have been a two-day trip to assess the progress of an investment had turned into a peace negotiation. I hated having to leave her after the night we’d had. It had been perfect. Well, nearly perfect. When she asked me to stay with her, it felt like she didn’t think that would ever happen again.I had taken the helicopter back home and was practically running across the castle grounds. I felt like a madman, almost desperate to get back to my mate. There was something in the feeling that had me on edge. It wasn’t just the separation that was tearing at my insides. I had felt it more and more the closer I got to home. Something wasn’t right. When I reached the main entrance and saw Miranda waiting at the door, I knew something was wrong. My heart stopped at the look on her face. It was etched with worry, adding years that made her look more her age.“What’s wrong? What’s happened?” I demanded, rushing to her.She opened
I had Miranda help me get Willa into her pajamas and out of her robe without waking her. I wasn’t surprised, knowing she hadn’t slept for days and the emotional toll her body had endured. I tucked us under the covers and lay next to her, holding her against my chest, too afraid to stop touching her. I could tell the contact was helping, even in her unconscious state. I wasn’t about to take that away again. I stayed there with her for hours. I had drifted off when I was awoken by a familiar voice.“Holy shit.”I opened my eyes to see Rebekah standing by the bed.“And ow,” she said, holding her hand to her heart. “You’ve got a hell of a lot of explaining to do, big brother.”“Yeah, yeah,” I griped as I sat up, gently prying my fingers from Willa’s. “There would be less explaining if you hadn’t decided to live across the country,” I teased.I looked over to see Miranda standing by the dining table. I nodded for her to come and sit with Willa as I climbed out of bed. Rebekah came around t
Ferrin walked his sister out of the room. She was right when she said I would feel tired. I was exhausted, but I felt good. At least I felt better than I had the past couple days. I pushed myself out of the chair and started moving them back to their place at the table. Ferrin came up behind me and grabbed my waist.“No, you’re going back to bed,” he said as he pulled the chair from my hands.“I’m fine, Ferrin,” I protested. I wasn’t ready to go to sleep. I needed to feel like I was doing something.Ferrin buried his face in my neck, wrapping his arms around my middle. He took a deep breath. “But I’m not,” he said gently. “You scared the hell out of me.”I leaned against him. “I’m sorry. That’s never happened to me before.”He nodded, lifting up to kiss me on the temple. “It’s our bond. The stronger it gets, the stronger we both get. I’m so sorry, Willa. I should have seen this coming. I should have known this would happen.”“You couldn’t have known. This is all new for both of us.” I
Something was really bothering her. And it wasn’t the same anger or disappointment I had felt from her the night before. No, she seemed… nervous around me. Almost scared.I had never seen Willa be timid. I didn’t think she even had it in her.But whatever was causing these feelings, they were only directed at me. She had acted normally toward Rebekah and warmly toward Henry and the kids. She was a picture of sweetness and belonging. My gut clenched, imagining what could possibly have her acting so distant from me. I hated this. I needed to be close to her more than ever right now, and this is when she decided to avoid me. Frustration and even a little anger started to creep up on me. I went to the office there in my apartment and found the carafe of bourbon. I poured a glass and took a few minutes to drink it before I went back to Willa’s room.I gently turned the knob. Opening it, I found Willa standing in front of the full-length mirror in the corner of the room. I could see her fac
I didn’t sleep much longer after Willa left. The unease and anxiety that had been growing through the night had quickly seeped back into my bones. They had lessened for those few short hours I was able to hold her. But when she left, it was like a premonition of what would happen if I screwed everything up — if I made the wrong decision. We had gone through every single detail in Billy’s file that night. Scouring over every piece of information. We had relied heavily on Dante’s expertise, hoping he could shed better light on what we were looking over. With each passing hour, his thoughts were following the same path as Willa’s father’s. And with each passing hour, my mood soured even more. By two in the morning, Dante was so suspicious of what was going on that Damen insisted I fill him in on everything.I had reluctantly complied at the time, but Dante said this information did fill in a lot of gaps in the information. He went over everything again once he knew more of what we were l
Rebekah was right about the gazebo being a good place to escape and get some privacy away from the castle. We spent a couple hours sitting there while she told me about the people I would be meeting at my introduction dinner. She pulled up pictures from her phone to help me recognize them. By the time we were done, she had gone through over forty people of various importance, and I was feeling a little overwhelmed. But I also felt more confident about the upcoming ordeal. We decided to move on so that she could show me around the grounds a little bit more before we had to meet her family when they arrived. We were walking along the hedges when she asked me what I planned to wear to the dinner. I froze up when she asked.“Crap,” I said. “I actually have to think about that, don’t I?”She laughed softly at my mortified expression. “It’s okay. I would love to help you get ready.”“Okay,” I said with a grateful sigh of relief.“Don’t worry,” she said. “You’ll do just fine. And I highly do
I was really getting tired of having to hide in rooms whenever Ferrin was acting like a jerk. I didn’t regret my decision to stay with him, but all this was becoming a bit suffocating. I couldn’t handle it if Ferrin suddenly started keeping things from me.I paced around the room for a while before I changed into my pajamas and tried to go to sleep. But I only ended up tossing and turning for a couple of hours. Finally, I let out a frustrated huff and threw the blankets off of me. I was still frustrated with Ferrin, and I was mad that I missed him, but I was also worried. It was the kind of worry that just sat in the peripheral. You know it’s there, but you just don’t know why.But then again, we both had a lot to worry about right now. So, I was probably just overreacting.I climbed out of bed and made my way through the joining bathroom and through to Ferrin’s bedroom. I paused a moment to breathe in his scent, which was all over the place. I quickly started to relax. I crawled unde
Not long after Ferrin left, Miranda came in with a load of groceries to stock our little kitchen. She also gave me my phone. Apparently, one of the border guards found it in the woods where Ferrin “saved” me from the attack because it was ringing non-stop. Austin swung by and picked it up before heading back to the castle behind us.It was dead by now, so I popped it on the charger before helping Miranda make some sandwiches. I convinced her to stay and eat with me, knowing she probably hadn’t taken a break all day.“So, what are you going to do with your extra week of paid vacation,” I asked, moving on to my second sandwich after inhaling the first. I definitely must have been healing faster because I was starving.Miranda laughed. “Ferrin said you insisted he gave me a raise. Although it was entirely unnecessary.”“It was absolutely necessary. You have done so much for me since I got here,” I said bluntly, “and I can’t imagine this place would run a fraction as smoothly without you,
Arlo was still waiting outside when I left our quarters, but his expression was a bit less jovial than it was a few moments ago.“What did you do to get Damen’s knickers in such a bunch?”“What makes you think I did anything?” I asked as he followed me. Obviously, Damen had mind-linked him as well.“He told me I better get my arse to your office to make sure you haven’ done somethin’ royally stupid,” Arlo replied.Honestly, I didn’t know what I could have done. Unless this was about last night, but all my thoughts of sending Willa away had completely passed now. Everything had been going smoothly since we returned, so I had no idea what was going on. And it was pissing me off as well.I stormed into my office to find Damen and Austin waiting, both looking particularly displeased about something.“What the hell is all this about?” I asked angrily.“You tell us,” Damen said, dropping an accordion folder on my desk dramatically. It only took an instant to recognize it, and I cursed under
I picked Willa’s dress off the couch and helped her slip it up her arms. She went to start buttoning it up, but we both quickly realized there were several buttons missing. I chuckled as her shoulders fell with a sigh, giving me a disappointed look.“Oops,” I said with a shrug, not even about to hide my grin.“If you keep this up, I’m going to run out of things to wear real quick,” she said, shoving my arm playfully.“That’s not exactly an incentive to be more careful,” I replied.“Ha ha,” she said. “But I don’t have any…”I stopped her with a look.“Miranda.” She caught on quickly, shaking her head with a grin.“I told her to put everything in your room for now. We’ll move it whenever you want.”“She really does deserve a raise, you know?” Willa said as she started towards the bedroom.“Already taken care of,” I called after her. “Plus an extra week of paid vacation.”She turned around, backing into the room without skipping a step. “That’s my man,” she said with a wink before closin
I looked at him skeptically. “A rogue werewolf from Avilvale? Even keeping my alpha nature from them, I don’t see them being too happy about that.”“There will be those who will have an opinion,” Ferrin said casually. “But not all of them will hold it against you once they meet you. The council isn’t full of old lycans who are stuck in their ways. We have several that are around my age or have always been on the more progressive side, like my father and me.”“Like Lady Boucher?” I asked, not entirely successful in hiding the bitterness in my voice. I don’t know why she kept popping into my head since I had met her in the hallway. She just made me feel off.“No, the Boucher family tends to lean toward the old ways where lycans’ status was definitively superior.”“I’m surprised the council isn’t insisting you mate with her,” I said.Ferrin made a face. “They know any chance of that ever happening died a long time ago.”“What do you mean?” I pulled away, jealousy spiking through me. “Fer
My chest was swollen with pride in my mate. All I wanted to do was get her behind closed doors and show her how damn perfect she was. I was annoyed that Desiree had the audacity to speak to her Luna the way she had. By all rights, I should have been pissed. And I was at first. But after watching Willa eviscerate her in such a concise, effective, and tactful way, I couldn’t bring myself to care that much anymore.I thought back to that night I had imagined what would happen when the two of them met. I was in no way disappointed. And now, knowing Willa’s skill in a fight, Desiree would learn quickly not to disrespect my mate again. We finally made it to our private quarters, but we still had an entourage that I only felt a little guilty about wanting to get rid of as soon as possible. But I really did want Rebekah to take a look at Willa’s leg. And Damen, Miranda, and I had to discuss what was going to happen next so Willa could get an idea of what to expect over the next few days.My q
