Chapter 21: Willa

Ferrin walked his sister out of the room. She was right when she said I would feel tired. I was exhausted, but I felt good. At least I felt better than I had the past couple days. I pushed myself out of the chair and started moving them back to their place at the table. Ferrin came up behind me and grabbed my waist.“No, you’re going back to bed,” he said as he pulled the chair from my hands.“I’m fine, Ferrin,” I protested. I wasn’t ready to go to sleep. I needed to feel like I was doing something.Ferrin buried his face in my neck, wrapping his arms around my middle. He took a deep breath. “But I’m not,” he said gently. “You scared the hell out of me.”I leaned against him. “I’m sorry. That’s never happened to me before.”He nodded, lifting up to kiss me on the temple. “It’s our bond. The stronger it gets, the stronger we both get. I’m so sorry, Willa. I should have seen this coming. I should have known this would happen.”“You couldn’t have known. This is all new for both of us.” I

Chapter 22: Willa

I opened my eyes slowly, bracing myself against the sunlight shining through the window. I stretched my arms, rolling over to find the other side of the bed empty. The clock on the nightstand told me I had slept almost the entire morning. It was almost noon. I heard the bathroom door open and turned to see Ferrin walking out. I bit my lip as I looked him up and down. He had just gotten out of the shower and was towel drying his hair, another towel wrapped low around his waist. It was the first time I got to really see him, to admire how damn attractive he really was. I sat up in the bed, not wanting to miss anything as he moved through the room. He reached into the closet and pulled out a shirt, catching me watching when he turned back to the room. A cheeky grin spread across his face as he moved in my direction.“Good morning, gorgeous,” he said, leaning down to give me a kiss.“Mmm, I could say the same to you,” I replied. He chuckled as he went to the dresser and pulled a pair of b

Chapter 23: Willa

I was chewing on my lip as I thought about what he was saying. I wasn’t sure how I felt about the idea of having a constant entourage. Was he going to have people following me around all the time? That seemed a bit restrictive. I just wanted to see my family and friends. I didn’t want a parade of babysitters.Ferrin tugged my lip from between my teeth, lifting my chin as he started pushing me to the bathroom.“It’s only temporary, Willa. Once you get out of here and get settled in, you’ll be where you were meant to be. No more isolation and plenty of purpose, okay?” he asked, kissing my forehead when I nodded. “Now, go take your shower. I’ll be back soon.”I took my time in the shower, thinking about how much my life had changed in such a short time. I know that finding your fated mate often turns your life upside down, but dang. Even my dad didn’t have to deal with this much change. He may have never been a part of pack life before, but at least he grew up around them enough to gain

Chapter 24: Ferrin

“We have to make sure it’s safe first,” I said, looking toward Rebekah.“I think she’ll be okay for some time,” she said with a smile. “I’ll stick around a few more days to see if I can gauge a timeline, but I don’t see it wearing off for a while.”I squeezed Willa’s thigh, happy we could put all this behind us soon.“So, how do you suggest we get me out of here?” Willa asked eagerly.Damen smirked. “That’s the easy part, really. We can get you out the same way we got you in. It’s where you’re going to go afterward. It would be better if you both could disappear for a day or two,” Damen said.“We can come up with some errand that Ferrin got called off for. But we’ll have to coordinate it because it’ll have to be the public story of how you two met,” Austin said. “So you better make it damn good.”“We’ll let you two discuss that,” Damen offered as he stood. “But I suggest we move soon. I’d prefer tonight, in the early hours of the morning.”“We’ll be ready,” I said. “I’ll mind-link you

Chapter 25: Willa

It was still dark out when Ferrin woke me a few hours later. The clock said it was just past three in the morning. He was already dressed and ready to go. He told me to go ahead and get dressed while he went to make sure everyone was ready. I said not to worry about packing. Miranda had already taken care of everything.I pushed the covers off, wondering if that woman ever slept. I pulled on a pair of leggings and a T-shirt and tied my hair back out of my face. I didn’t have to wait long before Ferrin returned with Damen.“You ready?”I nodded. “Yep.”“Okay, Damen is going to go ahead of us to make sure the coast stays clear. We’re going to take you through the servants’ passages and out a back exit. Once we’re out of the castle, we’ll have to walk for a while. You up for that?”I laughed. “I’ve been trapped in a tower for over a week. What do you think?”He smiled and shook his head. “Alright then, let’s go.”He grabbed my hand and led me out the door. I don’t know why I was so nervo

Chapter 26: Willa

We made it to the cabin as the sun was beginning to rise. I could tell why Ferrin thought it would be a safe place for us to stay. It was well off of any main roads, tucked back into the woods with a small lake out the back and no evidence of any other structures nearby. It was also gorgeous. This wasn’t just some cabin like I had pictured. I was thinking of a small, seldom-used cabin that hunters or hikers would take shelter in. Not really belonging to anyone but was kept up by those who passed through on occasion to keep it usable. This was not that. This was clearly well-maintained. It was a stunning two-story, three-bedroom log cabin with all the amenities, including a hot tub on the back porch that led down to a firepit near the shoreline. I had a feeling it also belonged to his family. Or, at the very least, he knew the owner very well.I stood on the balcony off the upstairs master bedroom, wondering if I would ever get used to this. I was content with the minimalistic lifestyl

Chapter 37: Ferrin

My chest was swollen with pride in my mate. All I wanted to do was get her behind closed doors and show her how damn perfect she was. I was annoyed that Desiree had the audacity to speak to her Luna the way she had. By all rights, I should have been pissed. And I was at first. But after watching Willa eviscerate her in such a concise, effective, and tactful way, I couldn’t bring myself to care that much anymore.I thought back to that night I had imagined what would happen when the two of them met. I was in no way disappointed. And now, knowing Willa’s skill in a fight, Desiree would learn quickly not to disrespect my mate again. We finally made it to our private quarters, but we still had an entourage that I only felt a little guilty about wanting to get rid of as soon as possible. But I really did want Rebekah to take a look at Willa’s leg. And Damen, Miranda, and I had to discuss what was going to happen next so Willa could get an idea of what to expect over the next few days.My q

Chapter 38: Willa

I looked at him skeptically. “A rogue werewolf from Avilvale? Even keeping my alpha nature from them, I don’t see them being too happy about that.”“There will be those who will have an opinion,” Ferrin said casually. “But not all of them will hold it against you once they meet you. The council isn’t full of old lycans who are stuck in their ways. We have several that are around my age or have always been on the more progressive side, like my father and me.”“Like Lady Boucher?” I asked, not entirely successful in hiding the bitterness in my voice. I don’t know why she kept popping into my head since I had met her in the hallway. She just made me feel off.“No, the Boucher family tends to lean toward the old ways where lycans’ status was definitively superior.”“I’m surprised the council isn’t insisting you mate with her,” I said.Ferrin made a face. “They know any chance of that ever happening died a long time ago.”“What do you mean?” I pulled away, jealousy spiking through me. “Fer

Chapter 39: Ferrin

I picked Willa’s dress off the couch and helped her slip it up her arms. She went to start buttoning it up, but we both quickly realized there were several buttons missing. I chuckled as her shoulders fell with a sigh, giving me a disappointed look.“Oops,” I said with a shrug, not even about to hide my grin.“If you keep this up, I’m going to run out of things to wear real quick,” she said, shoving my arm playfully.“That’s not exactly an incentive to be more careful,” I replied.“Ha ha,” she said. “But I don’t have any…”I stopped her with a look.“Miranda.” She caught on quickly, shaking her head with a grin.“I told her to put everything in your room for now. We’ll move it whenever you want.”“She really does deserve a raise, you know?” Willa said as she started towards the bedroom.“Already taken care of,” I called after her. “Plus an extra week of paid vacation.”She turned around, backing into the room without skipping a step. “That’s my man,” she said with a wink before closin

Chapter 40: Ferrin

Arlo was still waiting outside when I left our quarters, but his expression was a bit less jovial than it was a few moments ago.“What did you do to get Damen’s knickers in such a bunch?”“What makes you think I did anything?” I asked as he followed me. Obviously, Damen had mind-linked him as well.“He told me I better get my arse to your office to make sure you haven’ done somethin’ royally stupid,” Arlo replied.Honestly, I didn’t know what I could have done. Unless this was about last night, but all my thoughts of sending Willa away had completely passed now. Everything had been going smoothly since we returned, so I had no idea what was going on. And it was pissing me off as well.I stormed into my office to find Damen and Austin waiting, both looking particularly displeased about something.“What the hell is all this about?” I asked angrily.“You tell us,” Damen said, dropping an accordion folder on my desk dramatically. It only took an instant to recognize it, and I cursed under
