When I walked into the dining room the next morning, only my father and Ciara were seated, having their usual morning coffee. I said a very quick hello to both of them and crossed over to the kitchen where I found Jackie standing by the stove, turning something in a big pot. She immediately turned her head towards the entrance and after sighting me, offered a small smile as a form of greeting.

“Since when do you cook?” I asked, ignoring her greeting and going over to pour for myself a cup of coffee. She shrugged her shoulders indifferently but continued to carry out her chore.

After pouring some coffee into my cup, I walked over to get some sweetener from the counter close to the stove and that was when I saw the mixture Jackie was stirring in the pot. She turned to look at me with a sorry look on her face but without giving her the opportunity to say a word, I dashed into the dining room and stared hard at my father.
