~ Harper’s POV ~
Call it a gut feeling but I knew the exact moment Zara reached the pack house. The awareness began as a slow tingling sensation that spread slowly to my fingertips, which itched to touch her.
I was sitting in my office when I sensed her in front of the pack house, which could only mean one thing, the mate bond was getting stronger. I could feel it getting stronger, maybe the silver Zara was wearing wasn't as effective anymore.
Before I knew what I was doing, I was bounding down the steps as fast as I could to see her. It didn't matter that I had only seen and talked to her a couple of hours ago, I just wanted to be where she was.
I stopped in my tracks when I reached the landing of the pack house and stared at the car Zara was sitting in. With that rogue Ethan. I could see they were looking at each other and it made me uncomfortable, like I was intruding on a private moment and my wolf hated the feeling.
They were staring intently into each other's eyes, not talking, and I felt my spine shiver in response. A rather unpleasant shiver.
It seemed as if at any moment either of them would just lean towards the other and they would kiss. The vivid picture of them kissing in front of me sent a fiery sensation through my veins and before I knew it, I had climbed the stairs and rapped hard on the car's window. It was the only thing I could come up with at such short notice which would break the intense stare-down between them.
Well, besides throwing the door open and tearing Ethan's throat apart with my bare hands. That would be complicated.
They immediately broke out of the trance they were in. I turned around and without looking back at either of them, went inside the pack house.
I might have been able to restrain myself from blowing Ethan apart at that moment, but that doesn't mean my wolf wasn't itching to do so. I climbed up the stairs again as fast as I could and reached my office.
I took several deep breaths to calm myself down but my wolf kept edging me to go after Ethan. It took me several minutes to make him understand that killing Ethan would not help me at all. If I killed Ethan now, Zara would kill me.
I had planned to be there for Zara's first training session and watch over her, to see how she was doing and give her some pointers that she would be able to use in case she needed to defend herself but I never thought I would be thrown off course by that rogue.
I slumped down on my desk to calm my wolf down. He was still restless and wanted to go after Ethan. He was a werewolf, which meant he knew what mates meant, so why was he acting like this?! Granted, he was also Zara's batair, or so he said, but there's a limit to his protection.
I laid my head down on the hard desk, contemplating about what I should do now. I wanted to watch Zara train amongst the pack members, so even if I watched her through a window, I would do it.
I quickly walked over to a window that would give me a full view of the backyard below and I saw the members running laps around the backyard. I chuckled as I recalled how grueling it used to be because the warrior demanded I and Aiden run another ten rounds because we were going to be the alpha and beta of the pack respectively. The warrior had said that it would inspire other wolves to do their best and would inspire loyalty.
I clenched my fists as the image of Aiden lying in a hospital bed flashed behind my eyes. Before coming here, I had visited his doctor and he was hopeful about Aiden's recovery. His wolf was healthy and it was only a matter of time before he woke up.
Aiden has been by my side for as long as I can remember and to not see him every time, I look over my shoulder, a part of me feels incomplete. I knew I valued Aiden but I never fully understood the impact of his presence in my life before.
I opened my eyes to watch the wolves run. My eyes immediately sought out Zara, who wasn't at the last of the line. My eyes narrowed as I watched her run, her form looked correct and her muscles tense. It was surprising to see that she was ahead of some werewolves and I felt proud as I watched her complete her round. She sat down on the ground and fought to catch her breath and I felt a smile tug at the corner of my lips.
I eyed the young wolf who had completed his rounds last and had to run five more. I turned away from the window and leaned against the wall. I clenched my eyes shut and tried to control my breathing. I would have to get used to the fact that I was going to see Zara around that rogue and I would have to work hard to school my emotions and keep a calm facade.
After a few deep breaths, I climbed down the steps and walked towards the backyard of the pack house, where the wolves would now be practicing hand-to-hand combat.
I crossed my arms over my chest as I saw how all the wolves had broken up into groups of two and were practicing combat. My eyes moved over the groups to find where Zara was.
My eyes narrowed as I saw her circling Ethan, which was wrong. Ethan and Zara didn't have the same skill set. The warrior I had assigned to watch over the practice sessions would have seen to it that both Ethan and Zara would be partnered with people of their skill set. I frowned as I noticed that the warrior was talking over the phone and so, I took off in their direction to split them apart.
I paused in my way as I watched them land and dodge blow at each other. My eyes followed every movement Zara made, the flex of her shoulders, her stance, and the grip of her legs. She moved fluidly and I suddenly understood why she had that sly look on her face when I suggested she join the training session today. It was because she had already started training herself and wanted me to show how well she was doing.
As if sensing the weight of my gaze, she turned around and her eyes met mine. She seemed a little breathless, which was understandable because she was a human fighting a wolf. She looked flushed and her face was taut with concentration. Her muscles subconsciously relaxed when our eyes met and her lips tipped up in a smile. I felt pride bloom in my chest as I saw how well she kept up with Ethan.
"Alpha, could you please help us with this?" I peeled my eyes away from Zara to look at two girls who were struggling to perform a defense maneuver. I stepped forward and gave them a few pointers, where they should plant their feet and how they should weave their hips to deliver the motion perfectly. I moved from group to group, imparting advice and congratulating the wolves who needed it.
I had moved quite a distance from where I had started but it was no surprise when my ears caught on to Zara's boisterous laugh. I turned around and walked a couple of steps in her direction to look at what she was laughing about.
The fire burned beneath my skin as I watched her lying on the ground with that rogue on top of her. They were both laughing and I felt a white-hot rage bubble inside me. My wolf roared inside my head.
I knew my wolf was getting anxious because my mate was under another wolf in front of the whole pack. Jealousy burned inside him. Catching on to his intentions, I immediately turned around so that I wouldn't be able to see them directly.
My wolf growled inside my head and fought with me for total control. I tried talking to get him to calm down but he snarled at me and pushed me away to get control. I resisted as best as I could but it was no surprise when I hunched forward and felt myself shifting into my white wolf.
I growled out loud. Which halted their laughter and everyone on the grounds turned to look at me. My wolf was eager to get the two of them apart and he didn't care in what way.
Before I could reel him in, my wolf bounded towards the pair on the grounds who were still laughing, and with all the precision of a trained killer, I clamped my jaws around Ethan's shoulder and threw him away from my mate. My wolf growled in pride as I watched him fly away and land against a tree.
If he knew what was good for him, he would stay down and not instigate my wolf in a power struggle. I wasn't disappointed though, when he stood up and turned into his midnight black wolf and growled back at me. The fact that we had the exact opposite coat color wasn't lost on me.
The black wolf in front of me didn't look even the least bit threatening to me and so I confidently prepared for a fighting stance when I saw him run towards me. If Ethan was exactly who he says he is, he knew that there was no way he would win this fight against me but I guess I would have to give him so props for trying.
I snarled at him and bit him when he came close to me. We writhed and tried to bite chunks of flesh from each other. All thoughts of propriety went away as I bit into him and his blood streaked my white fur.
I didn't care that my pack was watching me fight with Ethan. Hell, they knew that Zara was my mate and they would expect nothing less from me because seeing your mate with another person was just beyond unacceptable to your wolf.
He managed to get on my back and it took me a second to get him off and throw him away from me. He landed on all fours and poised to strike me again but before he could run towards me, I growled at him, infusing my alpha power in it, forcing him to submit.
Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed every pack member go down on their knees. They couldn't have possibly neglected the alpha command in my growl. It irked me that Ethan still stood tall, even though I could see his wolf fighting against his intuition to submit to me.
I growled again, infusing my alpha compulsion, and huffed in pride when Ethan finally bowed into submission in front of me. I stood tall for a second or two and rejoiced in the fact that he had submitted to me.
My eyes snapped to Zara, the only person who was oblivious to the alpha authority in my voice. I couldn't fathom what she was thinking and because my wolf was still feeling restless, I turned around and ran towards the woods.
~ Harper’s POV ~I didn't look back, I just couldn't. My wolf was going mad and I knew that if I had not forced my wolf to run away, he would have torn apart that filthy rogue, consequences be damned. I closed my eyes, desperately trying to erase the picture of Ethan lying on top of Zara but I couldn't do it. The image was burned in my mind and it was torture like no other. I wanted to run away from all my problems, just for a second, and pretend that I was a normal eighteen-year-old teenage guy whose only problem in life was as inconsequential as choosing which girl to take to prom. I huffed as I realized that prom hadn't even been in the deepest recesses of my mind. I had so many responsibilities that the mundane task of going to the prom had been lost to me. Maybe if I was a normal eighteen-year-old and not this big white alpha, I wouldn't be feeling this overwhelming pain in my chest. This burning pain made me want to curl up on the forest floor and lament. I wondered about dif
"My name is Aaron and who are you?" His eyes took me in from head to toe and I resisted the urge to flinch so as not to show him any weakness. "Shouldn't I be asking that question? After all, I'm the one sitting here, strapped to a seat." I replied sarcastically. "I'll be perfectly happy to answer your question but first I'd like to know why you were in the alpha's room in the first place." My eyes widened at his words. What the hell had I gotten myself into?"How do you know it was the alpha's room?" I blurted the words out before thinking and snapped my jaw shut as soon as I realized what I had done."Ah, so you do know about werewolves." My eyes widened at my mistake and he smirked at me. He had played me and I had unknowingly walked right into his trap. "I had a suspicion that you knew about the existence of werewolves and now I have the proof." I just stared blankly at him, lest I give away any important information but then I realized that instead of giving away information,
"Aaron is my twin brother." She nodded and tilted her head to watch me again. "But you didn't know that, did you?"She tilted her head to look at me and waited for my answer but I didn't need to say anything. I knew that she knew that she had given away some information I hadn't known which may or may not prove to be detrimental to this pack of rogues. "Well, it's not like it matters. You won't be spilling any secrets while being strapped in a chair." She stood up from the ground and light spilled from behind me, which meant that the door of the room had opened. In the sliver of light, I could observe that like her whole countenance, the girls' eyes were fairly light and as light shined on them, they seemed to glow. I watched as she stiffened when her eyes met the person who was standing at the doorway of the room behind my back. The shadow that was being cast into the room signified that it was a man, probably even Aaron who had come around to check up on me and found his sister h
~ Harper’s POV ~I was sitting in the alpha's office, feeling completely lost. I had never felt like this before. This was a horrible feeling, this emptiness in my chest. Sure, I had been on the verge of losing people I loved but nothing had compared to this. I had almost lost my mother and my baby sister during labor, my father in the rogue attack, and my son and friend Natalie in labor, but all of these instances combined didn't make me feel as terrified as I was feeling now. The silence in my office seemed so haunting. Every particle of dust suspended in the air made my eyes water. Every little noise, even the sound of my breathing made me feel as if my ears were bleeding. My heart had taken on an irregular rhythm, beating fast for a few minutes when I imagined all the possible places Zara could be and then my heart calmed down when I forced my thoughts towards tactical leadership and planning to find Zara. When I noticed Zara's bracelet dangling in Ethan's hand, a cord had snapp
~ Harper’s POV ~"How do you know it's going to work?" I asked, uncertain about this new idea even though it somehow made sense to me. "I don't know if it's going to work but I am saying there's no harm in trying it. All you need to do is turn into your wolf. Your wolf will feel the pull of the mate bond physically, which will hopefully lead you to Zara's location." Ethan stated forcefully and I closed my eyes in exasperation. I had hoped that the trackers would have some clue about Zara's whereabouts but when they had turned up with nothing, the situation had become more dire. We didn't even know if she had taken off herself or if she was taken by someone. Did the rogues take her or was it some usual and random human kidnapping? All these questions were eating away at me and the uncertainty of the situation was making both me and my wolf incredibly frustrated. "I suppose there's no harm in trying," I said, my mind trying to run in different directions to solve this situation as so
My feet were going numb. I tried to wiggle my toes to feel something, but I couldn't feel my legs at all. For hours, I had been strapped to this chair and the only time I had been allowed to walk was when I was roughly manhandled and asked to "take a piss", in those exact words. Except for that, I had been forced to remain in the exact position for hours and my body was starting to ache and cramp in places that never ached or even some muscles I never knew existed. I had nothing better to do than think about the parts of my body that were in pain. The room I had been kept in was empty for now and I was thankful for it. As grateful as I was for Addison's company, she was one of the people who were keeping me captive here. I tried to shift under the thick rope binding me, hoping that it would loosen a little and make breathing and reduce the numbing feeling in my body. The door creaked open behind me and I instantly stopped struggling, determined to not show any restlessness in front
~ Harper’s POV ~ The last time I had been shot with an arrow laced with wolfsbane, I had collapsed on the spot and went into a coma for a few days, besides the agonizing pain. This time it was different. I have a few theories, maybe the arrow was laced with less wolfsbane than the earlier one or maybe my wolf had somehow developed an immunity to that particular amount of the poison after one attack. The latter was unlikely but in the case of white alphas, anything seemed possible. There wasn't exactly a guide to how white alphas would react to different poisons in the world. Or maybe it was my wolf fighting against the poison because he was still hopeful about rescuing Zara, even though a part of us knew that she had to have been far away now. We had been lying helplessly on the ground for nearly twenty minutes and the truck was nowhere in sight. I shifted into my human form because of the immense pain in my leg. Shifting would also allow me and my wolf to heal better. I pulled out
~ Harper’s POV ~ A smart man learns from his mistakes and considering I have to lead a whole pack of werewolves, I consider a relatively smart person, who learns from his past mistakes. One of those grave mistakes was to underestimate the importance of Aaron in the rogue wolf pack. If the rogues risked their lives to rescue him from the pack jails, then it would be likely that they would do it again. So, I wasn't going to let it happen, even if I had to guard his prison door myself. "So, what do you plan to do now?" I looked up from my office desk to look at Ethan. "I am going to rest for a while so that my wolf can flush the wolfsbane out of my system," I said and watched him take a seat across the desk. "Then I'm going to shift into my wolf and run where the mate bond leads me." "And what about Aaron?" He asked and I stood up from my desk. "I'm going to look over his accommodation. Want to come with me?" I asked and Ethan nodded. We had established a strange dynamic between our
Bonus Chapter: Natalie's POVI knew something was wrong when I didn't get my period for two months. I never had a smooth cycle so I wasn't troubled when they didn't happen the first time but their absence in the second consecutive month got me worried. My body had undergone certain changes I knew weren't normal and I was worrying myself to death, thinking about some kind of deadly disease that would kill me in a few months. Even though I knew that my immunity system was way better than a normal human's, I couldn't help but entertain such thoughts. I didn't tell anyone of my concerns as I didn't want anyone to worry because of my baseless concerns. Nonetheless, I booked the first possible appointment with the pack gynaecologist. I had prepared myself for everything, a tumour in my ovary, internal hemorrhaging of my uterus that would result in an immediate hysterectomy, or even breast cancer which would again lead to a complete mammectomy. But as I sat in front of the doctor and she ex
Bonus Chapter: Ethan's POVWhen you grow up as a werewolf, all you ever hear is the word 'mate', because people around you can't stop talking about them. Some elders talk about mates with a dazed but happy look in their eyes and you can easily tell how much they love their mates. When young people talked to mates, you could practically feel their longing and the love they had for their mates. When teenagers talk about mates, you can feel their desperation to find their mates and be one with them. Rejections in my pack were extremely rare and every werewolf lived happily ever after with their fated mates. There were no doubts, no questions asked because your mate could be the exact fit of your soul, your second half, and the one who you are supposed to live as long as you live. Growing up and watching my parents and pack members, this is all I had watched and learned, that a mate was for you to love, hold and protect till the end of your days. When you're brought up like that, the ide
EPILOGUE 3: HARPER'S POV (TEN YEARS LATER)It was three years ago when Mason was first teased by a classmate about the unusual arrangement of his parents. I had always known that as he was growing up, he became especially attuned to the fact that the way his family lived wasn't exactly normal by usual standards. There were so many unusual factors that they were bound to seem different to him and I wasn't exactly prepared for how Mason was coping with how different his family seemed to be from any other family in the pack. As the future alpha, it was essential to be a part of the pack because other people were often intimidated by the power you had and by the power you would have in the future. My father always taught me to be a part of the pack but always remember that you could never essentially be a part of the pack. And this is exactly what I had taught Mason to do; I had asked him to play with all the other wolf kids but always remember that in the future, he will be responsible
Epilogue 2: Zara's POVI could feel everyone's eyes on me, which instantly made me nervous. I hated feeling this way but I wasn't sure I could help it. I hated being the centre of attention and walking down an aisle and standing in front of all the pack members to take part in the Luna ceremony was exactly that, being the centre of attention. Harper had told me that since I was the true luna of the pack, the ceremony would be a little different and I wasn't sure how that would affect me as I hadn't exactly attended Natalie's ceremony. I weakly smiled at all the pack members assembled in the pack grounds and started walking down the aisle towards the raised stage at the front of the pack. I was barefoot to pay homage to the natural aspect of the pack and to respect the raw nature of the wolves. The grass was soft beneath my feet and I immediately compared the softness to the grass in the spirit world where I used to meet the moon goddess. Harper had instructed me to not look around an
Epilogue: Zara's POVA blush immediately coated my cheeks as I slowly woke up from my deep slumber. The bed felt too cosy and I couldn't help but snuggle against Harper's body. His amazing body heat and the tingles that danced all over my skin whenever we touched made me let out a deep, sleepy moan. I felt Harper stir beside me and felt his arm settle on my bare hip, eliciting a heady warmth to settle deep in my belly. His thumb gently caressed my hip bone and I moved closer to him, determined to have as much skin contact as possible and leave no space between us. Harper's scent surrounded me, which brought an involuntary sleepy smile to my face. Even with my eyes closed, I could picture Harper's slightly upturned nose as he slept. It was too hard to resist his adorable expressions so most of the time, I didn't even try. My head rested on his shoulder and my face settled in the crook of his neck. Without needing to open my eyes, I leaned forward and planted an open-mouthed kiss on Ha
I thought about it for so many months, because the act of being marked by Harper seemed final. It felt like a full stop and in a way, it was final, an end. I knew the meaning of being marked even before I had decided to go away when I had learned of Natalie's pregnancy. I had asked him to mark me so many months ago and he had refused. It seemed so long ago, Aiden's birthday party when he found out that Samantha was his mate. So much has happened since then, things that have made me value the most precious things in life, let go of grudges, and the importance of relationships. After all, I have been through, I believe I have grown as a person. Not just me either, I know that all of us, Harper, Natalie, Samantha, and Aiden have grown up and matured in a way that most eighteen-year-olds don't. Well, Natalie is nineteen years old and so is Harper, as of today. So, I want to stress the fact that the decision to mate with Harper wasn't a light one even though I know most people wouldn't s
I think what the moon goddess said somehow helped me get over Ethan's death. I was still wrung and grieving about him for weeks, don't get me wrong but thinking about how must be at peace somehow made it easy to bear his loss. If I were to believe the goddess' words, Ethan wasn't happy in his life and was lost because he had no apparent purpose. I like to think that he got the release he so desperately wanted and needed. Even after knowing all this, I still couldn't cope with the fact that I won't be seeing him every day. He had been my source of comfort and strength for so long, he was someone I could lean on. He had begun to understand me in ways I'd never thought possible. And his absence felt left like a big void and I wasn't sure I could fill it. I didn't know if it was possible to fill it. When Harper told me that Ethan wouldn't be getting a funeral like the pack members because he was a rogue, I had been so infuriated. I knew that what Harper was saying was a part of who he w
~ Harper’s POV~"You do realize that to break the bond between us, either one of us will have to complete the mating process and mark our mates," I remarked and watched as Natalie nodded her head in acknowledgment. We had just gotten back after performing the final rites of the pack warriors who had lost their lives from the battle with the rogues. Needless to say, we needed some time to regain our bearings before we mingled with the rest of the world. I had done it before when my father was fighting for his life and I still found it jarring to my being, to perform the final rites of the werewolves who lose their lives. I couldn't imagine how Natalie must be feeling as it was her first time dealing with this ceremony. And hopefully, the last time. "I know," she said and we didn't speak for a few moments. I sincerely hoped that it would get easier with time, performing this ritual. It certainly hurt more when I knew that the pack members were paying for the mistakes my father committe
When I came to my senses, I immediately knew that Harper wasn't in the bed with me. I had lost consciousness when I was engulfed in his body heat, with his arms wrapped around me. The loss of his presence was so pronounced that I didn't want to open my eyes. It felt like he was the only reason I wasn't emotionally breaking down right now. A very big part of me wanted to be near him right now and the fact that he wasn't here with me disappointed me a lot. Even in my dreams, I had expected him to be here with me, helping me get over my loss. I wanted to never open my eyes and I was glad the room was shrouded in darkness. My neck prickled in awareness and I became aware of someone sitting in the room and even though, the threat of the rogues was over, I suddenly felt unsafe. "I know you are awake, Zara." I recognized that voice and the fear immediately abated. I opened my eyes and got up in a seating position. I leaned against the headboard and regarded the figure of the soft figure of
