~ Harper’s POV ~
I knew that I was the one who told Zara that I was going to wait for her. I remembered how close I was to kissing her when I had said that she could take some time away from me, even be with that rogue Ethan if that's what she wanted. If that's what she needed. I wanted to show her that I was in the long haul and that I would do anything for her.
But that doesn't mean that it didn't hurt every time I saw them together. It's like a piercing kind of pain that starts in my chest and then travels down my torso until it becomes a pool of heat in my stomach. And if I'm not capitalizing enough, it hurts like hell.
I hadn't planned to introduce my son to Harper in the way I had. It was a spur-of-the-moment decision. I had been told that Zara was in the hospital, sitting with Samantha in Aiden's room and I couldn't help but walk in that direction, I just couldn't wait to see her. I hadn't expected that Zara would be in the same room as Natalie but again she surprised me with her strength of character. Zara knew that Samantha needed her at that moment and she chose to set aside her feelings and be there for her best friend. I couldn't even express how proud I felt of her. I felt gracious and proud that the moon goddess had paired me with her, with Zara, who could be selfless when need be and had the true makings of the perfect Luna.
I knew Zara always doubted herself if she would ever be able to be a Luna when she was human and didn't even know the werewolf ways but truly, she didn't need to. The customs and rituals one can easily learn as the days pass by, what one can't learn are the traits for leadership. Strength and not just physical strength, but psychological strength. The selflessness of serving others. Taking responsibility and courage to be accountable if you do something wrong.
I knew Zara even if she didn't know it herself, but the simple act of coming forward for Samantha in her time of need, when they were in such unsteady waters, was everything a leader embodied. Zara might have done it without a second thought and that was what made her so damn delectable in the moment. My wolf had howled with pride and I just knew in that moment that the right thing would be to show her how much I loved and needed her, by just being honest with her.
And so, I had asked her to come with me and I had taken her to the hospital room Mason was in. He was in the semi-awake state all babies seemed to be in when we walked in. If Zara was nervous, she didn't show it, which just made me want to turn around and hold her in my arms forever. If I had done that, I would have scared her away so I picked up my son and introduced him to my mate.
The scene was bittersweet in so many ways. I was introducing my son to my mate. It was all wrong and so damn ironic.
I had always thought I would one day have a child with my mate, regardless of the struggles we white wolves face with procreating. When I found out that Zara, a human, was my mate, I cursed and cursed the moon goddess because she couldn't have paired me with a less similar person. I had kept her away from me for so long and even went as far as to reject her, which made me hate myself, which made my wolf hate me. I knew if I decided to be with her, I would break her. Our inability to create a child would put a strain on our relationship, it would break Zara and she would hate me. I didn't want to see that look in her eyes, even when I had just begun to notice her in the school hallways, I knew I could never do anything to hurt her, so I pushed her away.
And that had come back to bite me in the ass. It took me so long to realize that I didn't need to push her away. Maybe, instead of me breaking her, she might join my pieces together. Even if that lesson came a little too late, I knew I would do everything to have her by my side.
During that time, I kept all thoughts of children away and focused on what was the best thing in my life, my mate.
And now here I was standing with my son in my arms, with my mate by my side. As I looked down at Mason, I felt a sense of protectiveness wash over me. At times, I still had difficulty believing that he was mine.
Two of the most important people in my life were in the same room and I felt elated beyond measure. I didn't know what Zara was feeling, if she was as composed as she was projecting but I was so content in the moment that I smiled at her.
When she took my son from my arms, I expected her to stiffen, maybe show some sign of awkwardness. I didn't know if I was overstepping my boundaries, if I was doing something shouldn't. There wasn't exactly a rulebook to follow in these situations. I was just doing what my wolf wanted me to, what my heart wanted me to, and right now, all parts of me wanted to live this moment to the fullest.
I had said Zara was the love of my life and it was true. It wasn't my intent to pressure her into feeling obligated to me, it was just something I wanted to say, something I needed for her to hear. It was the exact introduction I wanted to give my son because even though he was my son, Zara was the love of my life. Without her, I was incomplete. To me, it was that simple and I was willing to give Zara all the time she needed to be sure of me.
When I took in the full image of my beautiful and extraordinary mate holding my son, it was the perfect moment for me, to be stored in my memory for years to come. I couldn't help myself then, I had placed my arms around her and brought her close to me. I hugged her as tightly as I could while she was carrying the baby.
It gave me satisfaction and hope when she didn't shy away or reject my advances. It made my heart beat faster when we stayed like this for several minutes and only parted when Mason was asleep.
I had guided her out of the room and that's when reality had set in. The worst part about being a leader was that you had to give certain news to people that you didn't exactly like. Nevertheless, I had promised myself that I would say true to my word and had told Zara that as Ethan was now a temporary part of the pack, he would have to come to the pack training sessions.
Without thinking twice, I blurted, “Also, I would like you to come to train too." I was speechless for a moment when her eyebrows raised and her face grew blank. I didn't want to offend her in any way, even though it was true that I did want her to train. Training with the wolves would lead her to become independent in her own right and she would learn to hold her own against a wolf. I knew my mate was a strong woman and she was no damsel in distress, but to deal with a werewolf, she would have to train. It had nothing to do with me not being able to protect her, but even I wasn't as egoistic as to believe that she wouldn't need to protect herself at some point.
She had looked at me with a wicked gleam in her eye as if she knew something I didn't, and without missing a beat, she agreed to come to the practice.
I didn't want her to go. I wanted to spend more time with her but I knew that she would need to sleep because it's just what she did. I knew that she would need her energy for the training sessions.
I watched her walk away from me and every step she took seemed to deflate me a bit as corny as those sounds. As soon as she turned the corner, I mind-linked the pack warrior who watched over the training sessions that two extra people would come from now on.
Earlier, I had conducted the pack sessions for the newly adult wolves of the pack but ever since the rogue attack in which Dad was injured, I couldn't make time for it. I had pawned off the duty to an experienced warrior who I knew would never neglect this duty while I drowned in paperwork and other alpha duties.
But now that my beautiful mate was coming to the training session, I just knew that I would somehow make the time.
~ Harper’s POV ~Call it a gut feeling but I knew the exact moment Zara reached the pack house. The awareness began as a slow tingling sensation that spread slowly to my fingertips, which itched to touch her. I was sitting in my office when I sensed her in front of the pack house, which could only mean one thing, the mate bond was getting stronger. I could feel it getting stronger, maybe the silver Zara was wearing wasn't as effective anymore. Before I knew what I was doing, I was bounding down the steps as fast as I could to see her. It didn't matter that I had only seen and talked to her a couple of hours ago, I just wanted to be where she was. I stopped in my tracks when I reached the landing of the pack house and stared at the car Zara was sitting in. With that rogue Ethan. I could see they were looking at each other and it made me uncomfortable, like I was intruding on a private moment and my wolf hated the feeling. They were staring intently into each other's eyes, not talki
~ Harper’s POV ~I didn't look back, I just couldn't. My wolf was going mad and I knew that if I had not forced my wolf to run away, he would have torn apart that filthy rogue, consequences be damned. I closed my eyes, desperately trying to erase the picture of Ethan lying on top of Zara but I couldn't do it. The image was burned in my mind and it was torture like no other. I wanted to run away from all my problems, just for a second, and pretend that I was a normal eighteen-year-old teenage guy whose only problem in life was as inconsequential as choosing which girl to take to prom. I huffed as I realized that prom hadn't even been in the deepest recesses of my mind. I had so many responsibilities that the mundane task of going to the prom had been lost to me. Maybe if I was a normal eighteen-year-old and not this big white alpha, I wouldn't be feeling this overwhelming pain in my chest. This burning pain made me want to curl up on the forest floor and lament. I wondered about dif
"My name is Aaron and who are you?" His eyes took me in from head to toe and I resisted the urge to flinch so as not to show him any weakness. "Shouldn't I be asking that question? After all, I'm the one sitting here, strapped to a seat." I replied sarcastically. "I'll be perfectly happy to answer your question but first I'd like to know why you were in the alpha's room in the first place." My eyes widened at his words. What the hell had I gotten myself into?"How do you know it was the alpha's room?" I blurted the words out before thinking and snapped my jaw shut as soon as I realized what I had done."Ah, so you do know about werewolves." My eyes widened at my mistake and he smirked at me. He had played me and I had unknowingly walked right into his trap. "I had a suspicion that you knew about the existence of werewolves and now I have the proof." I just stared blankly at him, lest I give away any important information but then I realized that instead of giving away information,
"Aaron is my twin brother." She nodded and tilted her head to watch me again. "But you didn't know that, did you?"She tilted her head to look at me and waited for my answer but I didn't need to say anything. I knew that she knew that she had given away some information I hadn't known which may or may not prove to be detrimental to this pack of rogues. "Well, it's not like it matters. You won't be spilling any secrets while being strapped in a chair." She stood up from the ground and light spilled from behind me, which meant that the door of the room had opened. In the sliver of light, I could observe that like her whole countenance, the girls' eyes were fairly light and as light shined on them, they seemed to glow. I watched as she stiffened when her eyes met the person who was standing at the doorway of the room behind my back. The shadow that was being cast into the room signified that it was a man, probably even Aaron who had come around to check up on me and found his sister h
~ Harper’s POV ~I was sitting in the alpha's office, feeling completely lost. I had never felt like this before. This was a horrible feeling, this emptiness in my chest. Sure, I had been on the verge of losing people I loved but nothing had compared to this. I had almost lost my mother and my baby sister during labor, my father in the rogue attack, and my son and friend Natalie in labor, but all of these instances combined didn't make me feel as terrified as I was feeling now. The silence in my office seemed so haunting. Every particle of dust suspended in the air made my eyes water. Every little noise, even the sound of my breathing made me feel as if my ears were bleeding. My heart had taken on an irregular rhythm, beating fast for a few minutes when I imagined all the possible places Zara could be and then my heart calmed down when I forced my thoughts towards tactical leadership and planning to find Zara. When I noticed Zara's bracelet dangling in Ethan's hand, a cord had snapp
~ Harper’s POV ~"How do you know it's going to work?" I asked, uncertain about this new idea even though it somehow made sense to me. "I don't know if it's going to work but I am saying there's no harm in trying it. All you need to do is turn into your wolf. Your wolf will feel the pull of the mate bond physically, which will hopefully lead you to Zara's location." Ethan stated forcefully and I closed my eyes in exasperation. I had hoped that the trackers would have some clue about Zara's whereabouts but when they had turned up with nothing, the situation had become more dire. We didn't even know if she had taken off herself or if she was taken by someone. Did the rogues take her or was it some usual and random human kidnapping? All these questions were eating away at me and the uncertainty of the situation was making both me and my wolf incredibly frustrated. "I suppose there's no harm in trying," I said, my mind trying to run in different directions to solve this situation as so
My feet were going numb. I tried to wiggle my toes to feel something, but I couldn't feel my legs at all. For hours, I had been strapped to this chair and the only time I had been allowed to walk was when I was roughly manhandled and asked to "take a piss", in those exact words. Except for that, I had been forced to remain in the exact position for hours and my body was starting to ache and cramp in places that never ached or even some muscles I never knew existed. I had nothing better to do than think about the parts of my body that were in pain. The room I had been kept in was empty for now and I was thankful for it. As grateful as I was for Addison's company, she was one of the people who were keeping me captive here. I tried to shift under the thick rope binding me, hoping that it would loosen a little and make breathing and reduce the numbing feeling in my body. The door creaked open behind me and I instantly stopped struggling, determined to not show any restlessness in front
~ Harper’s POV ~ The last time I had been shot with an arrow laced with wolfsbane, I had collapsed on the spot and went into a coma for a few days, besides the agonizing pain. This time it was different. I have a few theories, maybe the arrow was laced with less wolfsbane than the earlier one or maybe my wolf had somehow developed an immunity to that particular amount of the poison after one attack. The latter was unlikely but in the case of white alphas, anything seemed possible. There wasn't exactly a guide to how white alphas would react to different poisons in the world. Or maybe it was my wolf fighting against the poison because he was still hopeful about rescuing Zara, even though a part of us knew that she had to have been far away now. We had been lying helplessly on the ground for nearly twenty minutes and the truck was nowhere in sight. I shifted into my human form because of the immense pain in my leg. Shifting would also allow me and my wolf to heal better. I pulled out
Bonus Chapter: Natalie's POVI knew something was wrong when I didn't get my period for two months. I never had a smooth cycle so I wasn't troubled when they didn't happen the first time but their absence in the second consecutive month got me worried. My body had undergone certain changes I knew weren't normal and I was worrying myself to death, thinking about some kind of deadly disease that would kill me in a few months. Even though I knew that my immunity system was way better than a normal human's, I couldn't help but entertain such thoughts. I didn't tell anyone of my concerns as I didn't want anyone to worry because of my baseless concerns. Nonetheless, I booked the first possible appointment with the pack gynaecologist. I had prepared myself for everything, a tumour in my ovary, internal hemorrhaging of my uterus that would result in an immediate hysterectomy, or even breast cancer which would again lead to a complete mammectomy. But as I sat in front of the doctor and she ex
Bonus Chapter: Ethan's POVWhen you grow up as a werewolf, all you ever hear is the word 'mate', because people around you can't stop talking about them. Some elders talk about mates with a dazed but happy look in their eyes and you can easily tell how much they love their mates. When young people talked to mates, you could practically feel their longing and the love they had for their mates. When teenagers talk about mates, you can feel their desperation to find their mates and be one with them. Rejections in my pack were extremely rare and every werewolf lived happily ever after with their fated mates. There were no doubts, no questions asked because your mate could be the exact fit of your soul, your second half, and the one who you are supposed to live as long as you live. Growing up and watching my parents and pack members, this is all I had watched and learned, that a mate was for you to love, hold and protect till the end of your days. When you're brought up like that, the ide
EPILOGUE 3: HARPER'S POV (TEN YEARS LATER)It was three years ago when Mason was first teased by a classmate about the unusual arrangement of his parents. I had always known that as he was growing up, he became especially attuned to the fact that the way his family lived wasn't exactly normal by usual standards. There were so many unusual factors that they were bound to seem different to him and I wasn't exactly prepared for how Mason was coping with how different his family seemed to be from any other family in the pack. As the future alpha, it was essential to be a part of the pack because other people were often intimidated by the power you had and by the power you would have in the future. My father always taught me to be a part of the pack but always remember that you could never essentially be a part of the pack. And this is exactly what I had taught Mason to do; I had asked him to play with all the other wolf kids but always remember that in the future, he will be responsible
Epilogue 2: Zara's POVI could feel everyone's eyes on me, which instantly made me nervous. I hated feeling this way but I wasn't sure I could help it. I hated being the centre of attention and walking down an aisle and standing in front of all the pack members to take part in the Luna ceremony was exactly that, being the centre of attention. Harper had told me that since I was the true luna of the pack, the ceremony would be a little different and I wasn't sure how that would affect me as I hadn't exactly attended Natalie's ceremony. I weakly smiled at all the pack members assembled in the pack grounds and started walking down the aisle towards the raised stage at the front of the pack. I was barefoot to pay homage to the natural aspect of the pack and to respect the raw nature of the wolves. The grass was soft beneath my feet and I immediately compared the softness to the grass in the spirit world where I used to meet the moon goddess. Harper had instructed me to not look around an
Epilogue: Zara's POVA blush immediately coated my cheeks as I slowly woke up from my deep slumber. The bed felt too cosy and I couldn't help but snuggle against Harper's body. His amazing body heat and the tingles that danced all over my skin whenever we touched made me let out a deep, sleepy moan. I felt Harper stir beside me and felt his arm settle on my bare hip, eliciting a heady warmth to settle deep in my belly. His thumb gently caressed my hip bone and I moved closer to him, determined to have as much skin contact as possible and leave no space between us. Harper's scent surrounded me, which brought an involuntary sleepy smile to my face. Even with my eyes closed, I could picture Harper's slightly upturned nose as he slept. It was too hard to resist his adorable expressions so most of the time, I didn't even try. My head rested on his shoulder and my face settled in the crook of his neck. Without needing to open my eyes, I leaned forward and planted an open-mouthed kiss on Ha
I thought about it for so many months, because the act of being marked by Harper seemed final. It felt like a full stop and in a way, it was final, an end. I knew the meaning of being marked even before I had decided to go away when I had learned of Natalie's pregnancy. I had asked him to mark me so many months ago and he had refused. It seemed so long ago, Aiden's birthday party when he found out that Samantha was his mate. So much has happened since then, things that have made me value the most precious things in life, let go of grudges, and the importance of relationships. After all, I have been through, I believe I have grown as a person. Not just me either, I know that all of us, Harper, Natalie, Samantha, and Aiden have grown up and matured in a way that most eighteen-year-olds don't. Well, Natalie is nineteen years old and so is Harper, as of today. So, I want to stress the fact that the decision to mate with Harper wasn't a light one even though I know most people wouldn't s
I think what the moon goddess said somehow helped me get over Ethan's death. I was still wrung and grieving about him for weeks, don't get me wrong but thinking about how must be at peace somehow made it easy to bear his loss. If I were to believe the goddess' words, Ethan wasn't happy in his life and was lost because he had no apparent purpose. I like to think that he got the release he so desperately wanted and needed. Even after knowing all this, I still couldn't cope with the fact that I won't be seeing him every day. He had been my source of comfort and strength for so long, he was someone I could lean on. He had begun to understand me in ways I'd never thought possible. And his absence felt left like a big void and I wasn't sure I could fill it. I didn't know if it was possible to fill it. When Harper told me that Ethan wouldn't be getting a funeral like the pack members because he was a rogue, I had been so infuriated. I knew that what Harper was saying was a part of who he w
~ Harper’s POV~"You do realize that to break the bond between us, either one of us will have to complete the mating process and mark our mates," I remarked and watched as Natalie nodded her head in acknowledgment. We had just gotten back after performing the final rites of the pack warriors who had lost their lives from the battle with the rogues. Needless to say, we needed some time to regain our bearings before we mingled with the rest of the world. I had done it before when my father was fighting for his life and I still found it jarring to my being, to perform the final rites of the werewolves who lose their lives. I couldn't imagine how Natalie must be feeling as it was her first time dealing with this ceremony. And hopefully, the last time. "I know," she said and we didn't speak for a few moments. I sincerely hoped that it would get easier with time, performing this ritual. It certainly hurt more when I knew that the pack members were paying for the mistakes my father committe
When I came to my senses, I immediately knew that Harper wasn't in the bed with me. I had lost consciousness when I was engulfed in his body heat, with his arms wrapped around me. The loss of his presence was so pronounced that I didn't want to open my eyes. It felt like he was the only reason I wasn't emotionally breaking down right now. A very big part of me wanted to be near him right now and the fact that he wasn't here with me disappointed me a lot. Even in my dreams, I had expected him to be here with me, helping me get over my loss. I wanted to never open my eyes and I was glad the room was shrouded in darkness. My neck prickled in awareness and I became aware of someone sitting in the room and even though, the threat of the rogues was over, I suddenly felt unsafe. "I know you are awake, Zara." I recognized that voice and the fear immediately abated. I opened my eyes and got up in a seating position. I leaned against the headboard and regarded the figure of the soft figure of
