My brain wasn't working fast enough to understand what had happened here. My eyes grew wide and kept flitting from one point to another. Honestly, with all the mess around me, it was hard to focus on one point.
I took a few steps inside the room and stretched my hand to turn on the light switch of the room. The room lit up in a bright white light and it became clear that the damage was much serious.
Someone had come into this room and upturned everything here. Probably they were searching for something, some important document that the alpha of the pack would have maybe.
I closed the door behind me and looked at the time it would take to get everything back in order. I sighed and waded my way through the mess towards the bathroom to see if it was as messy as the bedroom.
The shower curtain was on the floor and so were Harper's toiletries. I was glad that I wasn't going to be the one to clean up all this.
Before I could turn around, a hand grabbed my mid-section from behind. I opened my mouth to scream but another hand clamped down on my mouth to stifle any cries.
"Look what we have here!" A deep voice whispered in my ear and my eyes grew wide when I realized that it wasn't a stupid prank because I didn't recognize this man's voice. I struggled under his hold but he was able to manhandle me. "What's a human doing here in the alpha's suite?"
I groaned against his hand and he chuckled deep in my ear, amused at my helplessness. I continued resisting him while sudden flashes of a past incident flashed before my eyes. The time when two men had held me while another was trying to molest me. That time, Ethan had come to my rescue and that day I had decided that I wasn't going to need a prince charming to come save me again. That was exactly why I had started training, to keep lechers like the one holding me far away.
I recalled that Ethan had told me to get out of this very hold and while this stupid werewolf kept on thinking that I was a defenseless and powerless human girl, I would have him in the ground in no time.
The werewolf, who I assumed was a rogue, was still chuckling in my ear. I jammed the heel of my foot on his foot as hard as I could. I knew that being a werewolf, it wouldn't hurt him much but it would surely startle him, giving me enough time to twist his wrist and twist out of his hold.
I smirked as I watched him hold his sprained wrist close to his chest. "Who's powerless now?"
I wasn't going to be a fool and waste precious time by standing there and taunting him. Nesting a werewolf was one thing but battling a fully grown rogue wolf was another. The odds weren't exactly in my favor and I was smart enough to realize that.
I bounded out of the washroom and I knew that the rogue would immediately be on my heels. I skidded just out of the walk-in closet and landed in another pair of arms.
I was hoping to see a familiar face but I immediately recoiled when I came face to face with a man with a nasty sneer on his face. The man who had caught hold of me caught up to us. "Ah, there you are. All caught up, I see."
The man in front of me put his hands firmly on my upper arms and refused to let me budge. Now, there were two rogue wolves I had to fight and I knew that I was completely at their mercy. Just by looking at them, I knew that I couldn't win, because I knew they were deranged and I was nothing but a minor inconvenience to them.
To get the rogue off of me, I landed my knee in his stomach to throw him off balance. He didn't even look surprised, just barely amused. "I think I'm going to keep you, girl. You are far too entertaining." I struggled in his grip and screamed in his face.
He put his meaty hand on my face and stifled my cry for help. "Now, we don't want the whole house to come up here, do we?"
That's exactly what I want!
I bit his hand and, in a reflex, he moved it away from me. I writhed away from him and screamed out loud.
Stars danced across my vision and my scream was cut short as I felt a heavy and hard surface on my head. I immediately collapsed and pain burst in my head. I clenched my eyes shut because the white light in the room hurt my eyes. I could feel the floor dance beneath me, which I barely recognized wasn't good.
I felt an acute sense of pain in the back of my head and I knew that I had a concussion and there was blood too. I could smell the tangy smell of blood in the air around me and felt a trickle of cool and viscous liquid travel down my neck. Tears sprung in my eyes at my helplessness. I could barely breathe at this point, much less move my limbs or try to get up.
The floor felt so cold against my body that I didn't realize that I was shivering. I could hear the two rogues whispering in the room. I barely realized that they were cleaning the mess that they had made so that no one would know that someone had searched this room.
My brain seemed so fuzzy that I couldn't seem to hold onto any thought. Were they going to leave me here to die or were they going to take me with them? I had no idea and neither option sounded appealing to me.
How had I come to this? I had come here hoping to talk to Harper and now I was lying on his bedroom floor in a pile of blood while two rogue wolves scampered around.
How did the rogues even get inside the pack borders? I groaned as another wave of pain shot through my skull. It felt like I was being pounded down by a baseball bat.
Suddenly, I was being lifted into the air and balanced on one of the man's shoulders. So, they decided to take me with them, then. Why though? What could they possibly want from me?
I couldn't open my eyes now, it felt like too much effort. But if they had cleaned the mess then there would be no way that Harper or any other pack member would know that there had been rogues here. There would be no way that anyone would know that I was being abducted by them. So, I did the only thing my fuzzy brain was capable of doing. I slipped the silver bracelet from my wrist, the one I used to dim the effects of the mate bond, and let it land on the floor.
At least someone would recognize that. I hoped.
***
My head pounded and I felt groggy but I knew that we weren't in the pack house anymore. I was in a car because of the way the floor hummed beneath me.
I was barely lucid at the moment. I had no idea how much time I had been in the car and in which direction we had traveled. I didn't even know if there were two rogues in the car or just one. It didn't matter, honestly because in this condition I couldn't even fight against a cat.
I lifted my hand and touched the back of my head. I felt a raised bump and crusted blood in my hair. Ew, Gross! At least I wasn't bleeding anymore which was a good sign. It also meant that I probably wouldn't need stitches, another good sign.
I struggled to open my eyes and thanked them when I noticed that it was dark and it didn't hurt my retinas. I moved my eyes which made my head pound so I immediately closed them. I was in no condition to even sweep the car for something useful or incriminating.
Bike rose in my throat as a result of motion sickness and my head felt like it was struck down by a hammer.
I barely registered when the door opened and when I was carried out of the car. My eyes closed on their own and the next time I opened them I felt someone dabbing the back of my head, with a very strong smell of disinfectant in the air. I tried to move my arms to check how my head was but they felt like jelly and it seemed such a tough work, I let it be. I couldn't keep my eyes open for more than a few seconds because every time I tried to focus my eyes, my head ached and I didn't have the energy to groan or the strength to handle it.
The next time I could feel something or think a fully comprehensive thought, I realized I was sitting. I was sitting on a chair and my arms and feet were tied. I didn't have the energy to wiggle my limbs to set myself free.
Though, finally I could open my eyes without flinching. The room was dark and completely bare except for me and my chair and a mattress.
I heard the sound of the door opening, which meant the exit to this room was behind me. I heard the deep thuds I'd someone's footsteps and waited for the person to come in front of me.
The man was barely 23 years of age and held a blank expression as his eyes took every inch of me. His gaze seemed more inquisitive than leery and I was glad that I didn't shrink away from his intense gaze.
He tilted his head to the side and regarded me thoughtfully. "My name is Aaron and who are you?"
~ Harper’s POV ~ I knew that I was the one who told Zara that I was going to wait for her. I remembered how close I was to kissing her when I had said that she could take some time away from me, even be with that rogue Ethan if that's what she wanted. If that's what she needed. I wanted to show her that I was in the long haul and that I would do anything for her.But that doesn't mean that it didn't hurt every time I saw them together. It's like a piercing kind of pain that starts in my chest and then travels down my torso until it becomes a pool of heat in my stomach. And if I'm not capitalizing enough, it hurts like hell. I hadn't planned to introduce my son to Harper in the way I had. It was a spur-of-the-moment decision. I had been told that Zara was in the hospital, sitting with Samantha in Aiden's room and I couldn't help but walk in that direction, I just couldn't wait to see her. I hadn't expected that Zara would be in the same room as Natalie but again she surprised me with
~ Harper’s POV ~Call it a gut feeling but I knew the exact moment Zara reached the pack house. The awareness began as a slow tingling sensation that spread slowly to my fingertips, which itched to touch her. I was sitting in my office when I sensed her in front of the pack house, which could only mean one thing, the mate bond was getting stronger. I could feel it getting stronger, maybe the silver Zara was wearing wasn't as effective anymore. Before I knew what I was doing, I was bounding down the steps as fast as I could to see her. It didn't matter that I had only seen and talked to her a couple of hours ago, I just wanted to be where she was. I stopped in my tracks when I reached the landing of the pack house and stared at the car Zara was sitting in. With that rogue Ethan. I could see they were looking at each other and it made me uncomfortable, like I was intruding on a private moment and my wolf hated the feeling. They were staring intently into each other's eyes, not talki
~ Harper’s POV ~I didn't look back, I just couldn't. My wolf was going mad and I knew that if I had not forced my wolf to run away, he would have torn apart that filthy rogue, consequences be damned. I closed my eyes, desperately trying to erase the picture of Ethan lying on top of Zara but I couldn't do it. The image was burned in my mind and it was torture like no other. I wanted to run away from all my problems, just for a second, and pretend that I was a normal eighteen-year-old teenage guy whose only problem in life was as inconsequential as choosing which girl to take to prom. I huffed as I realized that prom hadn't even been in the deepest recesses of my mind. I had so many responsibilities that the mundane task of going to the prom had been lost to me. Maybe if I was a normal eighteen-year-old and not this big white alpha, I wouldn't be feeling this overwhelming pain in my chest. This burning pain made me want to curl up on the forest floor and lament. I wondered about dif
"My name is Aaron and who are you?" His eyes took me in from head to toe and I resisted the urge to flinch so as not to show him any weakness. "Shouldn't I be asking that question? After all, I'm the one sitting here, strapped to a seat." I replied sarcastically. "I'll be perfectly happy to answer your question but first I'd like to know why you were in the alpha's room in the first place." My eyes widened at his words. What the hell had I gotten myself into?"How do you know it was the alpha's room?" I blurted the words out before thinking and snapped my jaw shut as soon as I realized what I had done."Ah, so you do know about werewolves." My eyes widened at my mistake and he smirked at me. He had played me and I had unknowingly walked right into his trap. "I had a suspicion that you knew about the existence of werewolves and now I have the proof." I just stared blankly at him, lest I give away any important information but then I realized that instead of giving away information,
"Aaron is my twin brother." She nodded and tilted her head to watch me again. "But you didn't know that, did you?"She tilted her head to look at me and waited for my answer but I didn't need to say anything. I knew that she knew that she had given away some information I hadn't known which may or may not prove to be detrimental to this pack of rogues. "Well, it's not like it matters. You won't be spilling any secrets while being strapped in a chair." She stood up from the ground and light spilled from behind me, which meant that the door of the room had opened. In the sliver of light, I could observe that like her whole countenance, the girls' eyes were fairly light and as light shined on them, they seemed to glow. I watched as she stiffened when her eyes met the person who was standing at the doorway of the room behind my back. The shadow that was being cast into the room signified that it was a man, probably even Aaron who had come around to check up on me and found his sister h
~ Harper’s POV ~I was sitting in the alpha's office, feeling completely lost. I had never felt like this before. This was a horrible feeling, this emptiness in my chest. Sure, I had been on the verge of losing people I loved but nothing had compared to this. I had almost lost my mother and my baby sister during labor, my father in the rogue attack, and my son and friend Natalie in labor, but all of these instances combined didn't make me feel as terrified as I was feeling now. The silence in my office seemed so haunting. Every particle of dust suspended in the air made my eyes water. Every little noise, even the sound of my breathing made me feel as if my ears were bleeding. My heart had taken on an irregular rhythm, beating fast for a few minutes when I imagined all the possible places Zara could be and then my heart calmed down when I forced my thoughts towards tactical leadership and planning to find Zara. When I noticed Zara's bracelet dangling in Ethan's hand, a cord had snapp
~ Harper’s POV ~"How do you know it's going to work?" I asked, uncertain about this new idea even though it somehow made sense to me. "I don't know if it's going to work but I am saying there's no harm in trying it. All you need to do is turn into your wolf. Your wolf will feel the pull of the mate bond physically, which will hopefully lead you to Zara's location." Ethan stated forcefully and I closed my eyes in exasperation. I had hoped that the trackers would have some clue about Zara's whereabouts but when they had turned up with nothing, the situation had become more dire. We didn't even know if she had taken off herself or if she was taken by someone. Did the rogues take her or was it some usual and random human kidnapping? All these questions were eating away at me and the uncertainty of the situation was making both me and my wolf incredibly frustrated. "I suppose there's no harm in trying," I said, my mind trying to run in different directions to solve this situation as so
My feet were going numb. I tried to wiggle my toes to feel something, but I couldn't feel my legs at all. For hours, I had been strapped to this chair and the only time I had been allowed to walk was when I was roughly manhandled and asked to "take a piss", in those exact words. Except for that, I had been forced to remain in the exact position for hours and my body was starting to ache and cramp in places that never ached or even some muscles I never knew existed. I had nothing better to do than think about the parts of my body that were in pain. The room I had been kept in was empty for now and I was thankful for it. As grateful as I was for Addison's company, she was one of the people who were keeping me captive here. I tried to shift under the thick rope binding me, hoping that it would loosen a little and make breathing and reduce the numbing feeling in my body. The door creaked open behind me and I instantly stopped struggling, determined to not show any restlessness in front
Bonus Chapter: Natalie's POVI knew something was wrong when I didn't get my period for two months. I never had a smooth cycle so I wasn't troubled when they didn't happen the first time but their absence in the second consecutive month got me worried. My body had undergone certain changes I knew weren't normal and I was worrying myself to death, thinking about some kind of deadly disease that would kill me in a few months. Even though I knew that my immunity system was way better than a normal human's, I couldn't help but entertain such thoughts. I didn't tell anyone of my concerns as I didn't want anyone to worry because of my baseless concerns. Nonetheless, I booked the first possible appointment with the pack gynaecologist. I had prepared myself for everything, a tumour in my ovary, internal hemorrhaging of my uterus that would result in an immediate hysterectomy, or even breast cancer which would again lead to a complete mammectomy. But as I sat in front of the doctor and she ex
Bonus Chapter: Ethan's POVWhen you grow up as a werewolf, all you ever hear is the word 'mate', because people around you can't stop talking about them. Some elders talk about mates with a dazed but happy look in their eyes and you can easily tell how much they love their mates. When young people talked to mates, you could practically feel their longing and the love they had for their mates. When teenagers talk about mates, you can feel their desperation to find their mates and be one with them. Rejections in my pack were extremely rare and every werewolf lived happily ever after with their fated mates. There were no doubts, no questions asked because your mate could be the exact fit of your soul, your second half, and the one who you are supposed to live as long as you live. Growing up and watching my parents and pack members, this is all I had watched and learned, that a mate was for you to love, hold and protect till the end of your days. When you're brought up like that, the ide
EPILOGUE 3: HARPER'S POV (TEN YEARS LATER)It was three years ago when Mason was first teased by a classmate about the unusual arrangement of his parents. I had always known that as he was growing up, he became especially attuned to the fact that the way his family lived wasn't exactly normal by usual standards. There were so many unusual factors that they were bound to seem different to him and I wasn't exactly prepared for how Mason was coping with how different his family seemed to be from any other family in the pack. As the future alpha, it was essential to be a part of the pack because other people were often intimidated by the power you had and by the power you would have in the future. My father always taught me to be a part of the pack but always remember that you could never essentially be a part of the pack. And this is exactly what I had taught Mason to do; I had asked him to play with all the other wolf kids but always remember that in the future, he will be responsible
Epilogue 2: Zara's POVI could feel everyone's eyes on me, which instantly made me nervous. I hated feeling this way but I wasn't sure I could help it. I hated being the centre of attention and walking down an aisle and standing in front of all the pack members to take part in the Luna ceremony was exactly that, being the centre of attention. Harper had told me that since I was the true luna of the pack, the ceremony would be a little different and I wasn't sure how that would affect me as I hadn't exactly attended Natalie's ceremony. I weakly smiled at all the pack members assembled in the pack grounds and started walking down the aisle towards the raised stage at the front of the pack. I was barefoot to pay homage to the natural aspect of the pack and to respect the raw nature of the wolves. The grass was soft beneath my feet and I immediately compared the softness to the grass in the spirit world where I used to meet the moon goddess. Harper had instructed me to not look around an
Epilogue: Zara's POVA blush immediately coated my cheeks as I slowly woke up from my deep slumber. The bed felt too cosy and I couldn't help but snuggle against Harper's body. His amazing body heat and the tingles that danced all over my skin whenever we touched made me let out a deep, sleepy moan. I felt Harper stir beside me and felt his arm settle on my bare hip, eliciting a heady warmth to settle deep in my belly. His thumb gently caressed my hip bone and I moved closer to him, determined to have as much skin contact as possible and leave no space between us. Harper's scent surrounded me, which brought an involuntary sleepy smile to my face. Even with my eyes closed, I could picture Harper's slightly upturned nose as he slept. It was too hard to resist his adorable expressions so most of the time, I didn't even try. My head rested on his shoulder and my face settled in the crook of his neck. Without needing to open my eyes, I leaned forward and planted an open-mouthed kiss on Ha
I thought about it for so many months, because the act of being marked by Harper seemed final. It felt like a full stop and in a way, it was final, an end. I knew the meaning of being marked even before I had decided to go away when I had learned of Natalie's pregnancy. I had asked him to mark me so many months ago and he had refused. It seemed so long ago, Aiden's birthday party when he found out that Samantha was his mate. So much has happened since then, things that have made me value the most precious things in life, let go of grudges, and the importance of relationships. After all, I have been through, I believe I have grown as a person. Not just me either, I know that all of us, Harper, Natalie, Samantha, and Aiden have grown up and matured in a way that most eighteen-year-olds don't. Well, Natalie is nineteen years old and so is Harper, as of today. So, I want to stress the fact that the decision to mate with Harper wasn't a light one even though I know most people wouldn't s
I think what the moon goddess said somehow helped me get over Ethan's death. I was still wrung and grieving about him for weeks, don't get me wrong but thinking about how must be at peace somehow made it easy to bear his loss. If I were to believe the goddess' words, Ethan wasn't happy in his life and was lost because he had no apparent purpose. I like to think that he got the release he so desperately wanted and needed. Even after knowing all this, I still couldn't cope with the fact that I won't be seeing him every day. He had been my source of comfort and strength for so long, he was someone I could lean on. He had begun to understand me in ways I'd never thought possible. And his absence felt left like a big void and I wasn't sure I could fill it. I didn't know if it was possible to fill it. When Harper told me that Ethan wouldn't be getting a funeral like the pack members because he was a rogue, I had been so infuriated. I knew that what Harper was saying was a part of who he w
~ Harper’s POV~"You do realize that to break the bond between us, either one of us will have to complete the mating process and mark our mates," I remarked and watched as Natalie nodded her head in acknowledgment. We had just gotten back after performing the final rites of the pack warriors who had lost their lives from the battle with the rogues. Needless to say, we needed some time to regain our bearings before we mingled with the rest of the world. I had done it before when my father was fighting for his life and I still found it jarring to my being, to perform the final rites of the werewolves who lose their lives. I couldn't imagine how Natalie must be feeling as it was her first time dealing with this ceremony. And hopefully, the last time. "I know," she said and we didn't speak for a few moments. I sincerely hoped that it would get easier with time, performing this ritual. It certainly hurt more when I knew that the pack members were paying for the mistakes my father committe
When I came to my senses, I immediately knew that Harper wasn't in the bed with me. I had lost consciousness when I was engulfed in his body heat, with his arms wrapped around me. The loss of his presence was so pronounced that I didn't want to open my eyes. It felt like he was the only reason I wasn't emotionally breaking down right now. A very big part of me wanted to be near him right now and the fact that he wasn't here with me disappointed me a lot. Even in my dreams, I had expected him to be here with me, helping me get over my loss. I wanted to never open my eyes and I was glad the room was shrouded in darkness. My neck prickled in awareness and I became aware of someone sitting in the room and even though, the threat of the rogues was over, I suddenly felt unsafe. "I know you are awake, Zara." I recognized that voice and the fear immediately abated. I opened my eyes and got up in a seating position. I leaned against the headboard and regarded the figure of the soft figure of
