I closed the door behind me and turned around to face Ethan. He made my room look small, his overbearing and muscular physique looked out of place in my room.
"I know what you're going to say, Zara." He said and sat down on my bed.
"You do?" I asked and whirled my chair to sit in front of him. He looked calm and totally in control of his thoughts. I didn't know what he was feeling. I didn't know what he was thinking. I wanted to know about both. Desperately.
"I do. I'm just waiting for you to say something." He pointedly said and waited for me to say something. I opened my mouth to tell him what I had decided but no words came out. He rolled his eyes and bent to unlace his boots. He was getting comfortable, great.
I clenched my eyes shut and disposed of every contradictory argument. "It's about, Harper." I sighed, hoping he would magically catch on to what I was trying to say.
He sighed and laughed at me. "Okay, let me make this easy for you. You don't want to hurt my feelings and are trying the best way to say that you and I should hit a pause on whatever we were doing. Am I right?"
I cringed at his choice of words. Whatever we were doing? At least I would have used a better phrase with some tact. "I still feel for him," I whispered, hoping Ethan wouldn't take offense and understand where I was coming from.
"Of course, you do, Zara. He's your mate." He whispered and smiled at me. I felt a lot better after seeing his smile.
And that smile was all the encouragement I needed. "It's just I love him so much and I don't know if it's just the mate bond or not, a huge part of me just wants to jump into his arms every time I see him. Things are just so unfinished between us. Neither of us got any definite closure, just half-assed phone calls and separation. And he has changed so much. I want to sit down with him and have a good conversation and I want him to listen to what I have to say. I want him to assuage my fears and insecurities."
"I understand what you're feeling, Zara. It's natural to feel that way, believe me." He explained and somehow his words made me feel so much better.
"I thought that I had overcome my feelings for Harper. I thought I was done with him. I thought that I was helping the wolves because I cared about them. It's taken me so long to figure out the real reason. I have been listening to the moon goddess so I could help Harper, even if it's as measly as passing messages from the moon goddess." I ranted and put my head in my hands. "I wanted to forget him, I did. I thought I was stronger than this. Harper has hurt me so much but he is showing me that he cares for me and I want to explore that possibility otherwise I won't ever forget himself. If I let go of this thing between me and Harper now, I know I'll regret it forever. I'll keep thinking about what could have been. And I don't want that. I don't want to have regrets. I'd rather be hurt again than be left wondering about what would have happened if I had been emotionally strong to take the tougher path."
It felt so good to let it all out in the open. I had said things I hadn't even admitted to myself and it felt so cathartic. It felt like a weight being lifted off my chest. It felt as if I could breathe now.
"And considering that I still have feelings for Harper, me continuing things with you seems wrong. It's seemed unfair to you, to Harper, and even me." I stared at Ethan, wondering if he was going to storm out of the room any second now but he regarded me with a passive impression.
"So, what do you want me to do? Do you want me to wait? Do you want to end things between us?"
"I can't ask you to wait for me, Ethan. That would be entirely selfish and cruel of me and I have been trying to right the wrongs I have made." I said and watched as Ethan looked at the ground. "And so, I will completely understand if you want to pack your bags and go back home," I whispered the last words, hoping Ethan would drop his stony facade and let me know what was going on inside his head.
"I'm not going anywhere, Zara," Ethan said firmly as if my suggesting otherwise was foolhardy.
"You're not?" I gaped.
"No, I'm not going anywhere. Not because I hold hope of you falling in love with me like a love-sick fool but because I want to be by your side." I opened my mouth to say something but he held up his hand. "The moon goddess gave me the job of being your batair, your protector and that means something to me. You give a purpose to my life, Zara and that purpose is noble. If you'll have me, I want to stay by your side because then at least I'll be worth something for someone."
My eyes stung at his words and I clenched them shut to ward off the tears. "I don't deserve you," I whispered, my voice cracking.
"I know you don't." He laughed and I hit him with my pillow. "After what happened during the training session, I'm sure Harper must be anxious right now. It's not that late, I suggest you at least try to find him."
"You're serious?" I laughed. He was asking me to look for Harper right now. I had called him the whole day. If he had wanted to see me, he would have called me by now. A simple I'm okay would have been fine too.
"I am very serious. He saw me practically on top of you in front of everyone else. It must have thrown his wolf into a frenzy. He would need to throw me away and show me who was in charge. His wolf was so antsy he forced everyone into submission. I bet he wants to see you right now, Zara."
Well, when he put it like that. "But my parents?"
"I'll take care of them. Now, go. It's not that late. If you find him now, you'll probably be back by midnight and not break curfew."
I stood up from the chair and hugged him. I couldn't help it; he has been such a stronghold for me and he was beyond understanding of my feelings when even I couldn't make sense of them. He has supported me from the minute we became friends and I could not have asked for anyone better to stay by my side.
I didn't change my clothes and climbed down the stairs, careful not to alert my parents. I took my keys and got inside my car.
I pulled my phone out of my sweatpants and dialed Harper's number. It rang and rang and went straight to voicemail. I dialed it again, only to be answered by his voicemail. I sighed, this was most irritating. What was I supposed to do now? I suppose I could drive around town, hoping for a glimpse of him or I could just wait at one spot and wait for him there. The latter option sounded less insane during this time of the night.
Going to the hospital was out of the question. The nurses and the staff had been profoundly welcomed to me but I wouldn't want to spend my night in a hospital waiting for him. Moreover, visiting hours were over hours ago and I doubt they would allow me to stay.
I could wait at his old grandparent's cabin but it was deep in the woods and since I had only been there a couple of times, I wasn't confident I could find it.
I could wander around the jungle and call out to him and meanwhile, also invite other wild animals to feast on me. I groaned in the car and huffed in irritation.
I suppose I could go to the pack house and wait for him in his room. I had been to his room several times and he would have to turn up there at some point in time. It was my best bet anyway, so I turned on the ignition and drove towards the pack house.
I sighed as I looked at the building before me. It looked homey yet opulent at the same time. I got out of the car and climbed up the steps to the front gate.
I rang the bell and the door was opened by a woman in her late fifties a few minutes later. She just smiled at me and opened the door for me to get in. "Thank you", she nodded at me and left me to do as I pleased.
With all the drama revolving around me and Harper, all I wanted was to sneak into his room without anyone noticing me. So, I climbed the stairs toward the alpha wing and walked toward his room. I only hoped that his room had not changed since he had become the alpha.
I knocked twice on the door, desperately hoping to find him there. I pressed my ear to the door and heard a scraping noise. So, Harper knew someone was outside his room and he was intentionally ignoring me.
I huffed in irritation and opened the door. I stepped inside to see that it was swept in darkness. I opened the door to allow the lightness of the hall to illuminate a few feet of the room.
The room was a mess. Not in a teenage boy kind of mess but someone has been here and searched every corner of the room mess. I gasped as I took in the sight. Tables were upturned, the bedspread was thrown to the floor, papers and books were on the ground and all the drawers were thrown on the floor.
What the hell happened here?
My brain wasn't working fast enough to understand what had happened here. My eyes grew wide and kept flitting from one point to another. Honestly, with all the mess around me, it was hard to focus on one point. I took a few steps inside the room and stretched my hand to turn on the light switch of the room. The room lit up in a bright white light and it became clear that the damage was much serious.Someone had come into this room and upturned everything here. Probably they were searching for something, some important document that the alpha of the pack would have maybe.I closed the door behind me and looked at the time it would take to get everything back in order. I sighed and waded my way through the mess towards the bathroom to see if it was as messy as the bedroom. The shower curtain was on the floor and so were Harper's toiletries. I was glad that I wasn't going to be the one to clean up all this. Before I could turn around, a hand grabbed my mid-section from behind. I opene
~ Harper’s POV ~ I knew that I was the one who told Zara that I was going to wait for her. I remembered how close I was to kissing her when I had said that she could take some time away from me, even be with that rogue Ethan if that's what she wanted. If that's what she needed. I wanted to show her that I was in the long haul and that I would do anything for her.But that doesn't mean that it didn't hurt every time I saw them together. It's like a piercing kind of pain that starts in my chest and then travels down my torso until it becomes a pool of heat in my stomach. And if I'm not capitalizing enough, it hurts like hell. I hadn't planned to introduce my son to Harper in the way I had. It was a spur-of-the-moment decision. I had been told that Zara was in the hospital, sitting with Samantha in Aiden's room and I couldn't help but walk in that direction, I just couldn't wait to see her. I hadn't expected that Zara would be in the same room as Natalie but again she surprised me with
~ Harper’s POV ~Call it a gut feeling but I knew the exact moment Zara reached the pack house. The awareness began as a slow tingling sensation that spread slowly to my fingertips, which itched to touch her. I was sitting in my office when I sensed her in front of the pack house, which could only mean one thing, the mate bond was getting stronger. I could feel it getting stronger, maybe the silver Zara was wearing wasn't as effective anymore. Before I knew what I was doing, I was bounding down the steps as fast as I could to see her. It didn't matter that I had only seen and talked to her a couple of hours ago, I just wanted to be where she was. I stopped in my tracks when I reached the landing of the pack house and stared at the car Zara was sitting in. With that rogue Ethan. I could see they were looking at each other and it made me uncomfortable, like I was intruding on a private moment and my wolf hated the feeling. They were staring intently into each other's eyes, not talki
~ Harper’s POV ~I didn't look back, I just couldn't. My wolf was going mad and I knew that if I had not forced my wolf to run away, he would have torn apart that filthy rogue, consequences be damned. I closed my eyes, desperately trying to erase the picture of Ethan lying on top of Zara but I couldn't do it. The image was burned in my mind and it was torture like no other. I wanted to run away from all my problems, just for a second, and pretend that I was a normal eighteen-year-old teenage guy whose only problem in life was as inconsequential as choosing which girl to take to prom. I huffed as I realized that prom hadn't even been in the deepest recesses of my mind. I had so many responsibilities that the mundane task of going to the prom had been lost to me. Maybe if I was a normal eighteen-year-old and not this big white alpha, I wouldn't be feeling this overwhelming pain in my chest. This burning pain made me want to curl up on the forest floor and lament. I wondered about dif
"My name is Aaron and who are you?" His eyes took me in from head to toe and I resisted the urge to flinch so as not to show him any weakness. "Shouldn't I be asking that question? After all, I'm the one sitting here, strapped to a seat." I replied sarcastically. "I'll be perfectly happy to answer your question but first I'd like to know why you were in the alpha's room in the first place." My eyes widened at his words. What the hell had I gotten myself into?"How do you know it was the alpha's room?" I blurted the words out before thinking and snapped my jaw shut as soon as I realized what I had done."Ah, so you do know about werewolves." My eyes widened at my mistake and he smirked at me. He had played me and I had unknowingly walked right into his trap. "I had a suspicion that you knew about the existence of werewolves and now I have the proof." I just stared blankly at him, lest I give away any important information but then I realized that instead of giving away information,
"Aaron is my twin brother." She nodded and tilted her head to watch me again. "But you didn't know that, did you?"She tilted her head to look at me and waited for my answer but I didn't need to say anything. I knew that she knew that she had given away some information I hadn't known which may or may not prove to be detrimental to this pack of rogues. "Well, it's not like it matters. You won't be spilling any secrets while being strapped in a chair." She stood up from the ground and light spilled from behind me, which meant that the door of the room had opened. In the sliver of light, I could observe that like her whole countenance, the girls' eyes were fairly light and as light shined on them, they seemed to glow. I watched as she stiffened when her eyes met the person who was standing at the doorway of the room behind my back. The shadow that was being cast into the room signified that it was a man, probably even Aaron who had come around to check up on me and found his sister h
~ Harper’s POV ~I was sitting in the alpha's office, feeling completely lost. I had never felt like this before. This was a horrible feeling, this emptiness in my chest. Sure, I had been on the verge of losing people I loved but nothing had compared to this. I had almost lost my mother and my baby sister during labor, my father in the rogue attack, and my son and friend Natalie in labor, but all of these instances combined didn't make me feel as terrified as I was feeling now. The silence in my office seemed so haunting. Every particle of dust suspended in the air made my eyes water. Every little noise, even the sound of my breathing made me feel as if my ears were bleeding. My heart had taken on an irregular rhythm, beating fast for a few minutes when I imagined all the possible places Zara could be and then my heart calmed down when I forced my thoughts towards tactical leadership and planning to find Zara. When I noticed Zara's bracelet dangling in Ethan's hand, a cord had snapp
~ Harper’s POV ~"How do you know it's going to work?" I asked, uncertain about this new idea even though it somehow made sense to me. "I don't know if it's going to work but I am saying there's no harm in trying it. All you need to do is turn into your wolf. Your wolf will feel the pull of the mate bond physically, which will hopefully lead you to Zara's location." Ethan stated forcefully and I closed my eyes in exasperation. I had hoped that the trackers would have some clue about Zara's whereabouts but when they had turned up with nothing, the situation had become more dire. We didn't even know if she had taken off herself or if she was taken by someone. Did the rogues take her or was it some usual and random human kidnapping? All these questions were eating away at me and the uncertainty of the situation was making both me and my wolf incredibly frustrated. "I suppose there's no harm in trying," I said, my mind trying to run in different directions to solve this situation as so
Bonus Chapter: Natalie's POVI knew something was wrong when I didn't get my period for two months. I never had a smooth cycle so I wasn't troubled when they didn't happen the first time but their absence in the second consecutive month got me worried. My body had undergone certain changes I knew weren't normal and I was worrying myself to death, thinking about some kind of deadly disease that would kill me in a few months. Even though I knew that my immunity system was way better than a normal human's, I couldn't help but entertain such thoughts. I didn't tell anyone of my concerns as I didn't want anyone to worry because of my baseless concerns. Nonetheless, I booked the first possible appointment with the pack gynaecologist. I had prepared myself for everything, a tumour in my ovary, internal hemorrhaging of my uterus that would result in an immediate hysterectomy, or even breast cancer which would again lead to a complete mammectomy. But as I sat in front of the doctor and she ex
Bonus Chapter: Ethan's POVWhen you grow up as a werewolf, all you ever hear is the word 'mate', because people around you can't stop talking about them. Some elders talk about mates with a dazed but happy look in their eyes and you can easily tell how much they love their mates. When young people talked to mates, you could practically feel their longing and the love they had for their mates. When teenagers talk about mates, you can feel their desperation to find their mates and be one with them. Rejections in my pack were extremely rare and every werewolf lived happily ever after with their fated mates. There were no doubts, no questions asked because your mate could be the exact fit of your soul, your second half, and the one who you are supposed to live as long as you live. Growing up and watching my parents and pack members, this is all I had watched and learned, that a mate was for you to love, hold and protect till the end of your days. When you're brought up like that, the ide
EPILOGUE 3: HARPER'S POV (TEN YEARS LATER)It was three years ago when Mason was first teased by a classmate about the unusual arrangement of his parents. I had always known that as he was growing up, he became especially attuned to the fact that the way his family lived wasn't exactly normal by usual standards. There were so many unusual factors that they were bound to seem different to him and I wasn't exactly prepared for how Mason was coping with how different his family seemed to be from any other family in the pack. As the future alpha, it was essential to be a part of the pack because other people were often intimidated by the power you had and by the power you would have in the future. My father always taught me to be a part of the pack but always remember that you could never essentially be a part of the pack. And this is exactly what I had taught Mason to do; I had asked him to play with all the other wolf kids but always remember that in the future, he will be responsible
Epilogue 2: Zara's POVI could feel everyone's eyes on me, which instantly made me nervous. I hated feeling this way but I wasn't sure I could help it. I hated being the centre of attention and walking down an aisle and standing in front of all the pack members to take part in the Luna ceremony was exactly that, being the centre of attention. Harper had told me that since I was the true luna of the pack, the ceremony would be a little different and I wasn't sure how that would affect me as I hadn't exactly attended Natalie's ceremony. I weakly smiled at all the pack members assembled in the pack grounds and started walking down the aisle towards the raised stage at the front of the pack. I was barefoot to pay homage to the natural aspect of the pack and to respect the raw nature of the wolves. The grass was soft beneath my feet and I immediately compared the softness to the grass in the spirit world where I used to meet the moon goddess. Harper had instructed me to not look around an
Epilogue: Zara's POVA blush immediately coated my cheeks as I slowly woke up from my deep slumber. The bed felt too cosy and I couldn't help but snuggle against Harper's body. His amazing body heat and the tingles that danced all over my skin whenever we touched made me let out a deep, sleepy moan. I felt Harper stir beside me and felt his arm settle on my bare hip, eliciting a heady warmth to settle deep in my belly. His thumb gently caressed my hip bone and I moved closer to him, determined to have as much skin contact as possible and leave no space between us. Harper's scent surrounded me, which brought an involuntary sleepy smile to my face. Even with my eyes closed, I could picture Harper's slightly upturned nose as he slept. It was too hard to resist his adorable expressions so most of the time, I didn't even try. My head rested on his shoulder and my face settled in the crook of his neck. Without needing to open my eyes, I leaned forward and planted an open-mouthed kiss on Ha
I thought about it for so many months, because the act of being marked by Harper seemed final. It felt like a full stop and in a way, it was final, an end. I knew the meaning of being marked even before I had decided to go away when I had learned of Natalie's pregnancy. I had asked him to mark me so many months ago and he had refused. It seemed so long ago, Aiden's birthday party when he found out that Samantha was his mate. So much has happened since then, things that have made me value the most precious things in life, let go of grudges, and the importance of relationships. After all, I have been through, I believe I have grown as a person. Not just me either, I know that all of us, Harper, Natalie, Samantha, and Aiden have grown up and matured in a way that most eighteen-year-olds don't. Well, Natalie is nineteen years old and so is Harper, as of today. So, I want to stress the fact that the decision to mate with Harper wasn't a light one even though I know most people wouldn't s
I think what the moon goddess said somehow helped me get over Ethan's death. I was still wrung and grieving about him for weeks, don't get me wrong but thinking about how must be at peace somehow made it easy to bear his loss. If I were to believe the goddess' words, Ethan wasn't happy in his life and was lost because he had no apparent purpose. I like to think that he got the release he so desperately wanted and needed. Even after knowing all this, I still couldn't cope with the fact that I won't be seeing him every day. He had been my source of comfort and strength for so long, he was someone I could lean on. He had begun to understand me in ways I'd never thought possible. And his absence felt left like a big void and I wasn't sure I could fill it. I didn't know if it was possible to fill it. When Harper told me that Ethan wouldn't be getting a funeral like the pack members because he was a rogue, I had been so infuriated. I knew that what Harper was saying was a part of who he w
~ Harper’s POV~"You do realize that to break the bond between us, either one of us will have to complete the mating process and mark our mates," I remarked and watched as Natalie nodded her head in acknowledgment. We had just gotten back after performing the final rites of the pack warriors who had lost their lives from the battle with the rogues. Needless to say, we needed some time to regain our bearings before we mingled with the rest of the world. I had done it before when my father was fighting for his life and I still found it jarring to my being, to perform the final rites of the werewolves who lose their lives. I couldn't imagine how Natalie must be feeling as it was her first time dealing with this ceremony. And hopefully, the last time. "I know," she said and we didn't speak for a few moments. I sincerely hoped that it would get easier with time, performing this ritual. It certainly hurt more when I knew that the pack members were paying for the mistakes my father committe
When I came to my senses, I immediately knew that Harper wasn't in the bed with me. I had lost consciousness when I was engulfed in his body heat, with his arms wrapped around me. The loss of his presence was so pronounced that I didn't want to open my eyes. It felt like he was the only reason I wasn't emotionally breaking down right now. A very big part of me wanted to be near him right now and the fact that he wasn't here with me disappointed me a lot. Even in my dreams, I had expected him to be here with me, helping me get over my loss. I wanted to never open my eyes and I was glad the room was shrouded in darkness. My neck prickled in awareness and I became aware of someone sitting in the room and even though, the threat of the rogues was over, I suddenly felt unsafe. "I know you are awake, Zara." I recognized that voice and the fear immediately abated. I opened my eyes and got up in a seating position. I leaned against the headboard and regarded the figure of the soft figure of
