~ Harper’s POV ~
"How do you know it's going to work?" I asked, uncertain about this new idea even though it somehow made sense to me.
"I don't know if it's going to work but I am saying there's no harm in trying it. All you need to do is turn into your wolf. Your wolf will feel the pull of the mate bond physically, which will hopefully lead you to Zara's location." Ethan stated forcefully and I closed my eyes in exasperation.
I had hoped that the trackers would have some clue about Zara's whereabouts but when they had turned up with nothing, the situation had become more dire. We didn't even know if she had taken off herself or if she was taken by someone. Did the rogues take her or was it some usual and random human kidnapping? All these questions were eating away at me and the uncertainty of the situation was making both me and my wolf incredibly frustrated.
"I suppose there's no harm in trying," I said, my mind trying to run in different directions to solve this situation as soon as possible. "What do you want me to do?"
"I want you to shift into your wolf and let him take over completely. Only then, your wolf will be able to detect the faint pull of the bond in its most raw form."
"So, all I need to do is shift." I stopped my relentless pacing in my office and opened the door. I gestured at him to exit the room and follow me outside the lack house, where I'll be able to change into my wolf form and give all the control to my wolf. Hopefully, my wolf will then take over and lead me straight to wherever Zara was at the moment.
I quickly mind-linked the head warrior to be outside the pack house in three minutes and have sixty pack warriors on standby should the need arise. I wouldn't be able to communicate with Ethan once I turned in my wolf form, so I needed someone to tell Ethan if I sensed some pull in a particular direction. He affirmed that he would be here and we waited for him to arrive.
"Roland," I said when he finally came and bowed before me. I nodded his respect and looked at Ethan and him to let him know I was ready.
"What are we doing, alpha?" Roland asked.
I chuckled without any humor. "Honestly, I'm not entirely sure," I said and triggered the transformation into my wolf form. I felt my bones break and reform, fur sprout on my skin, my digits elongate to form lethal claws and my mouth extend to form a muzzle. My paws rested on the soft ground and I felt my senses heighten considerably. Without thinking twice, I released all control to my wolf, so that we could finally test our theory.
I felt a growl rip through my core when I finally passed over total control to my wolf. My wolf growled low in disappointment when neither of us felt any pull in any direction and we looked at Ethan and growled threateningly for getting our hopes up with this stupid fiasco.
"You're not doing it right!" Ethan crossed his arms and uncrossed them in frustration. "Try giving in to your senses and your primal nature."
I mentally huffed and rolled my eyes at his pathetic attempt to make me "do it right". I felt like a green circus animal, forced to show tricks and do crazy jumps in front of an unsuspecting audience.
I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. I felt a strange warmth in my stomach and felt a faint clenching of my heart. I focused hard on the beating of my heart and each thump of my heart made me want to run in a particular direction. I didn't know if it was the pull of the bond that Ethan was talking about. The next second, I had taken off in a direction, fully aware that my wolf was following his gut. I didn't know if, at the end of this hunt, I would come closer to finding Zara but for now, I was content to listen to the raw intuition of my wolf.
I immediately mind-linked Roland and asked him and Ethan to follow my wolf. I registered that they had quickly accepted my command and were running behind me, both of them eager about the end destination.
My wolf kept running and I recognized that we were heading towards the south border. I waited and let my wolf all the support he needed to listen to the call of the mate bond. He immediately skidded to a stop and sniffed the air around him. Ethan and Roland stopped running too and looked at me, waiting for some indication or command.
We had reached the mountainous terrain around the city. We were in a heavily wooded area with all kinds of plants growing all around us. We had run three miles out of the southern border of the pack and my wolf was still busy sniffing the air. I didn't question him because I knew that interference was the last thing my wolf needed right now. He trotted a few steps forward and sniffed the ground around us. There were no out or claw marks of any animal so I had no idea what he was searching for. Before I could conclude, he turned around and growled low at Roland. Roland's wolf just nodded and his glazed over, which meant that he was mind-linking someone.
I had no idea what was happening. My wolf was communicating with the wolf of my pack warrior and kept me out of the loop.
Alpha, the reinforcements will arrive within fifteen minutes, Roland's voice spoke inside me and my head whipped around to look at him. He just nodded in reply.
My wolf crouched low on the ground and moved stealthily forward. After a few minutes, I heard a few voices coming from ten feet in front of me. My wolf took another few steps and rested low on the ground. I could hear people talking and my heartbeat quickened because it might be the rogue camp and this was exactly where Zara had been kept after being kidnapped.
Being a white alpha was well and good but the white fur coat reduced all possibilities of stealth. I had to rely on my instincts rather than depend on the camouflage of my coat.
My wolf slowed my heartbeat down so that the wolves a few feet in front of me wouldn't hear the erratic heartbeat. Roland's mind linked me that the pack warriors were only a few minutes away and it would take only a nod from me to lead an unplanned and unexpected attack on the rogues.
Without answering him, my wolf inched slowly towards the two wolves casually talking to each other. If these rogue wolves were part of the rogue group who have been attacking us, then they must have been stationed for a lookout. They were doing a very good job of it.
Before I could ascertain if they were the rogues we were looking for, my wolf, who had been previously shielded by a thicket of shrubs pounced on them. The element of surprise worked in our favor, moreover, there was little they could attempt to do in front of a white alpha who was crazily searching for his mate.
I pounced on both the wolves and ripped their throat out without blinking. My fur was instantly streaked with their blood and I could only imagine how terrifying I would look to anyone who would cross my path.
I briefly registered that the pack warriors had arrived while I was disposing of the two rogues. Without giving them any acknowledgment, my wolf crouched low walked a few steps, and hid behind a thick and large tree.
My wolf was totally in control right now and it felt like I was watching my body do things while being paralyzed or being controlled by an evil spirit or something.
My enhanced senses could tell that there were a couple of dilapidated and abandoned buildings. Tents were set up around them and rogues were milling about the temporary encampment. I don't know how but my wolf was very sure that these were the same rogues who had attacked and continuously threatened us.
Before I could confirm or voice my opinion, my wolf was already charging ahead like a rabid animal, ripping anyone who dared cross his path. Watching their alpha charge at the rogues, the pack warriors threw caution to the wind and followed me right into battle.
It was like watching a movie from a screen placed very close to my eyes. I was watching rogue wolves die and pack warriors engage in fierce battle. Wolves were dying left and right and it felt really good to see that we were doing most of the killing.
I caught a black wolf in the corner of my eye, instantly recognizing Ethan's wolf, who was successfully taking on three rogue wolves.
We had taken these rogues by surprise and it was working in our favor. I swiftly deflected a lethal blow by a grown wolf and jammed my teeth into its belly. The wolf whined and fell to its side blood seeping out of its abdomen. He whimpered and I knew that his death was going to be very painful. I put my paw on his neck and broke his neck, killing him instantly.
Some strange sensation was unfurling on my stomach and I closed my eyes for a second, trying to figure out what it was. I was confused about what had happened to me all of a sudden but my wolf was already bounding towards a particular direction, pretty determined about his goal.
My wolf was cleverly staying away from the fight and smoothly running towards its destination. From a distance, I saw a huge man standing taut against a heavily barricaded door. He looked pretty huge, at least 6'5" in stature with bulky arms and legs. He had a huge gash on the left side of his face and a big swirling tattoo on his right bicep. His countenance radiated tension and he looked to be about four to five years older than me.
His eyes suddenly glazed over, which meant that he was mind-linking someone. I didn't know how it was possible; rogues didn't form packs and without a pack, you can't mind-link your fellow wolves. My wolf grew still as his mind contemplated what he was seeing. My wolf took a deep sniff and confirmed that this man was a rogue. How could this rogue mind link?
Suddenly, the barricaded door opened and a very attractive girl wearing a dress walked out. Amidst all the chaos around me, I found my gaze riveted on these two people. The man and the girl conversed frantically for a few seconds. The man seemed to grow angrier the more he conversed with the girl.
He hastily threw open the barricaded door and within a few minutes came back with a girl struggling against him.
My eyes flew wide open and before I knew it, my wolf was bounding towards the three of them. Zara was thrashing around, trying to rid herself of the man's hold. She was bound by a very thick rope and was wearing a blindfold. I smiled in pride as I realized that Zara was giving him a hell of a struggle.
The man was roughly pushing Zara into a truck, while the girl obediently sat down on the passenger side of the vehicle. In a few minutes, I would be upon the man, his throat in my mouth.
Out of nowhere, a huge body crashed against me and I was thrown against a tree which cracked under my weight. Pain shot up my spine at the terrible impact and I slumped down on the ground.
Images of Zara being manhandled raced through my mind and I found the courage to stand up and fight for her. The wolf who had attacked me was nowhere in sight so I quickly looked for any signs of the trio I had observed earlier. My wolf took over again and I ran in a particular direction it quickly became clear what my wolf was after as the truck I had seen earlier came into view.
I could see Zara still struggling and I increased my speed to catch them. My eyes were fixed on Zara and I felt my breath catch as she suddenly stopped struggling and turned around as if she found sense my eyes were on her.
She couldn't see me because she was blindfolded but I realized that it was the bond that had made her super aware of my presence.
Out of nowhere, an arrow whipped through the air and struck me in my hind leg. I whimpered in pain and skidded through the woods as I lost balance. I saw the wooden body of the arrow sticking out of my legs and blood quickly seeped out of it, staining my already red fur.
I turned my eyes on the truck which was quickly getting away. I stood up on shaky legs and ran after the truck again, not with the same speed, but enough to keep it in my sight. Pain shot up through my leg but I was determined to pull through it.
Visions of holding Zara kept flashing through my mind, so I pushed through the pain and kept running after the truck.
My wolf lost its footing when I felt an arrow strike me through my belly. I could feel the wolfsbane seep into my bloodstream. It wasn't as potent as before but it was enough to make my vision hazy and my mind falter. I took a few shaky steps in the direction I had seen the truck and collapsed from the huge assault of poison and pain.
My feet were going numb. I tried to wiggle my toes to feel something, but I couldn't feel my legs at all. For hours, I had been strapped to this chair and the only time I had been allowed to walk was when I was roughly manhandled and asked to "take a piss", in those exact words. Except for that, I had been forced to remain in the exact position for hours and my body was starting to ache and cramp in places that never ached or even some muscles I never knew existed. I had nothing better to do than think about the parts of my body that were in pain. The room I had been kept in was empty for now and I was thankful for it. As grateful as I was for Addison's company, she was one of the people who were keeping me captive here. I tried to shift under the thick rope binding me, hoping that it would loosen a little and make breathing and reduce the numbing feeling in my body. The door creaked open behind me and I instantly stopped struggling, determined to not show any restlessness in front
~ Harper’s POV ~ The last time I had been shot with an arrow laced with wolfsbane, I had collapsed on the spot and went into a coma for a few days, besides the agonizing pain. This time it was different. I have a few theories, maybe the arrow was laced with less wolfsbane than the earlier one or maybe my wolf had somehow developed an immunity to that particular amount of the poison after one attack. The latter was unlikely but in the case of white alphas, anything seemed possible. There wasn't exactly a guide to how white alphas would react to different poisons in the world. Or maybe it was my wolf fighting against the poison because he was still hopeful about rescuing Zara, even though a part of us knew that she had to have been far away now. We had been lying helplessly on the ground for nearly twenty minutes and the truck was nowhere in sight. I shifted into my human form because of the immense pain in my leg. Shifting would also allow me and my wolf to heal better. I pulled out
~ Harper’s POV ~ A smart man learns from his mistakes and considering I have to lead a whole pack of werewolves, I consider a relatively smart person, who learns from his past mistakes. One of those grave mistakes was to underestimate the importance of Aaron in the rogue wolf pack. If the rogues risked their lives to rescue him from the pack jails, then it would be likely that they would do it again. So, I wasn't going to let it happen, even if I had to guard his prison door myself. "So, what do you plan to do now?" I looked up from my office desk to look at Ethan. "I am going to rest for a while so that my wolf can flush the wolfsbane out of my system," I said and watched him take a seat across the desk. "Then I'm going to shift into my wolf and run where the mate bond leads me." "And what about Aaron?" He asked and I stood up from my desk. "I'm going to look over his accommodation. Want to come with me?" I asked and Ethan nodded. We had established a strange dynamic between our
~ Harper’s POV ~ A truce meeting is a meeting between the ranked wolves of the two opposing packs, or in this case, rogues. The meeting is supposed to be held on neutral grounds so that neither of the sides has any outright advantage over the other. The purpose of holding this meeting was to try to resolve the friction between the two sides by conversation and settlement rather than engaging in a battle in which innocents would die and perish. The motive of this meeting could also be to exchange hostages, even though it happened on very rare occasions because mutual agreement in such cases was very hard to achieve. Different sides demanded different things and thus, settlement rarely happened. The law of truce meetings stated that for the duration of the meeting, there would be no violence between the parties. Both parties were honor-bound by the laws of the werewolf community to restrain themselves from attacking each other. These laws have been enforced for so long that there hasn
~ Harper’s POV ~ Natalie, who happens to be my Luna at the moment, had just screamed that she had found his mate. This could have happened at a better time because, by the looks of it, my Luna had just found out that her mate was a part of the rogues who had been targeting our pack for months. These rogues have harmed innocent people and massacred innocent children. With my luck, the very leader of the rogue pack would be Natalie's mate, the one with those huge bulky, and muscular arms. I could imagine her distress. Her mate was now looking at her when she was already mated to an alpha. Moreover, it was no secret that Natalie had also given birth to my son. That bit of information was surely going to cause problems in her future with her mate. I'm sure she knew she would face several complications when she first knew that she had conceived all those months ago. I'm pretty sure she must have been mentally preparing herself for this situation but there is a vast difference between pr
I opened my eyes and faintly registered that I had been drugged. I had expected to be bound to the same chair when I opened my eyes. Even when I was drugged, my subconscious had been extremely curious about the time the rogue leader, Damon had roughly manhandled me and thrust me in a car no matter how much I struggled. I could still somehow hear the noise of fighting, of wolves growling and sniping at each other, and the moans and groans of those in pain. When I opened my eyes, I didn't see an abysmal room and I wasn't tied to a chair, unable to move and unable to speak. Instead, when I opened my eyes, I noticed that I was barefoot and the extremely soft grass tickled my feet. I distinctly remember wearing my shoes when I had been drugged, so why wasn't I wearing my shoes right now? I noticed the huge moon and the silent waterfall in the distance. The backdrop had an ethereal feel and as I neared the edge of the cliff, I realized that I was in the same place where I met the moon godde
I blinked rapidly, still reeling from the dream and the revelations of it. I clenched and unclenched my bound hands to get some feeling in them. I gasped when I felt the tight bindings chafe my wrists. This was the first time I had opened my eyes since I was roughly manhandled and thrust into a truck amid severe chaos, and was drugged which had put me in a lull. I was in a new room and it was so dark I was hardly able to look at the wall before me. The room looked empty and for once, I was glad that I didn't have any company because I had too much on my mind and I wouldn't have been able to entertain anyone in such a state. My stomach growled and the sound echoed in the room and I was glad when a door behind me opened and spilled light into the room. I grew antsy as the person who had entered my room came into my view and was immediately giddy when I saw that it was Addison and she was carrying some food for me. I smiled brightly at her but frowned when she just put the tray on my l
~ Harper’s POV ~All of us stood frozen in place and watched as the cars drove away from us. What the hell just happened? I would have been reeling after this meeting because it had not gone as I had expected. All of this was to free Zara and make her safe, in exchange for Aaron. Now, Aaron was free and I was clutching the hand of a terrified boy who was my responsibility because I was his alpha. The reason why all of us were unable to utter any word was that the rogue had called me his 'brother'. Was this supposed to be metaphorical or was something used to taunt me? I was sure everyone wanted answers to these questions and I turned around to find everyone's eyes fixed on me, watching my every move, waiting for me to do something. There was nothing to be done. I wanted answers and there was only one place I could get them. My wolf had not yet recuperated from the attack of wolfsbane but even he was too restless to care about the side effects of the poison right now. I called on him
Bonus Chapter: Natalie's POVI knew something was wrong when I didn't get my period for two months. I never had a smooth cycle so I wasn't troubled when they didn't happen the first time but their absence in the second consecutive month got me worried. My body had undergone certain changes I knew weren't normal and I was worrying myself to death, thinking about some kind of deadly disease that would kill me in a few months. Even though I knew that my immunity system was way better than a normal human's, I couldn't help but entertain such thoughts. I didn't tell anyone of my concerns as I didn't want anyone to worry because of my baseless concerns. Nonetheless, I booked the first possible appointment with the pack gynaecologist. I had prepared myself for everything, a tumour in my ovary, internal hemorrhaging of my uterus that would result in an immediate hysterectomy, or even breast cancer which would again lead to a complete mammectomy. But as I sat in front of the doctor and she ex
Bonus Chapter: Ethan's POVWhen you grow up as a werewolf, all you ever hear is the word 'mate', because people around you can't stop talking about them. Some elders talk about mates with a dazed but happy look in their eyes and you can easily tell how much they love their mates. When young people talked to mates, you could practically feel their longing and the love they had for their mates. When teenagers talk about mates, you can feel their desperation to find their mates and be one with them. Rejections in my pack were extremely rare and every werewolf lived happily ever after with their fated mates. There were no doubts, no questions asked because your mate could be the exact fit of your soul, your second half, and the one who you are supposed to live as long as you live. Growing up and watching my parents and pack members, this is all I had watched and learned, that a mate was for you to love, hold and protect till the end of your days. When you're brought up like that, the ide
EPILOGUE 3: HARPER'S POV (TEN YEARS LATER)It was three years ago when Mason was first teased by a classmate about the unusual arrangement of his parents. I had always known that as he was growing up, he became especially attuned to the fact that the way his family lived wasn't exactly normal by usual standards. There were so many unusual factors that they were bound to seem different to him and I wasn't exactly prepared for how Mason was coping with how different his family seemed to be from any other family in the pack. As the future alpha, it was essential to be a part of the pack because other people were often intimidated by the power you had and by the power you would have in the future. My father always taught me to be a part of the pack but always remember that you could never essentially be a part of the pack. And this is exactly what I had taught Mason to do; I had asked him to play with all the other wolf kids but always remember that in the future, he will be responsible
Epilogue 2: Zara's POVI could feel everyone's eyes on me, which instantly made me nervous. I hated feeling this way but I wasn't sure I could help it. I hated being the centre of attention and walking down an aisle and standing in front of all the pack members to take part in the Luna ceremony was exactly that, being the centre of attention. Harper had told me that since I was the true luna of the pack, the ceremony would be a little different and I wasn't sure how that would affect me as I hadn't exactly attended Natalie's ceremony. I weakly smiled at all the pack members assembled in the pack grounds and started walking down the aisle towards the raised stage at the front of the pack. I was barefoot to pay homage to the natural aspect of the pack and to respect the raw nature of the wolves. The grass was soft beneath my feet and I immediately compared the softness to the grass in the spirit world where I used to meet the moon goddess. Harper had instructed me to not look around an
Epilogue: Zara's POVA blush immediately coated my cheeks as I slowly woke up from my deep slumber. The bed felt too cosy and I couldn't help but snuggle against Harper's body. His amazing body heat and the tingles that danced all over my skin whenever we touched made me let out a deep, sleepy moan. I felt Harper stir beside me and felt his arm settle on my bare hip, eliciting a heady warmth to settle deep in my belly. His thumb gently caressed my hip bone and I moved closer to him, determined to have as much skin contact as possible and leave no space between us. Harper's scent surrounded me, which brought an involuntary sleepy smile to my face. Even with my eyes closed, I could picture Harper's slightly upturned nose as he slept. It was too hard to resist his adorable expressions so most of the time, I didn't even try. My head rested on his shoulder and my face settled in the crook of his neck. Without needing to open my eyes, I leaned forward and planted an open-mouthed kiss on Ha
I thought about it for so many months, because the act of being marked by Harper seemed final. It felt like a full stop and in a way, it was final, an end. I knew the meaning of being marked even before I had decided to go away when I had learned of Natalie's pregnancy. I had asked him to mark me so many months ago and he had refused. It seemed so long ago, Aiden's birthday party when he found out that Samantha was his mate. So much has happened since then, things that have made me value the most precious things in life, let go of grudges, and the importance of relationships. After all, I have been through, I believe I have grown as a person. Not just me either, I know that all of us, Harper, Natalie, Samantha, and Aiden have grown up and matured in a way that most eighteen-year-olds don't. Well, Natalie is nineteen years old and so is Harper, as of today. So, I want to stress the fact that the decision to mate with Harper wasn't a light one even though I know most people wouldn't s
I think what the moon goddess said somehow helped me get over Ethan's death. I was still wrung and grieving about him for weeks, don't get me wrong but thinking about how must be at peace somehow made it easy to bear his loss. If I were to believe the goddess' words, Ethan wasn't happy in his life and was lost because he had no apparent purpose. I like to think that he got the release he so desperately wanted and needed. Even after knowing all this, I still couldn't cope with the fact that I won't be seeing him every day. He had been my source of comfort and strength for so long, he was someone I could lean on. He had begun to understand me in ways I'd never thought possible. And his absence felt left like a big void and I wasn't sure I could fill it. I didn't know if it was possible to fill it. When Harper told me that Ethan wouldn't be getting a funeral like the pack members because he was a rogue, I had been so infuriated. I knew that what Harper was saying was a part of who he w
~ Harper’s POV~"You do realize that to break the bond between us, either one of us will have to complete the mating process and mark our mates," I remarked and watched as Natalie nodded her head in acknowledgment. We had just gotten back after performing the final rites of the pack warriors who had lost their lives from the battle with the rogues. Needless to say, we needed some time to regain our bearings before we mingled with the rest of the world. I had done it before when my father was fighting for his life and I still found it jarring to my being, to perform the final rites of the werewolves who lose their lives. I couldn't imagine how Natalie must be feeling as it was her first time dealing with this ceremony. And hopefully, the last time. "I know," she said and we didn't speak for a few moments. I sincerely hoped that it would get easier with time, performing this ritual. It certainly hurt more when I knew that the pack members were paying for the mistakes my father committe
When I came to my senses, I immediately knew that Harper wasn't in the bed with me. I had lost consciousness when I was engulfed in his body heat, with his arms wrapped around me. The loss of his presence was so pronounced that I didn't want to open my eyes. It felt like he was the only reason I wasn't emotionally breaking down right now. A very big part of me wanted to be near him right now and the fact that he wasn't here with me disappointed me a lot. Even in my dreams, I had expected him to be here with me, helping me get over my loss. I wanted to never open my eyes and I was glad the room was shrouded in darkness. My neck prickled in awareness and I became aware of someone sitting in the room and even though, the threat of the rogues was over, I suddenly felt unsafe. "I know you are awake, Zara." I recognized that voice and the fear immediately abated. I opened my eyes and got up in a seating position. I leaned against the headboard and regarded the figure of the soft figure of
