~ Harper’s POV ~

The last time I had been shot with an arrow laced with wolfsbane, I had collapsed on the spot and went into a coma for a few days, besides the agonizing pain. This time it was different. I have a few theories, maybe the arrow was laced with less wolfsbane than the earlier one or maybe my wolf had somehow developed an immunity to that particular amount of the poison after one attack. The latter was unlikely but in the case of white alphas, anything seemed possible. There wasn't exactly a guide to how white alphas would react to different poisons in the world.

Or maybe it was my wolf fighting against the poison because he was still hopeful about rescuing Zara, even though a part of us knew that she had to have been far away now. We had been lying helplessly on the ground for nearly twenty minutes and the truck was nowhere in sight.

I shifted into my human form because of the immense pain in my leg. Shifting would also allow me and my wolf to heal better. I pulled out the arrow from my leg and barely winced.

I stood up naked, no idea how to clothe myself. In and around the pack perimeter, clothes were carefully stashed in a lot of places so that pack wolves could dress themselves. We were quite a distance away from the pack boundaries and I knew that our clothing bounties didn't extend to this point. Nonetheless, being naked in front of the pack warriors wasn't something out of the ordinary. Werewolves in a pack had to sometimes shift back into their human form, so nudity to a point was normal.

My wolf was still healing from the wolfsbane from the arrow so I did not want to shift right then. I had followed the truck Zara was in for a good distance, which meant that I had drifted away from the main battle arena. I closed my eyes and focused my senses to sense where my pack warriors were and I ran in that direction, hoping the fight to be over already.

I was pleased and proud to see that my pack warriors had defeated the rogue wolves and were taking all of them prisoners. These rogue wolves would be questioned and tortured for information that could help us get back Zara.

My stomach plummeted as my thoughts wandered towards her. Guilt and rage were taking over my body. How could I have let her be taken again? This time, right in front of my very own eyes. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. I knew what I had to do and I would be happy to do it for Zara anytime.

The pack warriors noticed me and bowed to me. One of them handed me a pair of basketball shorts and I thanked him. I put on the shorts and immediately asked for the casualty count of the pack and the rogues.

"We have no casualties, alpha." Roland puffed up with pride and an amazing feeling of giddiness swelled in my chest, despite the horrible circumstances right now. "Three of our warriors are severely injured though and were soon sent towards pack boundaries."

I nodded. "What about the rogues?" It seemed so unrealistic that we had no casualties but this is exactly what the pack deserved after being threatened time and time again. I was so glad no one would have to bury their dead now.

"The dead count of the rogues seems to be at 25 and we are still recovering and counting dead bodies." Roland continued and stopped abruptly when he saw another warrior running towards us.

"Alpha," he panted before bowing to me. I nodded and waited for him to catch his breath. "Alpha, you need to see this. We captured a rogue we thought you'd be very interested to see."

"Who is it?" I asked him, curious about this certain rogue the warriors seemed to have captured. I followed him to a spot where five warriors stood encircling a man, who was sitting on his knees, his hands and legs bound as tightly as possible. As I neared the sight, my nostrils flared in white, hot fury as I recalled who this rogue was.

The rogue my warriors had managed to capture was none other than Aaron. I had deduced as soon as he had escaped from the pack's prison that he wasn't a mere soldier in the ranks of the rogues attacking us. Otherwise, the rogues would not have risked their lives to enter the pack boundaries and rescue him. He had to be someone important and if he was as high in the command chain as I knew he was, he was going to be pummeled to death by my own hands.

He hadn't escaped the battle without scars or wounds. His shoulder seemed to be disclosed and an ugly purple bruise was forming on his forehead, a clear sign that someone had landed a heavy blow on his head. That someone was going to get a very big raise from me.

Aaron was slumped on the ground; he was facing difficulties in supporting his body with a dislocated shoulder and his head injury wasn't helping him. Unperturbed by his injuries, I strode towards him. His eyes met mine and he immediately squared his shoulders and put on an emotionless mask. I admired him for it.

I landed a punch squarely on his face and heard the satisfying crunch of a nose being broken. Blood spurted out of Aaron's nose and a primal satisfaction engulfed me.

I was breathing hard in rage, taking deep breaths in and enjoying the sight of Aaron unconscious on the forest floor.

"Alpha, we found this on him when we captured him." Another pack warrior came forward with a bow and a pack of arrows and my eyes automatically flew to his face.

I could sense the wolfsbane on the arrowheads and vivid images flashed through my mind in a flash. The time I was determined to follow my gut and search for Zara but was struck down by an arrow that had almost killed me. My father, who had lost his wolf after being attacked by the same arrow, had to give up his alpha position because he could no longer lead the wolves and I had to step up with a Luna who wasn't my mate. I was struck down by this very same arrow nearly forty minutes ago, which had stopped me from rescuing my mate. On top of everything, he was also responsible for the battle Aiden was fighting while lying in a hospital bed.

My wolf rose from deep inside me, wanting desperately to claw out his throat and silence this rogue forever. "Take him with the others. Keep a special eye on him." I said instead and started running towards the pack borders because if I had stayed for one more second, I would have acted upon my deepest urges and murdered him.

I crossed the border in a few minutes and just then I heard my mother's mind link me, Harper, come to the hospital at once.

My feet stumbled at once and I nearly lost my footing which would have made me land face-first on the grassy floor. The moment I had shifted back into my human form I had lost the ability to mind link pack members far away from me. If I had been in my wolf form, I wouldn't have to cross the pack borders to mind link the pack members while I was out of the pack borders.

Dread settled deep in my gut and an inkling of fear slithered up my spine. What had happened that my mother had mind-linked me to come urgently to the hospital? Horrible scenarios flashed through my mind and I clenched my eyes shut to stop them. On top of not being able to rescue Zara, I wasn't going to lose someone I loved right now.

I blocked my thoughts and ran mechanically towards the hospital. One step in front of the other. I didn't need to think right now, so I wasn't going to. I reached the hospital building quicker than I had liked to and I stared at the building before making my way inside.

I spotted my mother straightaway and I instantly relaxed when I saw that she wasn't wound up. She didn't seem tense which meant that for once, something good might have happened. I made my way towards her and she smiled at me when she saw me. She hugged me and planted a kiss on my forehead.

"What happened, mom? I thought something happened."

"Something did happen. Aiden is awake." She smiled and my whole body relaxed after hearing that. "He asked to see you. Go to him."

I nodded numbly, at a loss of words. I turned around and walked towards the elevator. Seeing Aiden lying helpless in a hospital had been gut-wrenching. He wasn't just my beta; he was my best friend. He was like a brother to me. I'm sure I am probably the second person to be happy about him waking up the first being Samantha, his mate of course.

I briskly walked towards Aiden's room and was glad to find Aiden and Samantha alone in the room. I knew it was futile and selfish to ask Samantha to leave Aiden at the moment. I knew how it felt being scared for your mate.   She was sitting by his bed, their hands grasped in each other. My heart ached at the sight of my two friends like this. It reminded me of my mate who must have been scared out of her mind and I had failed to rescue her.

Aiden's gaze rested on me a moment later and his face broke into a tired smirk. He was looking healthier. He had good color on his face and I knew he would recover soon because his wolf had already healed.

I gave him a teasing smile of my own and went towards the other side of the bed. "Alpha." Aiden teased me and I groaned out loud.

"You can't call me that." I pleaded and Samantha burst out laughing, which made Aiden laugh out loud. Soon, all three of us were laughing like we had no problem in the world.

Aiden sobered up and turned serious pretty quickly. "What happened while I was gone?"

My lips flattened into a thin line and I told him everything that had happened while he was out. I also told them about Zara being taken. I hadn't told Samantha about Zara's kidnapping because she was already worried to death about Aiden but now, I told them everything, including the attack on the rogues today.

"So, what do you plan to do now?" Aiden asked.

"Something big."

~ Harper’s POV ~ A smart man learns from his mistakes and considering I have to lead a whole pack of werewolves, I consider a relatively smart person, who learns from his past mistakes. One of those grave mistakes was to underestimate the importance of Aaron in the rogue wolf pack. If the rogues risked their lives to rescue him from the pack jails, then it would be likely that they would do it again. So, I wasn't going to let it happen, even if I had to guard his prison door myself. "So, what do you plan to do now?" I looked up from my office desk to look at Ethan. "I am going to rest for a while so that my wolf can flush the wolfsbane out of my system," I said and watched him take a seat across the desk. "Then I'm going to shift into my wolf and run where the mate bond leads me." "And what about Aaron?" He asked and I stood up from my desk. "I'm going to look over his accommodation. Want to come with me?" I asked and Ethan nodded. We had established a strange dynamic between our

~ Harper’s POV ~ A truce meeting is a meeting between the ranked wolves of the two opposing packs, or in this case, rogues. The meeting is supposed to be held on neutral grounds so that neither of the sides has any outright advantage over the other. The purpose of holding this meeting was to try to resolve the friction between the two sides by conversation and settlement rather than engaging in a battle in which innocents would die and perish. The motive of this meeting could also be to exchange hostages, even though it happened on very rare occasions because mutual agreement in such cases was very hard to achieve. Different sides demanded different things and thus, settlement rarely happened. The law of truce meetings stated that for the duration of the meeting, there would be no violence between the parties. Both parties were honor-bound by the laws of the werewolf community to restrain themselves from attacking each other. These laws have been enforced for so long that there hasn

~ Harper’s POV ~ Natalie, who happens to be my Luna at the moment, had just screamed that she had found his mate. This could have happened at a better time because, by the looks of it, my Luna had just found out that her mate was a part of the rogues who had been targeting our pack for months. These rogues have harmed innocent people and massacred innocent children. With my luck, the very leader of the rogue pack would be Natalie's mate, the one with those huge bulky, and muscular arms. I could imagine her distress. Her mate was now looking at her when she was already mated to an alpha. Moreover, it was no secret that Natalie had also given birth to my son. That bit of information was surely going to cause problems in her future with her mate. I'm sure she knew she would face several complications when she first knew that she had conceived all those months ago. I'm pretty sure she must have been mentally preparing herself for this situation but there is a vast difference between pr

I opened my eyes and faintly registered that I had been drugged. I had expected to be bound to the same chair when I opened my eyes. Even when I was drugged, my subconscious had been extremely curious about the time the rogue leader, Damon had roughly manhandled me and thrust me in a car no matter how much I struggled. I could still somehow hear the noise of fighting, of wolves growling and sniping at each other, and the moans and groans of those in pain. When I opened my eyes, I didn't see an abysmal room and I wasn't tied to a chair, unable to move and unable to speak. Instead, when I opened my eyes, I noticed that I was barefoot and the extremely soft grass tickled my feet. I distinctly remember wearing my shoes when I had been drugged, so why wasn't I wearing my shoes right now? I noticed the huge moon and the silent waterfall in the distance. The backdrop had an ethereal feel and as I neared the edge of the cliff, I realized that I was in the same place where I met the moon godde

I blinked rapidly, still reeling from the dream and the revelations of it. I clenched and unclenched my bound hands to get some feeling in them. I gasped when I felt the tight bindings chafe my wrists. This was the first time I had opened my eyes since I was roughly manhandled and thrust into a truck amid severe chaos, and was drugged which had put me in a lull. I was in a new room and it was so dark I was hardly able to look at the wall before me. The room looked empty and for once, I was glad that I didn't have any company because I had too much on my mind and I wouldn't have been able to entertain anyone in such a state. My stomach growled and the sound echoed in the room and I was glad when a door behind me opened and spilled light into the room. I grew antsy as the person who had entered my room came into my view and was immediately giddy when I saw that it was Addison and she was carrying some food for me. I smiled brightly at her but frowned when she just put the tray on my l

~ Harper’s POV ~All of us stood frozen in place and watched as the cars drove away from us. What the hell just happened? I would have been reeling after this meeting because it had not gone as I had expected. All of this was to free Zara and make her safe, in exchange for Aaron. Now, Aaron was free and I was clutching the hand of a terrified boy who was my responsibility because I was his alpha. The reason why all of us were unable to utter any word was that the rogue had called me his 'brother'. Was this supposed to be metaphorical or was something used to taunt me? I was sure everyone wanted answers to these questions and I turned around to find everyone's eyes fixed on me, watching my every move, waiting for me to do something. There was nothing to be done. I wanted answers and there was only one place I could get them. My wolf had not yet recuperated from the attack of wolfsbane but even he was too restless to care about the side effects of the poison right now. I called on him

~ Harper’s POV ~My ears were ringing and my head was pounding with the revelations made by my father. I could see from my mother's stony face that she had had no idea that my father had had another family out there somewhere. He had hidden this fact from us for so long as if it were inconsequential and wouldn't matter to us. Moreover, he had discarded this small family because he didn't want to risk his life with his mate, something which would happen anyway. I had no idea what my mom would do now but I would support her without any second thoughts because doing something other than that was out of the question. Zara had been with Ethan in front of my eyes and it burned my very soul to see her with him. It took every ounce of self-control I had to reel my wolf and not let him tear Ethan into pieces. The thought of Zara having babies with someone else was imaginable for me. The ironic hypocrisy of the fact that I had a baby with Natalie, who was going to be the next alpha wasn't lost

I had no idea what to say. It all seemed unreal. How had Addison out of all people helped me get out of the clutches of the rogues? Of course, I had known that I would soon get away from the rogues and come back home safely, but I had imagined Harper and Ethan rescuing me. Why did she help me in the first place?I turned to look at Addison to know the answer to the very question when the doors of the pack house opened and I looked at Natalie and Samantha standing on the threshold, their eyes slowly taking me in, making sure that I was unharmed and safe. Then their eyes landed on Addison beside me and I noticed the slight stiffening of Samantha's shoulders. Aaron, who happened to be Addison's brother was the reason why Aiden had been fighting for his life, and best to my knowledge, he was still in the hospital regaining his strength. It must have gutted him to stay away from the battle between the pack warriors and the rogues. Natalie had adopted a blank mask over her face and I knew

Even though I knew that my immunity system was way better than a normal human's, I couldn't help but entertain such thoughts. I didn't tell anyone of my concerns as I didn't want anyone to worry because of my baseless concerns. Nonetheless, I booked the first possible appointment with the pack gynaecologist. I had prepared myself for everything, a tumour in my ovary, internal hemorrhaging of my uterus that would result in an immediate hysterectomy, or even breast cancer which would again lead to a complete mammectomy. But as I sat in front of the doctor and she ex

Bonus Chapter: Ethan's POVWhen you grow up as a werewolf, all you ever hear is the word 'mate', because people around you can't stop talking about them. Some elders talk about mates with a dazed but happy look in their eyes and you can easily tell how much they love their mates. When young people talked to mates, you could practically feel their longing and the love they had for their mates. When teenagers talk about mates, you can feel their desperation to find their mates and be one with them. Rejections in my pack were extremely rare and every werewolf lived happily ever after with their fated mates. There were no doubts, no questions asked because your mate could be the exact fit of your soul, your second half, and the one who you are supposed to live as long as you live. Growing up and watching my parents and pack members, this is all I had watched and learned, that a mate was for you to love, hold and protect till the end of your days. When you're brought up like that, the ide

I had always known that as he was growing up, he became especially attuned to the fact that the way his family lived wasn't exactly normal by usual standards. There were so many unusual factors that they were bound to seem different to him and I wasn't exactly prepared for how Mason was coping with how different his family seemed to be from any other family in the pack. As the future alpha, it was essential to be a part of the pack because other people were often intimidated by the power you had and by the power you would have in the future. My father always taught me to be a part of the pack but always remember that you could never essentially be a part of the pack. And this is exactly what I had taught Mason to do; I had asked him to play with all the other wolf kids but always remember that in the future, he will be responsible

I hated being the centre of attention and walking down an aisle and standing in front of all the pack members to take part in the Luna ceremony was exactly that, being the centre of attention. Harper had told me that since I was the true luna of the pack, the ceremony would be a little different and I wasn't sure how that would affect me as I hadn't exactly attended Natalie's ceremony. I weakly smiled at all the pack members assembled in the pack grounds and started walking down the aisle towards the raised stage at the front of the pack. I was barefoot to pay homage to the natural aspect of the pack and to respect the raw nature of the wolves. The grass was soft beneath my feet and I immediately compared the softness to the grass in the spirit world where I used to meet the moon goddess. Harper had instructed me to not look around an

Epilogue: Zara's POVA blush immediately coated my cheeks as I slowly woke up from my deep slumber. The bed felt too cosy and I couldn't help but snuggle against Harper's body. His amazing body heat and the tingles that danced all over my skin whenever we touched made me let out a deep, sleepy moan. I felt Harper stir beside me and felt his arm settle on my bare hip, eliciting a heady warmth to settle deep in my belly. His thumb gently caressed my hip bone and I moved closer to him, determined to have as much skin contact as possible and leave no space between us. Harper's scent surrounded me, which brought an involuntary sleepy smile to my face. Even with my eyes closed, I could picture Harper's slightly upturned nose as he slept. It was too hard to resist his adorable expressions so most of the time, I didn't even try. My head rested on his shoulder and my face settled in the crook of his neck. Without needing to open my eyes, I leaned forward and planted an open-mouthed kiss on Ha

I thought about it for so many months, because the act of being marked by Harper seemed final. It felt like a full stop and in a way, it was final, an end. I knew the meaning of being marked even before I had decided to go away when I had learned of Natalie's pregnancy. I had asked him to mark me so many months ago and he had refused. It seemed so long ago, Aiden's birthday party when he found out that Samantha was his mate. So much has happened since then, things that have made me value the most precious things in life, let go of grudges, and the importance of relationships. After all, I have been through, I believe I have grown as a person. Not just me either, I know that all of us, Harper, Natalie, Samantha, and Aiden have grown up and matured in a way that most eighteen-year-olds don't. ~ Harper’s POV~"You do realize that to break the bond between us, either one of us will have to complete the mating process and mark our mates," I remarked and watched as Natalie nodded her head in acknowledgment. We had just gotten back after performing the final rites of the pack warriors who had lost their lives from the battle with the rogues. Needless to say, we needed some time to regain our bearings before we mingled with the rest of the world. I had done it before when my father was fighting for his life and I still found it jarring to my being, to perform the final rites of the werewolves who lose their lives. I couldn't imagine how Natalie must be feeling as it was her first time dealing with this ceremony. And hopefully, the last time. "I know," she said and we didn't speak for a few moments.
