~ Harper’s POV ~

A smart man learns from his mistakes and considering I have to lead a whole pack of werewolves, I consider a relatively smart person, who learns from his past mistakes. One of those grave mistakes was to underestimate the importance of Aaron in the rogue wolf pack. If the rogues risked their lives to rescue him from the pack jails, then it would be likely that they would do it again. So, I wasn't going to let it happen, even if I had to guard his prison door myself.

"So, what do you plan to do now?" I looked up from my office desk to look at Ethan.

"I am going to rest for a while so that my wolf can flush the wolfsbane out of my system," I said and watched him take a seat across the desk. "Then I'm going to shift into my wolf and run where the mate bond leads me."

"And what about Aaron?" He asked and I stood up from my desk.

"I'm going to look over his accommodation. Want to come with me?" I asked and Ethan nodded. We had established a strange dynamic between ourselves, but as long as it helped to get Zara back, I didn't care.

My wolf was trying harder than ever to quickly metabolize the poison. He was growing more antsy as time passed because he just wanted to hold his mate in his arms. Well, at this point seeing her safe was our priority at the moment.

I walked out of the office and Ethan followed me. "I wanted to thank you, Ethan. You have been a great help even if your goal isn't to help the pack but to find Zara, me and my pack appreciate your help a lot." I remarked, finding it extremely funny that I had been plummeting this guy a day ago.

"I'm glad my hunch worked out. I didn't expect that shifting in your wolf form and following the pull of the mate bond would work but I'm glad it did." We walked in silence for a few seconds and walked out of the pack house. "You were the only one to look at Zara. Did she look okay?"

Images of Zara being pulled out from inside the building flashed through my mind. She looked pretty unharmed; I didn't smell any blood or see any bruises on her. And wig the way she was struggling against the hold of that huge rogue was enough to subdue my worries. I knew Zara had as much spirit as a werewolf and she wouldn't go down without a fight. If she was struggling, it meant she was in her right mind. "She will be okay as soon as I bring her back," I added instead, wanting to keep that snippet of her struggle with me.

Ethan nodded and didn't say anything for a while. When he noticed that I wasn't walking in the direction of the pack prison, he stopped. "Where are we going?"

"We have kept Aaron in the safe house of the pack. That way, he will be surrounded by the pack houses, be deep in the pack which will make it difficult for anyone to penetrate the borders that deep." I pointed in the direction of the safe house and Ethan started to follow me again. The fact that the rogues had infiltrated the pack prison and rescued a prisoner from there was insulting enough. It irked me that the surveillance my pack was providing was lacking. After being appointed alpha, I didn't alter any plans regarding the status and guards of the jail cell. After everything is over, I'll review the plans and make some necessary arrangements to solidify the defenses of the pack.

We reached the pack safe house and I entered the code which all the pack members were privy to, so that they could use it in the case of emergencies. The vault-like door of the safe house opened with a whoosh and we entered it.

The safe house was made like a long theater and looked more like a nuclear bunker. Necessary provisions were stacked on one end of the while a lovely sight was visible on the other.

I and Ethan moved inside the bunker to find Aaron being strapped to a concrete bed, specially designed to hold werewolves. His legs, hands, torso, and head were bound by strong leather straps drenched in wolfsbane and I could see that his struggles had chafed his skin. The more he would struggle against the binds, the more wolfsbane would seep into his system and make his wolf weak.

The sight pleased me quite a bit. If they had Zara as a hostage, I had Aaron as a hostage. Even though Zara was more important to me than Aaron was important to anyone.

I got a sickening satisfaction by looking at him like this and I was a little relieved that he was sedated right now. Saves me the trouble of torturing him.

Roland came up to me and told me about everything that had been done to ensure Aaron's safe stay here. Extra guards were posted at the borders and extra warriors patrolled the boundary of the safe house too. In addition to that, at least ten guards were stationed in the safe house, to watch over Aaron. Maybe this sounded too much but I didn't want to overlook any measure this time.

Aaron wasn't given any food or water to drink till now. He had, however, had a pretty good taste of the warrior's torture techniques. I was itching to give Aaron a very good taste of my torture techniques, something he wouldn't forget soon.

I spotted Ethan from the corner of my eye, hunched over Aaron's unconscious body, looking like he wanted to kill the rogue. I could relate to that; my patience was hanging by a very tiny thread.

After making sure everything was alright, I asked Ethan to accompany me and we walked out of the safe house. "I plan to go to the hospital to meet Aiden. What do you plan to do?"

"I'm too anxious to sit still right now. So, I'm going to go for a run." Ethan remarked while I walked towards my car.

"Ethan, my wolf is going to heal very soon. I can practically feel the wolfsbane being flushed out of my system. As soon as that happens, I'm shifting into my wolf and going to search for Zara. I want you to come with me. So, I want you to run in your human form and keep your phone with you." I suggested to him and watched as he agreed to do so without any reluctance.

I got into my car and drove towards the hospital, eager to talk to Aiden. He has been my confidante for years and the itch to bounce off ideas and thoughts was something I wanted to do right now. When I reached Aiden's room, I went inside without knocking and found it empty. I was informed by the nurse's station that Aiden had been taken by Samantha to meet with my father. Great, now I could talk to two people and get some sane advice.

I took the elevator and reached the floor where Dad was assigned a room. I entered the door to find Mom, my baby sister, Sam, Aiden and Dad having a discussion. They all stopped talking when they noticed I was standing at the doorway.

"Oh, Harper! Come in. We have a lot to talk about. I want to know how your search for Zara went."  Mom patted the empty chair next to her and I went ahead and sat beside her.

I told all of them about how I had given in to my Wolf's impulses toward the mate bond to find Zara, as suggested by Harper. They all listened attentively and added appropriate comments in between. Being werewolves, they knew how hard it was for a werewolf to know that your mate was in the clutches of your enemies. I was grateful that they didn't comment on that because I was impatiently waiting for my wolf to heal and I could feel that I would be able to search for Zara in two or three hours.

The door opened and Roland walked in. She first bowed to my father and then to me. "Alpha, this package arrived for you at the pack borders." I noticed then that he was carrying a small package in his hands. I nodded at him to come forward and hand me the package, which looked more like a letter of some sort.

I opened the letter and a piece of folded paper fell out of it. I unfolded the letter and noticed that a photo was attached to the letter. I flipped the photo and my eyes widened at the image.

Zara was bound to a chair and was blindfolded. She looked to be in a small and cramped room, devoid of anything else. She didn't look hurt but the image of her bound and helpless still sparked a mad rage within me and I wanted to destroy every wolf who had laid a hand on her.

My wolf, not caring that he was still recuperating, fought with me for control. All he wanted to do right now was sink his jaws into the rogues and end this stupid battle once and for all.

I took a deep breath. The rogues had attacked this picture to get my attention and to let me know who had sent this message. I calmly pushed the picture of Zara towards my father, not trusting myself to look at it again, at least without going on a wild, murderous rampage.

I didn't note my father's reaction but I did note that he had shown the photo to Mom and gave it to Aiden to peruse. I focused my gaze on the written letters but my vision kept going blurry because of my rage and the power struggle going on between me and my wolf.

I took several deep breaths and tried to calm myself down. This wasn't the time to lose self-control and soon I was able to read the message intended for me.

You have someone I want and I have someone you want. I propose a truce meeting at the south border at 6 p.m. today. I'm coming with ten warriors. I suggest you do the same.

The message infuriated me to no end. He hadn't asked for a truce meeting. He had demanded one. He had ordered one and he expected me to do his bidding. It was meant to be insulting because he knew that the someone, I wanted from him was more important than anything else, which led me to believe that the tall guy who I had seen manhandling Zara knew that she was my mate and he was going to take every advantage of the knowledge.

"What does it say?" Dad asked after several minutes.

I looked up at him, to see everyone was waiting for my response. "The rogues want a truce meeting."

~ Harper’s POV ~ A truce meeting is a meeting between the ranked wolves of the two opposing packs, or in this case, rogues. The meeting is supposed to be held on neutral grounds so that neither of the sides has any outright advantage over the other. The purpose of holding this meeting was to try to resolve the friction between the two sides by conversation and settlement rather than engaging in a battle in which innocents would die and perish. The motive of this meeting could also be to exchange hostages, even though it happened on very rare occasions because mutual agreement in such cases was very hard to achieve. Different sides demanded different things and thus, settlement rarely happened. The law of truce meetings stated that for the duration of the meeting, there would be no violence between the parties. Both parties were honor-bound by the laws of the werewolf community to restrain themselves from attacking each other. These laws have been enforced for so long that there hasn

~ Harper’s POV ~ Natalie, who happens to be my Luna at the moment, had just screamed that she had found his mate. This could have happened at a better time because, by the looks of it, my Luna had just found out that her mate was a part of the rogues who had been targeting our pack for months. These rogues have harmed innocent people and massacred innocent children. With my luck, the very leader of the rogue pack would be Natalie's mate, the one with those huge bulky, and muscular arms. I could imagine her distress. Her mate was now looking at her when she was already mated to an alpha. Moreover, it was no secret that Natalie had also given birth to my son. That bit of information was surely going to cause problems in her future with her mate. I'm sure she knew she would face several complications when she first knew that she had conceived all those months ago. I'm pretty sure she must have been mentally preparing herself for this situation but there is a vast difference between pr

I opened my eyes and faintly registered that I had been drugged. I had expected to be bound to the same chair when I opened my eyes. Even when I was drugged, my subconscious had been extremely curious about the time the rogue leader, Damon had roughly manhandled me and thrust me in a car no matter how much I struggled. I could still somehow hear the noise of fighting, of wolves growling and sniping at each other, and the moans and groans of those in pain. When I opened my eyes, I didn't see an abysmal room and I wasn't tied to a chair, unable to move and unable to speak. Instead, when I opened my eyes, I noticed that I was barefoot and the extremely soft grass tickled my feet. I distinctly remember wearing my shoes when I had been drugged, so why wasn't I wearing my shoes right now? I noticed the huge moon and the silent waterfall in the distance. The backdrop had an ethereal feel and as I neared the edge of the cliff, I realized that I was in the same place where I met the moon godde

I blinked rapidly, still reeling from the dream and the revelations of it. I clenched and unclenched my bound hands to get some feeling in them. I gasped when I felt the tight bindings chafe my wrists. This was the first time I had opened my eyes since I was roughly manhandled and thrust into a truck amid severe chaos, and was drugged which had put me in a lull. I was in a new room and it was so dark I was hardly able to look at the wall before me. The room looked empty and for once, I was glad that I didn't have any company because I had too much on my mind and I wouldn't have been able to entertain anyone in such a state. My stomach growled and the sound echoed in the room and I was glad when a door behind me opened and spilled light into the room. I grew antsy as the person who had entered my room came into my view and was immediately giddy when I saw that it was Addison and she was carrying some food for me. I smiled brightly at her but frowned when she just put the tray on my l

~ Harper’s POV ~All of us stood frozen in place and watched as the cars drove away from us. What the hell just happened? I would have been reeling after this meeting because it had not gone as I had expected. All of this was to free Zara and make her safe, in exchange for Aaron. Now, Aaron was free and I was clutching the hand of a terrified boy who was my responsibility because I was his alpha. The reason why all of us were unable to utter any word was that the rogue had called me his 'brother'. Was this supposed to be metaphorical or was something used to taunt me? I was sure everyone wanted answers to these questions and I turned around to find everyone's eyes fixed on me, watching my every move, waiting for me to do something. There was nothing to be done. I wanted answers and there was only one place I could get them. My wolf had not yet recuperated from the attack of wolfsbane but even he was too restless to care about the side effects of the poison right now. I called on him

~ Harper’s POV ~My ears were ringing and my head was pounding with the revelations made by my father. I could see from my mother's stony face that she had had no idea that my father had had another family out there somewhere. He had hidden this fact from us for so long as if it were inconsequential and wouldn't matter to us. Moreover, he had discarded this small family because he didn't want to risk his life with his mate, something which would happen anyway. I had no idea what my mom would do now but I would support her without any second thoughts because doing something other than that was out of the question. Zara had been with Ethan in front of my eyes and it burned my very soul to see her with him. It took every ounce of self-control I had to reel my wolf and not let him tear Ethan into pieces. The thought of Zara having babies with someone else was imaginable for me. The ironic hypocrisy of the fact that I had a baby with Natalie, who was going to be the next alpha wasn't lost

I had no idea what to say. It all seemed unreal. How had Addison out of all people helped me get out of the clutches of the rogues? Of course, I had known that I would soon get away from the rogues and come back home safely, but I had imagined Harper and Ethan rescuing me. Why did she help me in the first place?I turned to look at Addison to know the answer to the very question when the doors of the pack house opened and I looked at Natalie and Samantha standing on the threshold, their eyes slowly taking me in, making sure that I was unharmed and safe. Then their eyes landed on Addison beside me and I noticed the slight stiffening of Samantha's shoulders. Aaron, who happened to be Addison's brother was the reason why Aiden had been fighting for his life, and best to my knowledge, he was still in the hospital regaining his strength. It must have gutted him to stay away from the battle between the pack warriors and the rogues. Natalie had adopted a blank mask over her face and I knew

Ethan was dead, I repeated the three words in my head as I lunged at Damon and he escaped my attacks by ducking at the last minute. My mind was boggled. It was stunting and I found it hard to believe that the corpse a few feet away was standing alive a few minutes ago. Ethan had howled to the pack members and had declared victory over Aaron. How had he been defeated by Damon? It seemed so unbelievable. I was facing difficulty in accepting the simple face. I had no idea how Zara was going to accept her dear friend was dead.Damon growled viciously at me, murder in his eyes, while I probably looked dazed and a bit uncentred. Bonus Chapter: Ethan's POVWhen you grow up as a werewolf, all you ever hear is the word 'mate', because people around you can't stop talking about them. Some elders talk about mates with a dazed but happy look in their eyes and you can easily tell how much they love their mates. When young people talked to mates, you could practically feel their longing and the love they had for their mates. When teenagers talk about mates, you can feel their desperation to find their mates and be one with them. Rejections in my pack were extremely rare and every werewolf lived happily ever after with their fated mates. There were no doubts, no questions asked because your mate could be the exact fit of your soul, your second half, and the one who you are supposed to live as long as you live. Growing up and watching my parents and pack members, this is all I had watched and learned, that a mate was for you to love, hold and protect till the end of your days. When you're brought up like that, the ide

EPILOGUE 3: HARPER'S POV (TEN YEARS LATER)It was three years ago when Mason was first teased by a classmate about the unusual arrangement of his parents. I had always known that as he was growing up, he became especially attuned to the fact that the way his family lived wasn't exactly normal by usual standards. There were so many unusual factors that they were bound to seem different to him and I wasn't exactly prepared for how Mason was coping with how different his family seemed to be from any other family in the pack. As the future alpha, it was essential to be a part of the pack because other people were often intimidated by the power you had and by the power you would have in the future. My father always taught me to be a part of the pack but always remember that you could never essentially be a part of the pack. And this is exactly what I had taught Mason to do; I had asked him to play with all the other wolf kids but always remember that in the future, he will be responsible

I hated being the centre of attention and walking down an aisle and standing in front of all the pack members to take part in the Luna ceremony was exactly that, being the centre of attention. Harper had told me that since I was the true luna of the pack, the ceremony would be a little different and I wasn't sure how that would affect me as I hadn't exactly attended Natalie's ceremony. I weakly smiled at all the pack members assembled in the pack grounds and started walking down the aisle towards the raised stage at the front of the pack. I was barefoot to pay homage to the natural aspect of the pack and to respect the raw nature of the wolves. The grass was soft beneath my feet and I immediately compared the softness to the grass in the spirit world where I used to meet the moon goddess. Harper had instructed me to not look around an

His amazing body heat and the tingles that danced all over my skin whenever we touched made me let out a deep, sleepy moan. I felt Harper stir beside me and felt his arm settle on my bare hip, eliciting a heady warmth to settle deep in my belly. His thumb gently caressed my hip bone and I moved closer to him, determined to have as much skin contact as possible and leave no space between us. Harper's scent surrounded me, which brought an involuntary sleepy smile to my face. Even with my eyes closed, I could picture Harper's slightly upturned nose as he slept. It was too hard to resist his adorable expressions so most of the time, I didn't even try. My head rested on his shoulder and my face settled in the crook of his neck. Without needing to open my eyes, I leaned forward and planted an open-mouthed kiss on Ha

I thought about it for so many months, because the act of being marked by Harper seemed final. It felt like a full stop and in a way, it was final, an end. I knew the meaning of being marked even before I had decided to go away when I had learned of Natalie's pregnancy. I had asked him to mark me so many months ago and he had refused. It seemed so long ago, Aiden's birthday party when he found out that Samantha was his mate. So much has happened since then, things that have made me value the most precious things in life, let go of grudges, and the importance of relationships. After all, I have been through, I believe I have grown as a person. Not just me either, I know that all of us, Harper, Natalie, Samantha, and Aiden have grown up and matured in a way that most eighteen-year-olds don't. We had just gotten back after performing the final rites of the pack warriors who had lost their lives from the battle with the rogues. Needless to say, we needed some time to regain our bearings before we mingled with the rest of the world. I had done it before when my father was fighting for his life and I still found it jarring to my being, to perform the final rites of the werewolves who lose their lives.
