Chapter one

Lightning struck across the pale gloomy sky as thunder rumbled through the heavens. The fire burst around the house spreading tiny sparks of flames everywhere. The house was falling apart as the fire licked through the woods.

Alyssa could see smoke rising through the chimney as she panicked. "Come on, let's go," Verne said as he held her and they ran towards the backdoor.

They got out of the house before it finally erupted into flames. Alyssa quivered, as someone yelled out, "they're escaping!" and the enemies charged towards their direction.

"Run!" Verne said pushing Alyssa forward as he blocked the telekinetic waves that one of the clan had released from his hand. Using his telekinesis to take away a few arrows the men were pulling, he drove them into the hearts of the other clans.

In Alyssa's haste to do his bidding, she fell to the ground and in a blur, a burst of flame erupted out of nowhere, and from the corner of her eyes, I could see a flaming tree falling towards her direction.

She screamed in fright and reached out to divert the tree to another angle, but before she could do it, She was lifted off the ground.

Verne held her tightly to himself as he averted another falling flamed tree. A little sigh of relief escaped her lips as she realized he was the one. He placed her down, and held her hand as they began to run again.

The enemies were coming after them, and arrows and spears were flying through the air. With his demon powers, Verne used his telekinesis to evade the incoming spear, as they kept running away.

Still, the enemies were closing in on them. Knowing that he won't be able to protect er for long, Verne turned to her, as he let go of her hand. "Run as fast as you can and don't look back," he said to her.

"No," she said in disagreement. "This is our fight. I'm not going to leave you," she said to him.

He grabbed her hands and held them. "Please listen to me," he said to her, and for the first time, his heart ached knowing that he could not protect her, and the fear of losing her was overwhelming. The world was against them, and against their love. "You have to leave," he said to her in a pleading voice.

She shook her head, her eyes glistened in unshed tears. "I'm not leaving without you," she said remaining adamant. She shivered, as she realized the clan had caught up with them.

Verne turned to see the clan behind them. "You really want to go against the heavens and the force of nature because of her?" One of them demanded. Verne cocked a smile without giving an answer. "You want to lose your life than leave her? You're the Yoshi!" He yelled.

"I'll rather die than leave her, Taron," Verne said with a bitter smile.

"Then death you shall get!" Taron yelled, and the clan attacked again.

Verne curled his hands into a fist, as he turned around sending blasts of wind towards them. Alyssa stood her ground, also defending herself as she crossed her hands together, and her powers sprouted from the tip of her fingers, as she used them on the enemies. She wasted no time in lifting two up in the air, and squeezed life out of them without touching them, until an arrow grazed her shoulder, and she fell to the ground.

She gasped, as she tried to pull herself up, without noticing an attacker coming closer to her.

"Alyssa!" Verne yelled in frantic desperation when he noticed, causing her to look back at him with perplexity, and shock in her eyes, and he sent a swirl of wind to a man that was at the verge of attacking her.

She gasped frantically as she got up, and he ran towards her. He hugged her close as he bridged the gap between them, and he turned around, with her still held protectively in his arms. He swallowed hard. "Are you alright?" He asked her, almost in a whisper.

She nodded a little, and for a few fleeting seconds, she savored the moments of her in his arms. She was oblivious to the chaos going on around her, as her arms were behind him, on his shoulders, she hugged him closely. I can't wait for this to be over, Verne, she thought to herself.

Verne looked up from her neck, and turned around swiftly again, as he clung onto her as he winced, and that was when Alyssa noticed something was amiss.

"Verne?" She called him, her voice croaked with tears, and all he did was smile. A faint smile that Alyssa could tell was sad.

Verne swallowed as he forced his eyes to keep open, as he gazed at her lovingly, one last time.

Alyssa reached for his back and gasped, as she felt the elongated piece of steel that pierced through his back, and tears rolled down her cheek as she realized arrows were two. "No," she broke down, sobbing slowly, as she lifted her face from his chest.

"It's okay," Verne said weakly. "I'll protect you till my last breath," he said to her.

She shook her head, holding him close, as tears cascaded from her eyes freely, and she sobbed harder.

Verne cupped her cheeks. "I'll always love you, Alyssa. Always and forever,"  he said, as he let go of her.

"Please, don't leave me," she pleaded, holding his hand tight.

"You're the sole reason I breathe, Alyssa, and I do not mind losing my breath than you losing your life. I swore I'll protect you, Alyssa, and I must fulfill my promise." He said, as pulled her behind him, and released his telekinesis again, sending some of the warriors  flying into the trees.

He was too weak to defend her or himself, but he used himself as a body shield to protect her from the multiple arrows that were aimed towards her. He stood in front of her, unmoving, as the clan released the arrows and they pierced into his body, and he fell on his knees.

"No, please, no." Alyssa sobbed as she fell beside him.
