CHAPTER 11

GIAI“The Open Bar. 6 pm.”Mr Quinten had also sent his picture so it would help me identify him easier. Bella wanted to come with me but I hadn't discussed that with Mr Quinten so I refused. She made me wear a wig so it wouldn't be very obvious. I made sure that Juan came back and got settled in before I left the house. As soon as the car stopped in front of the bar, my phone rang. “Hello?”“Are you there yet?” I was staring at the club's bright letters sign from across the street and I watched people go in. But I didn't answer him. I was interested in another piece of information. “How did you get my number?”He laughed out loud.“Is that what you're worried about?" “Yes, I don't give my number to just anyone so how did you get it?”He sighed heavily. “I have my ways, Miss Everly. Let's just say that. Good luck tonight."He ended the call before I could even say anything. Sighing and putting my phone in my bag, I bent down to speak to Evan. “Evan, you know you can go home

CHAPTER 12

GIAII marched into his office at noon the next day, not even looking at his secretary, whose smile I'm sure would have pissed me off. He was on his phone and before he could say a word, I threw the recorder on his table. “Never make me do something like that again.”I plopped down on the cashier because I was so tired. I had barely gotten any sleep; I was highly irritated because he kept groping me, and my head ached from the loud music. “You seemed to do a good job. I'm proud of you.”Now, he was the one making me uncomfortable. The recorder came on and I heard a static first before it started playing. I first heard my voice. “What can you tell me about the Javon Quinten court case?”He was so out of it that I didn't even know when I slapped him. I flinched when I heard it on the speaker. “Why did you slap him?”I shrugged. “He was pissing me off.”The fact that he ended up throwing up towards the end of the recording made me cringe. Eli's eyes were still on me when I looke

JAVON“What’s that supposed to be?” I pointed at the plate in front of me. She smiled proudly like she had done something worth commending. “I brought you food. I heard you hadn't eaten all day and I decided to get you something to eat.”“Take this rubbish and get out of my office."Her smile fell. “But I spent all day making this for you. You should taste it-”“The last time I ate something you made, I landed in the hospital. I won't say it again, get out of my office.”She marched away but I called her back. “Get this thing out of my face.”She came back and picked up the plate, murmuring as she left and slammed the door. Two years after Gaia left, my mother found out about everything that happened and she brought Stephanie into my home to “take care of me.”I specifically told her that I wasn't interested in her and I would never be, but she refused to listen, saying that it didn't matter as Gaia had already left me and that I would grow to like Stephanie. It had been three y

CHAPTER 14

EVELYN “I managed to get you a seat at the next court hearing. Don't ask me how I did it, just know that I did it.”I was shocked, to say the least. I mean, we'd been trying to get just anybody to talk about what happened and somehow, he was able to get me a seat in the next hearing? “Don’t tell me you made me a juror.” I joked. He gave me a side-eye. “I’m powerful but I'm not that powerful. You'll be attending the meeting as an intern to a friend who's also a lawyer on the military's side. I was able to speak to him and he was willing to take you on as long as you don't cause any trouble.”What trouble would I want to cause? The only thing I can do is curse Javon while he stands there being guilty because I know he is. With the kind of man he was, he couldn't tell me that he wasn't guilty. I didn't know the full background of the story but he hadn't given me reason to believe that he was any more innocent than the military was trying to make him. “That’s fine. I'll handle thing

CHAPTER 15

GAIA I spent the day at home, well most of it anyway. I looked for anything that the media could tell me about the court case but there was little to no news coverage about the issue. Mainly because it had to do with the military and also because it would be a slap on the military's face if it's found out by the public that a civilian made away with weapons..First off, the entire country would be thrown into chaos because they would fear about whose hands those guns would get into and also, it meant the military wasn't reliable anymore. I jumped from site to site, jotting down a few things that seemed important, and decided to ask Mr Quinten about it when I went into the office. Hearing this issue happen seemed like a dream to me because according to the news, his company was dropping and losing money. Of course, they didn't know what was going on exactly, but they could see the statistics, and they knew something was wrong. His company has lost a significant amount of money an

EVELYNIf Javon's appearance did anything to me, it made me more determined to bring him down. I didn't have plans to go to the office the next day but because of him, I went there. Mr Quinten was just on his way out. “Hey, I need to speak to you.” He looked absent-minded and worried. “What do you need? I'm busy right now.”He walked past me so quickly that I had to run after him and follow him into the elevator. “I wanted to ask you some questions about the case. The security footage, can you get it? I read somewhere that Javon's lawyers were saying that the image was not clear enough to identify that it was him."His attention was on his phone and he was typing furiously. “Mr Quieten!”He looked up. “Yes? What did you say?"I had to repeat myself and make sure that he was listening to me this time around. “The footage is tightly secured. If anything happens to it, then all evidence of Javon being connected to this case gets lost. The military is securing it to have their ca

CHAPTER 17

EVELYN I sat in the restaurant with my legs bouncing up and down in anticipation as my heart thudded loudly in my chest. I didn't want to pick up the call, and I breathed out in relief when the first call ended, but before I could continue thinking, the phone vibrated again in my hand, and I couldn't help but be scared. I'd never had a good relationship with my father, even from the start. He'd always hated me and he wasn't afraid to show it. I knew from the time when I started growing up and I noticed the way he treated me differently. My friends always spoke about their fathers and the way they spent time with them and they bought them things. But not my father. My father didn't care for me, he didn't even know I existed until he saw me or I got into trouble. It wasn't even something that I could do anything about. Everything I did was an issue to him. I couldn't go out with my friends, I couldn't have friends over, I couldn't smile or be happy like other kids my age. He expe

CHAPTER 18

JAVON The meeting with the board didn't go so well. Mainly because I wasn't listening and then they kept asking me questions. Today's meeting was for me to explain how the court case was affecting the company. Sales were going down since the public knew that the CEO of the company was in hot water with the military. “It’s not good for the business. it's affecting us. I mean, what will the public say?!”I didn't have the strength to answer these men, especially Mr Bertram who had always been after me. “Let the public say what they want to say. That's why they're the public, their opinions don't matter. Things are under control. Don't make them to be more than they are.”I didn't even want to attend this meeting in the first place because I knew how it was going to go but my assistant made me. My company was going through a lot with the current case against me and it was affecting me greatly. “How can you say a thing like that? They're the reason you have this company in the firs

CHAPTER 19

JAVON I collected the phone from her as she stretched it towards me. I looked at the screen and couldn't believe what I was seeing. “I don't believe this. I would never sleep with you even with a gun pointed to my bead.”I got off the bed and began picking her clothes from the floor and I threw them at her. “Dress up and get out.”I picked up my phone to see ten missed calls from my lawyers. Wonderful, the last thing I needed was more trouble than needed. “Javon, why are you acting like this? I'm not the one who brought myself here. You brought me here, you approached me.”I turned around to face her. “Also, why the hell did you take pictures?”“Because I knew you were going to act like this so I needed proof that I didn't seduce you.”Why did I find that hard to believe? I wanted to say something but I just couldn't remember what it was. I tried to remember at what point I went over to her but my memory stopped at the bar when the bartender came to me. I don't even know how

CHAPTER 20

EVELYN I didn't plan to let him know of my involvement early which is why I was surprised when he saw me outside. But it was all good. Early or not, it still didn't change the fact that I was now the lawyer.I'd received a call last night, saying that Mr Fulham, the man I was supposed to be under, had called in sick and he had asked that I take his place. At first, I couldn't believe what I was hearing because the chances of this happening at this point were so slim, but it had happened, and now, I was here. “Plaintiff, you say you have a witness in court today?”Even though I'd done this many times before, my heart was still beating in my chest as the judge called for me. But I didn't show it. “Yes, your Honor. I do.”I turned to the audience. “Sergeant Clay. Please step forward to the podium.”As the man walked up to the podium, I took that time to steal a glance at Javon. Based on what I'd heard and read, Javon should react. But even as he looked at the man until he got to the
