CHAPTER 17

EVELYN

I sat in the restaurant with my legs bouncing up and down in anticipation as my heart thudded loudly in my chest.

I didn't want to pick up the call, and I breathed out in relief when the first call ended, but before I could continue thinking, the phone vibrated again in my hand, and I couldn't help but be scared.

I'd never had a good relationship with my father, even from the start. He'd always hated me and he wasn't afraid to show it.

I knew from the time when I started growing up and I noticed the way he treated me differently. My friends always spoke about their fathers and the way they spent time with them and they bought them things. But not my father.

My father didn't care for me, he didn't even know I existed until he saw me or I got into trouble.

It wasn't even something that I could do anything about. Everything I did was an issue to him. I couldn't go out with my friends, I couldn't have friends over, I couldn't smile or be happy like other kids my age.
