CHAPTER 31

GAIAEvan dropped a file on my table and I looked up from my laptop. “What is this?”Without waiting for him to answer, I picked up the file and brought out its contents. They were pictures. Pictures of Jacob and Mr. Upperman talking. “Those were taken last night. Jacob's life is riding on this and that is probably why he's being very jittery. If this plan doesn't work, they'll kill him and apparently, he signed some agreement to state this. He's collected money from Upperman for this and it has to work.”It's no wonder Jacob was going too hard and making my life hell. Well, I wasn't the one who signed that contract. The next group of pictures was of Jacob with Sergeant Clay. I knew it! I knew Clay had someone behind him and from the way he was behaving when Jacob walked into the building that day, I should have known there was something. But I wasn't prepared for the next picture. It was a picture of Clay being shot, right in the head. “What the hell happened?” I asked Evan.“J

CHAPTER 32

GAIAKnowing how today was going to go got me shivering. My hands and feet were cold and my palms were sweaty. I could barely get any sleep at night because of how shaky I was. Was I sure I could do this? There was something in me that made me doubt but I just had to kill it because I couldn't back out now. As I walked in, the first person I saw was Jacob and Mark and some of the other men filling out one seat. They were here to make sure things went according to plan. As if that was not enough, the media had been called in. I was sure that was the work of Upperman. He had asked that the media should cover the case so that the news of Javon being arrested for theft would be broadcast immediately. Javon's lawyers were already here and I wanted this to be the final straw. The final day. Being that Clay was dead would be to my advantage but I didn't know how to bring that in yet. Perhaps I could wait a bit and let it be an element of surprise. His lawyers opened today's argument.

CHAPTER 33

GAIA“That can't be a coincidence, can it?”Judge Clearwater spoke up. “I request for a thirty-minute recess.”At this point, he was now a suspect, and he didn't exactly have the time to say anything, so the jury was in charge now. “A thirty minute is granted, within which time Judge Clearwater would be held in custody along with his other accomplices while another judge is brought in to handle the case.”That should be good. They wouldn't be able to communicate with each other. As Jacob was being dragged away, he tried to speak to me. “You think you've won? I'll get you back for this! I'll get you!”His other friends were too stunned to say a word and they took all of them outside. Javon crossed the room to meet me. “That was good right?”“Yes, it was but we have to wait for the jury and the new judge to say something. Hopefully, the new judge won't be on Upperman’s payroll again.” That was my fear. What if he was working with one of them again? “I need some fresh air.” I wal

CHAPTER 34

GAIAThey'd all been arrested. Jacob, Mark Upperman, and the rest. Everyone is involved in this case. I still couldn't believe I was able to pull off this case because the chances of being covered up were very high. After all, these men were rich. Very rich and at the end of the day, I might be the one who gets into trouble for trying to speak up. Knowing the American justice system, I feared that I might go down to try to find out the truth. The case gained more publicity than it was supposed to and that was exactly what they didn't want. Now, it was on every major news outlet and it would only be so long before they would be taken to court. It has also given me publicity. I was now the lawyer who saved Javon Quinten from going to jail. Since the media's knowledge of marriage five years ago was limited to them, I was just a lawyer. Back then, we were still really young, and my parents didn't think that exposing us to the press would be good for our marriage and its building, so

CHAPTER 35

GAIA I stepped out onto the marble pavement, my heart thudding loudly in my chest with my jittery hand holding the umbrella over my head. I remembered that my father had come to meet me a few weeks before, saying that I didn't have a lot of time left. Of course, I didn't listen to him and I'd even forgotten that I'd seen him because of how busy he was. Even if I wasn't busy, I doubted that I would have wanted to see him or speak to him either way. My father was dying and I didn't know how to feel about that. The fact that I didn't exactly have an award-winning relationship with him just made things worse. I didn't want to be anywhere close to him or my mother. Being back in this house after all these years made my feet cold. Despite the rain, I could still feel it numbing up because of how my brain had been trained to react when I was in this house. The first thing I noticed was that the house was quiet, and I wasn't seeing maids and guards moving around the house. The house wa

CHAPTER 36

GAIA“Why didn't you ask for help from your friends? Surely, someone was willing to help out?”She scoffed and at first, it sounded like she was coughing but I could see the way her lips turned up in a bitter smirk. “Those hypocrites? They all ran away from us when things went south. Some of them even came here to harass your father and I about the money we were owing them and your father got arrested on multiple occasions because of it. We could get any help.”“Is that why you had to let all the servants go?”She nodded. My mother was raised in money so she wasn't brought up to know how to do my house chores. She was disowned though, for marrying my father who was broke at the time. I wasn't even surprised to hear this. It was obvious those people were here for the money and as soon as things went bad, they showed their real colors. But it was a very unfair thing to do. Some of them had been family friends for years and they had been long time friends of my father. Or so he thoug

CHAPTER 37

GAIAWe sat outside on one of those benches that people usually sat on when their loved one was in the hospital when they had not heard a single piece of good news, and they were on the verge of giving up. As I clutched the bottle of water in my hand and sat in silence beside him, I looked at the passing cars and suddenly felt sleepy. “I tried to help-”“I know, my mother told me. She told me everything you did. I should thank you but I don't think the words would come out of my mouth.”He nodded. “That’s fine.”There was honestly nothing to say to him. Just because he was innocent in that case didn't mean we were suddenly friends and I would suddenly forgive him for everything. At the end of the day, it still didn't change what he did, and nothing ever will, so we were still back to square one. I stood up and held my bag in my hand. “I need to go check on my parents.”He held me back just like I knew he would and stood up. “Gaia, I don't know if you have the time but I need t

CHAPTER 38

GAIAIt took a whole lot for me to get back on my feet. The publicity the case gained shook my business in good ways and bad. First off, it gave us more market and I could see that if things went well enough, we just might be making even more profit this year. We got more investors from places we had never heard of before. Now, the bad news was that it was going to go down in history that my company had once been involved in a scandal like this. That wasn't exactly the kind of reputation I wanted but right now, there was nothing I could do about it. I was happy about the height that my company has attained in the past month since the case was settled. I'd asked my lawyers to keep me in the loop about what happened with Jacob and the rest. They deserved to stay in jail and rot for the rest of their lives and I will make sure that happens. They won't get away from trying to do this to me. Now that things were back to normal for me, I was still trying to get the one thing that I wan

CHAPTER 39

GAIAI opened the door and entered his room, the light from the candles illuminating his dark room. Bella turned on the lights and we began to sing happy birthday to him. He was fully awake now, a small smile on his face even though it was very obvious that he was confused about what was going on. Bella and I finished singing that song and dropped the cake on his lap to make a wish. ”Blow out your candles and make a wish!”As he closed his eyes and put his hands together, I watched my little baby that I'd given birth to a few years back as he was already such a grown boy. My Juan was six already and it didn't feel real. It was like time was taking him away from me and I wanted him back. “Happy birthday, my lovely boy. I'm so proud to be your mother and I love you so much, you have no idea. You're the best thing I've ever done and I hope your days are filled with laughter and you never have to cry. I love you, Juan.”I pulled him in for a hug and I didn't even know that there were

CHAPTER 40

GAIAIt wasn't easy tracking down the maid that was in the hospital ward with me that day. It had been so long ago and I doubted she still worked with Javon. Thankfully, I had Evan who used to be his master of staff. “Evan, do you remember the day my baby died?”Obviously shocked about where this conversation was coming from, he turned around and looked at me with wide eyes. “Yes ma'am. I remember.” “Do you remember seeing any maid in the hospital with me that day?”He came down from the ladder he had used to hang Juan's picture on my wall. “A maid? You mean from the old house?”I nodded. “No, I don't. Why do you ask?”I showed him a seat and sat opposite him. “There was a maid there and I'm very sure she worked at the house. She smelled so familiar.”He was silent for a moment. “Okay, then. I can help you check for her. Did you see her face?”I thought back to that day. I was very out of it so I might have actually seen her but didn't remember. But I could still remember seei
