“Why didn't you ask for help from your friends? Surely, someone was willing to help out?”

She scoffed and at first, it sounded like she was coughing but I could see the way her lips turned up in a bitter smirk.

“Those hypocrites? They all ran away from us when things went south. Some of them even came here to harass your father and I about the money we were owing them and your father got arrested on multiple occasions because of it. We could get any help.”

“Is that why you had to let all the servants go?”

She nodded. My mother was raised in money so she wasn't brought up to know how to do my house chores. She was disowned though, for marrying my father who was broke at the time.

I wasn't even surprised to hear this. It was obvious those people were here for the money and as soon as things went bad, they showed their real colors.
