Her fingers mindlessly pressed buttons until a drama started playing.
She simply followed the storyline, and got carried away. The actress on screen was in the middle of an angry outburst, trying to calm herself down with food—ordering a super spicy jjamppong.
The actress devoured the spicy steaming noodle soup. Her face looks melting with satisfaction.
She said spicy flavors helped relieve emotions. It triggered certain nerves, making the brain feel more relaxed and happy. The effect, supposedly, was as powerful as drinking or eating something sweet.
‘At this hour, something soupy seemed much more appealing instead of ice cream,’ Ashley thought.
Her eyes suddenly glanced at the clock on the wall. It showed past 2 AM.
"It's almost morning," she muttered. Her stomach was also hungry because she hadn't eaten dinner yet. Her last meal was a light snack at her wedding party this afternoon. She even had to swallow with difficulty due to being under a chaotic feeling.
"Hh... I really want that. But there's no way any restaurants are open this late. Or... maybe there is?"
Not expecting much, she grabbed her phone. Started opening and searching through the food delivery app.
To her surprise, several places were still open and available for serving twenty-four hour delivery.
Driven by hunger, she quickly placed an order, plus adding many other super spicy snacks.
Nearly an hour later, the food arrived, and she wasted no time digging in.
"Mmm, so good," she murmured. Her hands expertly twirling the noodles with her chopsticks and slurping them up like a true Korean. "Haa, spicy... Hmm. I should've ordered two servings."
She enjoyed her meal wholeheartedly. The actress in the drama was right. The kind of comfort food also helped her body feel warm.
Several times, Josh’s words from earlier flickered in her mind—the ones she had overheard while eavesdropping. About him mentioning dinner.
But every time the thought surfaced, she pushed it away.
It was totally better to know nothing than to know a lot of things and end up overthinking.
If Josh was out there enjoying himself with his girlfriend, then she could have her own kind of fun too.

Josh was smiling as wide as he could when Sharon opened the door. She responded with a wry face and rolling eyes. Then turned around and threw herself roughly onto the sofa with a dramatic flop.
“Are you mad again?” Josh asked softly. “I already bought your favorite spiced chicken.”
The plastic bag containing Sharon’s order—two boxes of fried chicken and a couple of bottles of beer—was placed on the kitchen table as he walked past. Then, he followed the girl to the couch and sat next to her.
“If you keep pouting like that, your food will get sad.”
He reached out to caress her hair, but she quickly moved away and turned her face in the opposite direction.
Josh let out a small sigh.
“You don’t like me here?” His voice came out still in a smooth tone.
He waited, but got no answer. Sharon kept her back to him, without moving or making a sound. Only her shoulders rising and falling in a steady rhythm.
“Want me to leave again? Hm? You still don’t want to see me?”
Suddenly, the girl quickly turned her head and showed her twisted face and angry pout. Her lips were pursed, and her eyebrows knitted so tightly they almost touched.
Josh, seeing her expression, struggled to hold back his laughter, settling for a faint smile instead.
“Wow... What’s that? Why is my girlfriend making that face?” He teased her.
Josh knew well about Sharon's mannerisms when she was angry and whining like this—her tantrums and dramatic sulking. Like a child fishing for more attention. That was why he never left right away. Instead, he stayed, patiently persuading her, trying anything and everything until she eventually softened on her own.
“How annoying!” Sharon huffed. “What's wrong with my face? Now you think my face is ugly? Because you already have a wife, and you think she’s prettier than me, is that it?”
The moment the words left her mouth, regret flashed across his face. It seemed that he had not been careful enough in speaking just now. He really had no idea how to fix it.
Josh sighed inwardly.
“But… I never said you were ugly,” he replied, deliberately putting on a wounded expression, making sure she could see the sadness in his eyes.
“Hmph!” Sharon looked away and turned her back on him again, crossing her arms.
“Babe…” Josh shifted closer to the girl and rested his forehead against her shoulder. “Please stop being mad at me. I had such a rough day. Everyone was yelling at me. I rushed here because I missed you. I didn’t even have time to take a shower.”
“No wonder you stink.”
Sharon turned toward him without pulling herself away or pushing him off. She wrinkled her nose, as if she smelled something bad.
Josh lifted his head, “Really?” His eyes widened in fake surprise before he sniffed himself, checking to confirm.
“Yeah,” Sharon said, narrowing her eyes. “But I don’t know if it is just the smell of your sweat… or—” Sharon's eyes sharpened and her tone darkened again, “I should be even angrier if there’s another girl’s scent on you.”
Josh swallowed hard. He remembered an earlier incident. About how he had deliberately hugged Ashley and pinned her to the bed. He secretly prayed her perfume hadn’t lingered on him. From this distance, Sharon didn’t seem to catch anything suspicious, but still…
“Of course not,” his eyes trembling. “I didn’t even touch her hand.”
He tried to remain calm so that his lie wouldn't show.
Sharon’s gaze dropped to his left hand. Her eyes fell on the silver wedding band. “You’re wearing that ring,” she pointed out. “How can you wear it without touching her hand?”
Josh exhaled sharply and massaged his forehead. “Afterwards. I mean, after that, I didn’t touch her at all.”
Every word he said only seemed to dig a deeper hole. He was slipping.
But then, to his surprise, Sharon suddenly let out a crisp laugh.
“Okay,” she said, grinning. “I believe you.”
Relief washed over him, and he smiled back. His hand reached up to stroke her cheek.
“I’ll clean up first then,” he murmured.
Sharon suddenly leaned towards Josh, and tilted her head. Her expression shifted in an instant. Her lips curled into a playful smirk. Her tone also changed completely with voice turning softer, sweeter, dripping with seductiveness.
“Want me to help you clean up?”
Her eyes sparkled lustfully.
Josh only smiled slightly. Somehow, his heart felt heavy at the thought of giving in to Sharon’s wishes. He didn’t have the energy, to be honest, with her. His body and mind were completely drained from dealing with problems he never expected. On top of that, he worried that if any trace of Ashley’s scent still lingered on his clothes, Sharon would definitely notice.A quiet sigh escaped his nose. His fingers, which had been gently caressing her cheek, now traced down to her full, red lips.“Do you want to do it?”Even so, he couldn’t bring himself to reject her outright. He had already hurt her enough by betraying her—by marrying another woman. Now he couldn't disappoint her more.Sharon grabbed Josh wrist and kissed his thumb. “I don’t know. I’m just not in the mood. I’d rather hit you than sleep with you.”Josh tilted his head spontaneously. Quite amazed that the girl wasn't excited. Usually, it was he who struggled to keep up with her.“How about you hit me after I shower?” he sm
Ashley gasped. When she opened her eyes, she found herself still in the living room. In a very uncomfortable position—sitting with her left side of her face resting on the table. The sunlight had already poured in and illuminated the entire room through the large glass window from one end of the wall to the other. It made her frown several times because of the glare. But the bright sunlight that had risen was nothing compared to the pain that shot through her when she raised her head.A fierce, dull ache filled her neck and shoulders, radiating upwards to tingle all the nerves in her head and downward as if gripping her shoulders and back. Even after managing to sit upright, her head was still tilted to the right—it was extremely difficult and stiff to move it back to its normal position. Groans of pain escaped her lips, echoed repeatedly there, as she struggled until finally managed to make her head face forward.Even after succeeding, the groans of pain continued to slip from her m
"Huh... Um, girl..." Bella was heard exhaling lazily, "You need to remember that Mike is a grown man. There's no need to worry about him that much either.""Grown men can also meet bad people and get into trouble, right?" Ashley replied, not convinced.Bella paused for a moment and then said, "Yes, he is. But don't you see his rock-like muscles?""Why have big muscles if you can't fight? Don't you remember last year he got beat up by a high school kid?"Bella winced, then chuckled. "Ouch... If he hears it from you, his heart must be hurting."They burst out laughing together. After the laughter faded, Ashley sat down on the couch and leaned back. "The important thing is that you confirm his whereabouts and condition first."Bella's voice was not heard for a moment, "I don't think it's necessary. Ash, I'm sure he's fine—though, yeah, his words are weird."Ashley raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "How do you know he's fine when you yourself think he's weird? He's also back to NZ tonight wit
"Yes, right?""Yes.""Yes, that's also a reasonable reason, although I didn't think of it that way yesterday. But what I experienced last night was really confusing. And again, as far as I know, ghosts are not picky about places," Bella began to speak in a low tone and elongated speech. As if deliberately creating a tense atmosphere. "They can be anywhere they like. Not only in dark or dirty spaces. In fact, it is said that ghosts nowadays like to inhabit clean and luxurious places."Ashley frowned, "Nonsense. Who said that?"But Bella didn't change her expression. She resumed her speech and lowered her voice even more, "I've seen it on supernatural programs—that kind of thing. And you know what makes the most sense?" Bella narrowed her eyes, hung her words, then paused for a moment. Her eyes continued to stare at her best friend unblinkingly, with a face that was made completely serious and seemed to hold a mystery waiting to be spewed out.Meanwhile, Ashley automatically responded w
Ashley rephrased her question, "After all those long stories—you’re telling me it wasn’t a ghost that bothered you? Then what? Who?" her tone firm but tinged with disbelief and one eyebrow rose. Not that she was disappointed because her best friend wasn't being haunted by ghosts, which meant there weren't any dangerous things lurking or to worry about. Because obviously no one in their right mind would want to experience horror—whether it was real or not. But what Ashley truly felt was frustration. After being so immersed in Bella’s story and feeling the chills crawl up her spine, it turned out that the whole story was just nonsense. She was even sure that Bella herself had no idea what or who had disturbed her throughout the night. There was no certainty whether it was connected to the strange woman who had entered Mike’s room earlier."Actually... I don't know," Bella replied nonchalantly. While picking at the assortment of dishes she had ordered as if completely unaware of how tens
Ashley called the waiter to ask for the bill after Bella had finished her meal. Both of their faces were still glowing from the lively conversation they'd shared."Wait," Bella squealed, quickly taking out her wallet as she noticed Ashley slipping her card into the bill holder."No, no. Keep it. I'll take it. You're my guest here," Ashley said.Bella's lips curled into a gentle smile as she tilted her head, "Thank you," replying with a cute, playful tone and facial expression.Ashley couldn't help but laugh."This is the least I can do. I feel bad for not spending more time with you while you were here."She let out a sigh, "I should have just gone out with you and Mike instead of handling all the wedding stuff that—" she sighed again as she realized she shouldn't say so many things that could cause prejudice.Bella gave her a reassuring grin. "Hey, don't say that. You did us a favor by sending a tour guide. It was nice to walk around on our own like real tourists on vacation."Ashley
"Mr. Kwak, if you see a pharmacy, please stop and get me some headache medicine," Jason said, taking a deep breath and letting it out. "I don't know why my head feels so heavy.""Yes, sir," the middle-aged driver replied, giving a quick nod, "I'll drive more slowly."That man with a well-defined oval face with sharp but refined features loosened his tie and unbuttoned the top button of his shirt. Then adjusted his sitting position so that he could lean his head against the seat, and closed his eyes. Hoping the tension would ease even a little. Not long after, the car came to a gentle stop."Sir, do you need anything else besides the medicine?"Jason slowly opened his eyes, blinking away the haze, "No. I don't need anything else. That's all."The driver nodded before stepping out of the car.Jason grabbed the water bottle next to him and took a long and refreshing sip.His schedule had been brutal over the past month. A lot of work piled up. And one engagement after another, each deman
"So, this is your house?"Josh gasped. He automatically jumped to his feet when he recognized the owner of the voice he knew so well was suddenly so close."Hyung—," Josh blinked tensely. And without him realizing it his eyes instinctively glanced to the spot where Sharon had just left.Of course, Jason caught that trembling glance. His eyes narrowed slightly. It felt so good, like he had caught a big fish. And Jason couldn’t help but feel a surge of satisfaction.Intending to play a little prank on his brother, Jason only gave a small nod, "Yeah?"Josh cleared his throat, his mind racing to come up with a reasonable excuse in this crucial moment. Until it unwittingly caused brief silence between them."I—had an important meeting... with a colleague here," he thinks he managed to give an answer. Followed by an awkward laugh that escaped her mouth immediately afterward. His demeanor was stiff, and his hands were clasped together—demonstrating a very bad lie."Oh, I see. But why lie at
Ashley could immediately grasp the meaning of Josh's words just now."Why are you saying that? As if you care about my status? Even if I end up becoming a widow, that's my problem, not yours."Although Ashley knew all of Josh's long words were not completely wrong, she felt that she couldn't admit it too quickly. Her ego was currently provoked too much to be assuaged in the blink of an eye.It was true that when the idea of divorce came into her head, she was completely blinded by the anger and disappointment that attacked her in one day. It seemed natural that she would lose her mind at that time. Then when her mouth proposed an agreement, it was solely because her pride was being trampled on by Josh and his uncivilized girlfriend. So she instinctively searched for a solution to regain her strength and a way to keep her from getting even worse—and to benefit herself. And somehow divorce was the only thing that came to mind. But this proved that Josh's words were not wrong. Ashley di
Josh looked at Ashley with mixed feelings. He just realized that what he did had a serious impact on other people besides himself and Sharon. All this time, so far, he only thought that he and Sharon were the only ones suffering from being in a difficult situation that was very unfair. But as it turned out, all these things also triggered Ashley's guilt. And what Ashley said was true. The complicated relationship that suddenly had to be established between the two of them did leave a big hole in Josh's heart. He was only good at covering it up by pretending to look fine when agreeing to their marriage. Then when his relationship with Sharon came to light, the uncomfortable feeling was certainly heightened by the outburst of various other types of emotions."No, you're not. You're not an intruder. It's better not to think that way. There's no point in feeling guilty. It's all too complicated."Josh's mission was to make up with Ashley. So right now, he tried to encourage her in any way
PRESENTJosh still vividly remembers filling his days with schemes of the best he could do after the news of the arranged marriage. Her mother knew, her father also, her two older siblings probably understood him even better—that he was actually very resistant to the sudden marriage. Even if he finally agreed, they knew that he was only doing it for Sharon's sake. Because by agreeing to all the plans made and all the conditions put forward by his parents, Sharon's life would be saved. So, with a huge bravery, he was desperate to create a secret scenario behind his forced consent. He really couldn't turn away and let his family hurt the girl just like that. To him, Sharon was his responsibility that he could never let go of. There were many things he had to make sure went on as it should, just as it was, without changing a bit even if he had to pay very dearly—marrying another girl.Just imagining how to explain all that to Sharon didn't sit well with him.Even to this day, after all
But Josh still didn't move. His eyes did seem to follow the direction where his father pointed to a folder with his chin. But as soon as he dropped his gaze on the inanimate object, his imagination and hopes about the future of his life with Sharon died. The sound of his father's cell phone broke the short silence between them. After checking the identity of the caller, his father's finger slid over the button and answered briefly. A “Hello” was followed by a few “Hm-hm” and finished with “Yeah, I'll be right there.”Josh watched his father's movements from the tail of his eyes in silence. With his mouth tightly shut and head still bowed, he stared at the folder that held the record of how his life story would end.The man who had almost the same facial lines as Josh glanced at the woman beside him for a signal. The woman, Josh's mother, nodded while flashing a faint smile.“Don't try to make trouble, or even spoil it,” the old man stood up as he straightened his suit, "We've already
After carefully watching Ashley's gestures, facial expressions, and the look in her eyes, Josh was finally able to translate what she meant. His mouth then automatically formed the letter ‘Aah’ as a response that he understood. Then, Josh tried to hold back and postpone everything he had planned before—looking for Ashley because he wanted to continue their conversation yesterday. Although it couldn't be denied that the intense turmoil in his head, in his chest, at the base of his tongue—all of them—wanted to be spewed out and resolved as soon as possible, just to alleviate the suffocating pressure caused by the pile of problems with the other party. Which had not been resolved at all, but rather grew, and grew. But no matter what, he still has to be able to control himself. In order not to be caught off guard by something that could harm him as it has in the past. He, also, had to be calm. That way, he would be able to see the big picture of the position at least, after the unknown wo
Josh woke up in a much better condition than before. As his consciousness rose to the surface, and his eyes peered open, he could feel the fatigue that had previously settled over his body had now vanished. Perhaps not entirely, but it was enough to make him feel lighter and more comfortable. He turned her head to the side—just because before going to bed he remembered Ashley was there—and found emptiness. The lighting in the room was also still the same as last night, the curtains were still closed, and it was so quiet. It certainly piqued her curiosity, about how long he had fallen into a deep sleep and what time it was.Slowly, he got up from the bed and sat himself on the edge. Then he swept his gaze across the room as he recalled where he had last placed his cell phone. After a few careful head turns, his eyes found the phone lying on the coffee table by the window.Josh then stood up and walked towards the location of his cell phone. Intending to check the time and if there were
There was no need to think too hard right now, because no matter how hard he tried, his thoughts kept spinning in the same endless vortex. There was no light at the end of the tunnel. Nor did there seem to be any easy way out. Everything was dark—as if he were trapped alone in a labyrinthine abyss, with no light, no clues, no hope of escape. The more he sped up his running, the more he amplified his screams, or the more desperate he was to find the exit... all he found was the deeper he got lost.Maybe he didn't need to solve everything right now. Maybe, tomorrow, he would find a miracle—something that he hadn't thought of yet.Josh decided to clean himself up after sitting there for a while.Still only half-aware of his actions, he wandered toward the master bedroom. It was pure instinct—a reflex from his body seeking the most natural place to rest. Even after Josh realized he was standing in front of the door, he didn't immediately turn around or back away. He didn’t panic. He just
Tonight Josh was forced to return to his own home. After his very intense conversation with his mother, it was clear that he didn't dare to go straight back to Sharon's apartment. In fact, he was unsure whether he should be determined to stay away from Sharon for a while, or whether he should be stubborn enough to meet her secretly as usual. Which of course came with consequences that were far worse than before. If he took the first option, compromised with Sharon and kept their distance—even though the girl would explode in anger and refuse to part with him without listening to any reason, as he had tried in the past—maybe he would be able to delay a little time to find a way to get back together with Sharon without having to worry about any sanctions. But if he took the second option, by continuing to prioritize Sharon and breaking his own promise—which he had even said with a face full of guilt less than an hour ago—then, he really had to be ready to accept a punishment that would
"Yes. Interesting, isn't it?"“That brother of yours seems really stupid, huh.”"He's just blind. That girl is very good at clouding his common sense. Sometimes I wonder what it is about that girl that makes Josh cling so tightly, as if he’s incapable of letting go—as if her presence is inescapable. Like it's impossible to let go of the shadow," Jason paused."That girl is like a leech, Mr. Lim. That's why your brother has a hard time letting go of her. Just like a person with a severe addiction, for him she acts as both a parasite and a source of opium."Jason was quite impressed by the former journalist's reasoning and judgment. He couldn't disagree against it—because what she said was so true. Her words were disturbingly accurate."You sound like an expert. No wonder you used to be such a great journalist.”“Used to be? What about now?” Jinah’s voice held a tinge of irritation."Of course you've become more skillful and professional. If you weren’t reliable, I wouldn't have reached
