Summer Vacation (Natalie)

It’s morning and I don’t remember anything that happened last night, so when my alarm goes off saying it’s 7am, I climb out of bed and head downstairs to the kitchen where the rest of my family should be. It’s a surprise when I enter the room and there’s no smell of toast or coffee which my mum has every morning before work. No smell of pancakes that my brother, Zac, cooks every morning before school. After I search the kitchen with no sign of any of them I go to their bedrooms and find them all still sound asleep. Is my clock wrong? I check mums nightstand and see that her clock reads the same as mine. Nope. Then it hits me, it’s the first day of summer vacation. Well that’s just great!

There’s nothing I can do now so I go back and lay down on my bed. As I waited I glanced over at the mirrors on my wardrobe. My golden mane of curls looked like a tumble weed on my head and while this hair usually framed my pale face nicely, made it look like I’d tossed and turned all night. My usual striking green eyes had large blue marks underneath like I hadn’t slept in a week. I didn’t realised I’d slept so badly. By the time I hear someone moving around it’s already 10 in the morning. As I walk into the kitchen I hear my dad put bread into the toaster,

“Morning dad, what are the plans for today other than sleeping in, which by the way I didn’t get told last night.” He looks up from the newspaper that he has just started reading and simply says

“Good morning Nat darling, did you sleep at all last night? Your eyes are very puffy and blue.”

“I thought I did, but judging from my appearance obviously not.” I make my way to the freezer to get some bread but just as I reach for the handle dad says,

“Sorry honey, I just put the last two pieces in. Would you mind heading to the store?”. “Ugh… seriously!” I sigh in exasperation. Just as I’m about to storm out of the room for my keys my mum turns up and stands in the doorway.

Mums name is Kylie she is short, rather pretty with her black mane and dark brown eyes that glow like headlights off a car and her petite nose and full lipped mouth with pristine white teeth that smile at me every morning. She waitresses at a small restaurant in the town.

Frostvale is a fairly small town in Serendell that sits between the Aurelian Spires, apparently “Aurelian” evokes gold or light, suggesting a golden grandeur of the mountains. Though to me the mountains just look creepy and dark. Frostvale has three high school and three primary schools plus a college for students who don’t want to leave the area. That’s were Zac goes to school. He is 19 and he is working on a lawyer’s degree, I don’t know why he even bothers, it sounds too hard. Zac is very smart and he looks the same as dad, literally, the very same, the only difference is that Zac is 6 foot 2 and very athletic like myself. He was the star basketball player at high school. The basketball coach said he could have got into the Australian basketball team. But he wanted to go to college and learn to be a lawyer.

Then you have my little sister Bethany who is 12, she is going into year 6 this year after summer vacation, which is good because that means she won’t be at my school for my last year. Bethany is short like mum, with black hair and brown eyes, but she has a small nose and the same mouth as dad. Which is weird because it shows I’m different compared to the rest of the family. When mum walks away from the door I make a run for it. I grab my car keys, which by the way have glitter drawings on them, thanks to Beth, my wallet and sunglasses off my desk. On the way back out I close my door and put a do not disturb sign on it. Then I’m bolting down the hallway again, trying to escape this household.

In the garage I pop the roller door up and hop in my very own Suzuki Swift. It’s the colour of the sea ever changing with the light of the day, going from green to blue to dark blue in just a few minutes. As I jump in the car and put the keys in the ignition I realise it’s low on fuel and it will need a refill before I even get close to the closest supermarket. So I start the car and slowly back out of the garage and down the driveway. The closest petrol station is about 3 kilometres away, but I’m fairly certain the car will make it that far. As I pull up to the red stoplight and I see something quite unusual, there is a bright red convertible Camaro, just beside me, I have never seen anything like it before in Frostvale. The driver winds down the window and looks directly into my eyes, knowing that I’ve been staring at his beautiful car. The first thing I notice about him is that he is extremely hot, with short black hair and dark brown eyes that show, that he has seen stuff that he shouldn’t have seen at such a young age. His full mouth and medium sized nose, the perfect shape for his face frame. I see his eyes drop to give me the usual once over look but when his eyes come back up they stop short and stare at my mouth, like he’s wondering what it would be like to kiss me, but just like that the moment is over and his eyes return to mine. He must be new here, but before I can say anything, the light flickers green and his car is off like a rocket leaving me, and my Swift, in his dust. I see him pull into the petrol station up ahead, I guess I still might have a chance to meet him properly after all. I begin to feel a slight fluttering in my stomach and sweat drip down the back of my neck as I pull up in front of the fuel pump.
