All I can think of is running, I can hear it coming behind me, giving chase like any predatory animal would do if they sensed easy prey. I know it’s catching me, the heavy footsteps following in my wake. I scan the wilderness looking for a way to escape this nightmare, but there’s nothing, no tree high enough, no branch long enough. My only hope is to keep running. Flashing back to seconds earlier, the look on my best friend’s face as the beast appeared from the shadows of the trees is all I can see. We were in the mountains camping for our summer vacation, enjoying our time away from school. When this summer ends, I will be going into senior year, getting ready for college and life ahead. Now everything has changed. Alexandria and I were just sitting on the logs that surround the flickering flames of the fire. We were roasting marshmallows and enjoying our freedom away from home. When it emerged. Alexandria saw it first.
At first it looked like a bear, but it was too big. Then it stepped out of the shadows allowing full view of its body. Its body a dark charcoal colour, with gigantic paws the size of small tyres. As it took a step forward, the claws that come out had to be at least 20cm long. Slowly I lifted my head to get a better look at its face, when suddenly it let out a blood curdling roar that blew Alexandria off her feet, and causes me to crumple to the ground. I looked up from my position and find that the beasts face represents a reptilian face, like the sort of thing teachers refer to as dinosaurs. Like the way they looked or would have looked like if they were still alive. Its darkness of its skin was like a night absent of the moon and stars, its eyes the only colour that can be seen on the hideous creature. The eyes were hypnotic. As the scarlet red eyes stare at me, I realise this is a creature I have never seen before. The amount of times I have come into the Aurelian Spires by myself searching for creatures like this I have never found one quite so frightening. This time I have no weapon, no way of protecting myself, let alone my friend. So I did the only thing I could do to protect her. I got up and ran. This is where I am now, running for my life hoping beyond hope that Alexandria packs up and leaves. Behind me I can hear her calling my name “Natalie, Nat can you hear me?” there’s a short pause before she says “I’m going for help, please be okay!” I continue running, I don’t know how long or how far I have ran, but I keep going. I can’t give up, not with my whole life ahead. Suddenly the moonlight guiding my path disappears and I am surrounded in darkness. With no knowledge of which way to go, I hit something hard and I black out. The next thing I know I wake up screaming in my bed, I shiver uncontrollably as the dried sweat makes my hair stick to my head. The sheets tangled at the foot of the bed, but my heart beat is already slowing because I’m at home safe and secure from any of those monsters out there in the woods. It was just a nightmare. In all the 17 years of my life, that would have to be the scariest nightmare I have ever had. I know I can’t go back to sleep after having a nightmare like that, so I get my phone out and check the time, its 2 in the morning I still have 5 hours until I have to get up. What am I going to do? I figure I could try calling Alexandria, she doesn’t like to sleep. So probably has a form of insomnia. After the first dial tone she picks up with a cheery “Good morning Nat, what’s happening?” I have no idea, how she can be wide-awake right now. She probably has her boyfriend over. His name is Aaron, the relationship name I have given them is the double As. In a nice voice I reply “Just had the scariest nightmare of my life. Why are you awake at 2 in the morning?” If I had of called anyone else, they would have ripped my head off for calling at such an ungodly hour. “Oh, you poor baby, its okay it was just a nightmare.” She purrs. There’s a short pause before she says “Aaron is over and we are watching horror movies, my parents are away for the week so they don’t know and Aaron’s parents think he’s at a friend’s house. Anyway must go, there is a movie waiting for me, and sleep waiting for you. Bye.” Well that was a bit abrupt, but I suppose it is 2 in the morning. “Okay, bye.” Then she hangs up and I’m left in my bedroom, alone. My eyes try to adjust to the darkness but my mind keeps thinking of the nightmare and I feel like something is watching me. I keep wondering if monsters like that are real, but I rule that out because it sounds so stupid. While I sit here in the darkness of my bedroom my heartbeat slows down and I am able to close my eyes without jumping at every noise I hear. I lay my head back against my soft feathery pillows and hope I will dream better dreams before morning or no dreams at all would be nice. As my breathing slows, my heart rate settles and my eyelids slowly droop as sleep draws be back into its embrace, the memory of the nightmare slowly disappears as well. It’s morning and I don’t remember anything that happened last night, so when my alarm goes off saying it’s 7am, I climb out of bed and head downstairs to the kitchen where the rest of my family should be. It’s a surprise when I enter the room and there’s no smell of toast or coffee which my mum has every morning before work. No smell of pancakes that my brother, Zac, cooks every morning before school. After I search the kitchen with no sign of any of them I go to their bedrooms and find them all still sound asleep. Is my clock wrong? I check mums nightstand and see that her clock reads the same as mine. Nope. Then it hits me, it’s the first day of summer vacation. Well that’s just great! There’s nothing I can do now so I go back and lay down on my bed. As I waited I glanced over at the mirrors on my wardrobe. My golden mane of curls looked like a tumble weed on my head and while this hair usually framed my pale face nicely, made it look like I’d tossed and turned all night. My usual s
Climbing out of the car I try not to stare at the “good looking man” at the pump across from me. As I’m trying not to look like a complete stalker while filling up the car I see a flash of movement out of the corner of my eye. Turning slowly I see a familiar car pulling in behind me. Oh no, Nick. Okay, I know what you probably thinking. “Natalie, you have a crush on Nick!” Well that’s not true! The truth is, I use to have a crush on him when I was younger, but I’m over that now. Even though he is still pretty hot, I am over it, I swear. Nick is 18, one year older than me. As Nick gets out of the car I make a run for the cash register. I know Nick will recognise my Swift out the front and realise I’m inside. He will most likely come looking for me because we haven’t seen each other for one year, but I don’t want to see him right now. As I pay for the petrol I step backwards and bump into someone. I turn around and look straight into the good looking man’s deep brown eyes. At first I’m
Slowly Ash climbs into the driver’s side of the vehicle and starts the car. At first there’s an awkward silence, because neither one of us knows the other. So Ash decides to start the conversation. “That was the best punch I have ever seen.’ At this point I’m too confused to reply because I have a billion thoughts going through my head, but he continues on without any comment from me anyway. “He didn’t even see it coming. I don’t think he was expecting you to punch him even though he was being a douche bag. At first I think he thought I was the one that punched him because he was looking at me and his eyes were screaming bloody murder. You were amazing, I didn’t think he would go so low to punch a girl, but I apparently was wrong about that too. I knew if he hit you that second time you would have got really injured so I jumped in front.” he concludes. This makes me lift my eyes to meet his. This stranger actually took a hit for me, a stranger I don’t even know, took a hit for me!
For a long while we just sit there in each other’s company, I look at the time and see that it’s all most 7pm. We’ve just been hanging in the car for more than 9 hours. My tummy grumbles and I realise I haven’t had any lunch let alone breakfast yet. “Would you like to come back to my place and finish this chat?” He agrees, as we begin to drive back Ash asks “Won’t it be weird with your family there?” I shake my head. Honestly my parents wouldn’t give a shit if I brought home a boy; they don’t even care about me to begin with. When we pull up at my house we see that the house is deserted, I simply pop the roller door and tell Ash to park on the far right because everyone in my family likes their own different spots and this one ended up being mine. As I give him the usual house tour he asks “Have you ever met someone you thought might be evil?” “No.” I say “but I have always wondered if the monsters in my dreams were real.” That makes him laugh, I’m not entirely sure why but I start
I pull the car to a stop and get out. It’s still smoky outside and it is quite hard to breath, at first I can’t see were the damage is, a few trees have been pulled out of the ground and some of them look like they have been sawn in half. I try to look at the houses more closely, but the smoke is too thick. House after house has gained a little lean to the left, leaning away from where it exploded. I can’t hear anyone moving around outside. Has everyone died? I don’t know what to think about it. As I continue walking to my house I see that none of our neighbours were home, well that’s suspicious. Slowly I come into view of my house, or where my house should have been. Nothing. Everything that I owned, everyone I love appears to be gone. I don’t believe my eyes. This can’t be happening. As I walk through the ash’s of what use to be my house I suddenly hear an ear splitting scream. Then there’s another one and another one, on the fourth scream I recognise who it’s coming from, it’s Beth
While we are eating breakfast, I get a text from Alexandria. The beeping scares the life out of me. When I comprehend that it’s my phone I run over to the kitchen bench and grab it. The text reads ‘Natalie are you okay? Please text me back as soon as you get this. We need to talk.’ Then in brackets it says ‘(If you are not dead – Please don’t be dead!)’ Quickly I type a message. ‘Yes, I’m alive but the rest of my family is gone. Don’t know what to do. Would you like to meet up somewhere?’ The reply comes less than a minute later. ‘I’m so sorry about your family. Yes, I would love to meet up. When and where?’ ‘I need new clothes and living supplies, plus I have $2,000 dollars to spend, so I call a shopping spree. Meet you at the mall in 20 minutes. Bring your boyfriend and I will introduce you to a new friend of mine, lots has happened and I need to see you.’ 5 seconds after I send it she replies ‘Yay shopping, okay meet you there at the front doors.’ I twist around to find Ash star
When we leave the mall, I head back to Ash’s place to put my new clothes away. Then I pack for the night at Alex’s, as I finish packing I head down to say goodbye to Ash. When I walk into the kitchen and don’t find him I begin to panic. I walk through the whole house but don’t find him, when I finally get to his bedroom I can hear shuffling around. I guess that he wants to be left alone so I walk towards the front door. After two steps I hear him call my name and his bedroom door opens, I turn around just in time to see him emerge from his dark bedroom. “I’m going to Alex’s now so I just come to say goodbye and goodnight.” “What do you mean goodbye?” He asks suddenly distressed “Only that I won’t see you for the rest of the day, so I was saying goodbye.” “Okay.’’ he replies a bit happier, glad that goodbye was not forever. Then he does something unexpected, he comes over and hugs me. He holds me tightly, not letting go, like if he lets go I would be gone forever. When he fina
I throw my arms around his neck, holding on because on the inside I feel like I’m missing something. We will probably have to research it but maybe I’m starting to fall for him or maybe it’s both and maybe he feels the same way as I do. I don’t know how long he holds me but I don’t let go either, when we finally release each other we are both smiling. I look down at the ground trying to hide the sadness in my eyes. How could it be that I just met this boy 2 days ago and I’m already falling for him? When we get inside, I tell him everything. I even tell him about the training I have signed us up for. I also tell him that Alex knows about me and that in during this week we will have to go to the library to research what we are. That night we sit in the lounge room, casually watching TV, when Ash says “I think we have a link, because when you were gone my body would pulse with electricity every time I thought about you.” “I felt the same thing, but it hurt the most when I arrived bac
We sit in silence for a few minutes while Cooper processes what I have shared with him. I’m secretly hoping that he has finished asking questions but I’m wrong. “What do the monsters do?” “That’s a hard one, monsters are the cause of human deaths and abductions.” Cooper sucks in a sharp breath, then releases “How can I help you?” “Well first off, we need to find Ash, he will be the only other person in these mountains and if that’s not true, we are in trouble.” Cooper nods several times then without further conversation stands up and walks outside. I lay there stunned at how quickly he believed me “Cooper?” I call out “Yes.” Is his reply, but it sounded very far away. “What are you doing?” “I am starting to pack away all the stuff outside so we can make a quick get away tomorrow. If you wouldn’t mind, could you start shoving all the stuff that is not in a bag, into a bag? That would be lovely. I will tell you more when I am finished out here.” As I go through all of
This time my sleep is plagued by nightmares and dreams alike. But I only remember one dream, that still plagues my mind when I wake up. I cry out from shock as I am pulled out of the nightmare. My whole body is trembling and I am covered in sweat, which has drenched my clothing making them stick to my body. The image still haunts me, Ash calling out my name, his hand reaching down to grab my hand as I fall. Then suddenly the dream freezes and words appear in the sky in blood red writing. ‘There coming’ then it flickers ‘were coming, be ready.’ Then suddenly I am falling again, than just before I hit the ground it blacks out. That’s when I woke up. I lie there as still as possible, too scared to move. What if the dream was real? What if it was a warning? This dream makes me more motivated to speed up my recovery and find Ash, my adrenaline speeds up and I begin to feel restless. I have to find Ash but I will need Cooper’s help, which means I will have to tell him all the things he do
Finding the bow and quiver had excited me and I wanted to get out here and find Ash and hope that he has also found his weapons so we can continue this war. I know I still have to relax my ankle and my back as well as my rib. So I will hopefully still be able to stay with Cooper for a day or two, the problem with that will be him asking questions, I can’t continue to lie to him, I have never been good with lies. I also fear growing to attach to him, which will cause a lot of problems as well. Sometimes I wish Cooper could see the monsters but I know he can’t. If he could that would mean he is the bad Ma Vista and he would have killed me while I was unconscious. So far this power I have is horrible and I could endanger a lot of people, especially the ones close to my heart, and I don’t want anything to happen to them. It’s an hour later and I smell something really good coming from outside, I also have not seen Cooper since the small incident that happened earlier; I hope he is no
I cry out as I open my eyes, and I find myself in my own tent, sweat covering my body. That was the scariest nightmare I have ever had. I sit up and look over and find Natalie still sound asleep. I have to get out of here and go hunting before I freak myself out even more. I grab my gear for hunting and head out towards my dad’s hunting trail that he made before he died. Walking along I set up several traps so I have a high chance of catching something for Natalie and myself to eat. So I stumble through the woods which are still filled with darkness from the night before which causes me to remember my dream. I couldn’t stab Natalie not unless something had over powered me. Plus Natalie was wearing the same cloths in the dream, to what she is wearing now. She is just so beautiful I couldn’t imagine hurting her; I even hate seeing her in pain. As I walk back towards my camp and Natalie, I check the traps and what I find is a young deer. This is going to be great breakfast, I grab
“Natalie?” I say, trying to talk to her. “Yes, I was just thinking.” She says randomly, I chuckle at how stupid she just sounded. She roles over and winces from what I believe is pain. “We need to do something about your injuries are you comfortable enough with me to let me do it.” I ask she looks me in the eye and nods. As I check over her body I notice that she has a sprained ankle or twisted ankle and might also have a broken rib. She also has several bruises adorning her body, especially over her back. She ask me what time it was that I found her, but I have no idea what time that was because I didn’t have a watch so I just make it up. Her face seems to pale from the information I give her; I wonder how long she had been lying there before I had found her. “When I found you at the bottom of the hill, my first thought was that you were dead. Then I noticed that you were breathing, so I calmed down a bit then I started wondering what you were doing in the mountains, that
I was on my yearly hunt, but normally I would be with my family, except they died a few weeks ago. I don’t know what or how it happened I had just come home and they were all lying on the floor with pools of blood surrounding them. At first I had thought someone had murdered them but now I am not so sure. As I walk along a path my dad had made when we first started hunting, I find a rabbit trail that looks really fresh. I follow it through the woods until I see something that makes my insides freeze. There only three meters away from me lying on her back is a girl, her arms and legs going in many different angles. Slowly I walk towards the body, unsure whether she is alive or dead. As I get closer I am relieved to see a small rise and fall of the girls chest. What the hell is she doing here alone? When I am standing above her I look down at the girls face and I am struck with a strange emotion I have never felt before. But the girl lying before me is gorgeous; I have never seen any
As it gets later and I still am unable to stand, Cooper asks me if I would prefer to stay with him or if I wanted to leave. “Staying with you is probably safer then going out there into the wild when I can hardly walk.” He nods his head in agreement. I glance up for the first time and actually look at him. He has bright orange hair, greyish-blue eyes and a small amount of freckles that dash across his cheeks, his hair is cut short like Ash’s but his fringe is shorter. He is lean and muscular, I should have figured that out when he said he carried me for three hours. He looks very athletic and is pretty attractive, he also has a nice personality and is very caring, and I immediately take a liking to him. Before we go to sleep Cooper moves the sleeping bag so I have my own room, he then puts all his luggage in the middle and makes himself a bed on the other side. Before I go to sleep I have to ask “Cooper?” “Yes.” he mumbles. “Why are you in the mountains?” “I came up here e
I wake up to find that I am in someone’s arms, at first I think that Ash has found me, but I can tell by his deodorant that, that’s not the case. My body aches all over; it feels like I have broken every bone in my body. But at least I feel secure in who ever these arms belong too. So I drift back to sleep trying to get rid of the throbbing headache that now plagues me. When I wake up again, I am still in the stranger’s arms and he is still walking steadily, I feel slightly better this time. With only a small headache but my whole body is still on fire. And it flares up every time this guy takes a step. After what feels like an hour we arrive at a small clearing, in the clearing is a small tent, not much different from Ash’s and mine. He must sense that I am awake because he starts talking to me. “Hi, you’re lucky I found you, a few hours longer and you would have died.” His voice is smooth and light it almost most makes me go back to sleep. “You know, you could actually say
Once out in the fresh air, I take a deep breath and zone in on all my 5 senses, I feel the warm breeze blowing my hair back from my face, smell the freshness of nature, taste the small mint that is still left in my mouth, I hear all the birds singing in the trees, all the crickets making buzzing noises in the grass surrounding me, all the larger animals running around and snapping leaves and small branches with there feet and of course the leaves rustling over head, due to the wind. I see hundreds of tree trunks, grass covered with leaves and small branches that have fallen from the trees. It is also very gloomy because it is still quite early in the morning and the sunlight rains down in patches landing in certain spots. As I daydream Ash walks up behind me and puts one of his hands on my shoulder. Snapping me back to reality. “Let’s get moving, do we have everything we need?” I run off a checklist “Sword, Shield, Bow, Quiver, Knives, water and food, including fruit and Vegetables
