For a long while we just sit there in each other’s company, I look at the time and see that it’s all most 7pm. We’ve just been hanging in the car for more than 9 hours. My tummy grumbles and I realise I haven’t had any lunch let alone breakfast yet.
“Would you like to come back to my place and finish this chat?” He agrees, as we begin to drive back Ash asks “Won’t it be weird with your family there?” I shake my head. Honestly my parents wouldn’t give a shit if I brought home a boy; they don’t even care about me to begin with. When we pull up at my house we see that the house is deserted, I simply pop the roller door and tell Ash to park on the far right because everyone in my family likes their own different spots and this one ended up being mine. As I give him the usual house tour he asks “Have you ever met someone you thought might be evil?” “No.” I say “but I have always wondered if the monsters in my dreams were real.” That makes him laugh, I’m not entirely sure why but I start laughing as well. Really it sounds so stupid saying that monsters are real, what else am I meant to do. Suddenly we were up to my room and I’m unsure of how to let him in. I have never had a boy in my room, so it’s a totally foreign experience. I choose to just open the door and walk in saying “and this is my room, where I have lived my whole life.” Ash looks around nodding slowly, approving of my choice in colour and material. I sit down on my bed and wait for him to take a seat somewhere, in the end in he sits beside me on the bed. When were settled I ask, “Do you want to start or do you want to know something about me first?” To think we had only just meet 9 hours ago, had a fight, both of us punching Nick and stuffing him into his own car. Then have a 8-hour conversation in the car without lunch; I believe we have taken this knowledge very well indeed. Ash looks at me curiously then decides to answer, “I will start because, well, I already have started. Then you can tell me everything about you.” “Okay.” I nod. “I will start where I left off. On my 16th birthday my parents arranged a get together with my friends at a water park we lived near. At first I didn’t want to go, but I quickly changed my mind when I heard that my best friend from Elderwood would be coming. My parents dropped me off saying ‘if you need anything or when it was over just walk back home’ because it was only down the road. I nodded, because I was excited, I quickly said goodbye and see you later and entered the water park. When the party was over I started walking home wondering if they will have any presents for me when I get there. I’m about half way when I see the smoke, I start to run as fast as I can hoping that it’s not my house on fire and if it is that my family is outside. As I turn up in the driveway I see that the fire isn’t that bad, as I barge through the front door I can tell that something is wrong, no one is waiting for me. Swiftly I enter the hallway and creep along until I get to the kitchen and that is when I find the monster. The monster looks like one of the monsters from my nightmares. I look around for my family but I don’t find my mum or my sister but I find my dad, Luke, dead, lying on the floor in a pool of blood at the monsters feet. I freak out calling mum’s name ‘Jamie, Jamie’ hoping she was looking after my little sister, Chloe. I try to beat the monster to the lounge room but I’m too slow and it gets there first. I hear mum yell out ‘Not the baby.’ Because Chloe was only 9 months of age, before I hear a terrible tearing noise. I peer around from the kitchen door to see my mum in shreds on the ground and I look up just in time to see my baby sister get swallowed whole by this gigantic monster with its bright orange body that looks like its on fire. Slowly it turns around and stares me right in the eye, than it does something I will never forget. It talks! It rumbles something like ‘you are the first Ma vista that has been born this century. I have killed more people than you would like to know but this is your only warning. If you dare come looking for me or my fellow Ma vista master I will kill you before you even know what’s happening.’ Then he vanished into thin air, leaving me alone with my dead family and the house on fire. That was when I knew I had to leave, in case anyone else got hurt, so I grabbed whatever I wanted and grabbed the car. I had gotten my L’s that morning. I drove across the country side looking for a clue of where the evil Ma vista might be, never hoping that I would find the other Ma vista on the way.” As he finishes I’m speechless what a horrible thing to go through at such a young age. I don’t know what to say. I grab him and pull him down on bed, then I snuggle up to him. “I’m so sorry, Ash.” “It was horrible! I don’t think you and I are ready to take on some of those monsters, the one I saw that night was so strong and so powerful. I don’t think anything could have stopped it.” Just as he finishes that sentence, noise comes from outside making me jump, which causes Ash to crack up in a fit of laughter. “Natalie, were back. When you want dinner come out and get it!” Mum yells from the kitchen. I glance up at Ash’s handsome face, “Do you want to hear about my life now.” “Yeah” He replies. So I begin my short, less sad story of my life. “I was born here at the Frostvale hospital on the 19th of October 1997. I have lived in this house my whole life. The nightmares only started about 1 year ago and the only person who knows about them other than you is Alexandria.” I tell him “and that is pretty much my life in a nut shell. Though today I did punch my old crush in the nose and then stuffed him into a car.” I finish that exasperated, while Ash just starts laughing at me and my dramatic finished. I asked if he would like to get something to eat or drink but he just says he should be getting home. I drive him back to the petrol station where surprisingly, his red convertible Camaro is still parked. Lucky Frostvale isn’t known for robbery. As I drop him off and exchange numbers we say goodbye and drive towards our houses. On the way I think to myself, what Ash has been through must have been horrible and I hope that he is okay now that he shared his story with me. Then just as I turn onto my street there’s a massive explosion, my car rocks back from the force and for a while I can’t hear anything other than the ringing in my ears or see anything from the smoke.I pull the car to a stop and get out. It’s still smoky outside and it is quite hard to breath, at first I can’t see were the damage is, a few trees have been pulled out of the ground and some of them look like they have been sawn in half. I try to look at the houses more closely, but the smoke is too thick. House after house has gained a little lean to the left, leaning away from where it exploded. I can’t hear anyone moving around outside. Has everyone died? I don’t know what to think about it. As I continue walking to my house I see that none of our neighbours were home, well that’s suspicious. Slowly I come into view of my house, or where my house should have been. Nothing. Everything that I owned, everyone I love appears to be gone. I don’t believe my eyes. This can’t be happening. As I walk through the ash’s of what use to be my house I suddenly hear an ear splitting scream. Then there’s another one and another one, on the fourth scream I recognise who it’s coming from, it’s Beth
While we are eating breakfast, I get a text from Alexandria. The beeping scares the life out of me. When I comprehend that it’s my phone I run over to the kitchen bench and grab it. The text reads ‘Natalie are you okay? Please text me back as soon as you get this. We need to talk.’ Then in brackets it says ‘(If you are not dead – Please don’t be dead!)’ Quickly I type a message. ‘Yes, I’m alive but the rest of my family is gone. Don’t know what to do. Would you like to meet up somewhere?’ The reply comes less than a minute later. ‘I’m so sorry about your family. Yes, I would love to meet up. When and where?’ ‘I need new clothes and living supplies, plus I have $2,000 dollars to spend, so I call a shopping spree. Meet you at the mall in 20 minutes. Bring your boyfriend and I will introduce you to a new friend of mine, lots has happened and I need to see you.’ 5 seconds after I send it she replies ‘Yay shopping, okay meet you there at the front doors.’ I twist around to find Ash star
When we leave the mall, I head back to Ash’s place to put my new clothes away. Then I pack for the night at Alex’s, as I finish packing I head down to say goodbye to Ash. When I walk into the kitchen and don’t find him I begin to panic. I walk through the whole house but don’t find him, when I finally get to his bedroom I can hear shuffling around. I guess that he wants to be left alone so I walk towards the front door. After two steps I hear him call my name and his bedroom door opens, I turn around just in time to see him emerge from his dark bedroom. “I’m going to Alex’s now so I just come to say goodbye and goodnight.” “What do you mean goodbye?” He asks suddenly distressed “Only that I won’t see you for the rest of the day, so I was saying goodbye.” “Okay.’’ he replies a bit happier, glad that goodbye was not forever. Then he does something unexpected, he comes over and hugs me. He holds me tightly, not letting go, like if he lets go I would be gone forever. When he fina
I throw my arms around his neck, holding on because on the inside I feel like I’m missing something. We will probably have to research it but maybe I’m starting to fall for him or maybe it’s both and maybe he feels the same way as I do. I don’t know how long he holds me but I don’t let go either, when we finally release each other we are both smiling. I look down at the ground trying to hide the sadness in my eyes. How could it be that I just met this boy 2 days ago and I’m already falling for him? When we get inside, I tell him everything. I even tell him about the training I have signed us up for. I also tell him that Alex knows about me and that in during this week we will have to go to the library to research what we are. That night we sit in the lounge room, casually watching TV, when Ash says “I think we have a link, because when you were gone my body would pulse with electricity every time I thought about you.” “I felt the same thing, but it hurt the most when I arrived bac
When we leave the car is in complete silence. It takes us half an hour to get to the library, so the silence lasts that long. Sometimes I would mumble the words to a song on the radio, Ash would sometimes as well. When we get there he only says, “We need a computer and access to informative books.” We choose to work separately because of what happened this morning, I start with the computer and Ash starts with the books. I log in and start searching. I search the word “Ma Vista” and a whole heap of websites come up. I search through some of them but after an hour I start to get restless, it isn’t until I find the website ‘What are Ma Vista’s and what do they do?’ that I get excited. I click on it and read the first paragraph; it has what Alex said to me two days ago. As I continue to read I come across new information, so I call out to Ash. He comes flying through the door, closes it softly and we start to read. ‘A Ma Vista also known in English as “with sight” is a creatures o
My day of freedom ends up being used to stay in bed all day and that night, Ash sleeps in my bed again. This morning when we woke up, we got out of bed straight away because today is “learn to defend yourself and kill your enemy” day. I am extremely nervous about this training thing but it needs to be done. When I am getting dressed I go through a drawer of cloths and pick out a black long sleeve shirt and black tights, then I grab a pair of Alex’s shoes and a pair of socks. When I finish getting dressed I head to the bathroom and wash my face then I pull my hair up into a tight ponytail so it won’t get in the way. When I am finished I meet Ash out the front with the cars. We choose to take his car because it’s better for long distance travel. It takes us two hours to get to this place, which is in the woods and hardly has anyone there so at least we won’t be embarrassed. There seems to be a couple of workers moving about outside the front of the camp. A couple of them introduce the
Walking into the little cafeteria, lunch smells amazing and my grumbling tummy agrees. Ash and I both get servings of salad, potato bake, pasta salad and some meat, which include chicken, sausages and ham. I eat lunch at a leisurely pace not wanting the time to end, but it does and we are moving quickly back to the training compound. Riley said we would be doing more of the basic hand-to-hand combat but he never said we would be using boxing bags. My knuckles are going to be raw after today. He demonstrates how to punch the bag because it movies when you hit it. Finally we are allowed to hit the bags, and they are heavier than they look. While Riley is talking to Ash I try to kick it but I completely miss I steal a glance at them to see if they notice but I don’t think they did. When Riley starts to watch me I see a sense of approval in his facial expressions. I must be doing something right, so I decide to test my luck and try to kick it again but my foot doesn’t want to kick the b
When I wake up in the morning, Ash must have come into my room and just joined me during the night because he’s lying on his back with his arm around me, while my head rest against his chest, my body curled up against his body. He must feel my body tense because when I go to move he says “Good morning Nat is your body sore from yesterday?” “I don’t know Ash, because you won’t let me move.” Slowly he lifts his arm and lets me escape but as soon as I move my legs I cry out in pain, oh the agony. It shots up through my legs and down my spine, my arms are also sore. And my knuckles are bloody from the punching bag. I’m in agony; I collapse to the group and lay there in a ball until the pain starts to pass. Then as I go to move and get myself a paracetamol Ash appears at my side with it and a glass of water. Through the rest of the morning I slowly walk around getting ready, for another horrible day of exercise. When we get to Riley, he says we will be doing knife throwing. We follow
We sit in silence for a few minutes while Cooper processes what I have shared with him. I’m secretly hoping that he has finished asking questions but I’m wrong. “What do the monsters do?” “That’s a hard one, monsters are the cause of human deaths and abductions.” Cooper sucks in a sharp breath, then releases “How can I help you?” “Well first off, we need to find Ash, he will be the only other person in these mountains and if that’s not true, we are in trouble.” Cooper nods several times then without further conversation stands up and walks outside. I lay there stunned at how quickly he believed me “Cooper?” I call out “Yes.” Is his reply, but it sounded very far away. “What are you doing?” “I am starting to pack away all the stuff outside so we can make a quick get away tomorrow. If you wouldn’t mind, could you start shoving all the stuff that is not in a bag, into a bag? That would be lovely. I will tell you more when I am finished out here.” As I go through all of
This time my sleep is plagued by nightmares and dreams alike. But I only remember one dream, that still plagues my mind when I wake up. I cry out from shock as I am pulled out of the nightmare. My whole body is trembling and I am covered in sweat, which has drenched my clothing making them stick to my body. The image still haunts me, Ash calling out my name, his hand reaching down to grab my hand as I fall. Then suddenly the dream freezes and words appear in the sky in blood red writing. ‘There coming’ then it flickers ‘were coming, be ready.’ Then suddenly I am falling again, than just before I hit the ground it blacks out. That’s when I woke up. I lie there as still as possible, too scared to move. What if the dream was real? What if it was a warning? This dream makes me more motivated to speed up my recovery and find Ash, my adrenaline speeds up and I begin to feel restless. I have to find Ash but I will need Cooper’s help, which means I will have to tell him all the things he do
Finding the bow and quiver had excited me and I wanted to get out here and find Ash and hope that he has also found his weapons so we can continue this war. I know I still have to relax my ankle and my back as well as my rib. So I will hopefully still be able to stay with Cooper for a day or two, the problem with that will be him asking questions, I can’t continue to lie to him, I have never been good with lies. I also fear growing to attach to him, which will cause a lot of problems as well. Sometimes I wish Cooper could see the monsters but I know he can’t. If he could that would mean he is the bad Ma Vista and he would have killed me while I was unconscious. So far this power I have is horrible and I could endanger a lot of people, especially the ones close to my heart, and I don’t want anything to happen to them. It’s an hour later and I smell something really good coming from outside, I also have not seen Cooper since the small incident that happened earlier; I hope he is no
I cry out as I open my eyes, and I find myself in my own tent, sweat covering my body. That was the scariest nightmare I have ever had. I sit up and look over and find Natalie still sound asleep. I have to get out of here and go hunting before I freak myself out even more. I grab my gear for hunting and head out towards my dad’s hunting trail that he made before he died. Walking along I set up several traps so I have a high chance of catching something for Natalie and myself to eat. So I stumble through the woods which are still filled with darkness from the night before which causes me to remember my dream. I couldn’t stab Natalie not unless something had over powered me. Plus Natalie was wearing the same cloths in the dream, to what she is wearing now. She is just so beautiful I couldn’t imagine hurting her; I even hate seeing her in pain. As I walk back towards my camp and Natalie, I check the traps and what I find is a young deer. This is going to be great breakfast, I grab
“Natalie?” I say, trying to talk to her. “Yes, I was just thinking.” She says randomly, I chuckle at how stupid she just sounded. She roles over and winces from what I believe is pain. “We need to do something about your injuries are you comfortable enough with me to let me do it.” I ask she looks me in the eye and nods. As I check over her body I notice that she has a sprained ankle or twisted ankle and might also have a broken rib. She also has several bruises adorning her body, especially over her back. She ask me what time it was that I found her, but I have no idea what time that was because I didn’t have a watch so I just make it up. Her face seems to pale from the information I give her; I wonder how long she had been lying there before I had found her. “When I found you at the bottom of the hill, my first thought was that you were dead. Then I noticed that you were breathing, so I calmed down a bit then I started wondering what you were doing in the mountains, that
I was on my yearly hunt, but normally I would be with my family, except they died a few weeks ago. I don’t know what or how it happened I had just come home and they were all lying on the floor with pools of blood surrounding them. At first I had thought someone had murdered them but now I am not so sure. As I walk along a path my dad had made when we first started hunting, I find a rabbit trail that looks really fresh. I follow it through the woods until I see something that makes my insides freeze. There only three meters away from me lying on her back is a girl, her arms and legs going in many different angles. Slowly I walk towards the body, unsure whether she is alive or dead. As I get closer I am relieved to see a small rise and fall of the girls chest. What the hell is she doing here alone? When I am standing above her I look down at the girls face and I am struck with a strange emotion I have never felt before. But the girl lying before me is gorgeous; I have never seen any
As it gets later and I still am unable to stand, Cooper asks me if I would prefer to stay with him or if I wanted to leave. “Staying with you is probably safer then going out there into the wild when I can hardly walk.” He nods his head in agreement. I glance up for the first time and actually look at him. He has bright orange hair, greyish-blue eyes and a small amount of freckles that dash across his cheeks, his hair is cut short like Ash’s but his fringe is shorter. He is lean and muscular, I should have figured that out when he said he carried me for three hours. He looks very athletic and is pretty attractive, he also has a nice personality and is very caring, and I immediately take a liking to him. Before we go to sleep Cooper moves the sleeping bag so I have my own room, he then puts all his luggage in the middle and makes himself a bed on the other side. Before I go to sleep I have to ask “Cooper?” “Yes.” he mumbles. “Why are you in the mountains?” “I came up here e
I wake up to find that I am in someone’s arms, at first I think that Ash has found me, but I can tell by his deodorant that, that’s not the case. My body aches all over; it feels like I have broken every bone in my body. But at least I feel secure in who ever these arms belong too. So I drift back to sleep trying to get rid of the throbbing headache that now plagues me. When I wake up again, I am still in the stranger’s arms and he is still walking steadily, I feel slightly better this time. With only a small headache but my whole body is still on fire. And it flares up every time this guy takes a step. After what feels like an hour we arrive at a small clearing, in the clearing is a small tent, not much different from Ash’s and mine. He must sense that I am awake because he starts talking to me. “Hi, you’re lucky I found you, a few hours longer and you would have died.” His voice is smooth and light it almost most makes me go back to sleep. “You know, you could actually say
Once out in the fresh air, I take a deep breath and zone in on all my 5 senses, I feel the warm breeze blowing my hair back from my face, smell the freshness of nature, taste the small mint that is still left in my mouth, I hear all the birds singing in the trees, all the crickets making buzzing noises in the grass surrounding me, all the larger animals running around and snapping leaves and small branches with there feet and of course the leaves rustling over head, due to the wind. I see hundreds of tree trunks, grass covered with leaves and small branches that have fallen from the trees. It is also very gloomy because it is still quite early in the morning and the sunlight rains down in patches landing in certain spots. As I daydream Ash walks up behind me and puts one of his hands on my shoulder. Snapping me back to reality. “Let’s get moving, do we have everything we need?” I run off a checklist “Sword, Shield, Bow, Quiver, Knives, water and food, including fruit and Vegetables
