Climbing out of the car I try not to stare at the “good looking man” at the pump across from me. As I’m trying not to look like a complete stalker while filling up the car I see a flash of movement out of the corner of my eye. Turning slowly I see a familiar car pulling in behind me. Oh no, Nick.
Okay, I know what you probably thinking. “Natalie, you have a crush on Nick!” Well that’s not true! The truth is, I use to have a crush on him when I was younger, but I’m over that now. Even though he is still pretty hot, I am over it, I swear. Nick is 18, one year older than me. As Nick gets out of the car I make a run for the cash register. I know Nick will recognise my Swift out the front and realise I’m inside. He will most likely come looking for me because we haven’t seen each other for one year, but I don’t want to see him right now. As I pay for the petrol I step backwards and bump into someone. I turn around and look straight into the good looking man’s deep brown eyes. At first I’m taken aback at how beautiful they are, but then I realise I’m staring so I take a step back and look at the floor embarrassed. He asks for my name, “Natalie, what’s yours?” He looks at me for a while before replying “The names Ash.” in a soft as velvet voice. Instantly I’m mesmerised by his voice, how could someone so masculine have such a soft voice. Then before I can move he grabs my waist, picks me up and turns around depositing me behind him. Then he just walks up to the register and pays. I’m lost in a sense of confusion, what just happened? But I don’t get time to think about it because a different figure appears in my peripheral vision. Before I can react Nick grabs me and pulls me into a big bear hug. As Nick hugs me he whispers into my ear “Hello Nat.” there’s a short pause before he says “Long time no see.” in a seductive purr. Finally he releases his grip on me and I jump out of his reach before he can grab me again. “Hello Nick.” I reply shortly and try to make a break for my car. Nicks got quick reflexes though and he quickly grabs my arm in a powerful but soft hold, making sure he won’t hurt me. “What’s the rush, Nat?” he asks. Honestly the rush is if I stay here I’m scared about what I will say and do in his presence! So I simply mumble, “Going to see Alex.” and walk away. Well that’s just great now he knows where I’m going, that’s nearly as bad as giving him my home address. While I’m brooding over these thoughts I don’t notice Ash sitting on the bonnet of my car. “How dare you sit on my Swifts bonnet, do you know I had to work my butt off to pay for that. Do you? No you don’t! So get off right NOW!” Ash slowly gets off the bonnet and steps into my personal space “Why sweetheart, has a boy never waited for you to come out of a petrol station?.” Well how dare a stranger have the nerve to say that to me, right in my face? I lift my head up and look him in the eye “The boys that do wait for me, don’t lean on my car, because they have manners, unlike you.” After that comment the look I get is priceless. His mouth forms a slight frown in the corners and his eyes widen in shock. Ha! Take that handsome stranger with bad manners! He opens his mouth to say something when Nick appears again, great just what I need right now. Nick looks at me, then at Ash. A strange emotion flashes through his eyes. He continues to stare at Ash and says “You know, any boy who is going out with Nat, never sits on her car. So I’m guessing you’re a new one.” During the short pause Ash’s eyes flick to me in a moment of confusion before he realises what Nick means, meanwhile Nick is still rambling on “But I guess you wouldn’t know that either because Natalie’s only ever had one boyfriend before. Isn’t that right Nat?” he looks at me innocently like he didn’t mean the offence but I can see straight through him, he’s being a douche bag, a very big one too. So this is my choice, I can go along with what he is saying or punch him in the face. Which option should I take? That is the question. To make my decision for me Nick says “Come on Nat, tell him the truth.” Well that confirms it, he’s being a gigantic douchebag so I choose the latter one. Before he even knows what’s coming I punch him right in the nose! After that everything goes crazy, Nick falls to the ground holding his nose screaming. I stare at my hand in amazement because I have always wanted to punch someone, but I never thought I would get the chance. Ash stares at me with a mixture of amusement and awe. With the adrenaline pulsing through me, I don’t realise that Nick is rising to his feet and before I can defend myself Nick punches me on the check. Geez this guy is an asshole. I can’t believe I had a crush on him. This punch hurts, the pain shoots through my face causing me to close my eyes and when I reopen them slightly, it is just in time to see Nick pulling back to hit me again. As Nick brings his fist forward aiming to hit me in the throat, Ash jumps in front of me, taking the hit in the back. He quickly pivots around and Nick doesn’t even see the fist coming until it’s too late. It connects with Nicks jaw and he is instantly knocked out. Slowly as the stars leave my eyesight I am able to see the damage that’s been done. Nick is still on the ground unconscious and Ash is just standing there staring at me. I know we have to leave before Nick wakes up because he will just continue to fight us because of his arrogant ego. I grab him under the armpits, which by the way smell really bad. I half carry, half drag Nick to his BMW, that’s when Ash notices what I’m doing, so he comes over and helps me stuff Nick into his own car. Surprisingly it doesn’t take too long to put Nick into the car, what actually takes the longest is finding his keys, which are shoved in the back pocket of his jeans. After getting Nick inside, we close the door locking it and pushing the keys through the slight opening we left in the window so he could breath. Ash slowly walks towards me and attentively reaches out a hand softly brushing the bruise that’s already appearing on my left cheek. At the physical contact I flinch, thinking he too is going to punch me, but that doesn’t happen. As I take a step towards my car a wave of dizziness takes over and I sway slightly, before reaching out and grabbing Ash’s forearm. Ash reaches out and grabs me by the waist before whispering in my ear, “Here, let me help you to your car.” Gratefully I nod my head. Gently as though I am something fragile he lifts me up and puts me in the passenger seat of my car. In a calm voice he asks “Can I please have the keys?” at this point I can’t think of any other way to get away from this place so I mumble something sounding like yes and hand over the keys.Slowly Ash climbs into the driver’s side of the vehicle and starts the car. At first there’s an awkward silence, because neither one of us knows the other. So Ash decides to start the conversation. “That was the best punch I have ever seen.’ At this point I’m too confused to reply because I have a billion thoughts going through my head, but he continues on without any comment from me anyway. “He didn’t even see it coming. I don’t think he was expecting you to punch him even though he was being a douche bag. At first I think he thought I was the one that punched him because he was looking at me and his eyes were screaming bloody murder. You were amazing, I didn’t think he would go so low to punch a girl, but I apparently was wrong about that too. I knew if he hit you that second time you would have got really injured so I jumped in front.” he concludes. This makes me lift my eyes to meet his. This stranger actually took a hit for me, a stranger I don’t even know, took a hit for me!
For a long while we just sit there in each other’s company, I look at the time and see that it’s all most 7pm. We’ve just been hanging in the car for more than 9 hours. My tummy grumbles and I realise I haven’t had any lunch let alone breakfast yet. “Would you like to come back to my place and finish this chat?” He agrees, as we begin to drive back Ash asks “Won’t it be weird with your family there?” I shake my head. Honestly my parents wouldn’t give a shit if I brought home a boy; they don’t even care about me to begin with. When we pull up at my house we see that the house is deserted, I simply pop the roller door and tell Ash to park on the far right because everyone in my family likes their own different spots and this one ended up being mine. As I give him the usual house tour he asks “Have you ever met someone you thought might be evil?” “No.” I say “but I have always wondered if the monsters in my dreams were real.” That makes him laugh, I’m not entirely sure why but I start
I pull the car to a stop and get out. It’s still smoky outside and it is quite hard to breath, at first I can’t see were the damage is, a few trees have been pulled out of the ground and some of them look like they have been sawn in half. I try to look at the houses more closely, but the smoke is too thick. House after house has gained a little lean to the left, leaning away from where it exploded. I can’t hear anyone moving around outside. Has everyone died? I don’t know what to think about it. As I continue walking to my house I see that none of our neighbours were home, well that’s suspicious. Slowly I come into view of my house, or where my house should have been. Nothing. Everything that I owned, everyone I love appears to be gone. I don’t believe my eyes. This can’t be happening. As I walk through the ash’s of what use to be my house I suddenly hear an ear splitting scream. Then there’s another one and another one, on the fourth scream I recognise who it’s coming from, it’s Beth
While we are eating breakfast, I get a text from Alexandria. The beeping scares the life out of me. When I comprehend that it’s my phone I run over to the kitchen bench and grab it. The text reads ‘Natalie are you okay? Please text me back as soon as you get this. We need to talk.’ Then in brackets it says ‘(If you are not dead – Please don’t be dead!)’ Quickly I type a message. ‘Yes, I’m alive but the rest of my family is gone. Don’t know what to do. Would you like to meet up somewhere?’ The reply comes less than a minute later. ‘I’m so sorry about your family. Yes, I would love to meet up. When and where?’ ‘I need new clothes and living supplies, plus I have $2,000 dollars to spend, so I call a shopping spree. Meet you at the mall in 20 minutes. Bring your boyfriend and I will introduce you to a new friend of mine, lots has happened and I need to see you.’ 5 seconds after I send it she replies ‘Yay shopping, okay meet you there at the front doors.’ I twist around to find Ash star
When we leave the mall, I head back to Ash’s place to put my new clothes away. Then I pack for the night at Alex’s, as I finish packing I head down to say goodbye to Ash. When I walk into the kitchen and don’t find him I begin to panic. I walk through the whole house but don’t find him, when I finally get to his bedroom I can hear shuffling around. I guess that he wants to be left alone so I walk towards the front door. After two steps I hear him call my name and his bedroom door opens, I turn around just in time to see him emerge from his dark bedroom. “I’m going to Alex’s now so I just come to say goodbye and goodnight.” “What do you mean goodbye?” He asks suddenly distressed “Only that I won’t see you for the rest of the day, so I was saying goodbye.” “Okay.’’ he replies a bit happier, glad that goodbye was not forever. Then he does something unexpected, he comes over and hugs me. He holds me tightly, not letting go, like if he lets go I would be gone forever. When he fina
I throw my arms around his neck, holding on because on the inside I feel like I’m missing something. We will probably have to research it but maybe I’m starting to fall for him or maybe it’s both and maybe he feels the same way as I do. I don’t know how long he holds me but I don’t let go either, when we finally release each other we are both smiling. I look down at the ground trying to hide the sadness in my eyes. How could it be that I just met this boy 2 days ago and I’m already falling for him? When we get inside, I tell him everything. I even tell him about the training I have signed us up for. I also tell him that Alex knows about me and that in during this week we will have to go to the library to research what we are. That night we sit in the lounge room, casually watching TV, when Ash says “I think we have a link, because when you were gone my body would pulse with electricity every time I thought about you.” “I felt the same thing, but it hurt the most when I arrived bac
When we leave the car is in complete silence. It takes us half an hour to get to the library, so the silence lasts that long. Sometimes I would mumble the words to a song on the radio, Ash would sometimes as well. When we get there he only says, “We need a computer and access to informative books.” We choose to work separately because of what happened this morning, I start with the computer and Ash starts with the books. I log in and start searching. I search the word “Ma Vista” and a whole heap of websites come up. I search through some of them but after an hour I start to get restless, it isn’t until I find the website ‘What are Ma Vista’s and what do they do?’ that I get excited. I click on it and read the first paragraph; it has what Alex said to me two days ago. As I continue to read I come across new information, so I call out to Ash. He comes flying through the door, closes it softly and we start to read. ‘A Ma Vista also known in English as “with sight” is a creatures o
My day of freedom ends up being used to stay in bed all day and that night, Ash sleeps in my bed again. This morning when we woke up, we got out of bed straight away because today is “learn to defend yourself and kill your enemy” day. I am extremely nervous about this training thing but it needs to be done. When I am getting dressed I go through a drawer of cloths and pick out a black long sleeve shirt and black tights, then I grab a pair of Alex’s shoes and a pair of socks. When I finish getting dressed I head to the bathroom and wash my face then I pull my hair up into a tight ponytail so it won’t get in the way. When I am finished I meet Ash out the front with the cars. We choose to take his car because it’s better for long distance travel. It takes us two hours to get to this place, which is in the woods and hardly has anyone there so at least we won’t be embarrassed. There seems to be a couple of workers moving about outside the front of the camp. A couple of them introduce the
We sit in silence for a few minutes while Cooper processes what I have shared with him. I’m secretly hoping that he has finished asking questions but I’m wrong. “What do the monsters do?” “That’s a hard one, monsters are the cause of human deaths and abductions.” Cooper sucks in a sharp breath, then releases “How can I help you?” “Well first off, we need to find Ash, he will be the only other person in these mountains and if that’s not true, we are in trouble.” Cooper nods several times then without further conversation stands up and walks outside. I lay there stunned at how quickly he believed me “Cooper?” I call out “Yes.” Is his reply, but it sounded very far away. “What are you doing?” “I am starting to pack away all the stuff outside so we can make a quick get away tomorrow. If you wouldn’t mind, could you start shoving all the stuff that is not in a bag, into a bag? That would be lovely. I will tell you more when I am finished out here.” As I go through all of
This time my sleep is plagued by nightmares and dreams alike. But I only remember one dream, that still plagues my mind when I wake up. I cry out from shock as I am pulled out of the nightmare. My whole body is trembling and I am covered in sweat, which has drenched my clothing making them stick to my body. The image still haunts me, Ash calling out my name, his hand reaching down to grab my hand as I fall. Then suddenly the dream freezes and words appear in the sky in blood red writing. ‘There coming’ then it flickers ‘were coming, be ready.’ Then suddenly I am falling again, than just before I hit the ground it blacks out. That’s when I woke up. I lie there as still as possible, too scared to move. What if the dream was real? What if it was a warning? This dream makes me more motivated to speed up my recovery and find Ash, my adrenaline speeds up and I begin to feel restless. I have to find Ash but I will need Cooper’s help, which means I will have to tell him all the things he do
Finding the bow and quiver had excited me and I wanted to get out here and find Ash and hope that he has also found his weapons so we can continue this war. I know I still have to relax my ankle and my back as well as my rib. So I will hopefully still be able to stay with Cooper for a day or two, the problem with that will be him asking questions, I can’t continue to lie to him, I have never been good with lies. I also fear growing to attach to him, which will cause a lot of problems as well. Sometimes I wish Cooper could see the monsters but I know he can’t. If he could that would mean he is the bad Ma Vista and he would have killed me while I was unconscious. So far this power I have is horrible and I could endanger a lot of people, especially the ones close to my heart, and I don’t want anything to happen to them. It’s an hour later and I smell something really good coming from outside, I also have not seen Cooper since the small incident that happened earlier; I hope he is no
I cry out as I open my eyes, and I find myself in my own tent, sweat covering my body. That was the scariest nightmare I have ever had. I sit up and look over and find Natalie still sound asleep. I have to get out of here and go hunting before I freak myself out even more. I grab my gear for hunting and head out towards my dad’s hunting trail that he made before he died. Walking along I set up several traps so I have a high chance of catching something for Natalie and myself to eat. So I stumble through the woods which are still filled with darkness from the night before which causes me to remember my dream. I couldn’t stab Natalie not unless something had over powered me. Plus Natalie was wearing the same cloths in the dream, to what she is wearing now. She is just so beautiful I couldn’t imagine hurting her; I even hate seeing her in pain. As I walk back towards my camp and Natalie, I check the traps and what I find is a young deer. This is going to be great breakfast, I grab
“Natalie?” I say, trying to talk to her. “Yes, I was just thinking.” She says randomly, I chuckle at how stupid she just sounded. She roles over and winces from what I believe is pain. “We need to do something about your injuries are you comfortable enough with me to let me do it.” I ask she looks me in the eye and nods. As I check over her body I notice that she has a sprained ankle or twisted ankle and might also have a broken rib. She also has several bruises adorning her body, especially over her back. She ask me what time it was that I found her, but I have no idea what time that was because I didn’t have a watch so I just make it up. Her face seems to pale from the information I give her; I wonder how long she had been lying there before I had found her. “When I found you at the bottom of the hill, my first thought was that you were dead. Then I noticed that you were breathing, so I calmed down a bit then I started wondering what you were doing in the mountains, that
I was on my yearly hunt, but normally I would be with my family, except they died a few weeks ago. I don’t know what or how it happened I had just come home and they were all lying on the floor with pools of blood surrounding them. At first I had thought someone had murdered them but now I am not so sure. As I walk along a path my dad had made when we first started hunting, I find a rabbit trail that looks really fresh. I follow it through the woods until I see something that makes my insides freeze. There only three meters away from me lying on her back is a girl, her arms and legs going in many different angles. Slowly I walk towards the body, unsure whether she is alive or dead. As I get closer I am relieved to see a small rise and fall of the girls chest. What the hell is she doing here alone? When I am standing above her I look down at the girls face and I am struck with a strange emotion I have never felt before. But the girl lying before me is gorgeous; I have never seen any
As it gets later and I still am unable to stand, Cooper asks me if I would prefer to stay with him or if I wanted to leave. “Staying with you is probably safer then going out there into the wild when I can hardly walk.” He nods his head in agreement. I glance up for the first time and actually look at him. He has bright orange hair, greyish-blue eyes and a small amount of freckles that dash across his cheeks, his hair is cut short like Ash’s but his fringe is shorter. He is lean and muscular, I should have figured that out when he said he carried me for three hours. He looks very athletic and is pretty attractive, he also has a nice personality and is very caring, and I immediately take a liking to him. Before we go to sleep Cooper moves the sleeping bag so I have my own room, he then puts all his luggage in the middle and makes himself a bed on the other side. Before I go to sleep I have to ask “Cooper?” “Yes.” he mumbles. “Why are you in the mountains?” “I came up here e
I wake up to find that I am in someone’s arms, at first I think that Ash has found me, but I can tell by his deodorant that, that’s not the case. My body aches all over; it feels like I have broken every bone in my body. But at least I feel secure in who ever these arms belong too. So I drift back to sleep trying to get rid of the throbbing headache that now plagues me. When I wake up again, I am still in the stranger’s arms and he is still walking steadily, I feel slightly better this time. With only a small headache but my whole body is still on fire. And it flares up every time this guy takes a step. After what feels like an hour we arrive at a small clearing, in the clearing is a small tent, not much different from Ash’s and mine. He must sense that I am awake because he starts talking to me. “Hi, you’re lucky I found you, a few hours longer and you would have died.” His voice is smooth and light it almost most makes me go back to sleep. “You know, you could actually say
Once out in the fresh air, I take a deep breath and zone in on all my 5 senses, I feel the warm breeze blowing my hair back from my face, smell the freshness of nature, taste the small mint that is still left in my mouth, I hear all the birds singing in the trees, all the crickets making buzzing noises in the grass surrounding me, all the larger animals running around and snapping leaves and small branches with there feet and of course the leaves rustling over head, due to the wind. I see hundreds of tree trunks, grass covered with leaves and small branches that have fallen from the trees. It is also very gloomy because it is still quite early in the morning and the sunlight rains down in patches landing in certain spots. As I daydream Ash walks up behind me and puts one of his hands on my shoulder. Snapping me back to reality. “Let’s get moving, do we have everything we need?” I run off a checklist “Sword, Shield, Bow, Quiver, Knives, water and food, including fruit and Vegetables
