2025-03-10 18:37:31Climbing out of the car I try not to stare at the “good looking man” at the pump across from me. As I’m trying not to look like a complete stalker while filling up the car I see a flash of movement out of the corner of my eye. Turning slowly I see a familiar car pulling in behind me. Oh no, Nick.
Okay, I know what you probably thinking. “Natalie, you have a crush on Nick!” Well that’s not true! The truth is, I use to have a crush on him when I was younger, but I’m over that now. Even though he is still pretty hot, I am over it, I swear. Nick is 18, one year older than me. As Nick gets out of the car I make a run for the cash register. I know Nick will recognise my Swift out the front and realise I’m inside. He will most likely come looking for me because we haven’t seen each other for one year, but I don’t want to see him right now. As I pay for the petrol I step backwards and bump into someone. I turn around and look straight into the good looking man’s deep brown eyes. At first I’m taken aback at how beautiful they are, but then I realise I’m staring so I take a step back and look at the floor embarrassed. He asks for my name, “Natalie, what’s yours?” He looks at me for a while before replying “The names Ash.” in a soft as velvet voice. Instantly I’m mesmerised by his voice, how could someone so masculine have such a soft voice. Then before I can move he grabs my waist, picks me up and turns around depositing me behind him. Then he just walks up to the register and pays. I’m lost in a sense of confusion, what just happened? But I don’t get time to think about it because a different figure appears in my peripheral vision. Before I can react Nick grabs me and pulls me into a big bear hug. As Nick hugs me he whispers into my ear “Hello Nat.” there’s a short pause before he says “Long time no see.” in a seductive purr. Finally he releases his grip on me and I jump out of his reach before he can grab me again. “Hello Nick.” I reply shortly and try to make a break for my car. Nicks got quick reflexes though and he quickly grabs my arm in a powerful but soft hold, making sure he won’t hurt me. “What’s the rush, Nat?” he asks. Honestly the rush is if I stay here I’m scared about what I will say and do in his presence! So I simply mumble, “Going to see Alex.” and walk away. Well that’s just great now he knows where I’m going, that’s nearly as bad as giving him my home address. While I’m brooding over these thoughts I don’t notice Ash sitting on the bonnet of my car. “How dare you sit on my Swifts bonnet, do you know I had to work my butt off to pay for that. Do you? No you don’t! So get off right NOW!” Ash slowly gets off the bonnet and steps into my personal space “Why sweetheart, has a boy never waited for you to come out of a petrol station?.” Well how dare a stranger have the nerve to say that to me, right in my face? I lift my head up and look him in the eye “The boys that do wait for me, don’t lean on my car, because they have manners, unlike you.” After that comment the look I get is priceless. His mouth forms a slight frown in the corners and his eyes widen in shock. Ha! Take that handsome stranger with bad manners! He opens his mouth to say something when Nick appears again, great just what I need right now. Nick looks at me, then at Ash. A strange emotion flashes through his eyes. He continues to stare at Ash and says “You know, any boy who is going out with Nat, never sits on her car. So I’m guessing you’re a new one.” During the short pause Ash’s eyes flick to me in a moment of confusion before he realises what Nick means, meanwhile Nick is still rambling on “But I guess you wouldn’t know that either because Natalie’s only ever had one boyfriend before. Isn’t that right Nat?” he looks at me innocently like he didn’t mean the offence but I can see straight through him, he’s being a douche bag, a very big one too. So this is my choice, I can go along with what he is saying or punch him in the face. Which option should I take? That is the question. To make my decision for me Nick says “Come on Nat, tell him the truth.” Well that confirms it, he’s being a gigantic douchebag so I choose the latter one. Before he even knows what’s coming I punch him right in the nose! After that everything goes crazy, Nick falls to the ground holding his nose screaming. I stare at my hand in amazement because I have always wanted to punch someone, but I never thought I would get the chance. Ash stares at me with a mixture of amusement and awe. With the adrenaline pulsing through me, I don’t realise that Nick is rising to his feet and before I can defend myself Nick punches me on the check. Geez this guy is an asshole. I can’t believe I had a crush on him. This punch hurts, the pain shoots through my face causing me to close my eyes and when I reopen them slightly, it is just in time to see Nick pulling back to hit me again. As Nick brings his fist forward aiming to hit me in the throat, Ash jumps in front of me, taking the hit in the back. He quickly pivots around and Nick doesn’t even see the fist coming until it’s too late. It connects with Nicks jaw and he is instantly knocked out. Slowly as the stars leave my eyesight I am able to see the damage that’s been done. Nick is still on the ground unconscious and Ash is just standing there staring at me. I know we have to leave before Nick wakes up because he will just continue to fight us because of his arrogant ego. I grab him under the armpits, which by the way smell really bad. I half carry, half drag Nick to his BMW, that’s when Ash notices what I’m doing, so he comes over and helps me stuff Nick into his own car. Surprisingly it doesn’t take too long to put Nick into the car, what actually takes the longest is finding his keys, which are shoved in the back pocket of his jeans. After getting Nick inside, we close the door locking it and pushing the keys through the slight opening we left in the window so he could breath. Ash slowly walks towards me and attentively reaches out a hand softly brushing the bruise that’s already appearing on my left cheek. At the physical contact I flinch, thinking he too is going to punch me, but that doesn’t happen. As I take a step towards my car a wave of dizziness takes over and I sway slightly, before reaching out and grabbing Ash’s forearm. Ash reaches out and grabs me by the waist before whispering in my ear, “Here, let me help you to your car.” Gratefully I nod my head. Gently as though I am something fragile he lifts me up and puts me in the passenger seat of my car. In a calm voice he asks “Can I please have the keys?” at this point I can’t think of any other way to get away from this place so I mumble something sounding like yes and hand over the keys.

Slowly Ash climbs into the driver’s side of the vehicle and starts the car. At first there’s an awkward silence, because neither one of us knows the other. So Ash decides to start the conversation. “That was the best punch I have ever seen.’ At this point I’m too confused to reply because I have a billion thoughts going through my head, but he continues on without any comment from me anyway. “He didn’t even see it coming. For a long while we just sit there in each other’s company, I look at the time and see that it’s all most 7pm. We’ve just been hanging in the car for more than 9 hours. My tummy grumbles and I realise I haven’t had any lunch let alone breakfast yet. “Would you like to come back to my place and finish this chat?” He agrees, as we begin to drive back Ash asks “Won’t it be weird with your family there?” I shake my head. Honestly my parents wouldn’t give a shit if I brought home a boy; they don’t even care about me to begin with. When we pull up at my house we see that the house is deserted, I simply pop the roller door and tell Ash to park on the far right because everyone in my family likes their own different spots and this one ended up being mine. I pull the car to a stop and get out. It’s still smoky outside and it is quite hard to breath, at first I can’t see were the damage is, a few trees have been pulled out of the ground and some of them look like they have been sawn in half. I try to look at the houses more closely, but the smoke is too thick. House after house has gained a little lean to the left, leaning away from where it exploded. I can’t hear anyone moving around outside. Has everyone died? I don’t know what to think about it. As I continue walking to my house I see that none of our neighbours were home, well that’s suspicious. Slowly I come into view of my house, or where my house should have been. Nothing. Everything that I owned, everyone I love appears to be gone. I don’t believe my eyes. This can’t be happening. As I walk through the ash’s of what use to be my house I suddenly hear an ear splitting scream. While we are eating breakfast, I get a text from Alexandria. The beeping scares the life out of me. When I comprehend that it’s my phone I run over to the kitchen bench and grab it. The text reads ‘Natalie are you okay? Please text me back as soon as you get this. We need to talk.’ Then in brackets it says ‘(If you are not dead – Please don’t be dead!)’ Quickly I type a message. ‘Yes, I’m alive but the rest of my family is gone. Don’t know what to do. Would you like to meet up somewhere?’ The reply comes less than a minute later. ‘I’m so sorry about your family. Yes, I would love to meet up. When and where?’ ‘I need new clothes and living supplies, plus I have $2,000 dollars to spend, so I call a shopping spree. Meet you at the mall in 20 minutes. When we leave the mall, I head back to Ash’s place to put my new clothes away. Then I pack for the night at Alex’s, as I finish packing I head down to say goodbye to Ash. When I walk into the kitchen and don’t find him I begin to panic. I walk through the whole house but don’t find him, when I finally get to his bedroom I can hear shuffling around. I guess that he wants to be left alone so I walk towards the front door. I throw my arms around his neck, holding on because on the inside I feel like I’m missing something. We will probably have to research it but maybe I’m starting to fall for him or maybe it’s both and maybe he feels the same way as I do. When we leave the car is in complete silence. It takes us half an hour to get to the library, so the silence lasts that long. Sometimes I would mumble the words to a song on the radio, Ash would sometimes as well. When we get there he only says, “We need a computer and access to informative books.” We choose to work separately because of what happened this morning, I start with the computer and Ash starts with the books. I log in and start searching. I search the word “Ma Vista” and a whole heap of websites come up. I search through some of them but after an hour I start to get restless, it isn’t until I find the website ‘What are Ma Vista’s and what do they do?’ that I get excited. I click on it and read the first paragraph; it has what Alex said to me two days ago. As I continue to read I come across new information, so I call out to Ash. My day of freedom ends up being used to stay in bed all day and that night, Ash sleeps in my bed again. This morning when we woke up, we got out of bed straight away because today is “learn to defend yourself and kill your enemy” day. I am extremely nervous about this training thing but it needs to be done. When I am getting dressed I go through a drawer of cloths and pick out a black long sleeve shirt and black tights, then I grab a pair of Alex’s shoes and a pair of socks. When I finish getting dressed I head to the bathroom and wash my face then I pull my hair up into a tight ponytail so it won’t get in the way. By the time we have everyone up and in the lounge room we have lost half an hour. Everyone looks panicked and unfocused. “Alright guys, the time has come for us to band together to beat this evil that has descended upon us.” With that I grab Ash’s hand and walk towards the front door, they quickly fall into step behind me. We walk onto the street and then onto the main high way that runs through Frostvale. I make sure that everyone still has all their weapons as well as their sand bags and then we stand in a line, restricting any of the monsters to penetrate further into the town. While Ash and I are collecting the last weapons from the garage to hand out among the fighters, I am struck by a message, and it doesn’t take me long to realise that I am not meant to hear it. A small voice in the back of my head calling me “Come now monsters join the battle, I need you here now. It’s been a long time since we have had the chance to destroy the Ma Vista’s and that time has come.” The voice stops. I look at Ash; he must see the horror in my face, because he immediately drops the weapons that are in his hands and runs over to me. We lay tangled in each other’s arms for what feels like ages before I finally decide that I should have a shower, and I disentangle myself from him. Then suddenly a thought of a Blue monster flicks through my mind. Nightmare Finally Together (Natalie)
The escape from the house was easier then expected, as we race across the yard there are no monster insight. Blue had chosen the right moment for my escape, and now I owe him. Once we are outside the houses boundaries Blue pulls up and stops running, which causes me to dive to the side to prevent running into the ginormous monster, and even though he is young he is still quite big. “This is where we must disappear.” I look at him, and nod, “Okay.” He grabs me under the shoulders and under my knees then lifts me up before we disappear. Disappearing is so weird; it’s so hard to explain. I feel wind pushing against my face; it pushes me back against Blue. I can’t see anything, it’s just black all around and yet I can’t actually tell if my eyes are open or closed. All I can hear is Blue’s breathing, there is no wind blowing and yet I can feel it against my face. There is no smell; actually I don’t think I am breathing. Quickly I dial Riley’s number and wait for him to pick up. “Hello, who is it?” “Hey Riley, it’s Ash.” “Yep, what’s happening?” “I need you and your friends to come back to my house, are you nearly finished with all the sand?” “Yeah, we are about to leave.” “Great I have sent Lyrica to get bags to put the sand in, and I have also got one of Natalie’s friends out collecting people that are willing to fight for our cause.” “That’s great, okay well I will meet you at your house in about 10.” “Okay that sounds great, so where did you get the sand from?” “I know this person that works at the zoo, and he said I could take some sand from the enclosures.” “Perfect, okay see you soon.” “Yep, bye.” “Bye.” As soon as he hangs up I walk into the kitchen and sit down. As I climb into the car and slowly pull away from the curb I am struck with a sadness that I have never felt before. Did Alex actually mean what she was saying, how does she know that. Anyway I have to think of other things there is too much to do and too little time to worry about all that now. I will worry about that later, after the war is done and I can have Natalie all to myself. After returning home with Riley, I set to work talking to all of Natalie’s friends. I go to Alexandria first because I know that she will agree to this, she will be the first one that would stand beside Natalie. As I knock on the door, I hear footsteps rushing towards the door, Alex pulls the door open and looks at me and then glances past me as if searching for Natalie. Once she realises that Natalie is not there, her face goes from an expression of happiness to one of panic, her eyes seem to search my face and as she looks in my eyes she knows something is wrong. “What is it Ash, what has happened?” I realise that I am going to have to explain everything that has happened.
