Chapter 41 - A Brother or a Lover

I woke feeling incredibly groggy and with a raging headache.I push myself up from the hard mattress I was led, my whole body screaming in protest at the uncomfortable position I had been sleeping in and look about at the dark dingy room that I found myself in.“What the hell happened last night.” I thought out loud. I swung my bare legs around and sat down on the edge of the cot, noticing how I was still wrapped in the bed sheet from last night, naked underneath other that the flimsy lace bra I still wore. My skin broke out in gooseflesh with the cold air sitting around me like a cloak. The scent of mine and Lucas’ lovemaking still lingered on the sheet offering my some comfort in this dingy hole.Feeling slightly more awake I check myself over for injuries. Other than the pounding headache, sore muscles and the congealed wound on the palm of my hand, I seemed to be in one piece physically. Emotionally, there was definitely something wrong. My

Chapter 42 - Broken Hearts Part 1

Lucas POVPain, that is all I could feel. It snaked through every part of my body like someone was injecting cement into my blood steam. I groan in agony as I try to sit up. My shoulder protesting with each laboured movement.I manage to pull myself to a sitting position and look about the carnage around me. The temple was a mess, bodies littered the floor, humans and demons combined. Over them was a thick blanket of red flower petals in the most beautiful paradox.I grit my teeth and pull myself to standing, my head spinning at the pain radiating from my shoulder. I look down to find an arrow embedded the muscle. Holding the base I yank it out with a quick tug, the relief was brief, before my head began to spin dangerously. I swayed on my feet.“Magda!” A voice calls out from somewhere behind me, before strong arms wrap around me. I look up to see the face of my father peering down at me.“Its poison, majesty.” Magda says i

Chapter 43 - Brothers at Arms

As soon as my strength began to return to my body, I slipped from the underworld undetected. I stepped into the human realm, I reached out to Lysander with my mind. Unlike a lot of demons, Lysander and myself always had a certain ability, we could communicate with each other simply by thinking about the other. We kept it hidden from our mentor, knowing that a gift like ours would likely be exploited if allowed too. It wasn’t something that all demons could do. I was surprised that Avalon and I shared the same ability when we finished our mate bound. Lysander was a few years older than me, he was in training around the same time as I was brought to the underworld. I was 8, he was 11. Like me, Lysander was the only living son of his father, another original that was cast out of heaven. Making him an heir to one of the few founding families of the underworld. We bonded over our joint hatred of the underworld. Being the son of a high ranking demon, meant

Chapter 44 - Return to Pear Tree Cottage

Lysander  Pain, gut-wrenching, heart-breaking pain. The moment that it flooded my system, I knew that Avalon had broken the mate bond between us. It was like an organ had been ripped out at the root. The pain penetrated even piece of my body.I had been expecting it, but nothing had prepared me for the level of pain that it brought. I don’t what I found more debilitating, the fact she had chosen another over me, or the fact that the person she was know bound to was Lucas.  Her eyes, her perfectly round green eyes were all that I could picture as I lay on the ground, my heart aching and breathing ragged. Even as the pain slowly began to ebb away, all I could picture was her. Her black hair flying in the wind, her fierce persona and stubborn defiance. But most eye her piercing green orbs, which caught my attention the moment I laid eyes on her. She was perfect for me in every way imaginable, it was not ha

Chapter 45 - A Mothers Love has Limits

Pear Tree Cottage hadn’t really changed at all In the last 10 years. The garden still sat neat and pristine. Roses still flowering even as Winter grew nearer. We stood on the outer boarders, unable to cross over onto Lilith’s lands without permission. We arrived just before dusk. Our figures visible on the horizon, in full view for Lilith to see. We stood, half shrouded in darkness and waited. We didn’t need to wait for long before she materialised in front of us. As unchanged as the house behind her.“Demons are not welcome here.” She calls to us from the relative safety of her wards.“Well, that’s not very friendly is it… mother?” I ask her, my eyebrow hooked up into my hair line.“Lucas.” She said, seemingly only just noticing me. Surprise registered on her face as she took in my form.“Lucas what are you doing here?” A suspicious look clouding her other

Chapter 46 - The Devil and his Witch

Lilith I appear back in my kitchen, the familiar smell of lavender and rosemary permeating the air, calming my racing mind. I prowl up and down the already well trodden flagstones. My fingers running through my hair in agitation. A large Iron kettle began to whistle of the aga, sending out billowing plumes of white steam as it screamed at me that the water inside was boiled. Breaking out of my reverie I stalk over and pull the kettle off of the aga.  Avalon, this was Avalon. I told myself. The same girl who not three months ago knocked on my door, looking for help. I couldn’t very well leave her in her time of need now, could I? She was my best friend’s daughter. Oona, who like me had been abused and used by the underworld, was more like a sister to me. We had made a promise to each other, even before our children were born, that no matter what happened to us. We would always look after the others child. It was one of th

Chapter 47 - Blood is thicker than water

Lucas Watching the exchange between my parents was almost an out of body experience. I felt like an intruder. I had never known them at there best, but it was obvious, even to me that there was once love there. It had simply changed of the course of history. Their respective ideals had changed, and the had grown into different people. Lilith held the bloodied dagger in her shaking hand, as she stared at the stop that Lucifer once stood. Her eyes gleamed as tears spilled over, falling down her cheeks. Her lips trembled as she tried to hold herself together. “We should go.” Lysander spoke up behind me. This seemed to break Lilith from her own thoughts as her head whipped over to us once more. “Yes,” she said, hastily wiping her wet cheeks, “but first we should locate where the portal to the hunters realm is. To do that I need to scry.” With that, she turned and walked back towards her cottage, with a wave of a arm and a gesture

Chapter 48 - Hopelessly Alone

Avalon I huddled into the corner of my cot, trying to keep as warm as possible, which seemed an impossibility in this dank room which held no warmth at all.I had been left in the jogging bottoms and shirt that Ben had given me, with no access to blankets or even shoes since I was brought here. The only additional source of warmth I had was the sheet that I brought with me from the underworld.I felt completely helpless. I seemed to spend more time in darkness than in light. The only time I seemed to get any was the brief window that the sun shone through my tiny cell window for a couple of hours a day, before it dipped back behind the cold stone walls.Ben had not bothered gracing me with his presence since our last meeting. The only interaction I had was the occasional guard sliding a tray with a “meal” for me once a day.The meal consisted of stale bread, a small chunk of hard cheese and a glass of wate

Chapter 49 - The Wards Are Down

Lilith was right, when the wards came down, everyone in the hunters realm would know of there arrival. The ground shook under our feet as Lilith cut through the last strands of the portal, allowing Lysander and myself to cross over the borders.  The sound of glass shattering to the floor, and buildings creaking under the sudden movement beneath them was enough of an alarm, that they would soon be besieged by warriors. Lilith collapsed to the floor in the exhaustion, her face pale and beading with sweat. I paused, unsure whether to help her or carry on with the task at hand, I had a limited window in which to get Avalon and then get out, and the more time that passed, the more difficult it would become. She waved me away as if to tell me she was alright when she noticed my hesitation. I give her a small nod and follow Lysander across the bridge. Hunters were running about across the yard in front of us, the vast majority unarmed. Our attack had ca

Chapter 50 - If Not Me, Then No One

No longer than ten minutes after he had left, Ben returned, opening my cell door with a loud rattle. His nose was bloodied, dribbling down his chin and staining his white t-shirt. I wanted to ask him what was going on, but the way he stalked into me cell, his face a dark scowl and his eyes trained on me, made me stop in my tracks. He reached forward, grabbing the top of my arm and pulling me against his hard body, my back to his front. I could feel his strong fingers digging in painfully to my flesh. His mouth flush against my ear, his breathing ragged and the smell of copper permeating the air making my stomach roll. “Your boyfriends outside, Avalon. Did you know that?” He spoke as if it were an endearment he was whispering to me. His free hand moved up and cupped my breast, squeezing it painfully. “Perhaps we should leave you with a parting gift, humm?” He suggested. I didn’t take much for me to realise what he was suggesting, he was implyin
