Chapter 9 Follow The Leader

Yesterday, I told one of the staff to burn to wig.

That stupid thing was the root and cause of my downfall. I am pretty sure of it. So to say, I think it deserves a bitter end.

I was walking along the hallway with my bag slung over my should as usual. I made a stop at my locker and grabbed the needed books for my first period. Then, I headed for my classroom.

Once I opened the door, my eyes scanned the area for a bit to make sure the pests - a.k.a the student councils - weren’t around.

"Morning, Hailey!!"

"Hailey! Hi!"

The student greeted me but I took no interest in them as I continued my search. When I found no sign of them, I smiled on the inside and headed for my seat. I placed my bag on top of my table. I pulled out my headphones and played some music on my phone as I gazed out at the window towards the field.

I closed my eyes as I focused on the song and smiled inwardly as I sang the lyrics inside of my head.

But then, the music suddenly stopped.

No, not because my phone died, but because someone pulled my headphones out. I felt one of my veins pop when I whirled around to see the bastard that disrupted my almost-fine mood.

Sandy was right there in front of me as she grinned. "Good morning, Hailey. How are you?" She greeted and beamed brightly at me.

I, on the other hand, felt one of my eyes twitch while my hands balled into fists like a crazy person ready to pounce.

You know that feeling that you wanted to do something such as hurt a person but you just can't?

Yeah. That's the feeling.

And it didn't help when the rest of her gang arrived. Leo, Xander, and Sheen entered the room and all the girls went nuts. Xander and Leo don’t seem to mind but Sheen gladly waved at them.

When Sheen caught sight of me, he made a gesture as if to wave, but seeing the murderous look on my face made him think twice that he slowly lowered his hand to his side. But even though that look worked on Sheen, it didn't work for the other two.

Leo ignored my look as he quietly made his way to his seat in front of me. Xander, on the other hand, rolled his eyes as if he had seen that look a million times before he went to his seat behind me.

On the bright side at least they aren't talking to me.

I was about to place my headphones back on when I noticed Leo twisting in his seat to face me. He placed his hand on my table as he looked at me in the eye. "We need to talk to you." His handsome feature turning serious.

"No." I deadpanned, but I know for a fact that Leo wouldn't give up and would argue more. Luckily, the bell rang signaling for our first period. A second later, our professor arrived, bringing the whole class to full attention. Leo hesitated as he gave me one last look before he faces front.

The class stood up and greeted our professor before we all sat down. After what seemed like years of listening to other teachers teaching about their subjects, it was finally time for us to have a short break. I let out a sigh of relief as I started to stretch my legs and arms, grinning slightly for the wonderful feeling it left.

I saw the other students hurried to go out of the room. I watched and waited patiently for them to leave. As soon as the door closes, I plan to sleep. That was until I noticed that I wasn't alone in the room.

Oh great.

My eyes darted back and forth towards the four remaining students. Sandy, Xander, Leo, and Sheen quietly sat in their seats. There was an awkward silence for about a few seconds and within each one, I felt that something bad might happen.

I watched them cautiously in case they make a move. When I noticed that they weren't doing anything, I decided to head out since I can't take the atmosphere anymore.

When I got up from my chair, I noticed that they also stood up. My muscles tighten in response as their chairs made noises on the floor. I looked at them one by one but they were all looking in front as if they don't notice me.

I sat down and they did the same. This time, my eyes narrowed in suspicion as I abruptly got up. In my horror, they followed.

I gritted my teeth as I took a seat, only to see that they also did the same.

WHAT IS THIS!? FOLLOW THE LEADER!?!?

This is getting annoying.

I got up again and they followed. But this time, I only pretended that I was going to sit. When they followed, I took that opportunity as I kicked Sheen's chair away made him fall on the ground.

"Fvck!" He yelled as he fell.

At that moment, I gave them all a pointed look. "What do you guys want now? If you've got something to say then say it. I'm getting tired of this." I said.

They all exchanged glances before returning their gazes back at me. Finally, Sandy decided to talk. She had a small shy smile on her face as she said. "We just wanted you to hang out with us."

I raise an eyebrow at her. Is this one of their way of keeping an eye out for me?

"They mean it this time you know?" My head turned to see Xander at my side. He sighed and put his hands into his pocket as he looked at me. "We already know that you wouldn't tell our secret seeing as we already have something of yours too. But Sandy here wanted to make friends with you."

I gave him a dubious look. "And you're okay with this?" I asked. Knowing fully well that he doesn't like me and I don't like him either. He shrugged.

"Heck no. I don't like you one bit. I tried to tell them not to but it leads to a votation. They won as I was the only one who was opposed to the idea." I looked at him in surprise before I shifted my gaze to the other members. My heart started to feel warm knowing that they wanted to befriend me.

But I quickly shook that feeling off. I can't make friends now. Not when I am still in high school and not when I still have a character to keep up.

Instead, I frowned at them. "And what makes you think I like to be friends with you? I appreciate the offer but I don't like any one of you." Well, I do like Leo, but there is no way that I am going to say that out loud. "Sorry, but will you please just leave me alone?"

I took in all of their expressions one by one. Xander rolled his eyes and looked away. Sheen looked at Sandy who was pursing her lips and looking down at her feet while Leo had an unreadable look on his face.

"Okay then. If that's what you like. We'll leave you alone from now on unless you’re the one who engages in a conversation first." Leo said. "But if you change your mind, you can have lunch with us in the student council room." With that, he looked at all of his members and nodded at them before they all head out of the room and leaving me all alone.

I felt guilt welling up inside of me. I really didn't mean those words. I wanted to make friends, but there are just things that you want that you can't have. At least not yet anyway.

I sighed and took my seat as I waited for the bell to ring.

Alone. As usual.

The whole morning during class, I avoided making eye contact with them. It was embarrassing and awkward at the same time. Luckily, they didn't bother to talk to me. I guess it was because of their promise not to speak to me unless I initiate the conversation. And I can't say that I am not happy about that. When lunch came, I was afraid to go out and eat at my spot under the tree in fear that they would be there. So instead, I went to eat at the cafeteria at my reserved table. I, of course, brought my own lunch with me. I muttered.I followed Sandy to the far left side of the room and opened the door as she ushered me in. Inside, I felt like I was inside a Hannah Montana closet. On the walls were racks filled with shoes and clothes. A mini crystal chandelier hung in the middle. At the center of the room was a huge round bed with red bed sheets.

My first instinct is to run away with Xander. My second instinct is to run towards Vanessa and tackle her. That girl deserves whatever body pain I am planning on inflicting on her. I guess it was not enough for her to ruin me. Now, she wants to drag Xander along too. She obviously needed some much needed drama to put her on the spot again. To what extent is she willing to ruin people’s lives just so she can stay in the spotlight? I have never been so angry at anyone before, but I will deal with my emotions later. My priority right now is Xander. Looking at Xander, I was surprised to see him standing so calmly in front of me. Well, he wasn’t entirely calm. He was shaking, but it wasn’t from fear or anxiety. He looks like he is about to burst out laughing. What is he so excited about? “Xander?” I grab his hand. “Xander, come on. Let’s get you out of here. I will call my dad to pick us up.” Xander’s gaze softens when he turns to me. “Thanks, Hailey.” He kisses my forehead, which

The big day has arrived, and even though I have complete faith in my mother's design abilities, I can not help but feel nervous. I have seen the design before, but when I look in the mirror, I cannot help but admire the dress. It’s a light lavender dress with a sweetheart neckline and a thin laced strap to keep it in place—my mom knows I was never gifted in the frontal area. The skirt is a flare shape, with the hemline ending perfectly a few centimeters from the floor. Most of the beadwork is at the neckline and waist since the material used for the skirt is chromatic. It shines perfectly on its own. My mother didn’t want me to look too mature so my hair is left in a side loose braid. “Perfect!” My mother enters the dressing room just as I finish clasping dangling earrings in my ears. I shy away from the mirror at how my mother is continuously gushing at me and my outfit. “Darling, you look wonderful! Of course, I expect no less from my daughter, who carries my perfect genes!” “N

Preparation for the dance has been going smoothly. Our efforts have come to fruition when everything is finally coming together. I hate every second of the work, but getting to see the final outcome feels somehow rewarding. Speaking of which, while we were still preparing the venue, the others figured out that Xander and I were already dating. I’m pretty sure that was the case when we told them, because their reaction was a robotic surprise, like they hadn’t tried practicing it. “Wow. We totally had no idea.” “Really? We hadn’t noticed.” “Congratulations!” Only Leo had a really genuine reaction from the group, even lightly clapping his hands in celebration. This world needs a lot more Leo—so pure and innocent. The rest of us can just die (I'm kidding!). “See? I told you they’d know.” Xander crosses his arms and pointedly looks toward Sandy. “I bet you already have proofs and created a group chat where only you, Sheen, and Leo are in it to show the photos.” Leo and Sheen exch

Taking a photoshoot with The Pandorgriffs always feels like bliss for me, despite the number of times that we’ve done this before. It seems that I will always be their fan, no matter what. Actually, that’s not the only thing that makes me excited to work with them. It’s also the fact that I get to work with Xander too. It’s only been a day since we started dating, but it seems like I can’t help but feel light and happy whenever we see each other. He keeps meeting my gaze during our turn and giving me secret grins and a wink. If Xander could be an animal, he would definitely be a fox. Sandy, the ever so reigning queen of gossip, managed to catch that Xander and I have been looking at each other all throughout work. This hellhound of a girl literally has been giving us both a look of suspicion and, I swear, I think her nostrils are flaring like she caught the scent of a hot topic. Xander and I haven’t told the others about our relationship yet. We’re not trying to hide it from them

As the school’s cool girl, I have numerous people confessing to me on a daily basis, but having someone that I know confess to me, especially one that I like, is just embarrassing—in a good way. The next day, I was so tired. I could not even sleep just thinking about it. We’re supposed to head to the mall today to buy the materials needed to make the design. Of course, Xander is going to be there. Unexpectedly, I arrived at the meeting place earlier than planned. I’ve got nothing better to do because if I continue to stay at home, I might just keep staring at my reflection and recalling the confession. It was a confession, right? I mean, I am almost certain that it was. Before we parted ways, Xander assured me that he doesn’t need an answer right away and is willing to wait. Actually, I really wanted t

I rarely get into serious situations that I give a damn about. Right now, I badly wish that I was in one of those situations so I could just laugh and ignore it. I guess I have not gotten my luck as Hailey May Collins working yet because the situation in question involves Xander and the others. “You guys are going to disband?” My tongue felt heavy when I said it. I knew what I heard, but I still could not believe it. “Can you tell me why?” “It’s not exactly a secret, but I assure you that it was a mutual agreement on everyone’s part.” Xander looks uncomfortable, making me wish that I hadn’t asked the question in the first place. “I’m sorry. You don’t have to answer my question if you are feeling uncomfortable.” I hastily added and avoided his gaze. As much as I am dying to know their reasons, I should still respect their privacy. The very next day, I was humming as I headed to the student council room after taking my special exams—I’m not going to talk about how well or poorly I did. It doesn’t matter. I feel like I have accumulated enough points to graduate anyway.I met Sandy at the door, and I gave her the brightest mischievous grin that I could muster. Sandy just smiled at me in return before heading inside the council room. I still have the blackmail photo of her and Sheen on their secret date that I am dying to show her. Because my exams are finally out of the way, I have no choice but to participate in my student council duties. I don’t mind doing it these days, and my old self would laugh at me if I admitted it out loud, but hey, I am here to have fun with Sandy. It’s payback for all the teasing that she put me through. “Hey, Sandy.” I smile, heading over to her and plastering on a smile. Sandy gives me a perplexed look. She’s probably wondering why I wasn’t hostile with her today. “Good day to you,

Xander and I are sitting not too far from each other. None of us are even speaking. I am sitting casually and bouncing my legs nervously while thinking of ways to strike up a conversation. From how Xander is busy scrolling through his phone, I don’t even know if he would like to talk to me. It’s always been difficult to read Xander’s mood, so I decided to risk it and converse with him. “The weather is nice.” I start. “It’s raining heavily outside, Hailey.” He responded without looking up from his phone. I should try another approach. “I didn’t know that you were coming.” “I thought your mother told you that I would be coming for the fitting.” This time, Xander did look up. I c
