Chapter 14 To Get The Sponsors

My dad closed the restaurant early today so that he and I can go home together. We talked on the way about things that happened earlier at the restaurant. We laughed and joked about the customers and our work.

I actually enjoyed the ride home considering that I don't always hang out with my dad this much because of his busy schedule.

As soon as we got home, we found mom and Kaila on the couch talking in hushed voices. When they saw us, they both got to their feet. Mom beamed and came to hug me before she went to dad kissed him on the cheek.

Not wanting to see more of their PDA, I went and sit on the couch with Kaila. You'd think that 20 years of marriage will help cease the lovey-dovey affection of my mom and dad with each other but no. They’re still had over heels for each other.

I looked at Kaila and scrunched my face at her. She laughed and turned to face the television. My mom and dad headed for the kitchen to make us dinner. Even though we were in the living room and with the television going on, I could still hear the sizzling of something being cooked from the kitchen.

Not to mention smell the aroma of something being cooked.

After what seemed like an eternity of waiting, dinner was finally served and we all went to the dining room to eat.

"So," Started my dad as he slices a piece of meat from his place before popping it into his mouth. "How'd the meeting go? I suspect that you got the sponsor?"

I nearly choked on my own meal after remembering how I ditched mom and went to dad. I suddenly felt guilty and looked up from my plate to my mom. Well, it couldn't be helped that my phone rang at the most inconvenient time after all.

Thanks to a certain someone.

At the mention of the meeting, both my mom and Kaila became quiet. Kaila turned to my mom before she spoke for her. "It was alright." She said then turned her attention back to her plate, not giving us any detail of what really happened at the meeting.

From the looks of it, the meeting didn't go well. Dad must have sensed this too because he didn't press on the issue any longer.

"The Pandorgriffs just released their new album and it already sold 20 million copies!!" I turned my attention to the television. It showed a video of one of The Pandergrofs's music videos as the reporter continued to report. "These teenage girl and boy band are getting more and more-" The television suddenly turned off.

I turned to see mom up from her seat with the remote in her hand. Her expression was unreadable as she looked at the now black screen of the tv.

"Mom?" I asked her.

She silently took her seat once again and resumed eating. After what she did just now, I figured that it must be serious and I am worried for her. "Mom." I called her again. This time she looked at me and a small-forced smile. "What's wrong?" I asked her. "You’re acting weird. Please tell us."

She just stared at me as if she was contemplating whether to tell us.

"Are you mad at me that I ditched earlier? Mom, I'm sorry-"

Mom shook her head. "No, honey. It's not your fault." She shook her head and massaged her temples. "It's just a problem at work." She looked so stressed out that I felt sorry for her. The urge to help her suddenly came.

Dad suddenly reached out and held her hand in his. "What is it, love? You know you can tell us. Hailey and I will help you. You know that." Dad looked extremely worried as he gazed into Mom’s eyes.

Mom looked away and let out a long tired and exasperated sigh before turning back at us. She looked sideways at Kaila who gave her an encouraging nod.

"I think we should tell them." Said Kaila.

"Tell us about what?" I asked and looked from Kaila to my mom in search of an explanation.

Mom nodded at Kiala before turning back at us. Her eyes mirrored sadness. "We-we didn't get the contract for the sponsor."

"What!?" Dad and I both exclaimed. This was the first time that we heard of this. Mom's runway project always has a sponsor. She never fails to get one.

"Are you sure?"

"Dear, maybe you've heard it wrong."

Mom shook her head. "No. He gave us back the papers."

"But how?" I asked, nearly getting up from my seat in disbelief. "Earlier I heard him congratulate you for your works. Seems to me that you've already got it signed." When I thought about it, dread suddenly filled me in when a realization suddenly hit me. "Wait. Is this because of what happened earlier with my ring tone that made them changed their mind? Oh mom I'm so so-"

"No!!" She quickly said. "It wasn't that - although you have to admit that they looked annoyed at that time. Hailey, listen, the reason why they didn't sign the papers was because I could not comply with their condition."

"What condition?"

Kaila spoke when it seemed that my mom was having a hard time answering. "He wants The Pandorgriffs to be the models for her project. If she can't get them then the contract won't be signed."

At the sound of their band name, I suddenly felt anger. "Why them?" I asked, hoping that my hatred didn't show when I said it.

"They saw the number of sales that we got from our last photoshoot with The Pandorgriffs from our online page. They figured that if The Pandorgriffs would model it then tons of people would come and buy our clothes." Answered Kaila.

My hands clenched my knife and fork tightly. Not them again. Why is everything about them? Why do all my problems have to start and end with them? It's funny, really, how I used to idolize them and listen to their songs and buy their albums to killing them with a butter knife and fork in my mind.

I hate them so much.

I grunted. "Can't we find other sponsors?"

"We can't. Not with the little time we have left. Plus, I think most of the trusted sponsors are already taken by other lines." I cursed under my breath.

"But, dear, can't you get them to agree? You already made them model once for Hailey, didn't you?"

"Greg, it took all my power and connections to get them out of their busy schedule just to model for my line. I don't think it will work again." Then she sighed. "It's fine though. I guess we just have to skip this year’s runway project." With that, she excuses herself and left for the kitchen with her plate to wash.

I was about to go after her when Kaila stopped me. "Don't." She said. "We can't do anything to help her." Hearing her say it left a heavy feeling in my chest. I looked helplessly at the kitchen door and sat back down. We all fell silent. I looked at my plate suddenly not feeling that hungry anymore.

When dinner was over, I went to my room feeling heavy. I laid on my bed as I thought of what mom had said. I know for a fact that even though she said that it was fine, she was devastated. She loves her work with a burning passion.

Just imagine it being taken away just because she cant hire a specific group of teenagers to model for her.

Speaking of the said teenagers, I felt a flash of anger towards them before it was gone. Well, I can't really blame them. They were just doing their jobs. It's their fame that is to blame.

Kaila's words played over and over in my head. "We can't do anything to help her." I repeated and sighed. I buried my face in my pillows for a seconds before grabbing my phone to check the time. As the screen flashed, a notification suddenly popped up saying that I have a message from Sandy on Twitter.

My eyes suddenly squinted as I read Sandy's and wondered if I have dyslexia for I am seeing the name Sophie from The Pandorgriffs. I gasped.

I shot up from my bed, still grabbing a hold of my phone while Kaila's words suddenly grew fainter. "We can't do anything to help her my butt." I whispered as an idea suddenly popped into my head. We can't do anything about my mom's problem, but I'm pretty sure a group of annoying student councils can.

I went to my phone book to look for Sandy's number that I blocked. My fingers hovered over the unblock button as my heart race in excitement while my brain screamed at me that this was a bad idea. But I am doing this for my mom and I don't care if it’s a bad idea or not as long as I can help her.

Closing my eyes, I pressed the unblock button and turned to peak as I saved her number. After that, I clicked her name to write her a text message before pausing.

What am I going to say?

Oh well. Might as well start typing.

--------------------

SOS I need your help.

----------------------

Nah! Not this one. Too needy.

--------------------

I have a problem.

---------------------

Ew. Sounds…..sketchy

-----------------------

HELP ME OR I SWEAR I WILL SPILL THE BEANS ABOUT YOU GUYS BEING THE PANDORGIFFS!!!

---------------------

Tempting but we'll just end up blackmailing each other in the end. Plus, I figured that if I want their help then I might as well do it nicely.

With that in mind, I started to write something simple so we can talk about it personally.

----------------------

Hey, I need to talk to you guys tomorrow.

-----------------------

Then I press sent and watch as the message read delivered.

The whole morning during class, I avoided making eye contact with them. It was embarrassing and awkward at the same time. Luckily, they didn't bother to talk to me. I guess it was because of their promise not to speak to me unless I initiate the conversation. And I can't say that I am not happy about that. When lunch came, I was afraid to go out and eat at my spot under the tree in fear that they would be there. So instead, I went to eat at the cafeteria at my reserved table. I, of course, brought my own lunch with me. After the soup thing on the first day, I don't trust the cafeteria for edible foods anymore. As usual, I was alone at my table as I silently and slowly ate my lunch, chicken sandwich, and an apple.I heard a crash and I immediately looked up to see where the noise was coming from.

I ask in bewilderment. They all paused and stared at me as if I was stupid. Then I suddenly remembered that they are The Pandorgriffs and it all suddenly made sense. "Of course. Sorry for asking." I muttered.I followed Sandy to the far left side of the room and opened the door as she ushered me in. Inside, I felt like I was inside a Hannah Montana closet. On the walls were racks filled with shoes and clothes. A mini crystal chandelier hung in the middle. At the center of the room was a huge round bed with red bed sheets.

The next day, after I made the deal with the student council, there was a ceremony the next morning. Of course, it was held by the student councils and none of us knew what it was. But all I heard was that it was something important that all the students of Waynard High must witness.I let out an irritated sigh. It's been 15 minutes since we were called down to wait and I'm getting bored. This better be worth it or else!!!Looking around me, it seems as if I was the only one feeling irritated. The other students seemed pretty excited about this ceremony that they are planning. I was on the verge of throwing small papers at the students and blame them on the person next to me just to cause a scene but noooo.....cool Hailey won't allow it.Killjoy."Students, may we

As soon as we got into the student council room, Xander made me sit on one of the couches while he and the rest of the members looked down on me, which I really don't appreciate. The way that they were looking at me was as if I was someone who was crazy or something."What?" I frowned when they look at me for too long. "What is it?"Leo shook his head. "I don't even know where to start." He said and took in a deep breath before looking at me again. "But I am going to ask this though. Why would you put that guy in the locker?"I thought back at the event earlier and I shrugged. "Why not?""Miss Collins, you can't just put people inside lockers for no reason.""Well, that guy sure did that to the nerd. Why can't I?"

He said. "My name is Romeo."...Romeo? Like in Romeo and Juliet?Wow. And he had the audacity about questioning the name Waldo."Nice to meet you, R-Romeo." "This was not part of our deal, but if it means that you will be able to fulfill then alright. I'll help." I said defeatedly while the rest of them cheered in glee."Hailey, do you have any experience walking on fashion shows?" Kevin asked. At that question, I averted my gaze. "A long time ago." I answered shortly before returning my gaze at them. "Alright. Stand back and watch the pro." I started forward and headed to the back of the stage wher

My first instinct is to run away with Xander. My second instinct is to run towards Vanessa and tackle her. That girl deserves whatever body pain I am planning on inflicting on her. I guess it was not enough for her to ruin me. Now, she wants to drag Xander along too. She obviously needed some much needed drama to put her on the spot again. To what extent is she willing to ruin people’s lives just so she can stay in the spotlight? I have never been so angry at anyone before, but I will deal with my emotions later. My priority right now is Xander. Looking at Xander, I was surprised to see him standing so calmly in front of me. Well, he wasn’t entirely calm. He was shaking, but it wasn’t from fear or anxiety. He looks like he is about to burst out laughing. What is he so excited about? “Xander?” I grab his hand. “Xander, come on. Let’s get you out of here. I will call my dad to pick us up.” Xander’s gaze softens when he turns to me. “Thanks, Hailey.” He kisses my forehead, which

The big day has arrived, and even though I have complete faith in my mother's design abilities, I can not help but feel nervous. I have seen the design before, but when I look in the mirror, I cannot help but admire the dress. It’s a light lavender dress with a sweetheart neckline and a thin laced strap to keep it in place—my mom knows I was never gifted in the frontal area. The skirt is a flare shape, with the hemline ending perfectly a few centimeters from the floor. Most of the beadwork is at the neckline and waist since the material used for the skirt is chromatic. It shines perfectly on its own. My mother didn’t want me to look too mature so my hair is left in a side loose braid. “Perfect!” My mother enters the dressing room just as I finish clasping dangling earrings in my ears. I shy away from the mirror at how my mother is continuously gushing at me and my outfit. “Darling, you look wonderful! Of course, I expect no less from my daughter, who carries my perfect genes!” “N

Preparation for the dance has been going smoothly. Our efforts have come to fruition when everything is finally coming together. I hate every second of the work, but getting to see the final outcome feels somehow rewarding. Speaking of which, while we were still preparing the venue, the others figured out that Xander and I were already dating. I’m pretty sure that was the case when we told them, because their reaction was a robotic surprise, like they hadn’t tried practicing it. “Wow. We totally had no idea.” “Really? We hadn’t noticed.” “Congratulations!” Only Leo had a really genuine reaction from the group, even lightly clapping his hands in celebration. This world needs a lot more Leo—so pure and innocent. The rest of us can just die (I'm kidding!). “See? I told you they’d know.” Xander crosses his arms and pointedly looks toward Sandy. “I bet you already have proofs and created a group chat where only you, Sheen, and Leo are in it to show the photos.” Leo and Sheen exch

Taking a photoshoot with The Pandorgriffs always feels like bliss for me, despite the number of times that we’ve done this before. It seems that I will always be their fan, no matter what. Actually, that’s not the only thing that makes me excited to work with them. It’s also the fact that I get to work with Xander too. It’s only been a day since we started dating, but it seems like I can’t help but feel light and happy whenever we see each other. He keeps meeting my gaze during our turn and giving me secret grins and a wink. If Xander could be an animal, he would definitely be a fox. Sandy, the ever so reigning queen of gossip, managed to catch that Xander and I have been looking at each other all throughout work. This hellhound of a girl literally has been giving us both a look of suspicion and, I swear, I think her nostrils are flaring like she caught the scent of a hot topic. Xander and I haven’t told the others about our relationship yet. We’re not trying to hide it from them

As the school’s cool girl, I have numerous people confessing to me on a daily basis, but having someone that I know confess to me, especially one that I like, is just embarrassing—in a good way. You’d thought that I would jump in glee and throw sparkles and rainbows at everyone’s face out of joy, but nope. Before I could even give my answer, Leo and the others came back. The next day, I was so tired. I could not even sleep just thinking about it. We’re supposed to head to the mall today to buy the materials needed to make the design. Of course, Xander is going to be there. Unexpectedly, I arrived at the meeting place earlier than planned. I’ve got nothing better to do because if I continue to stay at home, I might just keep staring at my reflection and recalling the confession. It was a confession, right? I mean, I am almost certain that it was. Before we parted ways, Xander assured me that he doesn’t need an answer right away and is willing to wait. Actually, I really wanted t

I rarely get into serious situations that I give a damn about. Right now, I badly wish that I was in one of those situations so I could just laugh and ignore it. I knew what I heard, but I still could not believe it. “Can you tell me why?” “It’s not exactly a secret, but I assure you that it was a mutual agreement on everyone’s part.” Xander looks uncomfortable, making me wish that I hadn’t asked the question in the first place. “I’m sorry. You don’t have to answer my question if you are feeling uncomfortable.” I hastily added and avoided his gaze. As much as I am dying to know their reasons, I should still respect their privacy. The very next day, I was humming as I headed to the student council room after taking my special exams—I’m not going to talk about how well or poorly I did. It doesn’t matter. I feel like I have accumulated enough points to graduate anyway.I met Sandy at the door, and I gave her the brightest mischievous grin that I could muster. Sandy just smiled at me in return before heading inside the council room. I still have the blackmail photo of her and Sheen on their secret date that I am dying to show her. Because my exams are finally out of the way, I have no choice but to participate in my student council duties. I don’t mind doing it these days, and my old self would laugh at me if I admitted it out loud, but hey, I am here to have fun with Sandy. It’s payback for all the teasing that she put me through. “Hey, Sandy.” I smile, heading over to her and plastering on a smile. Sandy gives me a perplexed look. She’s probably wondering why I wasn’t hostile with her today. “Good day to you,

It’s always been difficult to read Xander’s mood, so I decided to risk it and converse with him. “The weather is nice.” I start. “It’s raining heavily outside, Hailey.” He responded without looking up from his phone.
