Chapter 8

ผู้เขียน: Ebon Luna
Watching the Iris Nightshade juices seep into the ground, Emory just shook his head and sighed, saying nothing.

It was Cora, sitting in her wheelchair, who spoke up for him. "Aunt Hilda, even if you don't believe Emory, you didn't have to smash the glass like that…"

"That's enough, Cora. Shut your mouth," Hilda cut her off coldly. "Look at you—you're crippled yourself, and you're still defending this con man?"

She turned her glare toward Helen next. "Helen! Can't you keep your son-in-law in check? Why are you letting him cause a scene in the hospital?"

"Emory!" Helen exploded, her voice sharp and angry. "If you say one more word, get out of my house!"

She couldn't vent her frustration on the Madison family, so she poured it all onto Emory.

Inside, though, she was burning with resentment. How did her daughter end up marrying such a loud-mouthed hillbilly?

"Mom, stop yelling at Emory. He meant well." Cora spoke up, going against her mother.

"Well? Ha! I think he's up to no good," Helen scoffed. "And you, Cora, what the hell did Emory feed you to get you on his side like this? Why can't you be more like Scarlet? Even she knows better than to marry some backwoods nobody. But you…"

She trailed off when she noticed her daughter's eyes were red.

"Mom, what's wrong with Emory being from the mountains?" Cora asked, voice trembling. "Why do you always have to look down on the poor and worship the rich? I'm not some golden girl—you think I could've married someone amazing? I never hoped for some perfect man. Emory is good. He never once looked down on me for being disabled. Why can't you try being a little more accepting of him?"

She paused for a beat, then added firmly, "I don't regret marrying Emory. Not. One. Bit."

"You—!"

Helen raised her hand to slap her daughter, but several Madison family members quickly stepped in.

"That's enough, Helen," one of them said. "She married him—that's her business. Cora's fine with it, why are you losing your mind?"

"Exactly. A duck can never live the life of a swan—not every woman can be Scarlet."

"I get it, you wanted a rich son-in-law. But the real question is… did Cora ever have those qualifications?"

Their remarks, one after another, left Helen burning with shame. She wanted to vanish into the floor.

And just then—

Scarlet strolled over and added casually, "Aunt Helen, it's already hard enough for Cora to get married. You really shouldn't ask for more. I mean, these days, it's not easy for someone disabled to find a partner. Sure, Emory's always talking big, going on about his medical skills… but hey, at least he can shoot arrows, right?"

"And what the hell good is that?!" Helen snapped, shaking with rage. "Is archery going to put food on the table?"

"Why not?" Hilda sneered. "He can go shoot wild chickens and rabbits in the mountains, can't he?"

"You…" Helen couldn't take any more of their sarcasm. She turned to Cora, furious. "We're leaving. Let's go home."

"Aunt Helen, don't be in such a rush," Scarlet said, her face tilting into a smirk. "Didn't Emory say he'd heal Cora's legs? I want to see that happen…"

But before she could finish, her expression froze—her mouth slowly falling open in disbelief.

And she wasn't the only one.

In the hospital room, even Madeline and Hilda were staring, stunned.

"Cora… your legs…"

At that moment, the Iris Nightshade juices on Cora's legs had dried, and the dark patches—those deep, stubborn markings—were visibly fading.

"The blood spots… they're disappearing? Cora, could it be… could your legs really be healing?" Helen gasped, unable to contain her shock.

"No! No way!" Scarlet snapped, refusing to believe it. "He must've used the liquid to cover up the spots—some kind of chemical trick. Like invisible ink or something. There's no way her legs are really healing."

"She's right," Hilda echoed, her voice icy. "This is just Emory trying to fool us. There's no way he knows real medicine. Using herb juices to cure a disability? Ridiculous. Unless Cora stands up right now—"

"Exactly. Go on, Cora, stand up. Prove it." The rest of the Madison family chimed in, their tone full of skepticism.

Cora had been in a wheelchair for more than ten years. She had lived half her life unable to walk. How could her legs suddenly be healed?

"I…"

Feeling everyone's gaze lock onto her, Cora shrank back, because she was scared. Scared that if she tried to stand and failed, Emory would have to bear all their scorn again.

"Stop dawdling, Cora. If your legs are really healed, stand up and show us." Even Madeline had her eyes fixed on her.

Cora turned, lips pale and trembling. "Emory… can I?" she asked, hesitating.

It wasn't that she didn't trust him. It was just… healing a disability with herb juices? It felt too fantastical, like something out of a bedtime story.

"You can, Cora," Emory said softly. His voice was quiet, steady, and warm, like a hand on her back in the dark. "Your past may have been full of pain and shadows, but starting today, I'll make sure you know happiness. I'll make you the happiest woman in the world."

Cora nodded hard. Then, with a deep breath, and under the scrutiny of the entire Madison family, she began to rise.

Step.

Step... Step.

Her footsteps echoed softly through the hospital hallway, slow and unsteady.

As Helen watched her stumble forward, her eyes were filled with tears. Her voice broke as she cried out, "Thank heavens… thank heavens… Cora's not crippled anymore."

"What—"

"Her legs… they're really healed?"

"I'm not dreaming, am I?"

Scarlet and the others tried to suppress the tremor in their voices, but the disbelief hung thick in the air.

When Hilda saw Cora walking, the teacup in her hand slipped and shattered on the floor with a sharp crack. "E-Emory… was it really the herb juices that healed her?"

"What else would it be?" Emory replied calmly, his face unreadable.

Suddenly, Hilda's tone shifted. The bitterness was gone, replaced by something close to desperation. "Emory… do you have any more of that herb juice? Please, give me some. I don't want to spend the rest of my life in a wheelchair."

But Emory only offered her a cold shake of the head. "I'm sorry, Aunt Hilda. I don't have any more. I already gave you some, remember? But you threw it away. You didn't know how to cherish it."

"I… I…" Hilda looked down at the empty patch of floor where the water had spilled and vanished. Her whole body crumpled inward.

"Why… why is my fate so cruel? I don't want to be crippled forever! I don't! Why was I so stupid? Why didn't I believe him?"

Then, with sudden fury, she turned on Scarlet. "This is all your fault! You were the one who slandered him—this is your fault! I should never have listened to you!"

"Mom, calm down!" the short-haired woman beside her tugged at her sleeve, red-eyed.

"Yeah, Aunt Hilda, don't lose it," Scarlet said, trying to steady her. "You don't seriously think that herb juice healed her, do you?"

"What do you mean by that, Scarlet?" Hilda snapped, furious. "I saw Cora stand up with my own eyes. Are you saying that was fake?"

Scarlet scoffed and pulled out her phone. "You all seem to be forgetting something. Cora visited Dr. Ian earlier today. Look—he just texted me."

She held out her phone for everyone to see.

"What…?"

Now even Hilda wavered. She stared at the screen, her expression uncertain.

"Think about it, Aunt Hilda," Scarlet said. "If Emory really had some magical skill, would he have willingly married a disabled woman like Cora? Yesterday, before she went to see Dr. Ian, he couldn't heal her. But today, right after her appointment with Dr. Ian, she can suddenly walk again? That doesn't seem like a coincidence to you?"

A shadow passed through Hilda's face. "You mean… it was Dr. Ian who cured her?"

"Isn't it obvious?" Scarlet's voice dripped with smug satisfaction.

But Cora's eyes flared with anger. "Scarlet, don't twist things! Emory healed me! Just because you don't understand how, doesn't mean it's not real. What if the herb juice is his secret remedy?"

"Sure, sure," Scarlet said with a shrug, clearly unconvinced. "Whatever you say. He's your husband. Whether he's a genius or a fraud, that's your problem. But if he's really that good, why doesn't he heal Aunt Hilda too?"

"Exactly!" Hilda jumped at the suggestion. "Emory, help me—heal my legs and prove it!"

But Emory didn't move. He stood there silently, neither agreeing nor refusing.

"See?" Scarlet's tone sharpened. "He's not doing it because he can't. He's afraid to try and fail."

Just then, Madeline's phone rang.

"What? Master Quentin, are you… are you serious? Alright. I understand."When Madeline hung up the phone, every pair of eyes in the room turned toward her."Mom, what did Master Quentin call about?"She drew a long breath, steadying the emotion in her voice. "Do you remember how the Caison family from Nambern was planning to invest in an international music academy in Vermillion Delta?"Everyone nodded."Well, Master Quentin just informed me—the representative from the Caison family is Robert Caison."At the mention of that name, her tone shifted, carrying a weight of reverence."What? Robert? The legendary Aetherlord?""He's one of the most powerful people in Sacholles, and he is coming to Vermillion Delta?""I heard Robert suffered a serious injury years ago. They said he wouldn't live past sixty. Maybe he's here to return to his roots. His mother was from Vermillion Delta, after all."As hushed murmurs filled the room, Madeline's voice cut through them like a blade. "Silenc

In the tranquil courtyard of Crystal Baycourt, an old man wrapped in a white mink coat sat playing chess with a young girl in a teal-blue tunic. She looked about eighteen or nineteen, ponytail tied high. She looked lively and mischievous."Grandpa, you've lost again," Cassidy Caison said, placing a white piece on the board. She stuck out her tongue playfully. "You're so bad at this—can't even win a single game against me.""Maybe it's because I'm getting old," Robert replied, eyes drifting to the black piece in his hand, gaze lost in memories long gone."You're only fifty-nine," she retorted. "That's not old at all."Just as her voice faded, the sound of approaching footsteps echoed from the courtyard behind them. A servant's voice followed, "Ms. Cassidy, Scarlet Madison of the Madison family has come to visit.""Hm?"Cassidy looked up at the woman walking toward them. She was elegant, with a sultry charm that turned heads. Cassidy's face remained neutral."What do you want, Ms.

"Grandpa…" Cassidy choked out a sob the moment she saw Robert open one eye. "You're finally awake. I thought—I thought I'd never see you again…"But Emory shook his head slowly."He's not awake," he said quietly. "This is just the final flare of light before the flame goes out.""The final flare?" Cassidy's voice trembled. "Can he still be saved?""He can," Emory replied, nodding with calm certainty."Then I'm counting on you, Doctor."Something in the way he said it—steady, unrushed—allowed a fragile hope to stir in Cassidy's chest.Time passed. One minute. Then another. Ten minutes slipped by.Neither Cassidy nor Lucy dared make a sound. The two women stood still, barely breathing, as they watched Emory draw symbols over the area of Robert's internal organs. Then—"Huuh…" Emory exhaled deeply and withdrew his hand.At that very moment, a blinding white light flashed briefly from all seven of Robert's orifices. A second later, thick, black blood began to ooze from beneath h

After parting ways with Lucy, Emory made his way to Lunar Ventures.Located in the heart of Goldspire City, Lunar Ventures occupied hundreds of acres and boasted a seventy-story office tower, a landmark in the city skyline.Standing outside the towering building was a middle-aged man in a crisp white suit, a Rolex glinting on his wrist. He waited with practiced politeness, posture straight, eyes scanning the entrance. As soon as he spotted Emory approaching, he stepped forward eagerly. "Mr. Emory Belen?""That's me," Emory replied with a nod."Please, come in. Master Robert has instructed us—starting today, you're the new Chairman of Lunar Ventures." The man's voice was respectful, almost reverent. He introduced himself as Bobby Cowell, then led Emory straight to the chairman's office and handed him a thick folder. "Mr. Emory, this contains information on all our current assets and projects under Lunar Ventures."He produced a business card next. "And from now on, I'll be your pe

After Lillian was dragged out, the lobby finally quieted.Bobby turned to Emory, then, without a word, slapped himself hard across the face—twice. He forced a smile. "Sir, I'm truly sorry. This was my mistake. I trusted the wrong person and caused you unnecessary trouble."Emory shook his head. "Let it go. It's not your fault."He turned, about to leave Lunar Ventures, when a white-haired man in a brown suit hurried in from outside. As soon as he caught sight of Bobby, his expression shifted into one of desperation."Bobby, I need your help," he said, practically pleading. "Halstone Grand Hotel is having a little cash flow issue. Could you loan me 30 million? I promise I'll pay it back—soon. I just need a little time—""Ahem." Bobby cut him off, his tone cool. "Robin, I'm not in charge of things at Lunar Ventures anymore. If you're looking for a loan, you'll have to speak with our new chairman.""Chairman Emory?" Robin Vito blinked, glancing at Emory."That's right," Bobby confir

"I'm so jealous of Alice. She's actually getting married at the Halstone Grand Hotel.""If that were me, I'd be over the moon.""Right? What woman wouldn't want to get married there? Oh, hey—Cora, when are you and Emory planning your wedding?"The question cut through the hum of chatter as several heads turned toward Cora."Me?" She hesitated for a second, then offered a polite smile. "I'll need to discuss it with my mom first.""Any idea where you'll hold it?"Before Cora could respond, Scarlet scoffed from across the table. "Where else could it be? Probably one of Goldspire City's cheapest motels. Let's be honest—Cora's family doesn't have any connections, and they're certainly not rolling in money. And Emory? He's a nobody from the mountains. What more can you expect? The Halstone Grand Hotel? Please. She's lucky if they even let her through the front door.""I don't need to get married at Halstone!" Cora said, lifting her chin. "A small motel is fine. As long as Emory shows u

"Cora, move aside." Helen's voice cut through the room, sharp and filled with disappointment as she glared at her daughter."I'm not moving!" Cora's eyes were red. "I want to be with Emory.""You—are you trying to drive me to an early grave?" Helen, furious, spun around and slammed the door to her bedroom.Watching the door rattle in the frame, Cora gave Emory a tired, bitter smile. "Honey, don't take what my mom said to heart.""It's fine," Emory said, shaking his head. "I've gotten used to it these past few days."He hesitated a moment, then added, "Cora, how about I go with you to the Caison residence tomorrow? I might be able to help with that international music academy partnership."He had saved Robert's life—he figured Cassidy would give him that much courtesy."No need, sweetheart. You just started your new job today. You'll be swamped tomorrow and the next. I can handle going to Crystal Baycourt by myself. Don't worry—your wife is a tough cookie," she said with a wink, g

"What? Cassidy is expecting Cora? That's impossible."Scarlet stared at the security guard in stunned disbelief. Her voice trembled with confusion, eyes wide as the words sank in.Cassidy? Of all people? She couldn't process it. The Caison family stood at the very top of the social ladder—untouchable, unimaginable. And Cora? She was nothing. Just an ordinary woman, barely scraping by. By all logic, the two should never have crossed paths. But right before her eyes, Cora was being ushered in like an honored guest, vanishing into the distance.Something snapped in Scarlet's mind. She blinked, then darted forward, calling out, "Wait!"A guard stepped in to block her path. "I'm sorry, miss. Crystal Baycourt isn't accepting guests today.""I'm her cousin!" Scarlet blurted, pointing at Cora's back. "We came together! Cora! Wait!"Cora stopped. She turned slightly, eyes flicking toward Scarlet. The guard hesitated, then stepped aside.Inside the grand courtyard, Scarlet caught up to

After the dinner at Madison estate, Cora left with Emory. After they were gone, Alice strolled over to Scarlet with a smile. "Scarlet, aren't you going to help Cora find Linda's granddaughter?"Earlier during dinner, Cora had explained the complications holding up construction in Everdeen Village. Without locating Linda's granddaughter, the international music academy project couldn't move forward."Me? Why would I help Cora?" Scarlet's lips curled in a cold smirk. "It's not like the Caison family's working with me. Besides, I'm honestly curious—how long do you think they'll tolerate Cora's delays? I wouldn't be surprised if the Caison family loses their patience.""You mean, you don't think she'll find Linda's granddaughter?" Alice asked, catching the implication."Hmph. It's not easy to find a girl who's been missing for ten years." Scarlet shook her head, voice heavy with disdain. "Does Cora really think she can keep pulling off miracles?""You've got a point." Alice nodded. "L

Emory calmly set down his fork."You'll handle him?" Ellen let out a sharp, mocking laugh. "You think you're some kind of mystic warrior?"Scarlet shot Emory a look of pure disdain. She didn't bother speaking—clearly, she thought engaging would be beneath her."No," Emory admitted, shaking his head as the eyes around the table settled on him. "I'm not a mystic warrior. But I—""I knew you weren't!" Ellen cut him off before he could finish. "You're just some country bumpkin from the mountains. What do you know about mystic arts? Do you have any idea how expensive the training is? You couldn't even afford a proper betrothal gift for Cora—how on earth would you pay for lessons?"She straightened up, her voice rising with self-righteous superiority. "And let me remind you—Derrick's backed by Jason Eli, the most dangerous man in Goldspire's underworld. Jason recently reached the level just below Master Quentin himself. Do you think you can afford to offend him? Even our family has to tr

"Honey, you know her?" Cora asked, unable to hide her curiosity as she noticed Emory staring at the girl in the photo frame."No," Emory said, shaking his head. She sighed. "Alright then…"She hesitated, then continued, "Her granddaughter's been missing for ten years. Trying to find her now... it's close to impossible.""We won't know unless we try." Emory offered a faint smile. "Unless, of course, you're planning to bulldoze Linda's house for your international music academy?""I don't want to do that," Cora said, her voice soft but firm. "She's been through enough.""Then let me handle it," Emory said, lifting the frame. "If we're lucky, we'll have something by tomorrow."He turned and walked away, photo in hand.Watching his back, Cora spoke under her breath, "Mom, do you think he can really find her?""Find her? My foot!" Helen didn't bother hiding her contempt. "Ten years missing. Who knows if she's even still in Vermillion Delta? Where's he supposed to start—thin air? Mig

Linda spoke with a bitter edge to her voice, a mix of sorrow and self-mockery bleeding through every word."It's really nothing, Linda," Cora said softly, offering a gentle smile that felt like a breeze in spring. "Helping you… helps me too."Emory, standing nearby, watched his wife chatting with the old woman and frowned. "Cora, what's going on? What do you mean, helping yourself? And who was that woman earlier?""That was Denise," Cora replied. "She was adopted by Linda, but she's never supported her—not even once. All she does is wish for Linda to die so she can take her house and money. A complete ingrate."Her anger rose as she continued. "If Denise really managed to snatch the house, she'd definitely use it to blackmail the Madison family for a cut of the relocation compensation from Everdeen Village. That's why I stepped in, and… things got heated.""I see," Emory said quietly, watching his wife stand up for the old woman. "What about Linda's other family? No one else around

When Emory arrived at Everdeen Village, the first thing he saw was Helen arguing heatedly with a flashy young woman dressed to the nines. Nearby, Cora sat on the ground, wiping tears from her eyes."Cora, Helen, what happened?" Emory walked up, his voice calm but concerned. Before Cora could answer, Helen snapped, pointing a trembling finger at the woman. "What gives you the right to hit my daughter?"The young woman didn't flinch. She crossed her arms and sneered. "So what if I hit her? She stuck her nose where it didn't belong.""You—!"Helen looked ready to lash out, but Cora gently tugged at Helen's arm and shook her head. "Let it go, Mom. Let her leave.""You still not gone?" Helen barked, turning back to the woman. The woman glared at Cora as she turned to leave. "Let me tell you something, Cora. Linda's house, her money—it's all mine now. I don't respect elders. So what? What can you do about it? You wanna play hero again next time?" she sneered. "I'll beat you to death."

"A ninth-rank mystic warrior, huh?"Emory gave a wry smile, then turned to Bobby. "All right. I'll meet him."Soon enough, Emory was in Lunar Ventures's reception room, face to face with Jason. Jason wore a black jacket, and his body—solid with bronzed muscle—looked built for war."You're the new chairman of Lunar Ventures, Emory Belen?" Jason's hawk-like eyes bored into him."I am," Emory replied calmly. "What do you want?""I want your company to find someone for me," Jason said, all confidence. "Do the job, and I'll pay you seven million."He slid a photograph across the table. It showed a girl, no older than sixteen or seventeen."Not interested," Emory said without glancing at the picture.Jason's smile didn't falter, but his voice darkened. "You might want to reconsider, Emory. I have a feeling we'll be working together a lot in Goldspire in the future."As he spoke, an invisible force surged from Jason, exploding the table and chairs in front of him into splinters.Bobb

When the meeting finally wrapped up, Cora sought out Scarlet in private."What do you want?" Scarlet arched a brow, glancing at her with a smirk that carried more arrogance than curiosity."Scarlet, do you know why Linda refuses to move?" Cora asked, genuinely curious. The compensation their family had offered was generous—by any measure, Linda shouldn't still be clinging to that dilapidated house in Everdeen Village."Of course I know why." Scarlet's smile deepened with mischief. "But why would I tell you?"Cora was at a loss for words."Cora, the Caisons handed you the international music academy project. That means it's your responsibility. Don't come running to me every time you hit a wall. Why should I help you? Why don't you ask Emory for his help?" Her voice dripped with mockery. "Didn't you say Emory knows the Caisons? If he's so capable, shouldn't a mere holdout be an easy fix for him?""Scarlet, you and I both know Emory doesn't actually know anyone from the Caison fami

Cora kept her tone calm, her voice soft and patient as she tried to reason with the old woman. But the moment she finished speaking, a frail elderly woman with white hair and rope sandals came storming out, a broom in her hand."Enough of your noise," the woman snapped. "I told you I'm not moving! You're a pretty girl, but can't you understand plain words? Get lost!"With that, she started swinging the broom at Cora, chasing her out.Cora had no choice. She backed away and left the worn-down village house. She had just stepped outside when she came face to face with Scarlet."Well, well," Scarlet said, arms crossed, a sly smirk tugging at her lips. "Looks like things aren't going too smoothly, huh?""What are you doing here?" Cora's tone went cold. "Planning to meddle in the academy's construction now? Or did you forget what the Caison family said?""Relax," Scarlet replied, feigning innocence. "I'm just here to check in on the old lady. No need to be so tense."She turned and

He turned without another word and walked off, the laughter drained from his face.Moments after he disappeared, Bobby emerged from the office lobby of Lunar Ventures. He spotted Emory and hesitated a beat before stepping forward."Mr. Emory," he said cautiously, "you know that man?"Emory nodded. "He's married to my wife's cousin.""Oh… So Tyler is related to you?" Bobby's expression stiffened, but he quickly forced a smile. "In that case, since he's family, I'll let it slide. The seven thousand he swindled from us—no need to make a fuss.""Swindle
