At the peak of the Vale of Cameron, Emory Belen came down from the mountain for his wedding—only for his cold, distant fiancée to humiliate him in front of everyone by ripping up their engagement contract. Bound by his master's instructions, Emory had no choice but to marry her older cousin instead: Cora Madison. Cora always assumed Emory was just some penniless hillbilly, with no car, no house, nothing to his name… Until the day she found out the truth.

Chapter 1

"Hey beautiful, how old are you?"

"Thirty-two."

"You okay with someone smaller?"

"Depends. What are you referring to?"

"Age, obviously. Unless you meant—? Anyway, no offense, but you look pale. Your lips have a purple tinge, your forehead's shadowed… like you've got gynecological issues. Lucky for you, I specialize in that field—"

At the foot of the Vale of Cameron, Emory Belen was mid-conversation with the local village belle's sister-in-law when—

THWACK!

A sharp pain exploded across his skull as a white-haired old man smacked the back of his head. "You little brat! I sent you down the mountain to get married, not to harass women!"

"Master Wilson, I don't want to leave the Vale. I'd rather stay and take care of you."

Tears welled in Emory's eyes.

He'd been an orphan, adopted twenty-five years ago by Wilson Belen—the man who'd even given him his name. In those years, Emory had mastered the Phantom Arts of Medicine, the legacy of their lineage, and surpassed his master by unlocking the forbidden Reaper's Codex. The world knew him as The Reaper.

"Take care of me? Don't spout nonsense, boy! I'm in my prime! Besides, your Solar Vein Curse is flaring up. The only way for you to survive is by marrying a Madison woman!" Wilson scoffed. "And isn't Scarlet Madison your childhood sweetheart? Marrying her would fulfill your teenage dream, wouldn't it?"

Emory's cheeks flushed. Memories surfaced—Scarlet, a bright-eyed girl who'd once stayed at the Vale, sharing stories of city life, napping against his shoulder. On her last day, she'd vowed, "When I grow up, I'll marry you."

With a resigned sigh, Emory relented. "Fine, Master. Once the curse is broken, I'll return."

"Take this." Wilson tossed him a black pouch. "Red truffles from the Vale. One extends life by half a month. And remember—marry a Madison!"

The day Emory left, the elite of the nine realms received a seismic alert: The Reaper had descended upon the world.

"The Reaper's emerged?!" A tycoon roared, "Ready a 100-million-dollar dowry! My daughter will wed him! With him, we'd rule the world!"

"Princess Mia," a royal advisor urged, "the king commands you to find The Reaper and marry him—"

"Saintess," a sect elder pleaded, "only by allying with The Reaper can our ancient order rise again!"

Goldspire City, Vermillion Delta

Three days later, Emory arrived at the Madison estate, clutching a wrinkled betrothal contract and the black pouch.

"Grandma, I refuse!"

A cold-eyed woman in a white dress, her jet-black ponytail swaying, looked down her nose at him. "I, Scarlet Madison, was the campus queen from middle school through college. By graduation, I'd founded Scarlet Media. I'm worth millions! I'm the Golden Heiress of the Delta! And you expect me to marry some backwater nobody? No. Damn. Way."

Emory stared, barely recognizing the girl he'd once known. "Scarlet… you promised, back at the Vale—"

"God, Emory, grow up!" She laughed derisively. "Kids say stupid things! I'm a CEO; you're a farmer. One of my handbags costs more than you'll earn in ten lifetimes. And you think some childhood pinky swear entitles you to me? You're delusional!"

"It's not just a promise." Emory produced the contract, its ink declaring:

Emory Belen & Scarlet Madison—bound in matrimony.

"What?! Grandma, why does he have this?!" Scarlet whirled toward the elderly matriarch.

"Your grandpa owed Master Wilson a life debt," Madeline Madison explained calmly. "On his deathbed, he arranged this."

"Grandpa had no right to play matchmaker like that!" Scarlet stomped her foot in frustration.

After a moment of quiet, she snatched the contract and flung it into the trash. "Even if this relic's real, who honors betrothal contracts anymore? Newsflash, Emory—I'm not marrying you! A pheasant doesn't belong with a phoenix!"

"Scarlet, that's enough."

A soft voice cut through the tension. A wheelchair-bound woman with short hair retrieved the contract. "Everyone's equal. You owe your luxury to the labor of people like him."

She handed it back to Emory. "Ignore my cousin. Leaving the mountains took courage. I admire that."

Emory blinked. For a moment, he couldn't speak.

She was stunning—more so than Scarlet. Her pearl-white dress, her poised grace, the quiet dignity in her eyes… She was unlike anyone he'd ever met.

"Oh please, Cora!" Scarlet sneered. "You're a cripple who only survives because of my connection to Dr. Ian Donovan! Know your place—or I'll have him cut off your meds!"

A smirk twisted her lips. "Actually… since you're so fond of Emory, why don't you marry him? A wheelchair-bound burden and a hillbilly—perfect match! No man in Goldspire would want you anyway."

She meant it as a jab. But to everyone's shock, Cora nodded. "Fine. I will."

She met Emory's eyes. "The Madisons owe your master a debt. If Scarlet won't repay it, I will.

"Emory Belen… will you marry me?"

Chapter 2
"I…"Emory Belen hesitated as he faced the wheelchair-bound woman before him—Cora Madison, whose beauty and grace outshone even Scarlet's. For a moment, he nearly refused. Then he remembered Wilson's words: "You must marry a Madison woman."Steeling himself, Emory asked, "You're a Madison?""Yes. Cora Madison. Pleasure to meet you." She smiled, sweet as spring water, fragrant as wildflowers. The warmth in her gaze left Emory momentarily spellbound."Then I'll marry you," he declared."Perfect!" Scarlet clapped her hands, her voice dripping with triumph. "Let's get you two to the city hall before this backwater nobody changes his mind!"Without waiting for objections, she ushered Emory and Cora out of the Madison estate. After they left, one of the Madison family members turned to Madeline, who was seated at the head, and said, "Mom, are you seriously letting Cora marry that man? Even if she's disabled, she's still a Madison. We could've used her for a political alliance—like wit

"Master Quentin, is something wrong?" Madeline couldn't help but ask. Quentin had been standing silently, not taking his seat. "Is it the food? Perhaps the dishes today don't suit your taste? If that's the case, I can have all this Sacholles cuisine taken away," she said."This... this is really precious... and you just threw it into the trash?"Quentin didn't seem to hear her. His gaze was locked on the half piece of red truffle lying in the garbage can.He stared at it—As if his heart was bleeding."Precious?" Madeline looked puzzled. "Master Quentin, I'm not sure what you're referring to...?"Everyone in the Madison family turned toward him, confused."This red truffle."Quentin's hand trembled as he picked the red truffle out of the garbage. He rinsed it gently under clear water, then—Right in front of everyone, he popped it into his mouth and swallowed it whole."What?!"The entire Madison family froze in shock.Scarlet's face turned crimson in an instant. The tr

"Fine. As long as Cora's leg can be cured, I'll let her represent the Madison family in the negotiations with the Caison family."Madeline looked down at Emory from her high-backed chair, her gaze sharp and commanding."Alright then. I'll heal her leg right now."Emory didn't understand why his wife was so set on being the Madison family's representative in those talks, but they were husband and wife. He would help her fulfill this wish."You're going to heal Cora's leg?" Madeline blinked, stunned by Emory's confidence.Even Cora herself turned to him in disbelief. Before Emory could make a move, Scarlet folded her arms across her chest and let out a cold, mocking laugh."Emory, are you serious? Talking nonsense in broad daylight. What do you know about medicine? Even Dr. Ian, the top doctor in Goldspire, couldn't heal Cora's leg—and you think you can?""I studied medicine in the Vale of Cameron from a young age, I—""Enough, Emory!" Scarlet cut him off sharply. "Don't talk to

Chapter 5
"Emory, shut up!" Helen's fury flared the moment she saw Emory offering unsolicited advice to Dr. Ian. "You don't know the first thing about medicine, so stop spouting nonsense. Dr. Ian is the top doctor in Goldspire. What makes you think you're qualified to show off your so-called skills in front of him? Just because you've read a few books on folk remedies?""Mom, Emory was only trying to—""Be quiet." Helen shot her daughter a sharp glare. "Do you have any idea what kind of damage reckless words can cause in a clinic? People can die because of them."Emory didn't argue. He only murmured to himself, as if he hadn't heard her at all. "When cold toxins enter the body, symptoms often include appetite loss and vivid dreams. Especially around midnight, a stabbing pain three inches below the navel, accompanied by—""That's enough." Before he could finish, Michelle's cold voice cut through the air. "I don't need you repeating my father's condition back to me. If you're really a doctor, t

"Emory, Scarlet is being generous enough to let you compete with a professional archer. Aren't you going to pick a bow?" Lillian Eldrich, tall and sharp-tongued, couldn't help prodding him when she saw Emory still rooted to the spot."But why should I compete with him?" Emory glanced coolly at Sylas. "Beating him would be a waste of time. It means nothing to me.""You? Beat Sylas? Are you dreaming? He was in the top four at the national championships!"Lillian sneered."Emory, you just said competing with me was meaningless. What—are you looking to make it more interesting?" Sylas narrowed his eyes at him."That's exactly what I meant." Emory held up three fingers. "If you lose, pay me this amount.""Three million?" Sylas's brow twitched. He might've been born into money, but even his monthly allowance was only 700,000 dollars.Three million... that would be his monthly allowance from the last four and a half months."Emory, have you never seen money before? You just open your mo

Goldspire City, Hudds Ventures."Dad, something's happened to the Blackwell Enterprises." Lucy stood in front of Hudds, her expression complicated."What happened?" Darian's question came instinctively."It's… Michelle. Her father—he passed away. Suddenly."As Lucy spoke, she couldn't help but recall what Emory had once said at Dr. Ian's clinic."What? Clark's dead?" Darian was stunned, unable to process it right away."The autopsy report says it was due to cold exposure…" Her voice trailed off, hesitant."Cold exposure?" Darian fell into silence.Because he remembered—Back at the clinic, Dr. Ian had clearly treated Clark Blackwell's condition. If that were true, how could he die from something as mundane as cold?"Dad, do you think… maybe we really did meet a miracle doctor?"After a brief pause, Lucy's voice grew steadier, tinged with awe. "Maybe it wasn't just cold. Maybe… it was some kind of cold poison invading your system.""…Hmm." Darian considered her words, his

Watching the Iris Nightshade juices seep into the ground, Emory just shook his head and sighed, saying nothing. It was Cora, sitting in her wheelchair, who spoke up for him. "Aunt Hilda, even if you don't believe Emory, you didn't have to smash the glass like that…""That's enough, Cora. Shut your mouth," Hilda cut her off coldly. "Look at you—you're crippled yourself, and you're still defending this con man?"She turned her glare toward Helen next. "Helen! Can't you keep your son-in-law in check? Why are you letting him cause a scene in the hospital?""Emory!" Helen exploded, her voice sharp and angry. "If you say one more word, get out of my house!"She couldn't vent her frustration on the Madison family, so she poured it all onto Emory.Inside, though, she was burning with resentment. How did her daughter end up marrying such a loud-mouthed hillbilly?"Mom, stop yelling at Emory. He meant well." Cora spoke up, going against her mother."Well? Ha! I think he's up to no good,"

"What? Master Quentin, are you… are you serious? Alright. I understand."When Madeline hung up the phone, every pair of eyes in the room turned toward her."Mom, what did Master Quentin call about?"She drew a long breath, steadying the emotion in her voice. "Do you remember how the Caison family from Nambern was planning to invest in an international music academy in Vermillion Delta?"Everyone nodded."Well, Master Quentin just informed me—the representative from the Caison family is Robert Caison."At the mention of that name, her tone shifted, carrying a weight of reverence."What? Robert? The legendary Aetherlord?""He's one of the most powerful people in Sacholles, and he is coming to Vermillion Delta?""I heard Robert suffered a serious injury years ago. They said he wouldn't live past sixty. Maybe he's here to return to his roots. His mother was from Vermillion Delta, after all."As hushed murmurs filled the room, Madeline's voice cut through them like a blade. "Silenc

Chapter 10
In the tranquil courtyard of Crystal Baycourt, an old man wrapped in a white mink coat sat playing chess with a young girl in a teal-blue tunic. She looked about eighteen or nineteen, ponytail tied high. She looked lively and mischievous."Grandpa, you've lost again," Cassidy Caison said, placing a white piece on the board. She stuck out her tongue playfully. "You're so bad at this—can't even win a single game against me.""Maybe it's because I'm getting old," Robert replied, eyes drifting to the black piece in his hand, gaze lost in memories long gone."You're only fifty-nine," she retorted. "That's not old at all."Just as her voice faded, the sound of approaching footsteps echoed from the courtyard behind them. A servant's voice followed, "Ms. Cassidy, Scarlet Madison of the Madison family has come to visit.""Hm?"Cassidy looked up at the woman walking toward them. She was elegant, with a sultry charm that turned heads. Cassidy's face remained neutral."What do you want, Ms.
